On December 8, 1891, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital opened its doors to provide the first inpatient services for those needing care in the region. Since then, the doors have never closed. While many things have changed, one thing remains the same today: Cottage continues to be a vital part of the Santa Barbara community, providing state-of-the-art compassionate care to people of all ages and all walks of life.

During our 125th anniversary year, we honor all who have contributed to our progress in 2016 and throughout the years. Today we look back with admiration and gratitude to the women who founded the hospital and together with their neighbors raised the funds needed to create the hospital. We also take this opportunity to celebrate the succeeding generations of physicians, nurses, caregivers, volunteers, and partners whose contributions of time, talent and expertise have helped grow and sustain the excellence of our community’s health system. You are all part of this legacy.

In 2016 Cottage Health marked important clinical, quality, community, and philanthropic milestones.

Cottage Health launched a new electronic health record system that improves care documentation and enhances safety and communication. It includes MyChart, a secure tool that enables patients to see their test results.

Dear community member,

As we look back on 2016, we are particularly grateful to be a part of this generous community we call home.

In a hospital, there’s no such thing as a routine day. There is, however, a routine meeting that helps to ensure safety at Cottage Health. It’s called a daily safety huddle. Our hospital teams gather at the same time every morning to plan for the unexpected, to discuss potential areas of elevated safety concern and address them in the moment. This quick transfer of information, a sharing of known or potential safety-critical issues, can involve anything from slippery floors on a rainy day, ensuring staff awareness of two patients with the same name, identifying special family needs or sharing protocols for a unique treatment. The meetings take just minutes, but they promote effective teamwork and immediate problem solving to ensure everyone is focused on Cottage’s culture of safety.

Our health system’s commitment to quality has resulted in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid overall 5-star rating at Santa Barbara and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospitals for five consecutive quarters – placing the hospitals among the top two percent in the nation for patient experience, quality, and safety. Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital received high honors as well, with a 2016 Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for its sustained patient experience scores.

Last year Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital marked the opening of the new Breast Imaging Center, along with the new Goleta Medical Building – now home to many physician offices and clinics, including the Grotenhuis Pediatric Clinics. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital celebrated the opening of the new SAGE Medical Library – a resource for the continuing education of our caregiving teams, and open to community members who have interest in health care issues.

Cottage Health’s Population Health Department completed a comprehensive regional health needs assessment. Combined with a series of listening tours throughout the community, this data has helped identify needs and opportunities for new programs and partnerships to improve the health of underserved populations. Both the needs assessment and the 2016-2019 Community Benefit Implementation Strategy are posted on the Cottage Health website.

Life-changing clinical advances continue as the Cottage Heart and Vascular Center added the WATCHMAN procedure for minimally invasive treatment of atrial fibrillation, and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital opened the region’s only intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) suite for complex neurosurgery. Cottage Children’s Medical Center launched the Cottage

Concussion Clinic, the first specialty clinic of its kind in the tri-county region, to provide outreach and care to young athletes at risk for concussion.

These and many other vital programs were made possible, in part, through generous philanthropic support. Among the many hundreds of meaningful contributions received in 2016, an extraordinary gift commitment from Mary and Richard Compton deserves special acknowledgment. When fully funded, their gift will create a $15 million endowment that will accelerate medical innovation and support patient care excellence at Cottage. To recognize and celebrate their visionary generosity, we look forward to dedicating the Compton Pavilion when the rebuilding of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is completed in 2018.

We are aware that nationwide, conversations about health care reform continue to generate debate, passion, and uncertainty. Thanks to sustained community leadership and support, we are confident Cottage Health will continue to thrive and be able to meet and exceed the needs of our patients and families. On behalf of everyone at Cottage Health, we thank you for your partnership and trust. It is an honor and privilege to serve this community.

Ron Werft President & CEO, Cottage Health

About 10 years ago, doctors found Corby had a lemon-sized brain tumor and treated her with surgery and radiation. Then, five years later, doctors found she had another brain tumor—this one was identified as difficult to treat, so they recommended a new procedure using the intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging system known as an iMRI.

“The iMRI enables the Cottage Health neuroscience team to do the surgery and immediately look at the results in the same suite,” Corby said. “So they get every bit of that tumor. I was out of the hospital in two days.”

The Santa Barbara Neuroscience Institute at Cottage Health is one of only a handful of hospitals in the nation that offers this level of specialized medical care.

The advanced imaging system provides neurosurgeons with the clearest images during brain surgery, helping them remove brain tumors that were previously considered inoperable.

The iMRI technology at the Santa Barbara Neuroscience Institute is providing patients with new paths. With precise targeting of the tumor, patients can benefit from healthier outcomes with a reduced likelihood of additional procedures.

Corby is an inspiring testimony for finding those new paths. “I have a good life,” Corby said. “Cottage Health put me back on the trail.”

Carissa’s family tradition with Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital began over 90 years ago, long before she was born. That was when her great-grandmother, Vernice Jordan McKellar, started her nursing career at SBCH in 1923, after graduating from the Knapp School of Nursing. But Vernice actually started more than she could have known at the time.

Decades later, Vernice’s granddaughter (and Carissa’s mother), Shawn Hodges, joined SBCH as a nurse in 1981. A few years later, Carissa was born at SBCH. Then in 2009, Carissa graduated nursing school, was pinned by her mother with her great-grandmother’s Knapp pin and also began her career as a nurse at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, creating a legacy of three generations of nursing care.

“I think my great-grandmother and my mom being nurses here has something to do with my going into the nursing field,” Carissa said.

Following in another family tradition, Carissa gave birth to both of her children at SBCH over recent years.

“Now I’m a pediatric nurse, and I love it,” she said. “Kids are so resilient. It’s amazing what you see day to day. It’s a great job.”

Celebrating a visionary philanthropic commitment from Mary and Richard Compton, the third new patient care pavilion at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is scheduled for occupancy in the fall of 2018.

The Compton Pavilion will become home to the hospital’s broad range of inpatient services for children, including pediatric acute care and pediatric intensive care units. A new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) will be located adjacent to the Cottage Birth Center and Mother-Infant Unit. The Compton Pavilion will also house medical/surgical beds for adult patients, including the hospital’s state-of-the-art cardiac telemetry unit.

The new $15 million transformational gift from Mary and Richard Compton will create an endowment to promote innovation and patient-care excellence at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, benefiting patients and improving the health of the people of Santa Barbara for generations to come.

Inspired by the potential for new medical breakthroughs and to encourage innovations in medical technology, supporters Alex Pananides and Jan Dunbar have made new philanthropic commitments to bring Cottage physicians and University of California, Santa Barbara scientists together to advance medical knowledge through research.

Philanthropic giving catalyzes innovation and discovery

“Cottage and UCSB each embody a commitment to excellence,” says Pananides. “Jan and I wanted to structure our giving in a way that connects the strengths of physicians who have hands-on patient care experience in the hospital setting with top-level researchers in engineering, the biological sciences, and other centers of excellence at UCSB.”

These forward-thinking donors also funded research symposia in 2016 and 2017 – attracting more than 100 participants each year.

“The symposia look a little like speed dating,” says Cottage’s VP of Research, Dr. Richard Beswick. Participants from Cottage and UCSB present short overviews of their clinical and research interests to other attendees in rapid succession. Topics range from oncology to macular degeneration and from diabetes to spinal cord injuries. The key outcome, says Beswick, is the identification of common interests and potential partners for current and future research. “Support from Jan and Alex has already fostered collaborations between our institutions in the areas of neuroscience, wound care, general surgery, and patient-physician communication. Their generous support will assure that Cottage can continue sponsoring these research gatherings for the next four years.”

To encourage the acceleration of promising lines of research from concept to action, Pananides and Dunbar have also provided funding to support seed grants for collaborative research involving Cottage clinicians, with UCSB scholars in areas with “translational” (pragmatic, bench-to-bedside) potential.

“We are so grateful to Alex and Jan for helping build our capacity to improve healthcare through research, innovation, and collaboration with UCSB,” adds Cottage Health President and CEO Ron Werft.

SAGE Medical Library opens

Could there be a more perfect name for a space devoted to studying and learning? In appreciation to SAGE Publishing and its founder Sara Miller McCune for their generous support, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation hosted more than 120 friends to celebrate the opening of the stunning new SAGE Medical Library at a special dedication ceremony in October.

Located near the hospital’s original Bath Street entrance, the SAGE Medical Library is the largest such facility on the Central Coast and the only one open to the public. It serves the entire Santa Barbara community including physicians, hospital staff, patients, medical residents, students, medical researchers and the public.

The design of the new library respects tradition and provides access to a broad range of electronic resources. Digital media capabilities enable users to perform research, and comfortable gathering spaces promote interaction and the sharing of ideas.

The Population Health team at Cottage Health recently completed analysis of the Community Health Needs Assessment of 2,500 households and listening tours with 230 community leaders. We thank all of the community members who invested time to participate and contribute information to these important efforts. The resulting 2016-19 community benefit implementation strategy outlines population health pilot programs and initiatives. Learn more on our website at cottagehealth.org/pophealth.

These top priorities were identified from data collected and presented to community partners for brainstorming potential initiatives and roles for collective impact on improving health:

• Access to Care – Considers cost, PCP, insurance• Behavioral Health – Focuses on depression and

mentally healthy days• Chronic Disease Management – Includes

diseases such as diabetes and obesity• Housing Insecurity• Food Insecurity

For 2017, targeted goals include:

• Ongoing data analysis – Which populations are most impacted by not having access to care? What role do chronic conditions play in health outcomes for vulnerable populations? What factors impact mental health?

• Cottage Data2Go & Population Health Learning Lab – Planning, implementation and evaluation toolkits, links to evidence-based programs, case studies from Santa Barbara County, an online portal to support collaboration between health nonprofits working toward shared outcomes.

• Population Health Workshop Series – New tools and initiatives that create momentum in the community around priority areas and population health strategies.

• Community benefit grants – Last year, CH contributed $1.7 million to 16 different local organizations providing care and education. The grants program will continue with a population health-focused, initiative-based strategy.

• Health Leads – Develop program for health advocates to connect patients with resources for continued care, support and social services outside the hospital.

• Implementation strategy – Work on pilot programs and initiatives outlined to address priority areas in our community.

Through the work of Population Health and community partners, Cottage Health can reach beyond hospital walls and into the community to help serve residents before a chronic condition leads to hospitalization. Improving community health is a long-term process, but it also offers long lasting, life-changing benefits with results that will cross generations.

New program helps care for caregivers

The numbers are staggering. Approximately 43.5 million caregivers in the U.S. have provided unpaid care to an adult or child over the past 12 months, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP. The value of services provided by unpaid caregivers has continually increased over the last decade and has a current economic value estimated at well over $400 billion a year.

While caregiving is extremely rewarding, it can also be very stressful. To help focus on the needs of family caregivers and help reduce hospital readmissions, Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation was awarded grant funding from Santa Barbara Foundation for its Coast Caregiver Resource Center (CCRC) to initiate a caregiver navigation pilot project.

This project identifies patients who are at high risk for unnecessary hospital readmission and refers their caregivers to a CCRC caregiver navigator who helps guide the caregiver with personalized care plans, education and resources to address their challenges.

With this individualized support, family caregivers of patients are better able to attend to their own health and well-being while providing more competent and confident care for their loved one.

Challenges are common among caregivers of all ages. Elderly caregivers may have injuries or chronic illnesses that are exacerbated by the demands of caregiving for another. Younger caregivers, e.g. adult children, may have to reduce or leave employment to manage the care of their family member. Without outside support, many caregivers ignore their own health and focus solely on the needs of the person for whom they are providing care.

Family caregivers are unsung heroes who make personal sacrifices to provide long-term care for those they love. The CCRC caregiver navigator project is designed to help create better lives for caregivers and in turn for the family members or friends they care for.

Now in its second year, the caregiver navigator project serves as a new model of successful hospital-to-home care in South Santa Barbara County.

“There are four kinds of people in the world:Those who have been caregivers; Those who currently are caregivers; Those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.”

Page 19: THE MAGAZINE OF COTTAGE HEALTH 2016 annual … MAGAZINE OF COTTAGE HEALTH SPRING 2017 Corby’s Story: iMRI technology opens new treatment options Moments Live On: Celebrating 125

In her lifetime, Alice Keck Park made regular donations to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, the first of which provided funds for a new surgery suite given in memory of her husband, Santa Barbara native David Edgar Park. Alice died in 1977 at the age of 59. She named three local not-for-profit organizations as the beneficiaries of her estate – one was Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. During the two-year period required to administer her estate – comprised of Superior Oil stock – the value of shares grew substantially, resulting in assets totalling $30 million as the initial funding of the SBCH Foundation.

Wishing to safeguard the funds from this generous gift and make them meaningful for future generations, the hospital’s Board of Directors established the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation in 1982. They established guidelines that allowed the hospital to spend no more than half of the interest earnings in any one year, and none of the principal. As a result, over the past 25 years the endowment has grown and its interest has helped to develop medical services and community programs well beyond the scope of a typical community hospital.

Through 125 years of service to this community, our hospital has been shaped by the generosity of the patients and families we care for every day. We celebrate Alice Keck Park and each of our generous donors for their spirit of giving to create positive change for others.

Jennifer Graham tried to remain calm as she sat next to her daughter, Stella, sleeping in a hospital bed at Cottage Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Her four-year-old child had just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and was admitted to stabilize her high blood sugar level. Stella was receiving the medical care she needed from nurses, doctors and other staff, but now another crisis was looming. Jennifer had missed many days of work to be at her daughter’s side during the emergency, and her reduced income would mean that there would not be enough to pay rent that month.

Medical social workers at CCMC offered a solution: the Family Assistance Fund. Administered by the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation, the fund has helped more than 200 families overcome financial hurdles when they could not qualify for other assistance.

Like the Grahams, families whose economic lives and wellbeing are interrupted by a child’s unexpected illness and hospitalization may need short-term financial help with rent, utilities, gasoline and transportation, meals away from home, and groceries.

“The Family Assistance Fund was created in 2008 by a local family who had been very generous to the hospital’s rebuilding campaign,” explains David Dietrich, Vice President for Advancement for Cottage Health. “They wanted to continue their support and to focus their new giving on a program that would help families who were struggling economically because of the hospitalization of their child.”

“Part of the motivation in creating the fund was to assist families in time of need, but also to communicate a message of compassion and support at a time when families are facing a health crisis and financial hardship,” he adds.

Many families have benefitted from the fund, and often it’s the simplest items that can have a huge impact, notes Liz Lundquist, Director of Children’s Services for Cottage Children’s Medical Center.

“We have many families from the North County who must travel to and from the hospital for many days and weeks,” says Liz. “A gift card to pay for gas can lift a financial burden that seems almost insurmountable for some families.”

Support from the community, both outside and inside the hospital walls, has been vital to growing the Family Assistance Fund to reach more families in need.

In the past two years, the Santa Barbara 100 (SB100), a premier charity cycling event held in Santa Barbara, has raised more than $25,000 to support the Family Assistance Fund.

“The cycling community in Santa Barbara County is strong, and the opportunity to support the Family Assistance Fund is a very tangible way for us to give back to those in need,” says Tricia Middleton, president of the SB100.

Seeing firsthand the impact the fund can have on families when they are most vulnerable, a group of employees at Cottage was inspired to create a new fund designated specifically for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Parents of babies in the NICU often are faced with hospital stays that can span several months, and the financial burdens can be daunting.

The Vivian Beutel NICU Family Assistance Fund was created to honor a beloved NICU nurse who passed away unexpectedly in 2015 from a brain aneurysm.

“Vivi was a nurse in the NICU for 15 years. She was well loved by everyone and just an incredible person,” says Diane Bock, an NICU nurse who was a close friend. “We wanted to honor her memory by establishing a special fund in her name.”

Through multi-year pledges, and several larger gifts, Vivi’s former colleagues, patients, friends and family came together to raise the $25,000 required to name the fund.

“We raised $25,000 in gifts and pledges within two months. Most of the money came from employees who made first-time donations in the form of pledges, such as $10 per pay period. Those are adding up and making a huge difference,” Diane adds.

The families who receive assistance are appreciative and surprised at the extent of support that Cottage offers, says Stacy Peterson, medical social worker.

“It brings people a sense of relief to be able to focus on their child while in the hospital and not be preoccupied with the stress of finances during an already difficult time.”

At home in Orcutt, little Stella Graham is back to her rambunctious self, full of boundless energy, now that her diabetes is under control. Her mom Jennifer reflects with gratitude on the help they received from the Family Assistance Fund.

“It was a lifesaver for us,” she says. “I want to thank everybody who’s ever donated to the fund.”

In 2016 SBCH Foundation hosted a special tour and reception to honor the memory of the late Dr. E. Scott Conner, a highly-respected Santa Barbara neurosurgeon, on what would have been his 65th birthday. Through the generosity of his wife Maryann, his sister and brother-in-law Jane and Byron Allen, and close friend Kyle Wescoat, Operating Room #15 has been dedicated in Dr. Conner’s memory.

An additional contribution from Maryann Conner has also created a fund to support the ongoing training and professional development for surgical technicians at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

DEDICATED VOLUNTEER AND PHILANTHROPIST

Volunteers at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital help patients and visitors navigate their stay or visit in the hospital. Elizabeth Mosher was a talented vocalist, professor, Fulbright scholar and beloved hospital volunteer for eight years, serving at the front desk to greet people with a smile and a pleasant conversation. Her dedication to our patients and families was evident in her unwavering commitment to volunteering each week and her willingness to lend a hand at every opportunity.

Sadly, on May 23, 2016, Elizabeth passed away at the age of 80. Because Elizabeth cared so much about the hospital and our community, Elizabeth’s niece Caroline Sullivan wanted to leave a legacy in Elizabeth’s name. Her aunt loved art and gardening, so Caroline decided to honor Elizabeth by supporting the hospital and receiving recognition in the outdoor garden and interior art. With this generous gift, Elizabeth’s voice will live on in the songs of the birds and the lyrical art found at the hospital campus. Philanthropic legacies like Elizabeth Mosher’s help GVCH continue its work to provide quality health care in an atmosphere of healing and restoration.

The Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital Foundation sponsored the 34th Annual SYVCH Health Fair at the Marriott Hotel in Buellton on October 1, 2016. More than 1,100 individuals participated in the event which featured 49 health-related vendors and offered 360 free flu vaccines, osteoporosis screenings and Hands-Only CPR training, and provided low-cost bike helmets to all ages. In addition, the Matter of Balance program simulation area assessed risks for a fall, and offered blood pressure checks. This event was made possible by a generous grant, and a private donation funded the cost of the flu vaccines.

Cottage Health offers classes in infant/child CPR, and HeartSaver adult CPR which includes the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). To find a class visit cottagehealth.org

Cal Poly Dance Marathon earns bragging rights for hosting 2017’s highest fundraising first-year Miracle Network Dance Marathon program in the nation! In March Cal Poly San Luis Obispo held its inaugural Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon on campus for 12 continuous hours. Students danced overnight and into the morning and heard from patients and families helped by Cottage Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). One Cal Poly senior took the stage to share the story of how CCMC doctors saved her life.

“It’s so much more than dancing,” said Ann Peyrat, CMN Gift Officer at Cottage Health. “The students take on leadership roles, hold weekly meetings, do event planning and organize everything from catering,

soliciting, sponsors, to marketing the event and managing the social media. They promote awareness about families in our community facing pediatric illness and raise funds throughout the year. We couldn’t be more honored to have their support.”

The event is a huge undertaking and Cottage is grateful to everyone who participated, including sponsors, donors, and the 435 student dancers.

“It’s so great to see how many people are in this room that I’ve never seen before and that are so excited for the kids,” said CPDM Executive Director Haley Stegall, on stage in front of the room full of dancers. “I really wanted this to bring every edge of campus together. It was about all of Cal Poly coming together to fundraise for our community and for the generation of tomorrow.”

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE

There are 300 Miracle Network Dance Marathon programs in schools across the country. Each program is entirely student-run and 100% of funds raised go directly to the school’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospital—in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, that hospital is Cottage Children’s Medical Center.

Cal Poly Students raised more money in their first year than any other school. A typical first year program raises $10,000.

Dance Marathon is the largest student-led philanthropic movement benefiting children’s charities in North America. High school and college students spend a year learning valuable leadership and life skills while raising funds and gathering awareness for kids and families experiencing pediatric illness. In 2016 UCSB held its 3rd Annual Dance Marathon, “Dancing to Make a Difference”. To date UCSB Dance Marathon has raised more than $50,000 for Cottage Children’s Medical Center!

To become involved in Cal Poly Dance Marathon, Dance Marathon at UCSB (GauchoThon), or to start your own Dance Marathon (high schools encouraged for 2-to-4-hour events), contact Ann Peyrat, CMN Gift officer at Cottage Health: [email protected]

HELPING COTTAGE CARE FOR KIDS

Last year, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals partners in our community raised more than $750,000 for Cottage Children’s Medical Center (CCMC), helping to provide life-saving care and treatment to our youngest patients. Credit Unions for Kids has become the second highest CMN fundraising partner for CCMC.

Page 42: THE MAGAZINE OF COTTAGE HEALTH 2016 annual … MAGAZINE OF COTTAGE HEALTH SPRING 2017 Corby’s Story: iMRI technology opens new treatment options Moments Live On: Celebrating 125

I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and when I was five years old my parents decided to upend their well-established careers to move our family to California in order to give my brother and me better opportunities for success. My mother—who spoke very little English—was a nurse and, with great determination, was able to travel to Los Angeles to sit for the Registered Nurse board exams. She passed the exam, and it was her RN license that enabled our family to establish residency, and later gain citizenship, in the United States.

Growing up in Thousand Oaks, I had the opportunity to attend good public schools and, eventually, I made my way to UCSB. I double majored in biology and sociology and, as is often the case, even after graduation in 2010 I had no idea what type of career I wanted. But Santa Barbara was home now. I had taken an EMT course at Santa Barbara City College in 2008, and during my job search, that experience helped me get my first medical position—in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Emergency Department. I was headed for a career and, as a wonderful bonus, gained what became a second family.

During college I had thought I wanted to become a physician, even going as far as taking the MCAT and starting the process to apply to medical school twice. But it was my work in the ED that made me realize I wanted to be a nurse rather than a physician.

Being able to focus on a small number of patients gives nurses the opportunity to provide holistic care—not only for physiological issues but social, psychological, developmental and spiritual concerns as well. Nurses are advocates, educators, counselors, case managers, researchers and leaders. We wear what can seem like an infinite number of hats, with compassion and professionalism. This is why I chose to go into nursing.

Receiving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is an achievement that would not have been possible without support from family, friends, faculty and the scholarships I have received from philanthropists through the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation. I know I speak on behalf of all of the CSU Channel Islands/Cottage Health students who have received scholarships when I say: We thank you. We thank you for helping us accomplish our goals. And, we know you are not only giving us financial support, you are telling us that you value our stories, our journeys, that you have faith in us and that you view nursing as an essential part of this community’s future. For most of us, the milestone of attending our BSN pinning ceremony this year is in large part due to your thoughtful generosity. We are so very grateful.

Thank you to the CSU Channel Islands faculty and staff, Director Karen Jensen, and Cottage Health staff and Scholarship Committee members who administer the scholarship program.

GREG SHINN, BSN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTCalifornia State University, Channel Islands BSN Program at Cottage Health

How philanthropy changed my life…AND MY NURSING CAREER

Receiving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is an achievement that would not have been possible without support from family, friends, faculty and the scholarships I have received from philanthropists through the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation.

Moving from a CD to a gift annuity can harvest real value for you and your community

A charitable gift annuity could be right for you:

• If you have a CD that you have rolled over multiple times to disappointing rates or are looking for a worthy alternative.

• If you are tired of watching the market’s ups and downs and have a stock that needs to find a higher calling.

A charitable gift annuity is a lifetime contract with fixed payments. Unlike a CD, when you fund a gift annuity you know what your payment rate is this year, next year and for as long as you live.

The decision to fund a gift can harvest a lifetime of benefits, so please call us and your advisor to see if a gift annuity is right for you.
