EDITORIAL

We have just experienced another highly successful year and a promis-ing start to 2017. We succeeded in expanding our market position with a 30% increase in revenue. Demaclenko meanwhile trusts the expertise of over 100 highly qualified employees, whose motivation and passion make them our real assets and the future of the company.

During the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup St. Moritz 2017, we organized a well-attended panel discussion on the role of technical snowmaking. Together with high-ranking scientists, economists and business people, we looked at the impact of technical snowmaking on the success of ski resorts and preservation of our mountain regions.

If we consider technical snowmaking under these aspects, the problems with consumption of natural resources increasingly lose their critical power: along with detachable installations, fully atomized snowmaking is considered the major innovation in the skiing industry, contributing more than any other factor to the success of winter sports destinations.

Technical snow compensates for a lack of precipitation in the winter months and also delivers water for flora and fauna when the snow melts. As a result, the water consumption is not really consumption, but tem-porary storage, as the water is returned to the natural cycle in spring.

Technical snowmaking guarantees the economic security of residents in skiing areas, and helps preserve local business cycles and the cultural landscape.

In light of this fact, snowmaking systems are viewed less as an essential investment and more as an attractive high-tech element securing the future of our mountain regions.

For this reason, we believe that our products and our company have a strong future, and that we will be able to continue in accordance with alpine culture on our robust growth path.

Andreas Dorfmann - CEO

EFFECTIVE SNOWMAKING IS THE KEY TO WORLD CUP RACESEVERY YEAR, COUNTLESS SKIERS FROM NEAR AND FAR ATTEMPT BREAK-NECK DESCENTS ON THE VARIOUS WORLD CUP SLOPES, CROWNING THE SEASON EVERY TWO YEARS BY TAKING PART IN THE FIS ALPINE SKI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

To ensure that these events take place successfully and safely every year, extensive measures are taken behind the scenes for years in ad-vance to ensure perfect conditions for the race days. Demaclenko very often plays a key role and for years now has been responsible for perfect snow conditions at numerous World Cup races and World Champion-ships in all sorts of different disciplines.

This year, the company is in action on several different World Cup slopes, ensuring perfect surfaces in Val Gardena (Saslong), for the first World Cup race at the Plan de Corones (Erta) and on the famous Streif in Kitzbühel, one of the most famous runs on the ski circuit. A really important part-nership for us this year was the one with the organizers of the FIS Alpine Ski World Championship in St. Moritz 2017, whom we supported with extensive snowmaking so that the basic snow cover on the slopes was

completed already by the end of November. The decisive factor - among many very different components - in ensuring that events run perfectly smoothly is, above all, the availability of the most up-to-date snowmaking systems, which allow the organizers to have the snow they need well in advance.

Thanks to the recent installations on the World Cup slopes in Val Gardena, Plan de Corones, Maribor and Kitzbühel, as well as those for the World Championships in St. Moritz, good snow conditions are 100% guaran-teed. For one thing, this brings the assurance that FIS World Cup races will be held here regularly. For another, efficient snowmaking systems are a factor in the success of the whole ski area and, more than that, for the economy of the whole region.

Demaclenko is delighted with the positive feedback and is already looking forward to more exciting partnerships in the coming year.

AS PART OF ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH TYROL BERG, DEMACLENKO OR-GANIZED A PANEL DISCUSSION ABOUT TECHNICAL SNOWMAKING TODAY, AND ALSO, AS THE „OFFICIAL SUPPLIER“, INVITED EVERYONE TO A SUCCESSFUL CLOSING EVENT AFTER THE FIS ALPINE SKI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ST. MORITZ 2017.

In recent years, snowfall has been below average most winters, and this has impacted on the everyday and economic routines of our win-ter destinations and also of the people living in the mountains. Often, it was only thanks to snowmaking systems coming to the rescue in seasons of low snowfall that the ski area could be prepared in a short time and in just a few nights, so that visitors and racing skiers could enjoy perfect conditions.

However, no matter how advantageous the use of snowmaking sys-tems may be, whenever purchasing one has to be justified, the debate always inevitably turns to issues such as the massive environmental impact and the huge investment required.

What do the facts and figures really tell us? How much does a ski area need to invest for a successful season? Is there still any real chance for them without technical snowmaking? Exactly how great is the effect

of snow guns etc. on our environment? How does technical snowmaking affect the regional economy and the tourism industry?

These were the questions to which answers were sought in an informal discussion with experts including scientists, economists, engineers and professors.

“Snow’s not everything, but without snow everything comes to nothing“. This was the powerful message of the afternoon, a turn of phrase coined during an interview by Josef Burger, CEO of Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel. The purpose of the discussion was to gain an objective overview of the cur-rent situation in order to be prepared for the possible challenges of the future. With moderator Michael Rothleitner from the Schneezentrum Tyrol and our own Managing Director Andreas Dorfmann leading the de-bate, the 5 speakers presented their points of view and highlighted not only the economic but also the social aspects that are closely associated with the subject of snowmaking.

How serious are the effects on nature and the environment in actual fact? Markus Meili, Managing Director of Engadin St. Moritz Moun-tains AG, emphasized that, while nature may not be the same after a construction project as it was before, dealing with the environment in

a resource-efficient way is in our own interests and furthermore, to-day‘s cultural landscape was once changed by people to create what we find worthy of protection today.

Hannes Parth, who as Director of Silvretta Seilbahn AG talked mainly about the state of affairs in Ischgl, pointed out that without tourism or ski areas, a resort like the Paznauntal would have no reason to exist and so the population would gradually move away from the moun-tains into the towns.

Leo Jeker, Switzerland‘s snowmaking pioneer, also addressed this subject, taking the example of Savognin to describe how, even in the early years, tourism was regarded as safeguarding the existence of the whole country. Jeker spoke passionately about the subject of sus-tainability addressed by the moderator, linking it to keeping alpine villages alive, so that the managed landscape is preserved. Achieving this, however, is only possible thanks to the future prospects created by tourism.

Paul Profanter from the Forestry Office in the autonomous province of Bolzano pleaded for increased awareness, especially during the planning and construction phase, in order to keep the actual effects to

a minimum, without impeding the implementation of the proposed construction.

The scientific perspective in the round-table discussion was provided by Robert Steiger from the Free University of Innsbruck. He drew at-tention to visitors’ changing expectations who, for some time now, have regarded technical snow not as a luxury product but as some-thing they expect as standard. On the question of whether technical snowmaking makes economic sense, Steiger advised differentiating between ski areas. For large areas, it is undoubtedly essential, but smaller ski areas will have increasing difficulty in future being able to afford modern snowmaking systems.

During the closing session, all the speakers emphasized that, with the right snowmaking systems and strategic, forward-looking deci-sion-making, it will continue to be possible to keep ski areas operating efficiently and to organize FIS World Cup races and world champion-ships successfully, even though smaller and lower lying ski areas will encounter greater challenges than the leading resorts.

PININFARINA

VENTUS 4.0 08

The brand new Ventus 4.0 with its strong, unique personality confirms Demaclenko‘s push into the medium-sized machine segment.Ventus 4.0 is the result of an analysis of form and performance that has led to radical changes.

The barrel is more modern and attractive and its shape creates an impres-sion of smoothness and softness, but also of originality and strength. The metallic silver sections frame the turbine openings. The extended barrel gives the Ventus 4.0 a lean and powerful look, like a jet engine.

WITH THE NEW VENTUS 4.0, DEVELOPED IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH THE INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN PININFARINA DESIGN STUDIO, DEMACLENKO SETS A NEW STANDARD IN SNOWMAKING, PRESENTING A DISTINCTIVE PRODUCT THAT REALLY STANDS OUT FROM THE CROWD. TODAY, A MODERN MACHINE IS MORE THAN JUST A SNOWMAKER. IT IS A FUNCTIONAL HIGH-TECH DEVICE THAT STIRS THE EMOTIONS.

VENTUS 4.0 09

A new lighting concept the integrated temperature sensor and a line of LEDs, visible and essential, running along the silhouette of the bar-rel, acting as a visual operation indicator. The entire construction of the machine has been redesigned to create a compact product and to facilitate maintenance and service while at the same time providing a stunning visual impact.

The body of the machine is in harmony with the overall appearance of the Ventus 4.0. The futuristic silhouette of the angular yet dynamic shapes and the innovative morphology find a perfect balance between strength and fluid lines, concealing the air inlets of the compressor and thus combining the stylistic and functional aspects of the system. The side surfaces are fitted with quick-release hooks that enable easier opening for maintenance work.

Ventus 4.0 is also unique in its low acoustic impact and significantly reduced sound frequency. Like the Silent, through the use of winglets and the new barrel, the machine has become even more silent and is therefore the perfect partner for anyone designing facilities close to populated areas or those with high tourist traffic, where one of the priorities is to provide a quiet, peaceful environment, immersed in the alpine landscape.

The product is convincing with its best-in-class performances: 20 kW power consumption combined with a water flow of more than 9 l/s, capable of producing up to 90 m³h. Even better aerodynamic perfor-mance, with the new barrel optimizing the air flow produced by the fan.

PRODUCT NEWS 2017

SNOWVISUAL 4.0 – THE COM-PREHENSIVE COMPANION FOR THE SKI RESORT OF THE FUTURE

SNOWVISUAL 4.0 10

SUCCESSFUL OPERATION OF A SNOWMAKING SYSTEM NEEDS MORE THAN PERFECTLY WORKING SNOW GUNS WITH ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC EQUIPMENT – CONTROL SOFTWARE THAT HAS BEEN THOUGHT OUT TO THE LAST DETAIL IS ALSO ESSENTIAL IN ORDER TO MONITOR THE WHOLE SYSTEM AND ENSURE THAT EVERYTHING RUNS SMOOTHLY FOR THE USER.

Innovative ideas, lasting customer value, and the use of leading tech-nology characterize the Demaclenko control software, which reliably and automatically manages the entire system. With its most recent update, Snowvisual has set a new milestone in the development of intelligent components for the snowmaking sector.

FULLY AUTOMATIC OPERATIONFull automation allows snow gun operators to make efficient use of the increasingly short time frames offering suitable weather condi-tions, while the whole system operates perfectly in line with current meteorological conditions. As soon as the operating conditions required for snowmaking are fulfilled, Snowvisual uses its activated automatic system to start up the snowmaking system fully automatically, efficiently, and in the blink of an eye.The highest requirements are placed on the functional safety and reliability of the system, which must be guaranteed even under the harshest of conditions. The Snowvisual control software ensures per-fect, automatic operation, and its performance capability supports a continued high level of system availability.

ESSENTIAL INTERFACES MAKE A VARIETY OF VIEWS POSSIBLEFor Demaclenko, customer needs are the top priority – and controlling the snowmaking system is no exception to this. It was therefore very important for us to be able to offer the customer three different views of the ski resort right from the outset. The software user can choose between geographic, schematic, and tabular views, with all three views offering different advantages. The geographic view works with an orthophoto of the entire ski resort and displays the geographic distribution of the system on the mountain together with the most important features of the various components such as pits, machinery, or even weather stations. The schematic display, for its part, is primar-ily used to show the various pumping stations, allowing the user to choose between different display options. The tabular view provides a good alternative to the geographical view as all the system’s compo-nents are itemized here. This system display also features filters and

sort functions, and ready-made reports of the entire system can be retrieved quickly and easily.

OPTIMIZED COMMUNICATION To guarantee maximum reliability and ultra-fast communication, serial field communications (optical fiber, cable, or wireless technology) are spread across multiple communications servers. Large data transmis-sions are mainly made via optical fiber/Ethernet, while special copper cables are primarily used to communicate along new field lines for snow guns. Existing or other large areas can be connected using wireless or radio technology. Our technicians produce the ideal design and con-figuration for this process even before the planning stage is complete

MEASURING SNOW HEIGHTThe system has a very large number of interfaces between LEITNER, PRINOTH, and DEMACLENKO, making it a compact companion for a well-functioning ski resort. For Demaclenko, however, it is currently and particularly the snow height measuring system from Prinoth which makes the work of the snow operations managed so much easier and the operation of the system even better in terms of protecting resources. The data sent from the snow groomers to Snowvisual allows snow levels on the slopes to be recorded, meaning that operators con identify where more snow needs to be produced and where minimum cov-erage or the target has already been achieved. With this function over-production and the associated unnecessary consumption of raw materials can be efficiently avoided. The latest interface allows the geo image to be superimposed on Snowvisual and therefore directly shows the snow depth measure-ment values. The value created concerns the areas which need more snow and the areas which already have enough snow for optimal slope preparation.

INTEGRATION OF THIRD-PARTY PRODUCTSThe new Snowvisual 4.0 control software features all the industry stand-ard communication protocols and can therefore incorporate third-party devices directly without additional interface (such as Gate Way or simi-lar), after approval of the installed protocol by the manufacturing firms.

INTEGRATION IN EXTERNAL SYSTEMSIn turn, our snow guns feature a freely available communication protocol, allowing direct integration into third-party systems with or without Gate Way.

SNOW EVER

IN NOVEMBER 2016, DEMACLENKO TOOK OVER THE STARTUP COMPA-NY NEVEXN, WHICH IS BASED AT THE „POLO MECCCATRONICA“ INNO-VATION CENTRE IN TRENTO.

Thanks to the scientific innovation that makes it possible to produce snow even at temperatures above freezing point, snow production at temperatures above freezing looks set to be a real revolution in the industry: The same volume of snow is produced, regardless of climatic conditions and with significantly reduced energy consumption. The product is a response to the ever-growing demand for perfect snow-making even in abnormal climatic conditions.

ECOLOGICAL SNOWMAKING AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE FREEZING The machine patented by NeveXN is able to produce high-quality tech-nical snow in temperatures above freezing point with the possible use

of thermal energy from renewable energy sources. Snow4Ever, like all our products, is based entirely on natural resources and therefore has minimal impact on the environment or landscape.„In nature, we only find water simultaneously in 2 states: as a liquid and as water vapor, or as a liquid and as ice“, explains Francesco Besana, CEO of the startup company. „With some technical assistance but without chemical additives, it‘s possible to define a point at which water exists in all 3 states. Regardless of the outside temperature, these conditions can be created inside the system, so that the water is turned into real snow by the formation of crystals.“

TELFS PRODUCTION SITE

SMART PRODUCTION FOR CUSTOMER-SPECIFIC SOLUTIONSMATTHIAS BECK, MANAGER OF THE TELFS PRODUCTION SITE, AND SEBASTIAN WOLF, HEAD OF PRODUCTION AT DEMACLENKO, EXPLAINED TO US HOW PRODUCTION IS CAREFULLY THOUGHT THROUGH, DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL.

How long has Demaclenko been manufacturing in Telfs, which parts of production were moved here?„We began production in Telfs at the start of the 2015 financial year. The propeller machines Titan 2.0 and Ventus are made here. The Telfs site opened in 2008. In 2011 a big extension was built in the form of a 3500 m² workshop, plus an additional 10,000 m² of outdoor space. In 2013 the logistics areas and storage capacity were increased, and in 2016 the office and production areas were expanded again. Altogether, the site now covers an area of 45,000 m². Of course, the workshop area available to Demaclenko is supported by the complete infrastruc-ture of the LEITNER Group.“

How many Demaclenko employees are there in Telfs?„The LEITNER group employs 270 people at the Telfs site, and of those, in high season, up to 50 highly skilled workers are employed on Dema-clenko production work. Our peak production times are in August and September, and sometimes even into October, with the construction program gradually increasing from about May and then leveling off again in the fall. In late fall we may receive some late orders but the volume never matches that of the summer.“

2016 was a very successful year for Demaclenko: What role did the Telfs site play in that?„During the 2016 financial year, we built just here in Telfs over 1000 propel-ler snowmaking machines in Telfs alone. Because of the huge production capacity available to us, we’re in a position to customize our production. That’s to say, we only make snowmaking machines that customers have actually ordered. Demaclenko does not have any machines that are made for storage which are subsequently retrofitted for customers. Because of the scale of our capacity, we can produce up to 50 snow guns per week.“

Which countries are supplied from here and what are the advantages of the Telfs site for Demaclenko customers?„From Telfs we mainly supply the Alpine region, i.e. the traditional markets of Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France. We’ve also handled a few orders for China from here and smaller and medium-sized orders for Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Argentina and Russia. The advantage of Telfs is definitely that we have ultra-modern industrial facilities available to us here with the infrastructure to match, all set up for large-scale production. For example, we can handle up to 20 trucks a day here in the dispatch and incoming goods areas. In Telfs everything is focused on efficient production. That helps with costs as well as with throughput. I’d also like to say that here, in Tyrol we have found the ideal location for our company. So for us, Tyrol is not just a center for winter tourism, but also the center of our tourism industry.“

How does the production of snow guns run, how accurately can you plan – how flexible do you need to be?„As I said, we produce exactly the version of a snow gun that a specific customer ordered, with all their options. On the individual propeller machines, about 80% of the parts are the same, regardless of the cus-tomer configuration. But there are also components with restocking times of up to 18 weeks. Essentially, we use a Europe-wide, in some cas-es even worldwide, supply chain for our components, controlled by SAP. This means that the length of the production process in each individual case depends on our stocks of items with a long lead time. If we have those in house, in extreme cases we can deliver within 2 to 3 weeks.“

What are your expectations for 2017, and how are you preparing for it?„We expect to see further growth in 2017. In the light of that, we will be making even more capacity available so that we can continue to guarantee our high delivery reliability and at the same time maintain the high quality of our snowmaking machines.“

ST. JOHANNThe ski area of St. Johann is especially popular with families but is becoming more and more popular with young and old alike. During the construction works, the team from Demaclenko concentrated on improving the performance of the existing system, delivering a powerful cooling tower that guarantees efficient snowmaking throughout the season. Because the water is at the perfect temperature, better use can be made even of marginal temperatures. In addition to supplying 18 cooling towers and ins-talling a pumping station, Demaclenko also delivered a total of more than 27 snow guns to the Tyrolean ski resort, all connected to Snowvisual, the latest version of the control software.

SCHULTZ GROUPIn 2016, the Schultz Group embarked on an extensive program of investment in the Spieljoch moun-tain railways in Fügen. In 2016, DEMACLENKO delivered a total of 79 propeller machines and 27 snow lances to the Schultz Group. The 1000th machine produced by the company in 2016, a special edition, was among those going to the Spieljoch ski resort to guarantee excellent conditions. DEMACLENKO had already delivered 230 snow guns to four ski areas operated by the Schultz Group in the previous year. With a total of 330 snow guns delivered over two years, this is the company‘s biggest single order in the Alpine region. „Our first priority is to improve the reliability of the snow on the Spieljoch and so optimize the quality of the slopes,“ explains the Managing Partner of the Schultz Group, Heinz Schultz. „That means we can already set the tone for the coming winter season. By building a new storage reservoir in 2017 and purchasing 60 new snow guns from Demaclenko, we will bring snow reliability on the Spieljoch to a new level.“

BERGBAHN AG KITZBÜHELThis year once again, Demaclenko continued to build on the trust placed in it by Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel and further consolidated its long-standing partnership with one of the best and most famous ski resorts in the world. This year‘s project concentrated primarily on in-stalling a new snowmaking system on the Kitzbühler Horn, which until recently could only be used when there was natural snow. Ski pioneer Franz Reisch first skied the Kitzbüheler Horn back in 1893. “Even with

the very best equipment, skiing isn’t possible without snow,” said Josef Burger, Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel Executive Board Member, at the opening ceremony. 55 snow guns were installed and a reservoir was constructed. “We are not only ensuring the future of skiing on the ‘Horn’ but also 100 jobs as well,” said Burger.

SCHÖNECKThe town of Schöneck is in the middle of the Erzgebirge nature reserve and is part of the federal state of Saxony. The ski area was the first in central Germany to receive the “Slope Quality Seal“ which is awarded every year in cooperation with the German Ropeway Association (VDS), and this was partly on account of its investment in snow reliability and such matters. The German ski area is a paradise not only for downhill skiers but also for nature-lovers and cross-country skiing fans. In order to ensure snow reliability in future, the existing snowmaking systems have been modernized and ex-tended. Demaclenko boosted the performance of the main pumping station to 100 l/s or 550 kW and installed numerous snow guns on the valley run, which ensure a perfect surface on the slopes and support the existing snow guns with their high output. Furthermore, from this year the pumping station and the propeller machines will be controlled by the control software Snowvisual, guaranteeing that the system will operate efficiently.

SASLONG

PROJECTS 2016 ITALY

Once again, a great deal of work has been carried out on the snow-making system Saslong in order to be perfectly prepared for the FIS World Cup races. After a number of phases of the project in recent years, Demaclenko has focused this year on installing a new pump sta-tion and cooling system in order to meet the rising requirements for the hosting of the well known Worldcup race. Thanks to the high-per-formance pump system which has been customised with precision, the snowmaking system can now be guaranteed to operate with even greater efficiency, permitting the production of snow whenever it is needed. „Through the agreement and the cooperation with Dema-clenko, we have secured a partnership which will guarantee that our

international event always goes ahead. There is an even greater guar-antee of snow thanks to the latest machines installed on the Saslong. Paying tribute to the excellent partnership with Demaclenko, Rainer Senoner, president of the Val Gardena-Gröden Organizing Commit-tee, said, “That means, firstly, that we can guarantee being able to hold the World Cup races in the Val Gardena as planned and, secondly, that we can plan the season for all our partners, such as the Interna-tional Ski Federation FIS, the publicity agencies and TV broadcasters.“

LIMONE PIEMONTELimone Piemonte is a small mountain village close to France, the Ligurian Sea and the Côte d’Azure. The ski area is one of the most well-known in the Southern Alps and, with its 80 km of ski slopes, attracts numerous winter sports enthusiasts from far and wide to the so-called „Riserva Bianca“. The 18 lifts are not only suitable for families and children; experts and pro-fessionals can also have plenty of fun in this ski area. The newly installed snowmaking system is designed mainly to ensure reliable snow on slopes with low snowfall, and the 2016 project is only one part of the overall construction project. The first stage of the project consisted of installing a pumping station and delivering more than 30 snow guns, controlled by Snowvisual. To ensure good connections to the snow guns, a new network of pipes was laid and new pits installed.

KRONPLATZThis year, Demaclenko was able to persuade all 3 operating companies at Plan de Corones of the efficiency of its snow guns and so delivered more than 37 Titan 2.0 snow guns to Kronplatz Seilbahn AG, Olanger Seilbahnen and Seilbahnen St. Vigil AG. Once the snowmaking equipment for the en-tire reconstruction of the Hinterberg slope – including snow guns, concrete pits and cast iron pipes– had been delivered to the Kronplatz Seilbahn AG, the Demaclenko team in St. Vigil focused on the efficient production of snow on the World Cup slope, which was equipped with over 15 Titan snow guns. An additional benefit for the targeted production of snow on the racing slope is also the programming of the Snowvisual control system, which can be used across the entire ski area through the integration of third party products.

BRIGELSBrigels is in the Surselva region and is part of the canton of Grisons. This family-friendly win-ter sports region is popular mainly for its relaxed skiing and extra-wide slopes. Following our successful partnership with this area in the past, last year we were once again commissioned to replace or modernize the snowmaking systems in 3 parts of the ski area, with the one around the Burleun definitely representing the most important task for Demaclenko. There, numerous concrete pits and snow lances were installed, which will make the Demaclenko system dating from 2013 considerably more effective. The Gneida/Curtginet and Dentel Vals sections rounded off our project in this alpine area of Eastern Switzerland.

ANDERMATT – SEDRUN

PROJECTS 2016 20

In 2016, Demaclenko extended the existing snowmaking system at Sedrun up to the Oberalp, where the link to the An-dermatt ski resort is to be further expanded. The construction phase in 2016 consisted mainly of the construction of field lines and the delivery of 18 snowmakers, constituting the first planned construction for the future ski area with a total of 120 kilometers of slopes.

CHAMONIXThe „La Flégère“ ski area is not far from the Mont Blanc massif and is one of the 2 most well-known ski areas in the winter sports resort of Chamonix. A total of 18 EOS 8 lances were installed on the „La Trappe“ and „Evettes“ slopes, while the lower section, because of its natural features and width, was ideal for using tower-mounted Titan 2.0 propeller machines. As well as adding new snow guns, a new high-pressure pump was installed in the main pumping station, which will significantly increase the throughput. The whole installation, including the snow guns, pump and new compressor, was integrated into the Snowvisual control software, allowing the system to be operated fully automatically.

PRAZ DE LYSThe project to install a new snowmaking system in order to link the two ski areas of Praz de Lys and Sommand is regarded by the manager of the two companies, Jean-Philippe Dhabère, as a „guarantee for the resort and for winter sports.“

The decision-makers opted for Demaclenko mainly because they were impressed by the energy- and air-efficient operation of the snow guns. They invited the company to implement the entire project, which will last for more than 3 years and involve the delivery of more than 125 snow lances, 60 of which were installed in Praz de Lys last fall, while the remaining 65 are planned for the coming year. The customer chose the EOS 2, which mainly supplies the area‘s narrow slopes, and the EOS 4, which strikes an excellent balance between the volume of snow and energy efficiency to create perfect conditions for a successful season. Demaclenko was therefore able to seize the opportunity to construct one of the first major turnkey installa-tions since gaining a foothold in the market in France.

PROJECTS 2016 22

PROJECTS 2016USA

Maribor is best-known as the venue for World Cup racing on the Alpine Skiing circuit, and as such already has a long tradition in the world of al-pine winter sports. To ensure that equally perfect skiing conditions are provided for both racing athletes and recreational skiers, numerous Lenko machines have already been ensuring optimal snow reliability at the ski resort for a number of years. The partnership was further developed last year, with the delivery of more than 20 high-performance snow guns. The propeller machines gave a last-minute kick to the snow cover, enabling

the World Cup races to go ahead safely and once again demonstrating the importance of an effective snowmaking system. One little detail: although the International Ski Federation (FIS) has only been around for 50 years, the Maribor course is already celebrating the 53rd round of World Cup races, at an altitude of 300 meters.

PROJECTS 2016 SLOWENIA

ELK MOUNTAINELK Mountain is in the US state of Pennsylvania and has more than 30 ski slopes of different degrees of difficulty, managed by Chris L. Weldon, the Mountain Manager for the ski area: „The Demaclenko products not only met our expecta-tions but far exceeded them, and so we can look back with great pleasure on our first successful season with the new Titan 2.0. From design to ease-of-use, from snow quality (especially at temperatures around freezing point) to robustness of the equipment and technical support – I could not be more satisfied with our purchasing decision. I’m confident that this marks the start of a long-lasting business relationship and I‘m already looking forward to our next projects with Demaclenko.“

NEWS 2017 CHINA

China is Demaclenko‘s third biggest sales market and as such is be-coming more and more important to Demaclenko‘s international business. Last year, hundreds of snow guns were delivered to China to create perfect snow conditions in several future Olympic ski areas such as the Secret Garden Resort, Fulong and Wanlong. However, it’s not only ski areas that have confidence in the quality of our products: We’re also increasingly creating a storm at other events. For example, in 2016, Titan 2.0 & Co. provided perfect snow for the world-famous snow sculptures produced at the Ice & Snow Festival in Harbin, one of the most famous events in China, where snow sculptures and ice landscapes are created.

Every year since 1985, the International Ice & Snow Festival in Harbin, one of the most impressive anywhere in the world, has been welcoming milions of visitors from all over the world from December to the middle of February, delighting them with artistic creations made of snow and

ice in atmospheric settings. They are to be found all over the city and are beautifully illuminated at night.

Although Harbin is famous for its cold winters thanks to its close prox-imity to Siberia, Old Man Winter requires dedicated support from our heroes in blue in order to generate the 150,000 m³ of snow that is used during just one event. More than 15 snow guns will therefore be deployed to provide the perfect snow required for creating these beautiful works of art. In weeks of work, national and international artists create giant copies of famous sculptures and buildings from all over the world to create a snow city that you can walk around consisting of breathtakingly beautiful snow and ice sculptures.

The host city, Harbin, is in north-east China and is the capital of the province of Heilongjiang. Harbin, with about 3.5 million inhabitants in its urban area, is one of the 10 biggest cities in China.

PRAZ DE LYS 24

THE EOS LANCES PROVIDE ENERGY-EFFICIENT HIGH PERFORMANCE IN FRANCEWE SPOKE TO ALAIN CONSTANTIN, PRESIDENT OF THE PRAZ DE LYS SKI RESORT, ABOUT HOW EFFICIENT OUR SNOWMAKING SYSTEMS ARE AND WHY THOSE RESPONSIBLE ON SITE HAVE OPTED FOR A LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH DEMACLENKO.

Let’s talk a bit about the winter season just ending. How was it? Are you satisfied overall, in spite of the unfavorable weather conditions, which have made it difficult to open the slopes at the end of Novem-ber in the past few years? The season really was a tough one because of the lack of snow in early winter, with the first snow coming one month after the official opening date. Snowfall was very limited throughout the entire winter. The snowgroomer drivers had to work extremely carefully all season long to offer quality slopes despite the thin layer of snow.

For almost a century, France has been one of the top skiing desti-nations worldwide. Here are some recent figures from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO) statistics: 325 snowmaking systems make skiing possible, with France also accounting for 30% of the total skiable area in Europe, ahead of Switzerland, Austria and Italy. And France surpasses the other alpine countries in tourist numbers, too: 53.9 million skiers daily, compared with 51.9 million in Austria and

53.9 million in the United States. Do you think France will be able to continue to achieve these excellent figures in spite of several prob-lems?  The visitor figures in French ski resorts are very similar to those in the United States. The snow conditions in a given winter determine whether France tops the United States or vice versa. The repeated shortage of snow in the past few years could have an adverse effect on the French tourism figures. That is why the departments and regions have put so-phisticated subsidy packages in place to help the resorts upgrade their technical snowmaking equipment, allowing the destination to retain its good placing worldwide.

In the German-speaking alpine regions, the lack of snow has led peo-ple to question the future of the resorts. Their response to conserva-tionist critics, who call artificial snow a waste of water and energy, is that without artificial snow, tourists would flock to other destina-tions, forcing the resorts to close, with a serious economic impact on certain regions. What do you think about this? Does this debate exist in France too?The French resorts face the same arguments from conservationists, who criticize the amount of water withdrawn from the natural environment to produce technical snow, without taking two key points into account:

REFERENCE PROJECT

Page 25: THE MAGAZINE FOR THE SNOW SPECIALISTS N°5 SNOW WORLD · HARBIN ICE & SNOW FESTIVAL page 23 INTERVIEW PRAZ DE LYS page 24 DEMACLENKO WORLDWIDE page 26 INDEX 02 Contact/ Editor 5th

PRAZ DE LYS 25

> The water used to create the artificial snow is stored in high-altitude reservoirs created specifically for this purpose.

> The permits to withdraw water from the natural environment to refill these reservoirs are limited to periods when water is abundant (generally spring, when the snowpack melts).

On the other hand, visitors who come to the resorts just want to ski, and don’t care whether the snow is natural or technical. As a result, technical snow is the only way to guarantee good skiing conditions for all skiers.  The current project with Demaclenko is important, or in other words, the snowmaking system is essential for you to provide suitable condi-tions in ski areas, isn’t it?Natural snow at the Praz de Lys / Sommand resort is usually consistent during winter (the area is at an altitude of between 1500 and 2000 m), though snow can be scarce at the start of the season. The main objective of this system is to produce a 25 cm layer of snow in November, so that the ski area can open during the end-of-year vacation. The project, launched in spring 2016, will cover 25% of the slopes in the ski area, which will allow 50% of the ski lifts to open.

How did you choose your technical snow provider? What were the deciding factors? We chose the provider who offered the highest performance system, in particular with the latest generation snow guns. The EOS snow guns have the lowest air consumption on the market (12 Nm³/h at a regulated pressure of 5.5 bar). Energy consumption is low-

er thanks to the installation of smaller compressors, due to the low air consumption of the EOS guns. This approach is environmentally-friendly.The capacity of the pumping station was increased to 900 m³/h at 30 bar, guaranteeing the simultaneous operation of all lances. The system di-mensions allow all of the snow guns to be operated simultaneously, with the best air flow reserves (approximately 30%). Compared with com-peting products, Demaclenko offered the lowest installed capacity with the best power reserves (37%) for the transformers fitted in the snow production system.

What aspects did you particularly appreciate during the years of close cooperation with our company when implementing the system? We particularly appreciated the fact that the Demaclenko team listened to our concerns. We formed a partnership from the very first contacts: The Praz de Lys/Sommand ski resort has planned the construction of a large system as a reference project on the French market, with the installation of 120 snow guns.
