Japan has long been at the forefront of
nanomaterials development, especially in
electronics and biomedicine. W ith forest covering
approximately 70% of its land area, Japan is also
at the forefront of cellulose nanofiber research
and development. Applications in textiles,
sanitary products, packaging, composites and the
automotive industry have been heavily targetted
and efforts are bearing fruit with a number of
products appearing on the market in 2017.
This trend will continue for a number of
years thanks to the combination of significant
government support, clear market needs (strong,
flexible and environmentally friendly materials),
consumer demand for biodegradable and
renewable products, producer innovation and
OEM innovation.
