FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Members and Friends,

“God loves you, and I love you, too.” This popular declaration of a few years ago is still relevant today. God

loves you! He created you and molded you into the kind of person you are today. God knows your every need,

and has promised to fulfill those needs (Philippians 4:19). God knows where you fall short of His will for you.

And He forgives you each time you confess your shortcomings (1 John 1:9). God loves you so much that He let

His Son Jesus die for you (John 3:16; Matthew 27:50).

God knows about your illness. He cares! Jesus spent as much time healing as he did teaching. When Jesus

landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick (Matthew 14:14; NIV). Do

not forget to pray daily for healing when you are ill. God uses doctors and their skills to promote healing, but

ultimately, the body heals or does not heal itself. Pray that God’s healing spirit will surround your body and

stimulate it to provide the healing you need.

God knows about your problems and He cares about them also. He knows about the decisions you have to

make, the stress you feel, the heartaches, the depressions, the despair. God loves you so much that He wants to

relieve you of all of these. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7; NIV). Take them

to the Lord in prayer. There is always hope through prayer.

Not only does God love you; Dianne and I too love you. We rejoice when you rejoice, we cry when you cry, we

suffer when you suffer. It is our earnest desire to uplift you and support you through all the problems and

illnesses that you face. Paul writes, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and

asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding

(Colossians 1:9; NIV). This we strive to do. We are not always able to spend the time with each of you that we

would like because of the other responsibilities we have, but that does not mean that we do not care. We do care,

and you are always on our hearts. We pray that God will strengthen you, guide you, and bless you mightily.

This Thanksgiving season, be sure and give God thanks because He loves you and wants to help you with all

your problems and needs.

Prayerfully yours,

Pastor Harold

Trinity United Methodist Church Council Minutes – September 2014

The Church Council meeting was held in the Goodhart Classroom on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Those in attendance were:

Pastor Harold, Paul Bitner, Karen Boutcher, Jim Connors, Sue Connors, Dave Evelhoch, Janet Grove, Jenny

Harkins, Glorianne Hilsinger, Tom Holmes, Marty Sheaffer, Mike Wadel, Corrie Wadel, Jack Wyrick

Tom Holmes called the meeting to order. Pastor Harold read a message from Five Practices of Cultivating

Fruitfulness by Bishop Robert Schnase, a passage from Matthew 25:40 and offered an opening prayer.

The secretary’s report from August 2014 meeting was reviewed. With a few changes, a motion was made by

Janet Grove and seconded by Karen Boutcher to approve the minutes. The September minutes were approved

by verbal vote.

Marty Sheaffer reported that after missing several months of payments, we’ve been able to start paying our

Shares of Ministry again. Paying them for the last 2 months in a row. The treasurer’s report was reviewed and

approved as presented.

Committee reports were given as follows:

STEWARDSHIP – Pastor Harold reported that the Stewardship committee met recently, more details to be

shared soon. Dave Evelhoch stated that he heard Scott was arranging a once a month eat-out event to raise

funds to help with the General Fund. Pastor Harold confirmed that Scott and Doris Goodhart are working on

this. Dave stated the first of these events would be in October at Chili’s in Carlisle, pending approval by the

Council. Dave made a motion to approve this type of event for the remaining months of 2014 at local

restaurants, yet to be determined. The motion was seconded by Glorianne and approved by verbal vote. It was

suggested to put this information in the Church Bulletin.

TDCC –Sue Connors reported that the Day Care holds fund raisers of selling Giant gift cards, with the Day

Care receiving a portion of the cost of the gift cards.

WORSHIP – Jack Wyrick reported 55 to 60 were in attendance at the Church Picnic on August 24th. The

following is scheduled:

Sept 28th

– Children’s Choir Begins

Oct 5th

– World Communion Sunday

Oct 12th

– Laity Sunday (date changed due to Pastor’s vacation)

Oct 19 – Children’s Sabbath

Tom thanked Karen for all her help with the Church Picnic.

VISION – Tom reported the Vision Team had a great kick-off with group discussion at Sunday services. Tom

stated he thought the discussions were a good exercise and time well spent. Pastor Harold also stated that he

felt a spark was started as a result of the group discussions and said more details will be handed out next Sunday

by the Vision Team. Tom thanked Glorianne for her participation in this endeavor.

BUILDING COMMITTEE –Dave Evelhoch stated they are getting ready for the storage shed at the

Fellowship center. RotoRooter was called in and they found that the cast iron pipe was not collapsed as

originally believed but it was clogged. RotoRooter cleared the pipe. Jim Connors has a bill from Rosenberry’s

for checking the septic system.

AUDIT –Nothing to report.

TRUSTEES – Jim Connors reported that there is water damage in a closet in the day care center. Inspection is

due in November and there are 5 doors that are rusted and rotting. These doors need to be replaced and the

work cannot be done internally, due to the door frames which are set in concrete. This will require concrete

being broke open and not an easy job. Jim will get prices for this work. With the winter weather approaching,

Dave does not want to obligate himself to plow snow at the Church and Day Care Center. Jim said there has

been talk of a heated tractor with plow and belly mower. They do not have the cost for a tractor. There was

discussion to possibly rent a plow but no decisions have been made. After a general discussion, it was

suggested that everyone talk with people they know who may be interested in plowing this winter.

OUTREACH – Glorianne said the next meal for My Brother’s Table is scheduled for December 7th

.

YOUTH –Corrie reported that the Youth had their kick-off meeting on Sunday, September 14th

. The group

went on a picnic at Fuller Lake, played games and hiked.

Page 5: THE LOVELETTER

The Uprise Fest is in Shippensburg on Saturday, September 20th

with 9 youth attending. Corrie said this is very

nice event if any member is interested in attending. October 5th

is Activity Night; October 19th

is a Halloween

Outing. November 2nd

is Activity Night at Trinity Fellowship Center.

FOOD BANK – Corrie asked if they can schedule a Harvest Service on November 16th

to allow time to make

baskets for Thanksgiving.

SHUT-INS –Nothing new to report.

UMW - Janet reported that the UMW will be preparing Christmas Holiday Bags for South Mountain

Restoration Center at the November meeting. December 10 is the next senior dinner. The Picnic on September

5th

for the Special Needs Group Home was held inside because it was so hot. UMW and Lion’s Club are

planning a Christmas themed dinner in December and more details will be coming as this is planned.

SCOUTING – Nothing to report.

OLD BUSINESS – Tom gave the following update on the new computer system:

Mike and Paul gave Tom five (5) options for a new computer.

Computer cost - between $600 and $1,050;

Media Software - $450;

Microsoft Office Package – between $200 and $300 + an anti-virus program.

These options all meet the requirements that the Church needs. Paul recommended the unit which costs $850.

Adding in the software packages (if needed) the total will be just under $2,000. Dave will take this information

to the Craft Show Committee. Tom thanked everyone who helped with this initiative.

NEW BUSINESS:

Dave inquired if the Craft Shows need to have Council approval, with the new FR Policy that was approved.

The Council had already approved the Craft shows so no further approval is required.

Tom read a letter from Mission Central for requesting a donation/contribution. Mission Central has suggested

$750 to $1,500 but Pastor Harold advised that they would be appreciative of any contribution. It was stated that

perhaps this appeal falls under Outreach. There was a general discussion of how donations to the Mission Can

are allocated.

October is usually for Food Baskets.

November is typically for Blanket Fund.

Janet said that each year UMW has been giving the proceeds from the blanket fund to Mission Central. Perhaps

the October Mission Can donations can be designated to Mission Central this year.

A notice will be put in the Bulletin with details about changing the Mission Can contributions so the

congregation is aware of the needs.

Pastor Harold handed out the Church Conference questionnaire which is required each year. Members were

asked to review the questions and this will be discussed at the October 20th

meeting. Pastor Harold suggested

that next month the Council concentrate on Church Conference and the Vision Team project.

Among the papers distributed were Policies on Church weddings, baptisms and funerals. Pastor Harold would

like to work on revising these policies in the November and December meetings. Tom asked for volunteers to

form a committee and the following individuals stepped forward:

Pastor Harold Jenny Harkins Jim Connors Mike Wadel

Pastor Harold asked Dave to provide the Policy covering the Fellowship Center to the Council for review.

Recently while Dave was away someone inquired about using the Center and Pastor had no idea of cost or

procedure.

Tom proposed hosting a “Trunk or Treat” event on Halloween night in conjunction with the Lion’s Club. The

idea is to provide a safe place for children to trick or treat and people could park their cars in the parking lot at

Trinity with treats in the trunk. Options include decorating car trunks and dressing in costume. Corrie indicated

that perhaps the Youth could do a haunted themed event on the same night, perhaps in the Fellowship Center.

Corrie thought there was a lot of opportunity for the Youth with this event. Tom suggested serving hot

chocolate and maybe cookies. Glorianne made a motion to approve hosting “Trunk or Treat” with the option of

serving drinks/snacks. Jim Connors seconded the motion and it passed by verbal vote.

Page 6: THE LOVELETTER

Corrie asked if everyone would save their milk jugs, they could be used as lanterns in the parking lot.

Pastor Harold recently cleaned and organized the library. There are books in the Goodhart Room that are not

needed. Some of the books are old but not classics. Some were donated by current Church members and Pastor

suggested having the members look at the books and if they are interested in having the books they donated,

they should take them. Other Church members would be invited to take a book if they would like to. The

books would be available for 1 month and any books left would be given to the Clothing Bank to put on the

“Free” table for any community individuals who may be interested in them. Pastor Harold will reach out to

those current church members who may have donated a book.

Tom thanked Al and Dave for mowing the cemeteries.

Pastor Harold closed the meeting with a prayer.

The next Council meeting will be October 20th

at 7 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jenny Harkins

Thank you! Thank you! In this month of Thanksgiving, please take the time to say thank you to each person who helps to make Trinity a better place for you and your family. Suggestions of people to thank: the many volunteers throughout the church organization - Sunday school teachers, organists/pianists/choirs, youth leaders, council & committee members, liturgists,

acolytes, sound desk, ushers, Clothing Closet workers, kitchen helpers, and others. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

God bless you and your family! Do you bless God every day?

Pray without ceasing. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Your help is needed! Each person --- that means Y-O-U! --- is needed to make Trinity the best

it can be for doing God’s work in our corner of the world. Here are some ways you can help grow God’s kingdom here in Walnut Bottom: … pray daily for our church and its members … support TUMC with your attendance and active participation … invite unchurched people in your social circle to come to TUMC … react positively with encouragement toward other members in our church family … teach, assist, attend Sunday school classes … provide nursery duty … serve as a liturgist … serve on the sound desk … present children’s sermons … participate in the prayer shawl ministry … help Trinity’s Clothing Closet … serve at My Brother’s Table … serve on any number of committees … sing in Trinity’s choirs … Just ask!

Children are also needed to serve as acolytes.

Have other suggestions to make Trinity a better church? Talk to Pastor Harold, Vision Team members, Tom Holmes, or Jim Conner with your ideas and offers to help.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////

QUESTIONS? WHO TO CONTACT? Tom Holmes – Church council concerns

Jim Conner – Trustee concerns, mowing

church properties

Ron Kunkleman – Staff, pastor, and parish

concerns

Pastor Harold – Prayer and visitation requests,

any pastoral concerns

Page 10: THE LOVELETTER

Jack Wyrick, custodian - For all custodial

concerns – stocking restroom supplies, cleaning

in both buildings, opening the church & TFC on

Sunday mornings, etc.

Dave Evelhoch - Maintenance repairs; HVAC

in TFC; and booking TFC facilities

Page 11: THE LOVELETTER

USING TFC OR PAVILION? It is important that your request to use TFC or the pavilion is turned in ASAP in writing.

This applies to EACH & EVERY CHURCH GROUP

AND for PERSONAL RENTALS.

Also, if your group wants to use TFC paper goods, please make your needs known in advance.

Written requests for reservations should be turned in to the church office or to Dave

Evelhoch as soon as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts & also to arrange for HVAC needs.

Any group expecting to use TFC paper goods should let Dave know in plenty of time. Let him know exactly what is needed and then please make a contribution to the Building Fund for such goods.

Do NOT just assume that the facilities will be available OR that the supplies will just be on hand. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Make a joyful noise! Is there a song

in your heart to share? Additional choir members are needed

for the season. See Kim Holmes if you

would be willing to sing in any of the choirs.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

PUBLICITY/COMMUNICATION? If your church group is planning an event that is

open to the public and you want it publicized, see Betty B. Evelhoch ASAP with the basic details. Info will be submitted to cable TV, area newspapers, and posted in church bulletins, newsletters, and website. Facebook and posters are also options. Note that some free publicity sources require weeks of advance notice, so do not wait until the last moment to seek publicity.

YOUR PRAYER LIST? Prayer is the most important conversation of the day. Take it to God before you take it to anyone

else. What should be on your daily prayer list?

Here are some suggestions:

Request more love, wisdom, strength,

transformation of lives, your church, peace of

Jerusalem, world peace, families & their needs,

health, burdens, forgiveness, and our nation.

Pray for Trinity Church and its members – the ill,

shut-in, lonely, disillusioned, depressed, tired,

afraid, discouraged, hurt, mourning, slipping away

from God, military and their families, and anyone

else in need of prayer.

Also, pray with thanksgiving for those who

continue doing God’s work with a cheerful heart

within our church and community

Pray for unity, peace, strength, hope, comfort, and a

reawakening of God’s spirit within each person.

Remember to pray without ceasing.

The power of prayer is amazing!

Life is fragile. Handle with

prayer!

Don’t put people down – unless it is on your

prayer list.

7 days without prayer makes one weak. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><
