Title: The Lotus Collection Project no. 6 Date completed: April 5th, 2011 Media: Art clay silver, jewelry pieces (earrings, necklace chains) and epoxy resin. Dimensions: Lotus + Pattern Design Necklace: 2.2cm x 1.3 cm Lotus Square Earrings: (1.9cm x 1cm) x 2 Simple Pattern Design Necklace: 2.3cm x 1.2cm Round Lotus Dangling Earrings (charm itself): 0.9cm x 1.2cm The jewelry designer “Zoe Chicco” and “Jes MaHarry” influenced this project. For Zoe Chicco, the simplicity had influenced “The Lotus Collection” for example, the way she used the same design but for different jewelry such as earrings or necklaces. I think the designs for Zoe Chicco was more elegant and I did want to include a bit of that in this project. For Jes MaHarry, I interpret her style through the charms that I have made. For example the “Daria” necklace that she have made, I like how its small but then at the same time its not too small that you won’t realize. Since the media that I used for this project was new, I had to experiment a lot with it. First, I tried it with a simple pattern on this round piece of clay. The next thing that I have done was the small charms, and I tried to do it with different thickness, sizes and shapes. It was really time consuming since I had to re-‐fix it after putting it underneath the dryer for 30 minutes and then baking took a while. After baking, I had to kind of scrap the layer but not with the tip of the silver needle but on the sides of it. I also had to be careful when either re-‐fixing the pieces or scraping the layer off because if the charms/accessories were too thin or not stable enough, the pieces would break or part of it would come off. I also included epoxy resin, which is what the colored plastic parts of the earrings (forever21) that I bought were. I didn't really know what they were at first and how to use them, so I had to try it out by myself and in the end I got how to use it. There was one point where I got frustrated with it because I didn't know its bad for your skin so when I was washing the palette, I used my hand to scrap it off. Then my whole hand became sticky and I had to wash it underneath the water for like 15 minutes. For the epoxy resin, you have to mix the two liquids. One of them was used to harden the resin and the other one was just for the color of it. I like the color of blue and turquoise and I thought it would look nice with the silver so I bought those two mixtures. For this project: Since I started it when it was the beginning of the spring break, I wasn't really able to get advice from the teacher. However, before the spring break I did a presentation on my recent project (this one). I think it was good since I was able to actually understand more about my project and I think the feedback also made me consider what I should try and develop. For example, they gave me an advice on researching jewelry designers that actually made pieces with the art clay silver, rather than only research random jewelry designers. From this project, I think I am going to make an advertisement poster on this collection. I think I am going to do some photo shoots where someone wears it.
