7 OPENINg HYmN

“Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”

Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,

Pilgrim through this barren land.

I am weak, but thou art mighty;

Hold me with thy pow’rful hand.

Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore;

Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain,

Whence the healing stream doth flow;

Let the firey, cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey through.

Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield;

Strong Deliverer, be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,

Bid my anxious fears subside;

Death of death, and hell’s destruction,

Land me safe on Canaan’s side.

Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee;

Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.

Land me safe on Canaan’s side,

Bid my anxious fears goodbye…

Words: William Williams, 1745; alt. Jeremy Casella. Music: Jeremy Casella, 2002.

7 PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Enlighten, O our Lord and God, the movements of our meditations

to hear and understand Your life-giving and divine commands; and

grant unto us through Your grace and mercy to gather from them

the assurance of love, and hope, and salvation suitable to soul and

body, and we will sing to You everlasting glory without ceasing

and always, O Lord of all. Amen

7 SECOND HYmN

“Come thou Fount”

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise.

Teach me some melodious sonnet,

Sung by flaming tongues above.

Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,

Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer,

Hither by Thy help I’m come;

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,

Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wandering from the fold of God.

He, to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be!

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,

Bind my wandering heart to Thee:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,

Prone to leave the God I love;

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it;

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Words: Robert Robinson, 1758. Music: NETTLETON; Asahel Nettleton, 1825.

gOSPEL READINg

Matthew 27:32-46

As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name.

They compelled this man to carry his cross. 33And when they came

to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34they

offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it,

he would not drink it. 35And when they had crucified him, they

divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36Then they

sat down and kept watch over him there. 37And over his head they

put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of

the Jews.” 38Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the

right and one on the left. 39And those who passed by derided him,

wagging their heads 40and saying, “You who would destroy the

temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son

of God, come down from the cross.” 41So also the chief priests, with

the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42“He saved others; he

cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down

now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God;

let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the

Son of God.’” 44And the robbers who were crucified with him also

reviled him in the same way.

45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land

until the ninth hour. 46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out

with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, “My

God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

This is the gospel of the Lord.

Praise be to you, O Christ.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Pastor: We ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves

to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice

and envy, hated by others and hating one another.

Titus 3:3

ALL: If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins,

O Lord, who could stand?

But with you there is forgiveness;

therefore you are feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,

and in his word I put my hope.

My soul waits for the Lord

more than the watchmen wait for the morning,

more than the watchmen wait for the morning.

Almighty God, our Redeemer,

in our weakness we have failed

to be your messengers of forgiveness and hope.

Renew us by your Holy spirit,

that we may follow your commands

and proclaim your reign of love,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

7ASSURANCE OF PARDON Pastor: But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our

Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done

by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy,

by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy

Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus

Christ our Savior.

Titus 3:4-6

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and

remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of

life, and the grace and consolation of His Holy Spirit.

ALL: Amen.

7HYmN OF RESPONSE

“Oh the Deep, Deep Love”"

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus,

Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free!

Rolling as a mighty ocean

In its fullness over me!

Underneath me, all around me,

Is the current of Thy love—

Leading onward, leading homeward,

To Thy glorious rest above!

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus—

‘Tis a heav’n of heav’ns to me;

And it lifts me up to glory,

For it lifts me up to thee!

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus—

Spread His praise from shore to shore!

How He loveth, ever loveth,

Changeth never, nevermore!

Words: Samuel Trevor Francis, 1834-1925. Music: traditional Gaelic melody;

arr. by Audrey Assad.

7 PASSINg OF THE PEACE

Pastor: The peace of the LORD be with you.

People: And also with you.

Greet one another with words of peace and reconciliation such as

those above.

PREPARATION FOR COmmUNION

The “passing of the peace” precedes the Lord’s Supper as a liturgical reminder

of our unity as members of Christ’s body. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 implores us

to not let factions and divisions remain in our midst. Thus, the peace calls us

to move toward our brothers and sisters as Christ moves toward us.

All who are united in Christ Jesus by faith and are baptized, communing

members of His visible Church are invited to come to the Lord’s Table. If you

are not communing but would like to participate, come forward and fold

your hands, and you will receive a prayer of blessing from the server.

mINISTRY ANNOUNCEmENTS Visitors, please take a moment to fill out the attendance cards

located in the pew racks.

ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in

READINg FROm PSALmS

Psalm 22

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,

and by night, but I find no rest.

3Yet you are holy,

enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4In you our fathers trusted;

they trusted, and you delivered them. 5To you they cried and were rescued;

in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

6But I am a worm and not a man,

scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7All who see me mock me;

they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8“He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;

let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

9Yet you are he who took me from the womb;

you made me trust you at my mother's breasts. 10On you was I cast from my birth,

and from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11Be not far from me, for trouble is near,

and there is none to help.

12Many bulls encompass me;

strong bulls of Bashan surround me; 13they open wide their mouths at me,

like a ravening and roaring lion. 14I am poured out like water,

and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax;

it is melted within my breast; 15my strength is dried up like a potsherd,

and my tongue sticks to my jaws;

you lay me in the dust of death.

16For dogs encompass me;

a company of evildoers encircles me;

they have pierced my hands and feet— 17I can count all my bones—

they stare and gloat over me; 18they divide my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.

19But you, O Lord, do not be far off!

O you my help, come quickly to my aid! 20Deliver my soul from the sword,

my precious life from the power of the dog! 21Save me from the mouth of the lion!

You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!

22I will tell of your name to my brothers;

in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: 23You who fear the Lord, praise him!

All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,

and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! 24For he has not despised or abhorred

the affliction of the afflicted,

and he has not hidden his face from him,

but has heard, when he cried to him.

25From you comes my praise in the great congregation;

my vows I will perform before those who fear him. 26The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;

those who seek him shall praise the Lord!

May your hearts live forever!

27All the ends of the earth shall remember

and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

shall worship before you. 28For kingship belongs to the Lord,

and he rules over the nations.

29All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;

before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,

even the one who could not keep himself alive.

gOD WELCOmES US TO HIS TABLE

INVITATION

The Nicene Creed

All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven

and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance

with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary,

and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again,

according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven,

and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again,

with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;

whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life;

who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father

and the Son together is worshiped and glorified;

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

and I look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

from 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Mark 14:22-25

PRAYER OF HUmBLE ACCESS

ALL: We do not presume to come to this your Table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your

manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much

as to gather up the crumbs under your Table, but you

are the same Lord whose property is always to have

mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the

flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His

blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by His

body and our souls washed through His most precious

blood, that we may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us.

Amen.

CONSECRATION OF THE ELEmENTS

Celebrant: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon

us and upon these your gifts of bread and wine,

that the bread we break and the cup we bless

may be the communion of the body and blood

of Christ. By your Spirit make us one with Christ,

that we may be one with all who share this feast,

united in ministry in every place. As this bread

is Christ’s body for us, send us out to be the body

of Christ in the world.

HYmNS FOR THE EUCHARIST

“Hallelujah, What a Savior”

“Man of Sorrows!” what a name

For the Son of God, who came

Ruined sinners to reclaim:

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,

In my place condemned He stood,

Sealed my pardon with His blood:

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Guilty, vile, and helpless we;

Spotless Lamb of God was He,

Full atonement! Can it be?

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Lifted up was he to die;

“It is finished!” was His cry;

Now in heav’n exalted high:

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King,

All his ransomed home to bring,

Then anew this song we’ll sing:

Hallelujah, what a Savior!

Words and Music: Philip P. Bliss, 1875, alt.

“Go to Dark Gethsemane”

Go to dark Gethsemane,

You who feel the tempter’s pow’r;

Your Redeemer’s conflict see,

Watch with Him one bitter hour.

Turn not from His griefs away;

Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgment hall,

View the Lord of life arraigned;

O the worm-wood and the gall,

O the pangs His soul sustained.

Shun not suff’ring, shame, or loss,

Learn of Him to bear the cross.

Calv’ry’s mournful mountain climb;

There, adoring at His feet,

Mark the miracle of time,

God’s own sacrifice complete.

“It is finished!” hear the cry;

Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

Early hasten to the tomb

Where they laid his breathless clay;

All is solitude and gloom.

Who hath taken Him away?

Christ is ris’n! He meets our eyes;

Savior, teach us so to rise.

Words: James Montgomery, 1771-1854. Music: Richard Redhead, 1820-1901.
