My longhaired beauty, Xenna, is probablyshaking her head that it took so long, but the ways o humans are strange at

times and mysterious indeed to our canine com-panions, both past and present.

On April 23, and in recognition o its 15th yearo existence, LH-L tentatively dipped its toes intothe sea (or morass, depending o your viewpoint)o social media. Now we have 43 likes to our

credit. Granted, not much compared to the ol-lowings that Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber enjoy, but we are a dedicated and loyal lot who relish thephotos and contacts. urn to page 5 to seesome o our riends.

A ew GSD-related Facebook pages that Ihave come to enjoy and visit requently arealso depicted here.

While not having the striking color o its distantcousin, the red ox (Vulpes vulpes), in its own

ay, the tiny Blanords (V.cana) ox makes quite aatement. Its coat is so and thick and can vary romrusty brown to creamy white. And tiny it is indeed

n the ox world it is second only to the Fennec o theahara region in diminutive staturestanding about2 inches (30 cm) at the shoulder. Despite this, thelanords has remarkably large ears or its size (all theetter to dissipate heat), and a handsome, bushy tail asng as its body. Another distinctive characteristic is

he bands o black striping that run down each side os muzzle.

Te Blanords ox preers to make its homen rocky areas o the Middle East, and theood news or this tiny creature is that itsumbers are suciently abundant to make itspecies o least concern on the Internationalnion or Conservation o Nature and Natu-

ral Resources Red List. However, in Israel, it enjoysa special status and is ully protected by law with nohunting, trapping or trading permitted.

In other habitats this ox may go by a variety o

names: Aghan; Corsac; Hoary or Steppe, although, strangely, considering its range, no subspecies havebeen discovered. So, where does Blanord come intothe picture?

William . Blanord (18321905) was a Britishgeologist who worked extensively in India, Abyssiniaand Persia (now Iran) where he was not only able toadvance his knowledge o geologic ormations, butthe regional biota. Consequently, a number o othertaxa were named in his honor, including a bird and alizard.

My mom says this is an amusing movie, but Idont get it at all. It makes my head spin just

thinking about it, yet alone writing something thatmakes sense. She says she likes it because it pokes

un at the movie industry and all the crazy people itattracts. First o, I have problems with the title. Whois Shorty? Tis isnt explained and creates an enigmathat is never resolved, at least during the part o themovie when I was still awake.

Anyway, as best I can tell, heres what happens.Tis man (John ravolta) comes to Los Angeles tocollect on a gambling debt that is owed by a third-rate movie producer (Gene Hackman). Instead thiscollection man gets bitten by the movie bug big time;he thinks that he may have a natural talent or theproduction business as is not too ar removed romhis present career, which is terriying people until hegets what he wants. He is what is called a loan shark.

Important asideI should note here that thisisnt the kind o shark that swims in the ocean scar-ing surers and swimmers and eatured prominentlyin several other movies. Tis shark is a person wholends money but expects to be paid in ull, plus inter-est, otherwise bad, bad things will happen.

Teres much talk about money in a locker at the

airport, and then other money that is needed tomake a lm. Te producer man knows about a scriptthat could be made into a cool movie but he doesnthave the money to buy it. Well, he had the money (atleast some o it) as an investment rom yet anotherman or yet another movie, but this producer went toLas Vegas and gambled it away; he oolishly thoughthe could win enough to buy the script he wanted.

lPlotting and scheming is the name o the game in this movie. Whilemay seem like a casual meeting, you can bet your urry boots that each

olks have their own agenda. Well, i they didnt, it would just be anotreality show.

Now i you think this is conusing, wait a bMore and more characters are involved and tare more and more twists to the plot, but mothat this is all part o the movies appeal. By th

guess she means this movie and not the movis being made in the movie. See what I mean

Apart rom the starring roles, there are some appearances. From what I understand, these arewho are already pretty well known so are instanrecognizableat least in human circles. In Getsome o them even play themselves rather than one else, which is what is called acting, so I guesgot o lightly while still getting paid.

Our mom says the movie is based on a bookElmore Leonard and even tried to read some oit to me, but Ielt an over-whelmingneed oranother napaer the rstpage. However, theres noaccounting

or humantaste so,take Momsadvice andgive it andthe movie awhirl.

    State Dogs

There's state fowers and birds and, even in somecases, sh and butterfies, but what about our

canine riends? o date, only 11 o the U.S. 50 stateshave an ocial state dog,

Maryland was the rst to do this in 1964 with theChesapeake Bay Retriever. No big surprise there, as

that giant estuary is an important eature o the state.Other traditional selections were the Boston errieror Massachusetts, the American Fox Hound or Vir-ginia and the American Water Spaniel or Wisconsin. However, what is surprising is Pennsylvania namingthe Great Dane. Apparently, this dog was a avorite oWilliam Penn, the ounder o that commonwealth, asdepicted in a portrait hanging in the capitol building.

Recent ideas or state dogs have originated romyoung schoolchildren. New Hampshire elementarystudents nominated the Chinook, while a kindergart-ner in Alaska proposed another sled dog, the Mala-mute. Both o these choices were a enacted into law intheir respective states in 2009 and 2010.

Te remaining our states have gone a little urthero course or their selections. Louisiana chose theCatahoula Leopard Dog, exas the Blue Lacy, SouthCarolina the Boykin Spaniel and North Carolinathe Plott Hound; all o these dogs are considered

indigenous to their region and thereore appropriaterepresentatives.

Te gruelling canine rescue and recovery eorts a-ter the 9/11 terrorist attack sparked several proposalsto name the German Shepherd as New York state dog

In May 2012 , the New York State Assembly Com-mittee on Governmental Operations heard AssemblyBill 9655 that would bestow ocial state dog status onthe German Shepherd, but the bill was not advanced.Te sponsors oce has indicated that the bill mightbe reintroduced in 2013.
