VETERANS CORNER

Our commitment to our veterans remains strong. In May we contacted five Retirement/Care facilities to check on our veterans who may have needs during these trying times. We checked back with the VA Ivins Home to see if they had a wish list and found that indeed they did. We have been asked to supply Word Search and Crossword puzzle books and also two personal DVD players and five CD players to supplement what they currently have.

The Meadows requested both regular candy and sugar-free candies as well as Word Search books and puzzles.

We are adding a dozen decks of cards to each request. Shopping is completed and deliveries made by the end of May.

We will continue to contact homes in June to help our area homes that may have veterans in need.

The expenses for April and May are being covered by a generous donation to the Veterans Committee by the New Promise Lutheran Church of St George. This grant of $2000 was given to us to help local veterans and is a wonderful gift during these days when fundraising is not possible.

We need your help in staying in touch with our local veterans. If you know of a veteran or veteran’s family that needs help, please contact us so we can provide assistance.

As always, reach out to our Veterans with care and honor.

Dick Wilson, Veterans Committee Chairperson (435) 773-6974

Drug Awareness

We all know that education creates awareness . It is difficult to tell people what is unhealthy or dangerous to their health unless we understand . This article is about vaping.

What are E-Cigarettes? The U S Department of Health & Human Services says E-cigarettes are known by many different names. They are sometimes called “e-cigs”, “e-hookahs”, “mods”, “vape pens”, “tank systems”, and “electronic nicotine delivery systems.”

Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Some resemble pens, USB sticks and other everyday items.

E-cigarettes heat a liquid to produce an aerosol that usually contains nicotine (the addictive drug in tobacco products), flavorings, and other chemicals. Users inhale this aerosol into their lungs. Bystanders can also breathe in this aerosol when the user exhales into the air.

E-cigarettes can be used to deliver marijuana and other drugs. So now we know what they are, how are they being used?

A recent CDC study found that many adults are using e-cigarettes to stop smoking but the FDA does not approve of e-cigarettes as a quit smoking aid. Why? If e-cigarettes were used to replace tobacco products there may be a value as the consequences of tobacco products are more severe. But studies show people do not stop using tobacco, and long-term usage of e-cigarettes has its own dangers.

According to Brian King at the CDC, “Everyone, including older adults, should refrain from using all e-cigarettes and vape products.”

We don’t have enough long-term statistics to define the dangers of e-cigarettes, but we do know there are reports of severe breathing problems and deaths. Research is still being done on the particles that the additives leave in our system. “Anyone who vapes puts their lungs at risk,” says pathologist Maxwell Smith, coauthor of a recent Mayo Clinic study of lung damage.

Bottom line; smoking tobacco products and vaping can lower your immunity to respiratory infections. With the Coronavirus in our midst, attacking our lungs, do we want to lessen our ability to fight off infection?

If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you don’t vape, don’t start. If you use either, stop. We care about you and your loved ones. Education should be shared. Please share!

Evelyn Wilson, Member, Drug Awareness Program

Hello, Everyone! L.O.E. Message I can’t begin to tell you how much I have missed seeing all your faces these last few months. Like

most of you , we have stayed mostly at home, thinking of the “good old days” and wondering how our “new normal” will look. We have decided with precautions that we will begin living a little differently, but we will establish our own new normal.

That said, with the partial opening at our lodge, we may slowly move into a new phase of meeting and greeting old and new friends. For the present time, we will miss steak nights and fish nights, but know that sometime, hopefully in the near future, we will all enjoy them again with the necessary changes to adhere to health safety protocols.

On that same note, we are looking forward to resuming our meetings soon. Realizing that our fundraising events will have to change, please begin thinking of some new and creative ways that we can fundraise for our charitable projects. Remember to submit your recipes to Kaye Petersen, so that we can keep our cookbook project moving.

Stay, safe, sane and healthy until we can meet again!

Lynne Pappas, LOE President
