Sacramento Senator Tom Harman
of Huntington Beach today honored
Lance Corporal Mark Andrews, a
Purple Heart recipient on the SenateFloor for his service to our country. Lance
Corporal Andrews is from Los Alamitos.
It is an honor to have such an outstanding
young Marine come from our own
community and a privilege to thank him onthe Senate Floor for his service to our
country, said Harman.
Lance Corporal Andrews recently
received the Purple Heart medal for injuries
he sustained in Helmand
Province, Afghanistan while
conducing counter insurgency
operations as a United StatesMarine. He grew up in Los
Alamitos and graduated from
Brethren Christian High Schoolin Huntington Beach
Andrews joined the Marinesin 2009 after finishing his
studies at California State
University Long Beach. He is
stationed at Camp Pendleton inSan Diego County and
services with the 1st Radio
Battalion Unit.
For this age group...notunlike a reaction to aJustin Bieber appearance...
so was it given for Mr. Obama?With help from CongressmanDana Rohrabacher, the 8th gradestudents from Saint BonaventureCatholic School in HuntingtonBeach were in the right place atthe right time last month toglimpse President Obama as heboarded a helicopter for NewEngland. The students were
touring the nation's Capitol,followed by trips to Gettysburg,Lancaster, Philadelphia and NewYork City for their annual springtrip. Full of youthful enthusiasm,the HB kids cheer on thePresident. The President is theone in the dark suit with back tocamera. Is that Mayor DonHansen by the Gazebo? (GettyImages/Alex Wong. Used withpermission)
An unidentified creature wasdiscovered Wednesday by a womantaking her daily walk along theshore in Seal Beach.
Karen Summers says she animalcorpse didn't look like anything shehad ever witnessed.
She called officials from thePublic Works Department, who arrivedFriday morning and disposed of theunidentified animal.
Summers says the workers couldn'tidentify the remains either.
The discovery is reminiscent ofthe so-called "Montauk Monster,"an unidentified creature thatallegedly washed up on a beachnear the business district of
Montauk, New York in July 2008.

What the heck is going on in R.I?First a young lady acclaimedatheist (HS Sophomore) forces
my alma mater High Scholl to remove abanner from the school gym that my seniorclass donated to the school almost5-decades ago, Now, a group wants alocal fire department to demolish a warmemorial that has stood for almost 10 years!
Anybody ever hear of Roger Williams,no not the singer but the acclaimed founderof The State of Rhode Island andProvidence Plantations?
Roger Williams, founder of the colony ofRhode Island in America and pioneer ofreligious liberty, son of a merchant tailor,was born (probably) about 1604 in London.
Though headstrong, opinionated andrigid in his theological views, he wasuniformly tolerant, and he occupies a highplace amo ng tho se who have st riven forcomplete liberty of conscience. He was thefirst and the foremost exponent in Americaof the theory of the absolute freedom of th eindividual in matters of religion; and RhodeIsland, of which he was pre-eminently thefounder, was the first colony consistently toapply this principle in practice.
So, I ask myself...Self...what the heckhappened to all that tradition?
Now a cross is at the center of yetanother church and state controversy inRhode Island.
Earlier this year, Jessica Ahlquist,16, successfully sued to remove a schoolprayer banner from her high school inCranston, R. I.
Now, an atheist g roup called FreedomFrom Religion Foundation (FFRF) haswritten a letter to Leo Fontaine, mayor ofWoonsocket, R. I., stating that a cross inthe parking lot of the town's fire departmentis "unlawful" and requesting that thetown remove it.
According to the Daily Caller, the letteralso asked that a memorial angel andfirefighter's prayer be removed from the de-partment's website.
The offending monument was unveiledin 1921 in memory of William Jolicoeur, amember of the American ExpeditionaryForces who was killed in France duringWorld War I, the Woonsocket Call explains.The monument was later rededicated inMay 1952 to honor three brothers killed inWorld War II. The original monument was
dedicated by FrenchField Marshall Ferdinand Foch, SupremeCommander of the Allied Forces, who cameto Woonsocket at the end of World War 1.
The mayor is exploring the city's options,but says he has no intention of removingthe cross.
However, the cross could be relocated to
private pro perty if a lawsuit is mou nted.City Council President John Ward informedthe Woonsocket Call that the city is onthe verge of bankruptcy and cannotafford to get dragged into a costly legalbattle over a principle.
The controversy has prompted TomPoole, a disabled veteran, and BarbaraDardeen of Warwick to start a vigil at themonument. As WoonsocketPatch reports,the couple is hoping to stop any removal ofthe cross: "We'll both spend as much timeout here as we need to, to make sure thatthe monument stays put," Dardeen said.
God Bless America, oops..can I say that?Rhode Islanders -unite, stand up andfight...the heck with the Alamo...rememberRoger William or change the name of thePark in Cranston R. I. that bears his nameto something..."Area where Trees and grassgrow for no apparent reason" and throw the
baby out with the bath!I have a personal stake i this. I was born
in R. I., grew up in Oak Lawn Village (asuburb of Cranston), attended Oak LawnElementary School, Hugh B. Bain Jr. HS. Iwas part of the first graduation class of th enow famous Cranston HS West schoolWithout a Banner and was the firstgraduation class' President. Enough isenough...Rhode Islanders Unite Now! orwhat I'm calling it...RUN For The Cure. tosave some sanity for the rest of us. Comeon...I don't force my opinion on the Atheist-why in God's name should they inflict theiropinion me? Dear Lord, grant us a Judgewith the wisdom, intelligence and characterto grant us all the equal right to Freedom ofSpeech and expression and allow theAtheist the same size plot of land to displaytheir symbol of dis-belief.
Can you imagine a world without hope?Can anyone image a world with at least 1basic commandments? Consider, yourhonor, for a moment. ..Thou shall steal,Thou shall murder, etc; and there wherewould be all be? I rest my case.
From the mid-1980s to 2005,Californias population
grew by 10 million, while Medicaid recipients soared
by 7 million; tax lers paying income taxes roseby just 150,000; and the prison population
swelled by 115,000.
This is unbelievable. Where d o you suppose
these pe ople (the non tax payers) came from? Th e
older I get the harder I work...
I justread a
newscolumnthat
stated:
I would gain control of the most powerfulnation in the world;
I would delude their minds into thinkingthat they had come from man's effort, insteadof God's blessings;
I would promote an attitude of lovingthings and using people, instead of theother way around;
I would dupe entire states into relying ongambling for their state revenue;
I would convince people that character isnot an issue when it comes to leadership;
I would make it legal to take the lifeof unborn babies;
I would make it socially acceptable to takeone's own life, and invent machines tomake it convenient;
I would cheapen human life as much aspossible so that life of animals are valuedmore than human beings;
I would take God out of the schools,where even the mention of His name wasgrounds for a lawsuit;
I would come up with drugs that sedate themind and target the young, and I wouldget sports heroes to advertise them;
I would get control of the media, so thatevery night I could pollute the minds of everyfamily member for my agenda;
I would attack then family, the backbone ofany nation. I would make divorce acceptableand easy, even fashionable. If the familycrumbles, so does the nation;
I would compelpeople to expresstheir most depravedfantasies on canvasand movies screens,and I would callit art;
I would convince theworld that people areborn homosexuals, andthat their lifestyles shouldbe accepted and marveled;
I would convince thepeople that right and wrongare determined by a few whocall themselves authoritiesand refer to their agendas aspolitically correct;
I would persuade peoplethat the church is irrelevantand out of date, the Bible isfor the naive:
I would dull the minds of Christians, andmake them believe that prayer is notimportant, and that faithfulness andobedience are optional;
I GUESS I WOULD LEAVE THINGSPRETTY MUCH THE WAY THEY ARE!

KTLA TV Weekend Morning
News Anchor Chris Burrousrecently made an appearance at
The Cake Box Pastry Shop (6054Warner Avenue in Huntington Beach).He came because I Invited him to do a"Burrous Bites" Segment, which isbroadcast twice during his popularshow, every Sundaymorning. This was thefirst time Chrispopped in on a pastryshop. The journalistusually visits unusual,local Southern Califor-nia restaurants thatviewers have toldhim about. He alwaysmeets the person inside, whorecommended the quaint business, andthey eat and critique the fabulous food.
While at the humble bakery, he realizedMaster Pastry Chef Paul Gauweiler, 75,not only bakes deserts for Disneyland'slegendary Club 33 but was creatingscrumptious items for contestants andjudges at the famous American Idol TVshow. Paul is known internationally forhis 80-year-old, German-made,gas-flamed Baumkuchen (tree cake)machine, one of only three in the United
States. The three foot long tree cakes,
used in presidential parties, royalreceptions, weddings and birthdays, arein much demand but he's the only onebaking them west of the MississippiRiver. Chris was fascinated by the 18layers and different tastes inside thedelicious delicacy that comes in glazed,fondant and chocolate flavors. In his
shop, Paul often sellsdifferent portions ofthe cake or smallerbite size schmitzen.Chris and I thought thetree cake was one ofthe tastiest desertswe've ever tried.Yum! You can orderthem at his business
or online at cakeboxpastries.com.(714-842-9132) You'll see whydelightful, hard-working, impish-humoredPaul is the toast of the coast. His treecakes have been featured on JapaneseTV as well as in The New YorkerMagazine. Here is a link to the fun seg-ment that ran on KTLA.http://www.ktla.com/videogallery/69402075/News/VIDEO-Burrous-Bites-The-Cake-Box-in-Huntington-Beach .This gives you and idea on whythis place is special to me and my
family.Bon apetit!
After a year ofnot beingable to use
the 7th Street Bridge,where it connectswith the 405 Freeway,people were delightedto see that the rebuiltbridge recently re-
opened and is betterthan ever. It takespeople from SealBeach into LongBeach and also is themain thoroughfarefor the VA MedicalCenter Campus and California StateUniversity, Long Beach. Thousands ofpeople who use those facilities wereimpacted by the construction projectand had to use alternate routes, whichadded 10 to 20 minutes or more totheir commutes. My friend Greg Kelleyfrom Mission Viejo uses the 7th StreetBridge when he travels to Long Beachand is thrilled to have it back again."It's definitely a blessing," said theStewart Title executive.
The $277 million WestCounty Connectors Proj-ect improves the trafficflow by directly connectingcarpool lanes on theI-405, San Gabriel RiverFreeway (I-605) andGarden Grove Freeway(SR-22). In addition, the
project adds a six milecarpool lane on the I-405between SR22 and I-605.For complete info on theproject, check outhttp://www.octa.net/wcc.
"We know this has beenan inconvenience and I want tosincerely thank the community forenduring this closure the past year,"said OCTA Chairman Paul Glaab,the mayor of Laguna Niguel. "Thisproject is a critical component inreducing congestion."
A special ceremony before the bridgeofficially reopened was attended byOrange County Second District Super-visor John Moorlach, Seal BeachMayor Mike Levitt, Seal BeachAssistant City Manager/Public WorksDirector Sean Crumby, Long BeachThird District City Councilman GaryDeLong, Orange County SupervisorBill Campbell and members of theOCTA (Orange County TransportationAuthority) and Caltrans.

"I walked down the street in Barcelona andsuddenly discovered a terrible truth - Europedied in Auschwitz. We killed six million
Jews and replaced them with 20 millionMuslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture,thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed thechosen people, truly chosen, because theyproduced great and wonderful people whochanged the world.
The contribution of this people is felt in allareas of life: science, art, international trade,and above all, as the conscience of the world.These are the people we burned.
And under the pretense of tolerance andbecause we wanted to prove to ourselves thatwe were cured of the disease of racism, weopened our gates to 20 million Muslims,who brought us stupidity and ignorance,religious extremism and lack of tolerance,crime and poverty, due to an unwillingnessto work and support their families with pride.
They have blown up our trains and turnedour beautiful Spanish cities into the thirdworld, drowning in filth and crime. Shut upin the apartments they receive free from thegovernment, they plan the murder anddestruction of their naive hosts.
And thus in our misery we have exchangedculture for fanatical hatred, creative skillfor destructive skill, intelligence forbackwardness and superstition.
We have exchanged the pursuit of peace ofthe Jews of Europe and their talent for abetter future for their children, theirdetermined clinging to life because life is
holy, for those who pursue death, for peopleconsumed by the desire for death for them-selves and others, for our children and theirs.
What a terrible mistake was made bymiserable Europe.
A lot of Americans have become soinsulated from reality that they imagineAmerica can suffer defeat without anyinconvenience to themselves.
Recently, the UK debated whether toremove The Holocaust from its schoolcurriculum because it 'offends' the Muslimpopulation, which claims it never occurred.It is not removed as yet. However, this isa frightening portent of the fear that is grip-ping the world and how easily each countryis giving in to it.
It is now more than 60 years after theSecond World War in Europe ended. Thise-mail is being sent as a memorial chain inmemory of the 6 million Jews, 20 millionRussians, 10 million Christians, and 1,900Catholic priests who were 'murdered, raped,burned, starved, beaten, experimented onand humiliated.' Now, more than ever, withIran among others claiming the Holocaust tobe 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure theworld never forgets."
How many years will it be before theattack on the World Trade Center 'NEVERHAPPENED' because it offends someMuslim in the United States?

Be polite
It may be a routine traffic stop to you, but thecop doesn't know how dangerous the situationmight be. So, when he pulls you over, keep in
mind that he's looking at it as a tense situation.If you're rude, you'll only make it worse andlessen your chances of escaping the ticket. Be
polite; roll down your window and turn offyour radio. If you smoke, put out the cigarette.All of these things are common courtesy andthey all communicate something to the officer:You care enough to give him your undividedattention. Talking on your cell phone orinsisting that he hurry up is a s urefire way to landyourself a ticket.
Don't talk too much
The more you talk, the more he can use againstyou in court. That doesn't mean you have to be amute, but sometimes cops will let you thinkyou're talking your way out of it when they'rereally just giving you enough rope to hang your-self. Don't let yourself get into a conversation inwhich you confess to breaking the law so that youmay get off with a warning. Once the patrolmanhas a confession, he or she has what's needed to
beat you in court should you contest the ticket.
Don't argue or plead ignorance
The side of the road is no place to argue.Sometimes a cop might try to bait you into anargument (they're human and we all have baddays). But, usually, an argument can be a voided.If you can't get the officer to see things yourway by calmly and clearly stating your case,
don't keep going. If you do, you will onlyantagonize him.
As for ignorance, think again. It might work ifyou're a cute girl, but for most guys, it's just alame excuse. When you get your license, youagree to abide by the rules of the road, so igno-rance just isn't going to fly. Plus, it's a commonexcuse, which means cops hear it all the time andare less likely to let you off with just a warning.
Ask for a warning
It never hurts to askfor a warning. Butdon't beg that's a
sign of weakness.It's also veryannoying. Whenan officer givesyou a warning, he'sdoing you a favor,so try to approachasking for a warningthe same way youmight ask a friend tohelp you move. It's a bigfavor on his part, and you've got tomake him want to help you.
In CourtPresent a strong case
Presenting a strong case is about knowing thelaw. While it will help to review the relevant
portion of the driver's handbook, the judgedoesn't need you to tell him about the law; trustme, he knows it. Instead, focus on makingyourself an effective advocate: Be organized,
be on time, speak clearly and dress appropriately.All of these things will set you apart from mostof the people the judge sees every day, and he'll
be more inclined to r ule in your favor if yo umake his job easier.
Accept a plea
If you're looking at multiple charges, ask toplead guilty to the lesser charge in exchange for
dismissing the others. You can do this before yourproceeding begins. Often, judges will do this tosave time. The benefit to you is that you can savemoney and points against your insurance. Butremember: The plea bargain only benefits youwhen you're facing many charges.
Use an attorney
If you're facing serious charges that may resultin you losing your license, getting heavy fines or
jail time, it's worth bringing a lawyer. That shouldgo without saying, but a lot people think they canfly solo because it's traffic court. Wrong: Whenyour license and your freedom are on the line,you need a lawyer. Ask a friend or consultonline listings and reviews to find a lawyer whospecializes in traffic offenses.
Request a trial by mail
Most jurisdictions let you make your case bymail. The advantages are twofold: First, you cansit down and think out your case without the
pressure of being on the spot and facing thearresting officer and the judge. Second, if youlose, you can request a trial in person, whichmeans you get a second bite at the apple.
Getting ticketedIf there is a common denominator to these tips,
it's that you need to know how to handle yourselfin a difficult situation. While many know how tohandle a tough day at work or a fight with theirspouses, an encounter with the law can be a bitscary. The best advice is to relax and fall back onwhat you've learned.

The Huntington Beach Police Department online citizen police reportsystem allows a person to submit a report for certain minor crimes. It alsoallows that person to print a copy of the police report for free. This providesa great convenience for most since it can be done rather quickly with notime delays. However, not all reports can be filed online. The policedepartment website gives detailed information on what the requirements arefor filing a report online.
In 2011 citizens used the online crime reportingsystem over 900 times to file minor r eports foroffenses such as lost prop-erty, petty theft, harassingtelephone calls and vandalism.For more information on howto use the system visit the po-lice department web page atwww.hbpd.org and link to

Dear EarthTalk:
Why isGreenpeace upset
with some leadingtech companies for so-called
dirty cloud computing? Can you explain?~Jeremy Wilkens, Waco, TX
Leading tech companies like Google, Appleand Microsoft are now offering unprecedentedamounts of data storage and access to apps onhuge Internet-connected servers, savingconsumers and businesses the hass le of installingand running programs and storing information ontheir own local computers.
This emerging trend,dubbed cloud comput-ing, means that these
providers have had toscale up their power
consumption considerably,as they are increasinglyresponsible for providingmore and more of thecomputing horsepowerrequired by the worldstwo billion Internet users.
No doubt, sharing such resources on centralizedservers is more efficient than every individualand business running their own versionsseparately. In fact, the research firm Verdantixestimates that companies off-loading data andservices to cloud servers could save $12 billionoff their energy bills and reduce greenhouse gasemissions by 85 million metric tons within thenext decade. But for the greenhouse gas savingsto be realized, the companies offering cloud
computing services need to make the rightenergy choices.
Greenpeace has been tracking sustainabilityamong tech companies for over a decade, andrecently released a report, How Green is YourCloud? assessing the green footprint of themove to cloud computing. According to theanalysis, some of the major players (Google,Facebook and Yahoo) have gone to great lengthsto ensure that significant amounts of the powerthey need come from clean, green sources likewind and solar. But Greenpeace chastises others(Apple, Amazon and Microsoft) for relying onso-called dirtier sources of power, such as coal
and nuclear, to run theirhuge data centers.
When people aroundthe world share theirmusic or photos on the
cloud, they want toknow that the cloud ispowered by clean, safeenergy, says GaryCook, a Senior PolicyAnalyst with Green-
peace. Yet highlyinnovative and profitable companies like Apple,Amazon and Microsoft are building data centers
powered by coal and acting like their customerswont know or won't care. Theyre wrong.
Greenpeaces report evaluates 14 major techfirms and the electricity supply chains in useacross more than 80 different data centers that
power cloud-based services. Some of the largestdata centers are in buildings so big they arevisible from space and use as much power as250,000 European homes. If the cloud were its
own country, says Greenpeace, it would rank 5thin the world in electricity consumption.
Companies like Google, Yahoo and Facebookare beginning to lead the sector down a cleanenergy pathway through innovations in energyefficiency, prioritizing renewable energy accesswhen siting their data centers, and demanding
better energy options from utilities andgovernment decision-makers, reports Greenpeace.But unfortunately the majority of the industry isnot marching in step. As such, Greenpeace iscalling on all tech companies with cloud servicesto develop siting policies based on access to cleanenergy sources, invest in or directly purchaserenewable energy, be transparent about theirenergy usage, share innovative solutions so thesector as a whole can improve, and demand thatgovernments and utilities increase the percentageof clean, green power available on the grid.

Honda has used the 2012 BeijingMotor Show to launch twonew concept cars that it says
"show the direction of mass-productionmodels Honda will introduce to themarket next year."
First up is the imaginativelynamed Concept C. According to theautomaker, 'C' stands for "Cool,"Challenge" and "China." As much aswe wish we were making that up, wearen't. The car itself, though, lookspretty bold, with striking character linesdown each side and a fascia that wouldlook right at home on the nextBattlestar Gallactica spinoff. We'recurious to see how much of the C'sconceptual styling makes it into pro-duction when a mass-market version
hits the Chinese market in 2013 if itwere toned down just a bit, we thinkHonda could do worse than inject some
of this boldness inits American lineup, though
some might suggest the grille hasovertones of the controversial stylingdecisions seen at Acura.
Moving along, we have the ConceptS, which supposedly stands for"Stylish," "Smart" and "Surprise." Likethe Concept C, Honda says Concept Swill spawn a production model that willdebut in China in 2013, with globalsales following thereafter. Honda isn'tsaying exactly what is powering the Sother than mentioning it's a hybrid.

The product planning for thismodel was led by Honda's Chineseassociates and the development wasdone through cooperation betweendevelopment teams in China and Japan.Honda is planning to introduce amass-production model based onthis Concept C next year throughGuangqi Honda AutomobileCo., Ltd.
Concept S
Concept S is
a global concept model of a new-valuepassenger mover that was developedprimarily for the Chinese market andwill go on sale first in China. The "S"stands for "Stylish," "Smart" and"Surprise." Adopting a hybrid power-train, this concept model realizes boththe "fun of driving" and excellentenvironmental performance at the sametime. A spacious cabin was realized byHonda's packaging technologies, whichis one of the distinctive strengths ofHonda. A mass-production modelbased on this C oncept S is scheduledfor introduction to the Chinese marketthrough Dongfeng Honda AutomobileCo., Ltd. next year, followed by aglobal release.

away with the honor of being named themost beautiful concept at the 2012 GenevaMotor Show. The design house decided tocommemorate the honor by crafting somethingelse special for the 2012 Milan Furniture Show.
Pininfarina turned to the craftsmen at Riva1920 to put together a wood sculpture in theCambiano's image. The piece is hewn fromreclaimed Venice briccola wood the same stuff
that makes up all those mooring poles in thefamous Italian city.
The 36-foot beams each carry uniquemarkings, both from the lagoon waterand the aquatic organisms thatcall the posts home. The resultis a sculpture with many uniquecolors and markings.

Sydney family wins court caseagainst KFC
The family girl who allegedlygot salmonella and became braindamaged after eating KFC haswon legal action.
FAST food giant KFC hasbeen told to pay $ 8 million tothe parents of a girl who sayshe was left paralysed and
brain damaged after eating a
chicken Twister.Monika Samaan, then aged 7, became seriously ill with salmonella
poisoning after eating at theVillawood KFC in 2005.
Last Friday her family won theircompensation bid against KFC inthe New South Wales SupremeCourt and today Justice StephenRothman ordered KFC to pay $8million plus legal costs.
KFC denied it was responsiblefor the poisoning and says it willappeal the decision.
In a statement the restaurantsaid the case was clearly tragic
but they were "deeplydisappointed and surprised" byJudge Rothman's decision.
"We believe the evidenceshowed KFC did not cause thistragedy and, after reviewing thejudgment a nd seek ing furth eradvice from our lawyers, wehave decided to appeal JusticeRothman's decision," KFC
Australia's chief corporate affairs officer Sally Glover said.
Hilary Tuttle of the HuffingtonPost squeezed this story out thisweek..."Are worse ways to die? I...would not want to think aboutthem, especially if you're a guy.
Tuttle says a Chinese mandied recently when a womansqueezed his testicles causing himto collapse over a fight over a
parking space.
A 41-year-old woman inChina's Haiku City in theHainan Province droveto town on a scooterto pick her child up
from school. She,reportedly tried topark in a space,but the storeowner, the 42-year-old victim,stopped her... China
News 24 reported.
A fight resulted.The woman thencalled her husbandand brother, they thengot into a more violentfist fight with the
shopkeeper, according to reports.At that point...the woman grabbedthe man's testicles and squeezedthem until he collapsed. He wastaken to a hospital for treatmentand later died.
Parking disputes can get ugly. InLouisiana recently resident,Shawntay Brown, 19, was arrestedfor biting a 15-year-old's breast
during a brawl in Monroe.Go figure. An affidavit inthe case included apolice officer's state-
ment that the 15 yearold "showed me thebite mark."
Of course a videowas introduced
showing Brownrunning after theyounger girl and
biting her on atender spot,accord-
ing to the SmokingGun reported."
Wow, I think I'll takethe bus for a while...

The April jobs report released
by the Labor Department wasmore than a disappointment.
The numbers in the report indicatea slowdown in what has already
been a very week and debatableeconomic recovery.
Only 115,000 jobs were creatednationwide during the month ofApril. This was below the consensusexpectations of 165,000 new
positions. Whatsworse, its even lessthan the 125,000 jobs thatare required every month justto keep up with populationgrowth in our country.
Some politicians, especially
those vying for reelection,have pointed to what theyrecalling the silver liningin the report: Theunemploymentrate ticked
down to 8.1% from 8.2% in March.And while this data could easily beused to sway headlines, the reason
behind the drop is due to areduction in the labor force. InApril, 342,000 Americans gave uplooking for work and effectivelyremoved themselves from the laborforce. It is this larger number ofdisenchanted workers and not thesmaller number of new jobs that
accounted for the dipin unemploy-
ment. But,thats part of
the complex algorithmbehind the officialunemployment figuresreleased by the
Labor Department.
Official unemploy-ment figures are
controver-sial at
best. A more realistic picture of thestate of the labor market might be
best obtained by looking at thelabor force participation rate. Amuch simpler equation than whatsused to calculate unemployment,the participation rate simplycompares the number of peopleable to work against the number of
people actually working. As of thismonth, that figure stands at 63.6%.With less than 2/3 of eligibleAmericans actually working, thisrepresents the lowest participationrate since 1981.
This is a major contributor toWashingtons ongoing budget
problems. A smaller labor forcemeans lower income taxes ourgovernments prime source ofrevenue. To add further fuel to thedebt crisis is that most of theremaining 36.4% of eligibleAmericans who are not currently
putting in to the system ar e likelytaking a draw
from it, eitherthrough unem-
ployment or someo th er f or m o f
government com-pensation. Theeffect is a double
whammy to ourfederal budget, and
one thatis clearlynot sus-tainable.
T h i snegativeeconomicoutlook,once re-leased, created an immediate selloffon Wall Street. And, as usual,whats bad news for stock is goodnews for mortgage bonds as globalinvestors seek the security of US
bonds. This safe haven play haspropelled mortgage rates backdown to within a fraction of theall-time record low. For those whostill have a job and feel like theymissed out on the record low ratesfrom last year, the only silverlining in this labor report is thatthose record low rates are back.
