Hot August Nights! Summer concert series and outdoor music festivals are raging this month. Whether it’s “the next best thing” or the “real thing,” lots of local music will heat up South County stages.

Music Under the Stars at the Mission San Juan Capistrano features several familiar-sounding groups in the picturesque courtyard. Do a double-take watching the popular Neil Diamond and Santana tribute bands under the lights. Parrot Heads can enjoy a sunset concert performance by a Jimmy Buffet tribute group at San Clemente’s pier. As a huge fan of “The Boss,” a must-see Springsteen tribute takes place at Dana Point’s Summer Concerts in the Park. Bob Seger and The Platters will also be represented during the series. Laguna Beach offers pseudo-celebrity performances, including ones by INXS and Eagles tribute bands, on Sundays at Bluebird Park.

If you’re looking for live performances by some of your favorite artists, venture over to the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano and catch the Doobie Brothers’ Michael McDonald, Lisa Loeb, Great White and Berlin. Check out our interview with Lisa Loeb and the centerfold calendar of events for more information.

We are pleased to feature the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach on this month’s cover. Take time to visit this interactive art experience where you’ll find beautiful works, live entertainment and family fun. The event runs daily through August 29th.

The Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach has successfully kicked off its 44th annual season, open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through August 29th.

Over 200 Laguna Beach artists, including 22 first-timers, excitedly celebrate a fresh summer season of creating, exhibiting and selling unique artwork - all in the pictur-esque setting of a cool eucalyptus grove. A wide variety of art me-dia, including glass, wood, jewelry, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, mixed media and more are represented at the show. On the festival grounds, you will also find live entertainment on three stages, four outdoor restaurant ca-fés with a variety of menu offerings, the Sawdust Saloon, the Sawdust souvenir shop, interactive art class-es and demonstrations, and the fa-mous glass-blowing booth.

The Sawdust Art Festival strives to be different from other art shows,

visualizing itself as an artists’ “hap-pening” rather than a stuffy ex-hibit. The artists themselves build a unique village of individual booths from the ground up each summer. The architectural designs are as var-ied and interesting as the work they showcase. Once the booths are fin-ished, the sawdust goes down, the landscaping goes in, music fills the air and once again the Sawdust Art Festival magically returns for anoth-er season. It is truly a unique experi-ence in the arts that brings visitors back year after year.

New to the Festival is the “Original Collectors’ Panels” fundraiser in support of the Sawdust Art Edu-cation Fund. Over 70 impressively decorated 12” x 30” x 2” panels cre-ated by Sawdust artists are on dis-play around the Festival and in art-ist booths. The panels are available for bid during the run of show and a final live auction will take place on Sunday, August 22nd from 3-5 p.m. on the Main Entertainment Deck. Proceeds benefit the Sawdust Art Education Fund and the “Original Collectors’ Panels” can be pur-chased as tax-deductible donations.

The Sawdust Art Festival has part-nered with American Honda as the title sponsor for the 2010 show.

Two Honda hybrid vehicles are on display, one of which (a 2011 Honda CR-Z) will be raffled off with pro-ceeds benefitting the Sawdust Art Festival’s education programs. Raf-fle tickets are sold daily during the show season for $5 per ticket or 5 tickets for $20.

Sawdust artists have lent their cre-ative talents to the car displays. Acrylic painter and muralist, Doug Miller, painted a scenic forest mural and Ryan Gourley, acrylic painter and mixed-media artist, painted a vintage Woody design over the white vinyl-wrapped 2010 Honda Insight. The winner of the 2011 Hon-da CR-Z will be announced at the official raffle drawing on Sunday, August 29th at 4 p.m. on the Main Entertainment Deck.

Don’t miss the diversity in character, creativity and action at the Sawdust! For more information and a com-plete calendar of events, please visit www.sawdustartfestival.org or call 949.494.3030.

Question: What is the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion? —monique, san Juan capistrano

ross meDical: Heat Stroke is a life-threatening medical condition where a persons cooling system is impaired, and the internal body temp may rise to 105° F or greater. It is more common in infants, the elderly, and persons with chronic illness, as well as those taking antihistamines, or medications for depression or blood pressure. Symptoms include confusion, dizziness, hallucinations or unconsciousness, flushed, hot, dry skin and rapid breathing. Treatment involves calling 911 immediately. Pre-hospital treatment can include immersion in cool bath water and cool liquids by mouth if they are conscious.

Heat Exhaustion is a milder form but can be just as serious. It usually occurs in younger persons and athletes exercising in hot weather, or humid weather which impairs the cooling action of sweat. Symptoms include muscle cramps, dizziness, headache and nausea with rapid heart rate. Immediate treatment includes cool fluids such as sport drinks and water, shade, application of cool water to skin, and avoiding beverages that contain caffeine.

For safe, summer fun, it is important to stay well-hydrated no matter what your age or medical condition. —Karl gebhard, m.D.

Question: I have 3 children and need physicals for preschool, kindergarten and college. You offer free sports physicals, but what about school physicals?—tina, san clemente

ross meDical: YES! It’s back to school time and we at Ross Medical Associates understand this time of year can get expensive. We have expanded our free physical offer to include all youth physicals, including those young adults going to college. If your children need immunizations and/or laboratory tests, we can offer a cash discount or bill your insurance (we accept most PPOs and HMO thru Monarch HealthCare). Our doctors are available every day by appointment or walk-in and can provide primary care physician services as well as urgent care. You and your family’s health and wellness is important to us and we hope you choose Ross Medical Associates as your medical home. EYESGrammy-nominated singer/songwriter and new mom Lisa Loeb performs at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Sunday, August 8th. She will be joined by Sara Haze and Alice Wallace.

Loeb’s career was launched with the platinum-selling, No. 1 hit song “Stay (I Missed You)” from the film Reality Bites and she’s parlayed that early success into a multi-dimensional career encompassing music, film, television, voice-over work and children’s recordings. Her acclaimed studio releases include the Gold-selling Tails and its follow-up, the Grammy-nominated and Gold-selling Firecracker. Touching a larger audience, Lisa has also recorded two award-winning children’s CDs: Catch the Moon, with noted children’s musical artist Elizabeth Mitchell, and Camp Lisa. Loeb has also starred in and produced two TV series, “Dweezil and Lisa,” for the Food Network and “#1 Single,” a dating show on the E! Network.

A strong believer in the importance of helping others, Lisa created the Camp Lisa Foundation which raises money to send children, who otherwise would not have the opportunity, to summer camp. Loeb shares, “I believe music should be a part of young people’s lives. The arts experience should move away from trying to be a famous celebrity or trying to just make money.”

Continuing to bring her artistic creations to new audiences, Loeb is currently working on Camp Kappawanna, a children’s musical inspired by her CD Camp Lisa. The production debuts this summer in Miami. Loeb also brings her celebrated sense of style to the world of designer eyewear, with the Lisa Loeb Eyewear line launching this fall. For more information, visit www.lisaloeb.com.

Loeb is looking forward to the Coach House show. “It’s been maybe ten years since I’ve played there and I love interacting with the audience. I think

all ages will enjoy the show. With a seven month old, I can now relate better to parents, who go through a

whole different set of life experiences.”

I thought I knew Italian cuisine until I had the opportunity to experience Casanova Ristorante in Dana Point. Not since my trip to venice and Florence have I enjoyed such authentic, fresh Italian cooking in such a warm and friendly atmosphere.

I selected a tasty Cabernet Sauvignon from their carefully edited wine list that proved to be the perfect pairing for my main course. My friend opted for the sig-nature “Casanova” martini - a refreshing, not-too-tart, not-too-sweet cocktail.

We started with the Calamari Dorati and accepted our server’s recommendation of the popular Melanzane alla Parmigiana - an appetizer-sized portion of eggplant par-mesan. The calamari was accompanied by a zesty marinara and had a light and crispy texture. The eggplant was delicious and it’s easy to understand why it’s become a favorite among Casanova diners.

My entrée was the Gnocchi Sorrentina; a great example of how a few simple in-gredients can come together harmoniously. The dumplings were small and ten-der with just the right sprinkling of mozzarella, sweet tomatoes and fresh basil.

My friend ordered the chef’s choice—the Pesce Giorno or fish of the day. The selection was Chilean sea bass served with steamed spinach and herbed roasted potatoes. The fish was melt-in-your-mouth tender, complimented by a layer of fresh herbs and juicy chopped tomatoes - simply sublime.

For dessert, we sampled the crème brûlée and house-made cannoli. The crème brûlée was creamy with a delicate, caramelized sugar crust. After a few heavenly spoonfuls, however, I couldn’t help but be distracted by the elaborate presentation of the cannoli.

I will preface my next comments with a little back story. I love a good can-noli; I might even love a bad cannoli. I’ve walked 30 blocks in Manhattan and waited an hour at the famed veniero’s for a cannoli. It turns out; I didn’t have to. Casanova makes the best cannoli I’ve ever tasted. The filling was thick and smooth and the shell was flaky and crunchy. Be certain to save room for this emotional experience on your next visit.

Adjacent to the restaurant is Casanova’s cocktail lounge. Featuring a Monday through Friday Happy Hour at the bar top from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., you can relax with a drink while catching your favorite sporting event or Tv show.

Holy Cannoli!
