In our daily board, students will review the calendar, counting 1-60 (frontwards and backwards), clock, money, seasons of the year, and tally marks. From now on, students will have a decodable spelling assessment at the end of the week. Several students are already reading decodable phonics books and library books and are taking AR tests. In social studies, we are learning about responsibilities, characteristics of being a good citizen, and school environments from the past. We will continue to post our work outside, so we are inviting parents to come view the students’ progress. Go Bulldogs!!

History of Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week honors the life of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena,

who was killed by drug dealers in 1985. Kiki was working undercover to eradicate our

communities of drugs and those who profit from them. The family and friends of Kiki wore

red ribbons after their loss, and hence Red Ribbon Week was named.

Our school is thrilled to be participating in Red Ribbon Week activities that will not only

enhance school spirit but also bring awareness to the issue of drugs and their negative impact.

Our Theme this year is: These Paws Don’t Touch Drugs!!!

Activities for the Week of October 27th – 31st:

Monday: Be Proud To Be Drug Free Day - Students are encouraged to wear RED clothing and accessories while still following school dress code. Also, each

student will receive a red ribbon to wear all week. A discussion will be held in

each class on the importance of being drug free. Tuesday: Sock It To Drugs Day– Students will be encouraged to wear their craziest, favorite, or RED socks to affirm their strength of character and commitment to be strong in their stand in uniting with their friends, family, community, and school against harmful drugs. Each student will receive a bracelet to wear and support that “These Paws Don’t Touch Drugs!” Wednesday: We Got SMART Goals Day– Students will be encouraged to wear their favorite college or team shirt/jersey to affirm their preparation to be college ready. Each student will receive a red ribbon button to wear and declare that “These Paws Don’t Touch Drugs!”

Thursday: Our Future Is Too Bright Day – Students will be encouraged to wear sunglasses, bright color socks, or light-up shoes to affirm that drugs have no place in their future. Shades should not be worn during instruction. Each student

will receive a red ribbon pencil and eraser top that asserts that “These Paws Don’t Touch Drugs!”

Friday: Be a HERO and say “KAPOW” to Drugs – Students will be encouraged to wear their favorite superhero shirt to affirm our pledge to live a drug free life. Each student will receive a red ribbon lollipop

to enjoy and proclaim that “These Paws Don’t Touch Drugs!” More Red Ribbon Week activities to be announced in upcoming newsletters.
