2 The Litter Box June 2017

As many of you know, my mother passed away in May and I’ve been touched by the show of support and concern I’ve received from club members that included cards, letters, house plants and a beautiful gift basket. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated beyond measure. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. In late April, I met with CJC member, Richard Lloyd-Roberts, to discuss expanding the club’s social media reach to include Twitter and Instagram. The club’s Facebook page has reached an impressive number of page ‘likes’ – over 500 since its start in August 2012. Richard began talking about integrating the three social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram), upgrading and enhancing the club’s website. As I listened, it became apparent that the club needed a more experienced person at the social media helm than my skills offer. In short, I was obsolete. Richard graciously accepted my offer to take over as social media director for the club. Since then, Richard has been busy integrating, upgrading and enhancing the club’s exposure on social media. He had a tremendous number of people following the day-by-day exploits of an E-type on a Route 66 road trip – which came to an unfortunate end recently. It’s been exciting to see what Richard posts and the responses he’s getting. Jerry Ellison, chair of the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) Nominating Committee, reminded me by email that the Regional Director nominations are now open for the six regions of JCNA for the years 2018 to 2020. It’s a two-year term of office. The ‘Nomination for Regional Director Form’ is provided in this issue of The Litter Box on page 15. The form is also available on the JCNA website. Please note that the nomination deadline is August 1. It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Havner Parish on June 1. Havner – ‘Hav’ as he was known in the club – was CJC President in 2004 and 2005 and was a devoted and enthusiastic Jaguar owner and club member. Please see his obituary inside this issue lovingly prepared by our editor, Jerry Cohen. Another passing of sorts to note, Scott Jaguar finalizes the sale of the Jaguar franchise to Hendrick Automotive Group this month. The club has

In memorial: Past CJC President (2004-2005)

Dr. Havner Parish

Carolina Jaguar Club past president, Havner H. Parish Jr., MD, 88, of Southern Pines, died Wednesday evening, June 1, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Havner Hurd Parish and Mary Conn Parish; his brother, Allen S. Parish; his wife, Isabel Grayson Parish. Havner proudly served his country as a member of the Army's 7th Infantry from 1946-1948; and as a reservist in following years. A graduate in Medical Science at Wash-ington University, St. Louis, and of Duke Medical School, Durham, he practiced urological medicine in Selma, Ala-bama, Albany, Georgia, and Fearrington, North Carolina. Upon his retirement and move to Pinehurst and South-ern Pines respectively, he served others through medical locum tenens work in various localities across America and abroad. He possessed a keen mind with active interests in an as-sortment of fields beyond medical science, including avi-ation, aerospace technology and engineering, astrono-my, geology, anthropology, ornithology, and cosmology. As a pilot, he loved flying and traveling with his beloved wife, Isabel, where they explored and savored human culture, world adventures, and natural life on all seven continents.

He was also a gifted musician who relished the bassoon, playing it with humble zeal in many orchestral groups. He was an avid sportsman, particularly in tennis and golf. Havner enjoyed showing and driving his restored Jaguar (E Type), a vehicle happily visible in the joy of many Fourth of July parades and won numerous prizes and awards including AACA 1st place senior division. It was always a first in class winner at the Carolina Jaguar Club annual concours. Havner will always be remembered for his upbeat posi-tive attitude and low keyed medically referenced humor. He kept us entertained with stories of playing in circus bands and what the next adventure was on the long road to restoring his E-Type. A private ceremony celebrating his life will take place at a later date at Emmanuel Church, Southern Pines, where he and the love of his life, Isabel, were devoted, worship-ing members. By: Dr. Jerry Ellison, CJC Road Master FL As you are reading this - (With the help of Judy & Skip Meyers) - Planning is under-way for the Carolina Jaguar Club Autumn Road Trip for this year during the period of Tues.-Oct. 3rd -to- Sun.- Oct. 8th (arriving on Mon.-Oct.2nd for the whole Trip) - in the area around Knox-ville, TN. (Hopefully a lot cooler than the past two Road-Trips.) Right now I am in the EARLY planning stages of this "Driving-event-Trip" and am in the early stages of Route Planning and "Things-to-Do" planning. Some of the Areas I have under consideration and plan-ning so far include: ** LAUREL CREEK By-way and CADES COVE LOOP ROAD Scenic By-way - a 45 mile Scenic Drive regarded by many Travel Guide Authors as the one of the finest sce-nic drives in the entire Southern USA. This Travel Day will also include a visit to Townsend-(a "Mountain-crafts" town); ** OAK RIDGE - Facility site for the design and planning of the 1st Atomic Bomb, and now a "Museum" town; ** Rugby, TN - an early (1900) Experimental Town in communal living; ** Museum of the Appalachia; and -( currently in process & planning)-- a Riverboat cruise and "on-board" Dinner; AND - MANY, many miles of Scenic Hi-way and "By-way" Jaguar-road-Type Driving. ** I also planning ONE full day of visiting and "sight-seeing" with-in Knoxville.

(Sometimes I get so caught up in planning the Scenic Drives that I forget to plan for the interesting things to do & see in these larger Southern Cities.) (We are not very far from Pigeon Forge - BUT everything I hear about Pigeon Forge equates it to a Carnival-Town & very crowded- and reportedly "to-be-avoided-at-all-cost") I have also considering a trip along the Cherohala Sky-way & "Tail-of-the-Dragon" Scenic Drives, But we have done both of those at least once, And may not be of in-terest again -(and full day -6-1/2 hr drive -from Knox-ville). (Maybe to be offered as an option to the "sight-seeing" day in Knoxville.) ( Due to the number of Motor-cycle Traffic accidents - the TENN State-Police has reduced the speed-limit on "The Tail-of-the-Dragon" to less that 25 MPH, & very closely patrolled with electronic monitoring.)

===================================================================== I currently have made arrangements for our lodging in Knoxville at the HAMPTON INN - WEST KNOXVILLE @ Cedar Bluff (at- 9128 Executive Park Dr., Knoxville, TN) - Phn. (865)- 693-1101 - with a CJC Rate of $104 (+tx & Fees) per night -for reservations made prior to SEP-TEMBER 4th (which is a $20+/nt savings) !! PLEASE: LOOK AT YOUR CALENDERS AND LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS YOU CAN IF YOU CAN JOIN US !! - AND make your Hotel reservations prior to SEPTEMBER.

enjoyed the hospitality of Scott Jaguar by their gracious hosting of the November election meetings. They were also major sponsors of the CJC concours in Little Switzerland. Who can forget the year that Scotty Scott drove the F-Type to the concours for the members to test drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We wish the Scott family all the best that the future holds. I close with these words of wisdom – don’t try to save a few bucks by buying a whole watermelon and slicing it up yourself. I tried that. Four stitches and an urgent care bill later, I will now buy pre-sliced watermelon. The irony is not lost on me that the number of stitches equals what I was going to save - $4! Of course, Scott feels compelled to frequently remind me of my folly. See you in Little Switzerland – sans stitches.

Announcement from The Scott Family to the

members of The Carolina Jaguar Club

On June 21, 2017 Scott Jaguar expects to finalize the sale of their Jaguar franchise to Hendrick Automo-tive Group. Scott Jaguar has proudly represented the renowned vehicle to its automotive clients for over thirty years. With the Scott family heritage of sixty-three years in the Charlotte business arena, we have maintained a legacy comparable to the Jaguar brand. Since 1954 the Scott name, beginning with Hutton Scott Company, Scott Buick, Scott Cars and lastly as Scott Jaguar, has been a mainstay in the automobile business in the city of Charlotte. Although our fran-chise and location changed over the years, our quali-ty of service and care to our customers and employ-ees have continued to reflect the high standards of honesty and integrity set forth by the dealership's founder and patriarch of our family, W.B. "Bill" Scott. The Scott/Smith families considered, at length, the requirements needed to meet the future demands of a Jaguar franchise. We believe that financial in-vestment and/or securing a new location would compromise our ability to serve our current custom-ers and employees, and the Charlotte business com-munity at-large as a family owned and operated business. We have had a long and rewarding business venture in Charlotte. We have delivered thousands of vehi-cles over the years and to all of our customers, we extend our heart-felt gratitude. And, to our "Jag" customers over the last thirty-plus years, we are grateful to have had the opportunity to serve you

and we thank you for your loyalty and friendship. Our utmost appreciation goes to our employees, who have truly become part of the Scott family. Many have been with us for decades. They have shared in the milestones of our lives, celebrated births of our children, carried the caskets of our grandfather and fathers. We are grateful for their dedication to our business, their kindness, and their friendship to our family. Finally, we would like to recognize the life's work of three generations. Each person in our family has worked at this dealership in one capacity or anoth-er. Even the fourth generation of great-grandchildren have occasionally answered phones or filed invoices during their summer breaks. Virgin-ia Scott, the unshakable matriarch of our family, considered it her job for sixty years to bring in holi-day treats of homemade candies for our employees. We have been a family, always, united by this busi-ness. The Jaguar franchise will be sold but the Scott family's history and legacy has no price. It has been our honor to be among the last bastion of "old-school, family-owned" car businesses in the city. To the Charlotte Automobile Dealers Associa-tion, and all our colleagues in the area, we bid you a fond farewell. And, to Charlotte, The Queen City, thanks for the ride! Respectfully submitted in memory of Bill and Virginia Scott.

8 The Litter Box June 2017

(To commemorate the 25th anniversary of CJC, I will be offering, over the next few months, excerpts from the reports of club doings at various times during the last 25 years. This month’s offering is a description of the 1994 Spring Fling held on Ocracoke Island at the Anchorage Inn as reported in the June 1994 Litter Box. Many thanks to Bob Wasson, Charter Member of CJC and Vice Presi-dent in 1994, for the original reporting and providing me the accompanying photo which ran with the original arti-cle.) “Ocracoke Island—PERFECT!” Thursday “…We set up the cooker beside the road in front of the T-shirt shop since it wasn’t open, and put the club tent draped with flags next to it. The Anchorage (Inn) pool and sundeck area, where we will eat, is just a few feet further. Ron (Nordmann) soon had two hams and a 14 pound turkey breast roasting. The hickory chips on the charcoal were drawing people from everywhere!... Ron had also picked up some soft shell crabs, several of which made a delightful lunch for us… …Guests rolled in, unpacked, and congregated under the tent and by the pool…Supper was fabulous, with tuna bits, steamed shrimp, and soft shell crab appetizers, bar-becue pork, turkey breast, and chicken halves, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and rolls…” Friday “…Ron re-heated the leftovers from last night’s supper…Then we loaded everyone into four all-wheel drive vehi-cles and drove out on the beach. We flew kites, looked for shells, swapped stories, and napped in the sun… …After watching a lovely sunset while eating dinner at

the Island Inn…we went back to the Anchorage for cock-tails on the veranda. We were having a great time until the desk clerk came out and told us to be quiet! So we all went to my room and made more noise…” Saturday “…Saturday was the Portsmouth Island experience! (The deerflies) didn’t bite…but they did annoy everyone flying around our heads. Our Guide, Tommy Williams, showed us how to keep them away with a wax myrtle branch. We really looked strange all walking around waving wax myrtle branches around our heads… … Tommy’s wife Lou played the organ in the church for us… But the high point was the hundred year old Lifesav-ing Station where most of us enjoyed the view from the crow’s nest, and also enjoyed the rest rooms!... …Ron Bennett, Ron Nordmann, and Jack Vaughn had a half-day fishing charter, and caught a bunch of fish! The rest of us had the afternoon free, to sun, shop, or shell… …The fishermen got back just in time to shower and change for a fabulous dinner at Captain Ben’s. After din-ner, Jack and Fontella (Vaughn) had a wine party in their room…” Sunday “…We bid farewells to our friends and the islands Sunday morning, after a photo session with the Jags in front of the harbor. (Clouds finally started rolling in as we crossed the Pamlico Sound. One last great seafood meal at Tony’s Sanitary Fish Market, and then on home. It re-ally was a ‘Perfect” Spring Fling!”

THURSDAY Some folks have wondered what happened to the Thurs-day Cook Out. We thought you might want a free even-ing to leisurely eat and drink with friends, old and new. The Inn will have their normal menu available, should you care to eat there. And there are numerous other venues relatively close that may also be interesting to try out. We are looking into having the Patio bar open for your after-dinner enjoyment. More to come! FRIDAY DRIVE EVENT: Jerry Ellison has developed a wonderful drive to - and tour of - Penland School of Crafts (http://penland.org/ ) for Friday July 14th at 10:30am. The Tour takes about 1.5 hours and costs $5.34 per person at the door. This is over and above the amount charged on your registration for the Friday drive event. Jerry will need to give them a number of how many will be attending at the end of June. They also said there is a limit to the number that they can accommodate on the Tour – up to 36-ish attendees -- so this event will be lim-ited to "First-Registered - First-Served". Thus far, 20 people have signed up for the tour. Jerry can also make arrangements for us to have them serve us a "fixed-price" "Box Lunch" in the Coffee Shop at the Gallery, and he will also check to see if we can also have Lunch in the School Cafeteria (which may be prefer-able - as it is only 13 miles/ 30min from the Penland School back to the Switzerland Inn - and some may pre-fer to go back to the Inn for Lunch - rather than eat at the School). Jerry was told that there is some outside walking on "un-even" ground and not many places to sit down or rest - so this should be considered when signing up for the School Tour. He has done this Tour a couple of time and it is a very interesting Tour and great fun and NOT that hard, or strenuous!! Jerry has planned a "Scenic Route" Road-Trip -(all Route Maps & Driving Instructions will be provided) from the Switzerland Inn to the Penland School - which is report-edly 29 miles long and takes (reportedly)- 58 minutes. Leaving the Inn at 9 AM - we should reach the School at somewhere near 10 AM - and the Tour is scheduled for

10:30 AM. For those who are running late - there is a more direct Route which takes only 30 min & is only 13 miles -and Jerry will have some Maps and Route instruc-tions available for those also). For those who cannot make the Penland School Visit - Jerry also putting together a SEPARATE "Event" to BURNSVILLE - which will include a "Scenic Drive" -(all Maps and Driving Instructions included)-, and a selection of Art Studios & Galleries to visit in Burnsville & Micaville, & Celo, and a selection of "very neat" Restaurants in Burnsville !! They will be sending him a little more information about the Penland School Tour, and he will let us know further about the Lunch options. FRIDAY EVENING ENTERTAINMENT: We have two ways for you to relax and enjoy your Friday after dinner. First, Steve Thomas has introduced us to Joe Pepitone, an Automotive Portrait artist (check out www.pepitonecreativeservices.com/Auto/portfolio.html ). He has been featured in Hemmings Clas-sic Car magazine, among others, and is well respected in the automotive industry. He will present to us “The Art of the Automobile”, and will last for about 45 minutes. I’m sure you will enjoy the discussion and visuals he’ll be sharing. His work is stunning! After Joe’s presentation, we will be presenting an appro-priately-themed movie for your viewing pleasure. No commercials! Popcorn will be available! Location for both of these will be dependent upon the weather. The CONCOURS Itself – Saturday, July 15: As in past years, the plan is to park the Judged cars on the grass behind the Restaurant, and the Display cars behind the Inn. Our Field Team will begin escorting cars to their appointed positions on Saturday at 08:00am. **There will be no parking on the field prior to Saturday 8am. And all cars must be escorted – both Judged and Dis-play** Gregg and others before him have created such an excel-lent event that our Concours has become very popular to surrounding car clubs and enthusiasts. Because we are

dedicated to the safety of our people, the Inn’s property, and our vehicles, and based upon our experiences over the past 3 years, we will be limiting the number of Judged vehicles on the grass field to 30 (same as last year); currently 11 are registered. And the Display vehi-cles on the grass field is limited to 10; six are registered. Overflow parking for Judged vehicles will be in the park-ing lot nearest the tennis court; overflow parking for Dis-play vehicles will be in the parking lot nearest Geneva Hall. And as in years past, in the event of “cloud-tears” (i.e. r-a-i-n), we will resort to Plan B. SILENT AUCTION: Once again, Jaime Lovello has volunteered to lead the Silent Auction, which is one of the most fun events all weekend! Jaime and team will set up the auction items in the Inn’s Great Room. Your mission? To bid on items you could not bear to leave without. Write your name and bid amount on the associated form, then come back multiple times to assure yours is the highest bid. Then after the Awards presentation, find out if you’ve won your selected items! Payments will again be accepted via cash, check or credit card. Also – why not do a little Spring cleaning and donate a few items to the cause? Contact Jaime if you can volunteer or if you have items to donate. ASSISTANCE NEEDED: We need your help. Putting on this event is a TEAM sport. We simply cannot make this work without YOU. When we say “you”, we literally mean EVERY ONE of YOU. Giving 2 hours of your 57 hours to help out should be a no-brainer. If every one gives some, no one is re-quired to give all. Make it enjoyable for all by doing your part. Welcome to the 2017 JCNA International Jaguar Festival

This event is being held at the renowned Lanier Islands resort in Buford, Ga., just 45 minutes northeast of Atlanta. The venue covers 1,500 scenic acres, all on interconnected islands in the middle of picturesque Lake Lanier. Events will be spread across several of the islands and there will be a dedicated trolley shuttles around the event sites. Thursday evening’s Welcome Reception will be held lakeside under a pavilion overlooking the lake and the beautiful North Georgia mountains backdrop. Various JCNA-related activities will include a Slalom on Thursday, the Concours on Friday, and the Rally on Saturday. The rally will have an unusual and fun format, while still meeting the JCNA requirements. There will also be a scenic drive option and all scheduled daytime IJF ac-tivities include lunch, with additional lunches available for pur-chase, so there will be no need to leave the resort to eat. There are plans for a Friday Sunset Cruise and Buffet Dinner on the lake (complete with onboard entertainment). Seating is limited, so sign up early. There will be a showing of Grand Prix with dinner at an outdoor theatre for those unable to secure seats on the cruise. The 2017 JCNA International Jaguar Festi-
