Community Plantation by BISWA
Each year a lot of plantationprogrammes are undertaken by BISWAmostly during monsoon, as it iscommitted towards caring theenvironment. But such a programmenever took place in any urban location. For the first time, BISWA attempted toundertake some Community PlantationProgramme in the urban area ofSambalpur. It intents to plant at least twothousand saplings of various types inthis programme and the main thrust ison involving the local communities withraising their awareness level on globalwarming with it. This CommunityPlantation in Urban Sambalpur gotstarted on Sunday the July 26th, 2009 at10 O'clock in the forenoon atSakhigopinathpara. The exact locationcould be pin pointed at Bank Colony &Radhanagar near Radhakrushna Templethere. The local community membersextended their warm cooperation withinvolving themselves in the programme. In fact, Mr Shiv Prasad Meher, ManagerPublic Relations & Mr Rusi Patra, a socialworker, initiated a discussion with thosecommunity members earlier & there wasa bout of discussions with them in thisconnection. Revealing the very intentionof BISWA in this connection, Mr Meherexplained them then that how importantis the community participation in such aprogramme. BISWA would be mere afacilitator and would provide saplingsas per their choice and the communitymembers have to come forward to dig
the pits, plant thesaplings, irrigate andprotect them till theirsurvival. They alsorealised theimportance of theirrole and accepted toshoulder thoser e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s .Saplings of variousvarieties such as Neem,
Karanj, Krushnachuda &Radhachuda, as per their
choice were provided tothem by BISWA at their
doorstep one day earlier. They also gotthe pits dug and gathered to participatein the plantation at the right time. MrR.K.Pradhan, General Manager, ProjectManagement, Aditya Aluminium & Mr.B.K.Das, AGM-NABARD took up theleadership in this front. Among othersMr Sanjib Panda, Mr S.N.Panigrahi, MrS.Bhoi, Mr R.K.Mishra & Mr RameshBadapanda also helped the plantationoperation with their lead roles. Thecamera crew members of local cabletelevision channels, Sambalbhumi TV &Ulgulan TV arrived at the nick of thetime to cover the event in their newsprogramme. Their presence reallyencouraged the community members totake active participation in that venture. They also recorded the statements ofsome of the participants for theirtelecast. Such was the spirit that withinno time almost all the saplings wereduly planted in the dug pits.Incidentally one official from SambalpurMunicipality Council lodged his timelypresence to guide the plantationoperation as to the norms and rules ofthe local government. Soon after theplantation operation was over, some ofthe community members assembled todiscuss and decide the strategy on howto maintain the trees till their survivalas soon as the monsoon season is over.It was a nice bid on behalf of BISWA aswell as the community members, as itwas the actual need of the day.

EEEEEditorialCommunity Plantation
The whole world is nowthreatened by a universal problem, global warming and the threatperception is increasing day byday. We all are the ultimatesufferer. Earlier this threat was inshape of our concept but now it isquite visible and even measureable. There are so many measuresidentified to address this problem, but plantation in large scale asmuch as possible is the only handyway out for us. Even thoughplantation is being taken intopractise since long, but it was veryoften lacking peoples'participation. As a matter of fact, peoples' participation is being seenas a mere ritual very often and thenit lacked the peoples' participationin real term. So if we can motivatefor peoples' involvement in placeof their mere participation, theresult could be manifolds and moreaffective. Such an attempt wastaken by BISWA with initiating'community plantation in urbanarea of Sambalpur'. The verypurpose was to provide a broad baseto this campaign. The role ofBISWA is here is just a facilitator. It would provide saplings as wellas motivate people in thecommunity to come forward toparticipate in this plantationcampaign in a big way. Fortunatelythe very first attempt taken in thisdirection has clicked. People fromthe community came and lodgedsuccess to the campaign. Amein, that is a very good sign. Thissuccess would encourage both thestake holders, organisation as wellas people.
