“Strengthening Churches to BE the Church: Equip, Encourage, Empower”

In 2000, Cornealious Anderson was sentenced to 13 years for robbery. The 23-

year-old was released on bail and told to await orders to show up to prison. But due to a clerical error, those orders never came. Some people might have taken advantage of such freedom and committed more crimes. But Anderson started a business, coached youth football and volunteered at church, earning respect in his community. Thirteen years later, when Missouri offi-cials discovered the error and put Anderson behind bars, an online petition called for his release. A judge agreed that Anderson was a changed man and, again, he was freed. What would you do with such under-served freedom? What do you do with the unmerited freedom God grants us despite our sin, and with the freedoms we celebrate on July 4th? May we follow Anderson’s example and use our freedoms — social and spiritual — to serve others.

SCBA WMUSCBA WMUSCBA WMUSCBA WMU: Sunflowers stand tall and bright---the senti-

nels of yard, garden, and flowerbed. “Tournesol,” French for sunflower, means “turns with the sun.” Their heads actu-ally track the sun’s movement throughout the day. Special memories from summers spent in the Crimea Region of Ukraine in the ‘90s as a volunteer missionary include sun-flowers covering vast undulating fields as far as the eye could see. Their happy faces turned eastward in the morning and bowed toward the sunset in late evening as God’s crea-tion daily followed its Creator. They became a personal re-minder of where I should focus every day as a “Son flower,” no matter what! “…let us run the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” (Heb. 12:1-3 NKJ). As NC awaits decisions on transitioning into the next phase of reopening in response to COVID-19, remember to confirm any events you have planned to attend in the coming weeks. Future events to consider include: October 10, Fall Children’s Mission Days (FCMD) for boys and girls grades 1-6 at CMV; November 7, FCMD at Fruitland Baptist Church (www.facebook.com/WMUNCpreschoolandchildren/) ; and November 6-8, Au-tumn Journey Mother-Daughter Retreat at CMV. For events at CMV check out www.campmundovista.com and click on COVID Update for detailed information regarding proce-dures and program updates. Saturday July 4 we will celebrate the birth of American independence without the usual spectacular fireworks dis-plays, parades, and picnics due to the response to COVID-

19. In essence, no party, no presents, or candles for the cake. However, it will still be America’s 244th birthday. Let’s celebrate by joining our hearts in prayer based on 1 Chronicles 7:14 where it is written: “If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Remember, this is written to God’s people, not to unbelievers. Then pray for the salvation of the lost, and for all who are in positions of authority in our nation according to 1 Timothy 2:1-8. “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man [woman] avails much” (James 5:16b NKJ). This is the best birthday gift we can give our nation and its citizens. Sunflowers, one of my favorite flowers, symbolize adora-tion, loyalty, and longevity. May that describe us as God’s “Son flowers” in today’s topsy-turvy world as we daily…

“Turn [our] eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face;

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.”

Please pray for the family of Rev. James Clark. He was the pastor of Kingdom Builders of Christ, in Sanford. Brother Clark left his earthly home to be

with Jesus in June.
