KEY ROLE TO PLAY Ireland defines scope of work during two well-attended Roadshows L EEA demonstrated its credentials to support members and end users of lifting equipment in Ireland at two successful ‘Lifting the Load—Out on the Road’ Roadshows in Belfast and Dublin during the same week in June. The association delivered a lifting equipment exhibition, seminars and networking opportunities to Belfast on the Tuesday before travelling south to Dublin two days later. Each Roadshow took place from 10am to 3pm and included presentations on topical subjects, professional networking, exhibition space for LEEA members, a buffet lunch and was free to attendees. The Roadshows exceeded original expectations and welcomed 47 visitors to Belfast and 45 to Dublin. Presentations got underway at 11am and were delivered by Andrew Wright, learning and development manager; and Denis Hogan, UK country manager and regional manager—west. Wright introduced the LEEA Academy before Hogan tackled Lifting Equipment Documentation. Hogan said: “There was demand to take our Roadshow concept to Ireland and continue to raise our profile in a market that is facing many challenges and opportunities related to the supply and use of lifting equipment. Both events were measurable in success by the level of questions and interaction following presentations and around the Roadshows generally.” Ireland’s Health & Safety Authority (HSA) has responsibility for workplace health and safety in the southern region and LEEA has a clear role to play in the provision of technical and legal advice for those working with lifting equipment in the geography. Hogan said: “There were many questions about technical and legal matters and it was encouraging that, as the representative body for all those involved in the lifting industry worldwide, we were able to provide the answers that will be helpful to attendees and their companies moving forward.” Hogan explained that there are many similarities to observe between the documentation produced by the HSA and that of the UK’s LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations). The HSA regulations are being used by the oil and gas sector which represents another fit given the volume of activity taking place in exploration off the Irish coastline, he observed. “LEEA also has a role to play in inspection because the oil and gas sector requires people who are qualified to do the work,” Hogan added. LEEA currently has 13 members in Northern Ireland and there are 14 existing members in the Republic of Ireland. The association has recently received five new applications for membership in the Republic which will go through the membership assessment process and, if successful, will receive formal offers of membership from the association. LEEA will take the ‘Lifting the Load—Out on the Road’ Roadshow to the Holiday Inn, Cardiff on 17 September. The technical teamhave been busy withaudits of members acrossthe UK plus France, Qatar,USA, Saudi Arabia andKuwait. This increasedengagement withmembers is helping manymore in their developmentto full membership.

The focus for trainingseems to have moved tothe UK with very highactivity levels in theHuntingdon training centre and coursesbeing delivered at members premises inAberdeen, Glasgow, Middlesbrough,Tyneside, Gt Yarmouth and Shropshire. We have completed the installation ofour training structures at Huntingdon withthe installation of a 125kg swing jib kindlydonated by a member company. Work isnow underway to incorporate practicalsessions using all this new equipment intothe runways and light crane structurescourse.

The LEEA Roadshows in Ireland werewell supported and a great success with

The LEEA Lifting &Rigging Conference Asiain Singapore saw 150delegates enjoy a widerange of speakers overthe two days. Thedelegates all gave goodfeedback about the eventand the success could bewitnessed by the factthat the room was stillfull at the end of thesecond day despite yourstruly being the closingspeaker!

great success despite Wales living up to itsreputation for rainy weather. That didntdampen the enthusiasm of the 56 golferswho attended. Alan Walton did anexcellent job organising it and now passesthe baton over to William Hackett for the2016 event, which I understand will beheld at a course just outside Durham.
