Established in 1922 as a humble technical school, Makerere University(MAK) is one of the oldest and most prestigious Universities in AfricaIt is ranked the fourth institution of higher learning in Africa, according to ranking released by Webometrics, an organisation that monitors university performance worldwide.

Makerere has 9 halls of residence that is:

BOYS Livingstone Lumumba, Nsibirwa, Nkurumah, Mitchel and University hall

THE LIFE OF BOXERS IN MAKERERE

Boxers are part of the Lumbox solidarity in Makerere University which consists of Lumumba hall

and Mary Stuart hall

LUMUMBA HALL

Lumumba hall was built in the late 1960s and was opened in 1971. It was named after Congolese freedom fighter, Patrice Lumumba. It is the biggest hall on campus. It is located on Lumumba road just next to Mary Stuart.

The hall accommodates about 752 students, with 241 double rooms and two open blocks.

hall.

History of Mary Stuart hall

This was the first female hall that started in 1945 housed in a small house at the current Guest House. The hall was named after the wife of the missionary Dr Stuart of Mengo Hospital known as Mary Stuart The hall is the biggest female hall known as box due to the physical structure of the hall. It houses female students and they call themselves boxers.

The hall has a total of 208 rooms, in the eight-storied tower block and two wings

THE CULTURE OF LUMUMBA

The Hall logo is an elephant and the students call themselves Elephants.

The cultural symbol is Gongom introduced by former students including the current Lt Gen. Elly Tumwine

Mary Stuart hall has a monument of Gongomesi a symbol of a woman believed to be wife of Gongom

Hall Motto: “Train a woman a nation trained”

Porridge night is one of the ways that boxers celebrate

their cultureThey carry a big saucepan to Marystuart and are joined by the gallant elephants

from Lumumba hall . They make the porridge at Marystuart quadrangle.
