A Tip for the Hangman A Novel Allison EpsteinChristopher Marlowe, a brilliant aspiring playwright, is pulled into the duplicitousworld of international espionage on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I. A many-layeredhistorical thriller combining state secrets, intrigue, and romance. England, 1585. In Kit Marlowe's last year at Cambridge, he receives anunexpected visitor: Queen Elizabeth's spymaster, who has come with anunorthodox career opportunity. Her Majesty's spies are in need of new recruits, and Kit's flexible moral compass has drawn their attention. Kit, a scholarshipstudent without money or prospects, accepts the offer, and after his trainingthe game is on. Kit is dispatched to the chilly manor where Mary, Queen ofScots is under house arrest, to act as a servant in her household and keep hisear to the ground for a Catholic plot to put Mary on the throne.

While observing Mary, Kit learns more than he bargained for. The rippleeffects of his service to the Crown are far-reaching and leave Kit a changedman. But there are benefits as well. The salary he earns through his spyworkallows him to mount his first play, and over the following years, he becomesthe toast of London's raucous theater scene. But when Kit finds himselfreluctantly drawn back into the uncertain world of espionage, conspiracy, andhigh treason, he realizes everything he's worked so hard to attain--includingthe trust of the man he loves--could vanish before his very eyes.

Pairing modern language with period detail, Allison Epstein bringsElizabeth's privy council, Marlowe's lovable theater troupe, and the squalor ofsixteenth-century London to vivid, teeming life as Kit wends his way behind thescenes of some of Tudor history's most memorable moments. At the center ofthe action is Kit himself--an irrepressible, irreverent force of nature. Thrillinglywritten, full of poetry and danger, A Tip for the Hangman brings anunforgettable protagonist to new life, and makes a centuries-old story feelutterly contemporary.

HEARTFELT LOVE STORY: Kit's lovely romance with Tom is one of the novel's centralstrengths, and a key component of the action of the novel's second half. Khalil A Novel Yasmina KhadraFrom the internationally bestselling author of The Attack and The Swallows ofKabul, a gripping first-person narrative about one young man's involvement inFrance's worst terrorist attack. Khalil, a twenty-three-year-old Belgian of Moroccan descent, plans todetonate a suicide vest in a crowd outside the Stade de France on November13, 2015. Explosions are rocking Paris, at cafés and the Bataclan theater, andwhen other bombs drive the stadium crowd to flee in his direction, near theMetro, his time has come. He presses his button, and . . . nothing. Fearing hehas failed in his mission for Fraternel Solidarity (FS), an ISIS affiliate, Khalil haslittle choice but to blend in with his would-be victims and run. Back in Belgium,he must lie low and avoid his militant brethren and the authorities. He relies onhis family and friends for places to stay, but he keeps the truth about himselfsecret. All the while, he contemplates what he almost did, and what he will donext--particularly when it comes to light that his vest accidently had been aharmless training unit all along, and FS has a new mission planned for him. In this daring, propulsive literary thriller, Yasmina Khadra takes readers tothe margins of Europe's glittering capitals, through neighborhoods isolated bygovernment neglect and popular apathy, if not outright racism. And he bringsto life an unusual protagonist, a young man struggling with family, religion, andpolitics who makes fateful choices, and in doing so dramatizes powerfulquestions about society and human nature.

A RARE PERSPECTIVE: Reading Khalil's first-person narrative offers Americanreaders a peek into a mind and heart we rarely ever have a chance to contemplate. He's presented as an ordinary person who's been pushed too far--not so much byreligious fanaticism as by the psychological, social, political, and cultural conditions inwhich he lives: by racism, poverty, helplessness, societal rage, and generalresentment. It's a moving and revealing portrait.KHADRA GOES WHERE OTHERS DARE NOT: Khalil is a masterly and chilling look atradicalization and violence and their effects on ordinary people. Like Khadra's previousnovels, it's a powerful exploration of the depths of human nature and shows that, evenin the most horrific circumstances, good can prevail.MAJOR BESTSELLER IN FRANCE: Éditions Robert Laffont quickly sold more than100,000 copies during the fall of 2018.

Mine! How the Hidden Rules of Ownership Control Our Lives Michael A. Heller and James SalzmanA hidden set of rules governs who owns what--explaining everything from whetheryou can recline your airplane seat to why HBO lets you borrow a passwordillegally--and in this lively and entertaining guide, two acclaimed law professorsreveal how things become "mine." "Mine" is one of the first words babies learn. By the time we grow up, theidea of ownership seems natural, whether buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you reclining or thesquished laptop user behind? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it's okay toknock-off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair inthe street hold your parking space in Chicago, but in New York you lose thespace and the chair?

Mine! explains these puzzles and many more. Surprisingly, there are just sixsimple stories that everyone uses to claim everything. Owners choose the storythat steers us to do what they want. But we can always pick a different story. This is true not just for airplane seats, but also for battles over digital privacy, climate change, and wealth inequality. As Michael Heller and James Salzmanshow--in the spirited style of Freakonomics, Nudge, and PredictablyIrrational--ownership is always up for grabs.

With stories that are eye-opening, mind-bending, and sometimes infuriating, Mine! reveals the rules of ownership that secretly control our lives.

A BIG IDEA BOOK: Mine! does for ownership what The Signal and the Noise did forstatistics and Predictably Irrational did for psychology--it reveals an invisible set ofrules that guide everyday life.FUN TAKEAWAYS: By the end of Mine! you'll know that you can sell your blood butnot your kidney, that someone can trespass on your land to pick mushrooms but notapples, and whether HBO can arrest you for borrowing a password. (Trick question! They want you to!) LIVELY STORYTELLING: Drawing on dozens of cases and examples, the authorsdramatize their principles with fascinating stories of how ownership is less transparentthan we assume.PROMOTABLE AUTHORS: Heller and Salzman have experience promoting and havebeen voted favorite professor for making learning clear and fun.

Brood A Novel Jackie PolzinAn exquisite new literary voice--wryly funny, nakedly honest, beautifullyobservational, in the vein of Jenny Offill and Elizabeth Strout--depicts one woman'sattempt to keep her four chickens alive while reflecting on a recent loss Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries tokeep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endlesschallenges that caring for another creature entails. From the forty-below nightsof a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprisetornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future thatmay not look anything like the one she always imagined.

Intimate and startlingly original, this slender novel is filled with wisdom, sorrow and joy. As the year unfolds, we come to know the small band of lovedones who comprise the narrator's circumscribed life at this moment. Hermother, a flinty former home-ec teacher who may have to take over thechickens; her best friend, a real estate agent with a burgeoning family of herown; and her husband whose own coping mechanisms for dealing with themiscarriage that haunts his wife are more than a little unfathomable to her.

A stunning and brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing that willstand beside such modern classics as H is for Hawk and Gilead, Brood rewardsits readers with the richness of reflection and unrelenting hope.

VOICE: She brings the economy of Jenny Offill, the sharpness of Miranda July, and thenarrative drive drawn from everyday life of Elizabeth Strout. MIDWESTERN SETTING: Set in Minnesota, this novel is packed with the kind ofunusual, unforgettable details (a rooster frozen to a barn roof?!) that make for astand-out read.CONVERSATION STARTER: Polzin tackles a very difficult and deeply personalsubject, one that affects a staggering number of women yet remains shrouded insilence. Brood is a profoundly affecting read, one that prompts conversations andshared stories. SLIM BOOK/BROAD READERSHIP: Short enough to be read in a single sitting, Broodwill be as easily embraced by book clubs as literary tastemakers.BUZZ: We won this in an eight-way auction, and the subsequent auction in the U.K.lasted nearly a week.

Ageless The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old Andrew SteeleA startling chronicle by a brilliant young scientist takes us onto the frontiers of thescience of aging, and reveals how close we are to an astonishing extension of ourlife spans and a vastly improved quality of life in our later years. Aging--not cancer, not heart disease--is the true underlying cause of mosthuman death and suffering. We accept as inevitable that as we advance inyears our bodies and minds begin to deteriorate and that we are ever morelikely to be felled by dementia or disease. But we never really ask--is agingnecessary? Biologists, on the other hand, have been investigating that questionfor years. After all, there are tortoises and salamanders whose risk of dying isthe same no matter how old they are. With the help of science, could humansfind a way to become old without getting frail, a phenomenon known as"biological immortality"?

In Ageless, Andrew Steele, a computational biologist and science writer, takes us on a journey through the laboratories where scientists are studyingevery bodily system that declines with age--DNA, mitochondria, stem cells, ourimmune systems--and developing therapies to reverse the trend. Withbell-clear writing and intellectual passion, Steele shines a spotlight on alittle-known revolution already underway.

A BIG IDEA THAT REFRAMES MOST DISEASES AS ILLNESSES OF AGING: Wetend to think of heart disease, dementia, and cancers as different diseases to beseparately researched, prevented, or cured. Steele shows us that most diseases arediseases of aging and can be solved in one swoop with this approach. FASCINATING REVELATIONS: We learn that every year our life expectancyincreases by three months, and about an epigenetic clock that can tell you when youare going to die.ACTION ITEMS: The first antiaging therapies are coming to market in a few shortyears. But Steele also reveals what we should do now. Avoid sugar, yes. Takevitamins, no. And absolutely do wear sunscreen. PROMOTABLE AUTHOR: In the UK, Steele is both a serious scientist and a publicfigure, seen on television and radio, at festivals, and even doing stand-up comedy.

About the Author/ I l lustratorAuthor Residence: London, UKAfter obtaining a PhD in physics from the University of Oxford, ANDREW STEELE decidedthat ageing was the most important scientific challenge of our time, and switched fieldsto computational biology. He worked at the Francis Crick Institute, using machinelearning to decode our DNA and predict heart attacks using patients' medical records. Heis now a ful-time science writer and presenter based in London. He has appeared onDiscovery and the BBC.

The Bedside Book of Birds An Avian Miscellany Graeme GibsonIn this lushly illustrated volume, novelist and lifelong birdwatcher Graeme Gibsonpresents an extraordinary tribute to the eternal relationship between humans andbirds, featuring a new introduction by Margaret Atwood. Birds have always been the symbols of humankind's highest aspirations. Asdivine messengers, signifiers of our reach toward enlightenment, or avatars ofglorious song and color, they have stirred our imaginations for generations.Whether the Christian dove, the Aztec Plumed Serpent, or Plato's vision of thehuman soul growing wings and feathers, religion and philosophy have selectedbirds as representatives of our better, spiritual selves.

With the passion of a birdwatcher and lover of words, Gibson collects theliterary and artistic forms our affinity for birds have taken over the centuries.Birds appear again and again in mythology and folk tales, and in literature bywriters as disparate as Ovid, Thomas Hardy, Kafka, Thoreau and T.S. Eliot. They've been omens, allegories, disguises and guides; they've beenworshipped, eaten, feared and loved. Birds figure charmingly and tellingly inthe work of such nature writers as Gilbert White, Peter Matthiessen, FarleyMowat and Barry Lopez, and feature in many of science's most famous casestudies, notably the Galapagos finches who cemented Darwin's reputation.Birds are inextricable throughout our scholarly and creative pursuits.

Gorgeously illustrated, woven from centuries of human response to thedelights of feathered fowl, The Bedside Book of Birds is for anyone who has acuriosity about birds, and for everyone who is intrigued by the artistic formsthat humanity has created to represent its soul in flight.

ATWOOD INTRODUCTION: Featuring a new introduction from Margaret Atwood.GORGEOUS GIFT BOOK: The perfect paper-over-board gift book for the birder marketand a lovely introduction for armchair naturalists.WRITER'S WRITER: Gibson was heavily involved in the Canadian literary world, andthis delightful collection of words and images highlights his thoughtful,forward-thinking style.SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: Gibson's beautiful prose and creative pairing ofsubjects ranging from literature, science, art, religion, and mythology means thatthere's something here for every reader with an interest in birds.PACKED WITH EXCITING MATERIAL: Gibson lovingly incorporates over 140selections from writers all over the world and through centuries, which pair perfectlywith 4-color art throughout.

Praise for The Bedside Book of Birds:"Gibson's book is a stunner. The wealth of imagery and the range of intelligence aregrand, the kinds of relationships with birds he sets out nearly bewildering." - -BarryLopez

When I Ran Away A Novel I lona BannisterA rich, bighearted debut that takes us from working-class Staten Island in the wakeof the September 11th attacks to moneyed London a decade later, revealing a storyof loss, motherhood, and love. As the Twin Towers collapse, Gigi Stanislawski flees her office building andescapes lower Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry. Among the crying,ash-covered, and shoeless passengers, Gigi, unbelievably, finds someone sherecognizes--Harry Harrison, a British man and a regular at her favorite coffeeshop. Gigi brings Harry to her parents' house, where they watch the televisionreplay the planes crashing for hours, and she waits for the phone call that willnever come: the call from Frankie, her younger brother.

Ten years later, Gigi, now a single mother consumed with bills andunfulfilled ambitions, meets Harry, again by chance, and they fall deeply, headlong in love. But their move to London and their new baby--which Gigihoped would finally release her from the past--leave her feeling isolated, raw,and alone with her grief. As Gigi comes face-to-face with the anguish of herbrother's death and her rage at the unspoken pain of motherhood, she mustsomehow find the light amid all the darkness. Startlingly honest and shotthrough with unexpected humor, When I Ran Away is an unforgettable firstnovel about love--for our partners, our children, our mothers, andourselves--pushed to its outer limits.

VOICE: This is voice-driven book club fiction for readers who loved Eleanor Oliphant.Gigi is a marvelous creation, bighearted and profane, self-deprecating with a tough-girlexterior that belies a tender and intense love.

SUBJECT: Gigi is suffering from acute postpartum depression and Ilona Bannisterbrilliantly shows how even the strongest women can be felled by the potent brew ofwork pressure, parenthood, inadequate mental-health resources, and stigma. It's anultimately uplifting portrait of a woman falling apart and pulling it back together.

AUTHOR: Ilona Bannister grew up in New York and has family here, but lives in Londonand is that rare writer who will be an asset on both sides of the pond. She's apassionate advocate for women and mental health and speaks eloquently on herinspiration for the novel.

The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity Carlo M. Cipolla

"A masterly book" --Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan"A classic" --Simon Kuper, Financial Times

In the spirit of On Bullshit and Assholes: A Theory, an economist explores the fivelaws that confirm our worst fears: stupid people can and do rule the world Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of humanwelfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It hasglobal catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world's mostpowerful boardrooms to your local bar.

It is human stupidity.

Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat. Both hilarious and dead serious, it will leave you better equipped to confrontpolitical realities, unreasonable colleagues, or your next dinner with yourin-laws.

The Laws:

1. Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.

2. The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any othercharacteristic of that person.

3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person whilederiving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.

4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupidindividuals.

5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.AN INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER: 350,000 copies have been sold in Italy since1988 and 50,000 copies in France since 2011. It has also been translated into German,Spanish, Galician, Catalan, Turkish, Portuguese, Hungarian, Czech, Romanian,Japanese, and Korean.FIRST US PUBLICATION: Although it was originally written in English, in the US, thismarks the first time it's being released for American readers.POWERFUL ENDORSEMENTS: Carlo Rovelli and Simon Kuper have both calledCippola's book "a classic" and Nassim Nicholas Taleb wrote a foreword for theEnglish-language edition in which he praises it as "a masterly book."A PROVOCATIVE ARGUMENT IN A SMALL PACKAGE: Like On Bullshit andAssholes: A Theory, this is a timeless treatise that will become a lively talking point.A PERFECT IMPULSE-BUY: Also like those titles, this is a short, giftable book. Itoffers great sales opportunities during the holidays, with great potential for whiteelephant gift-exchanges.

The God Equation The Quest for a Theory of Everything Michio KakuMichio Kaku, renowned theoretical physicist and New York Times bestsellingauthor of Hyperspace and The Future of Humanity, tells the story of the greatestquest in all of science. When Newton discovered the laws of motion and gravity, he unified therules of heaven and earth. From then on, physicists have been discovering newforces and incorporating them into ever-greater theories. But the majorbreakthroughs of the twentieth century--relativity and quantum mechanics--areincompatible, and so since then, physicists have been endeavoring to combinethese two theories. This would ultimately tie all the forces in the universetogether into one beautiful equation that can unlock the deepest mysteries ofspace and time. That epic journey is the story of this book.

COMMERCIAL APPEAL: Like Astrophysics for People in a Hurry and Seven BriefLessons on Physics, The God Equation is a short, accessible, and lively account offundamental ideas in modern physics that provides perfect fodder for armchairscientists. Kaku is an enthusiastic guide as he tells the story of science's greatestluminaries, from Newton to Einstein to those of today, and shows how theirbreakthroughs not only changed the world but were also steps on the path to a theoryof everything. This is poised to be Kaku's most successful title to date.BESTSELLING TRACK: Michio Kaku's two previous books have been nationalbestsellers. His most recent, The Future of Humanity (2018) debuted at #7 on the NewYork Times bestseller list and spent 4 weeks on the list, and The Future of the Mind(2014), debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and spent six weeks onthe list. Stampede Gold Fever and Disaster in the Klondike Brian CastnerA gripping and wholly original account of the epic human tragedy that was the greatKlondike Gold Rush of 1897-98. One hundred thousand men and women rushedheedlessly north to make their fortunes; very few did, but many thousands of themdied in the attempt. In 1897, the United States was mired in the worst economic depression thatthe country had yet endured. So when all the newspapers announced gold wasto be found in wildly enriching quantities at the Klondike River region of theYukon, a mob of economically desperate Americans swarmed north. Withinweeks tens of thousands of them were embarking from western ports to throwthemselves at some of the harshest terrain on the planet--in winteryet--woefully unprepared, with no experience at all in mining ormountaineering. It was a mass delusion that quickly proved deadly:avalanches, shipwrecks, starvation, murder.

Upon this stage, author Brian Castner tells a relentlessly driving story of thegold rush through the individual experiences of the iconic characters whoendured it. A young Jack London, who would make his fortune but not in gold.Colonel Samuel Steele, who tried to save the stampeders from themselves. Thenotorious gangster Soapy Smith, goodtime girls and desperate miners,Skookum Jim, and the hotel entrepreneur Belinda Mulrooney. The unvarnishedtale of this mass migration is always striking, revealing the amazing truth ofwhat people will do for a chance to be rich.

NARRATIVE NONFICTION AS A DISASTER MOVIE--WITH ALL THECAN'T-LOOK-AWAY POWER OF THE GENRE: Avalanches, shipwrecks, scurvy, gunfights, starvation, drowning, freezing to death, robberies, lethal swindles; so manyways to expire in the Yukon--and that is just for starters. AND YOU THOUGHT DEADWOOD WAS A TOUGH TOWN!: Matches that televisionmasterpiece in unforgettable characters, frontier mayhem, gripping storylines, venereal activity and total municipal corruption--and exceeds it in body count andsub-Arctic temperatures. YES, TRULY UNFORGETTABLE CHARACTERS: The names alone tell the tale. Theminer Lying George Carmack; the Indian Skookum Jim; Dudley Do-Rightish CanadianMountie Samuel Steele; maximum boss of Dawson gangster Soapy Smith; mistress ofevery sort of diversion a miner might crave Belinda Mulrooney; master conman JohnHealy; angel of mercy Mother Anna DeGraf; Jack London, who decided that writingbeat cold, isolation and scurvy as a way to earn a living. AND WOMEN GET THEIR DUE IN THIS TALE: While some of it is far from pretty (seeshowgirls and prostitution), many women traveled with the men and made theirexertions possible; others (Belinda Mulrooney for one) made a pile for themselves.
