Loretta Sweet Jemmott, PhD, RN, FAAN
A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Jemmott received a bacca-
laureate of science in nursing from Hampton Institute (Hampton Uni-
versity) in 1978. While a student at Hampton, Dr. Jemmott was elected
Miss Hampton for 1977-1978. Her project was to secure funds for the
King Street Community Center. Dr. Jemmott served as a Student Lead-
er from 1976-1978 under the late Dr. Greer Wilson and was inducted
into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Theta Chapter. She
continued her studies and earned a MSN in Psychiatric Mental Health
Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania in 1982 and a PhD in Educa-
tion, specializing in Human Sexuality in 1987. Dr. Loretta Sweet
Jemmott is one of the nation’s foremost psychiatric health nurse behavioral scientists in the
field of HIV risk-reduction research. She has led the nation in understanding the psychological
determinants for reducing risk-related behaviors among African American and Latino youth and
women. Dr. Jemmott has partnered with community-based organizations, including churches,
clinics, and schools, to effectively translate and disseminate her research into prevention pro-
grams.
Dr. Jemmott is a globally recognized
translational nurse researcher. Her work
has resulted in the national dissemina-
tion and translation of three of her evi-
dence-based HIV risk-reduction curric-
ula by the National Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health as model
curricula in their “Programs That
Work” initiative. Dr. Jemmott is an in-
ternationally renowned scholar, having
been invited by the National Institutes
of Health to serve as a U.S. Delegate to
South Africa to help develop HIV risk-reduction research initiatives. This resulted in an NIH-
funded HIV risk-reduction study for South African youth. Dr. Jemmott’s research has changed
public policy as it relates to the use of theory driven, culturally appropriate, evidenced-based
HIV risk-reduction interventions in community settings. She has presented her research to the
U.S. Congress at an HIV Prevention Briefing and at the NIH’s Consensus Development Con-
ference on Interventions to Reduce HIV Risk Behaviors.
Dr. Jemmott has received numerous prestigious awards for her significant contribution to the
nursing profession, field of HIV prevention research, and global community. Two such honors,
the U.S. Congressional Merit Award and membership in the Institute of Medicine, are acco-
lades accorded very few nurses. Dr. Jemmott's family was selected as the Honored Black Fami-
ly during the 2011 Annual Conference on the Black Family.
She is married to Dr. John B. Jemmott, III, and has two children, Jolie and Juliane.

The School of Nursing is an integral unit of Hampton University and shares its goals and ideals
of excellence in the teaching-living-learning process. Nursing education at Hampton University
began with the Hampton Training School for Nurses in 1891. At the turn of the century,
Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and Dixie Hospital (now Sentara CarePlex)
partnered to offer premier nursing education and health care for Peninsula residents. Since
1944, the nursing faculty at Hampton University has provided high-quality professional nursing
education at the bachelor of science degree level. This undergraduate program has the
distinction of being the oldest baccalaureate nursing program in the Commonwealth. In 1976,
Hampton University instituted a master of science degree program in nursing, making Hampton
the first historically black college and university (HBCU) to offer a master's degree in nursing.
In 1999, the School of Nursing achieved another distinction when Hampton University
instituted a PhD nursing program, the first at a HBCU. The School of Nursing operates a
mobile unit as a Nursing Center to serve as a practice arena. The Center for Minority Family
Health serves as the research arm of the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing is approved
by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing
Accrediting Commission and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
School of Nursing HAMPTON UNIVERSITY
Each new graduate is eligible to receive the Hampton University School of Nursing pin, which symbolizes the transition from student to nurse.
The School of Nursing’s pin is a representation of the middle of
the Hampton University seal. The official seal was accepted in
1875 and only the name has changed as Hampton has evolved
from the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute to
Hampton Institute to Hampton University.
The symbols on the seal and the pin are a plow and sheaths of
grain; books of knowledge surmounted by a globe of the world;
a bible stand; and, an old-fashioned printing press. The sunrise
over Hampton Creek symbolizes the rise of educational
opportunities, and the boat on the water symbolizes the
principal medium of transportation to Hampton during its early
history.

THE HAMPTON UNIVERSITY
Dear Seniors- What a journey it has been over the past three years. We have groomed you, pruned you and even scolded you at times so that you would become the best nurses you can be. Take all the pearls of wisdom you have received during your matriculation, sprout wings and soar like eagles. There are no limitations to what you will accomplish or become. Much success to you in your future endeavors. Take boards within the next 21 days and INFLAMMATION is the root of everything. Mrs. Shevellanie Lott, MSN, RN Chairperson, Department of Undergraduate Nursing Education

Hermionne Johnson
I’ve worked hard for many years.
Through God I have faced my fears,
And through family I have felt care.
I thank all of my friends, just for being there.
Only a few know what I have been through last year.
But by the grace of God, I finally made it here;
To graduate a Lady Pirate with my distinguished peers.
As I walk in my robe with pride underneath the sun’s glare,
I pray that we all remember to
LIVE, LOVE and SHARE
