PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Lou Bono,SWS President

2

Lou Bono2018 - 2019 PresidentSouthwestern Watercolor [email protected], 469-744-7559

It is hard to believe but we have reached the end of a memorable membership year. I had the honor of partnering with a terrific team and we did a great job together!

The May 14th Fundraiser was the culminating ac-complishment for this year and exceeded our expec-tations through the hard work of Pam Wilson and her outstanding team. We raised $5,200 that will support the September Membership Exhibition and our operating budget. The event went exceedingly well! I am sorry I was not able to attend, since I was in Lucca, Italy for a wonderful workshop with Jim Richards. A great group of urban sketchers and watercolor artists from the US, Australia and New Zealand attended. I returned home on Sunday, May 19 and am savoring the afterglow of a memorable art and cultural ex-perience visiting and sketching the UNESCO world cultural towns of Lucca, Pietrasanta, San Gimignano, Barga, Viareggio and Portovenere.

I am excited to continue a second term as SWS President for 2019-2020 with talented officers and pro-gram chairs, which are a great mix of new faces and prior experienced board members. The Exhibition Committee, led by Regina Carl, has been working hard for months and the preparations are going well for another great Exhibition.

Over the summer hiatus, we take a couple of months off while members vacation and the Board finalizes plans. The only planned summer event is the Exhibition Preview Party, showing all images submitted on Café for Juror, Vlad Yeliseyev. The Preview Party will be Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Royal Lane Baptist Church from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, with an intermission for refreshments and visiting. Everyone is invited. A reminder will be emailed about 2 weeks prior.

Please keep checking our website for the latest news because the website will be updated but the SCENE newsletter will take a break. Members will be receiving the newsletter again in early September.

Read about all our activities and plans in this newsletter and see the list of all the people who are dedicat-ing their time and talents to make Southwestern Watercolor Society such a terrific organization.

Enjoy your summer!

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT

Gail Cooksey

3

SWS member Gail Cooksey is the owner of a successful PR and Mar-keting firm by day, and a watercolor artist by night. She is hoping to switch that formula by the end of the year as she transitions into semi-retirement and can spend more time on her painting.

Gail got hooked on watercolor 15 years ago when she took a continuing education watercolor class at North Lake College in Irving, where her office is located. Instructor Arthur Guerra taught her the fundamentals of watercolor, himself a student of Edgar Whitney. She liked the class so much she kept repeating it for many years until Arthur retired.

As she sought more education and inspiration for her watercolor, she found SWS and a new world opened. She began taking workshops and soon be-came a “serial” workshop student. Her first workshop was with Mel Stabin, an internationally known teacher, author and award-winning watercolorist. “I was terrified of him, until I finally made him laugh,” she says.

Her greatest inspirations have come from Sterling Edwards and Jean Haines. “Sterling is the most wonderful instructor and has such a sense of humor! I’ve taken from him three times now.” She owns four of his original paintings.

Jean Haines proved to be a turning point in Gail’s watercolor journey, as she truly began to “feel” the painting and the life that comes from it. She

owns all of Jean’s books and has even traveled to Florida to take from Jean again. Recent workshops that have been especially beneficial for her in-clude Brenda Swenson, Ron Stocke, Richard Stephens, Keiko Tanabe and Andy Evanson.

As Gail enjoys traveling, she has started taking painting workshops around the world, including Cornwall, England, with Joyce Hicks; Italy with Betty Carr; and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, with Betty Carr. She is hoping to take a class with Brenda Swenson in France next year.

Within the last year, Gail has started travel journaling with watercolor, and she has found that to be a great way to combine travel and painting without the pressure to produce full paintings. “I enjoy doing quick ink sketches in the travel journal and adding paint and other memorabilia later. These jour-nals become the best memories of our trips.”

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT

4

Gail recently starting volunteering with SWS and will be the PR/Publicity committee chair for 2019-2020. She donated her firm’s creative director to design the logos for the May Fundraiser and the Membership Exhibition.

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Gail graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After working as a newspaper reporter for sev-eral years, she transitioned to corporate public relations and marketing, heading up those functions for several major banks in North Texas. Following a successful corporate career, she decided to start her own consulting business with just a few clients and a small executive suite in Dallas’ West End Historical District.

Today, Cooksey Communications employs 13 professionals and is cel-ebrating its 25th year in business this year. Cooksey Communications is consistently listed as one of the Top 10 PR Firms in Dallas, and Gail was recently named to the D CEO magazine’s Dallas 500 list of the

most powerful and influential business leaders in North Texas. Her firm has three times been named one of the Top 100 Small Businesses in the United States by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“We specialize in issues-related communications for government/economic development, transpor-tation, water, energy and education clients, and strategic communications for professional services, commercial real estate/development, retail/hospitality/consumer and nonprofit clients.” In addition, the firm has expanded to include a full-service creative services department.

Gail lives in Colleyville with her husband of 35 years, Robert, and their two dogs: Jacques, a 12-year-old Papillon who was rescued from a puppy mill; and Chloe, an 8-month-old Yorkie who was a Christ-mas gift last year.

Her goals for her watercolor? To enter more competitions (she recently had two paintings accepted into the Trinity Arts Guild Open Invitational) and of course take more workshops! And her proudest accomplishment is that she won her first award for a painting in the Trinity Arts Guild Member Invita-tional. “A pig. A painting of a pig that I did one Sunday very quickly because it’s The Year of the Pig. Go figure that would be the one that would win!”

SWS Fundraiser WAS the Best Ever!

See images of many of the paintings offered in the raffle and for auction athttp://www.swswatercolor.org/xPDFs/2019/Fundraiser-Paintings.pdf

The May Membership Meeting, started at 6:00 instead of 7:00 pm to provide plenty of time for all the evening’s activities. The event had been promoted as the “Biggest SWS May Event Ever”, and it lived up to the promises.

The annual fundraising event in May is held in lieu of the May Mem-bership Meeting and the proceeds are used to pay for awards at the upcoming Membership Show. Generous awards increase the number of artists who will enter and the level of competition as well as the re-

wards for the competitors. We offer more than $8000 worth of prizes each year, of which $5,000 - $6,000 are paid in cash awards. The money collected at the annual fundraiser pays for a significant portion of the cash awards. The SWS major awards include

Best of Show $1500.00 Edgar A. Whitney $1000.00 (for transparent watercolor only) 1st Place $750.00 2nd Place $500.00 3rd Place $300.00

plus memorial awards for deceased members.

In the last year, we have lost two long-time mem-bers, Marilynn (Lynn) Wilson and Bryce Wiegand, and accumulated amounts honoring a particular person in excess of $250 will result in an award named to honor that person. Lesser amounts will be collected into an SWS Memorial Award to honor the memory of all deceased members. In addition to cash show awards, there will be a gen-erous number of vendor merchandise awards.

This year’s spectacular event resulted from the hard work of a large committee of committed volunteers who planned the schedule, provided staffing and refreshments and solicited more than two dozen paintings and countless other new and gently used art supplies, books and materials. All that hard work earned us over 72% more this year

than we did at the 2018 Fundraiser. More than 100 people were in attendance.

Approximately 60% of our earnings were made in the silent auction. This year, we added small origi-nal art pieces to the silent auction and this was a beneficial decision since this year’s silent auction earned income equal to all of last year’s fundraiser. The live auction and raffle each contributed

twenty percent of the funds earned this year. This year’s live auction included eight paint-ings of less than half sheet size from very talented SWS mem-bers and from work-shop artists from the

United Kingdom, Utah, and from the Pacific Northwest. All of the artists whose works were auctioned are acclaimed professionals.

The expanded raffle included chances to win one of 11 prizes, including three original watercolor paintings from our well-loved founder Naomi Brotherton, gift certificates for Asel Art and Aaron Brothers Framing, free registration to the Janet Rogers October workshop or the Stephen Quiller November workshop, entry fees for the SWS Exhibition, and dues for two years. With all of these terrific opportunities, the event was a great success Thank you to all the great people who contributed!
