Principal’s Message Monday 27 November 2017

Dear Families and Friends, The last few weeks have been very busy at the College with events occurring during the school day and after hours. We were delighted to welcome the Parent Association to a gathering in recognition of the contribution they have made to the College over the last twelve months. A lovely evening was had by all.

The Women of Windsor gathered at the College on Sunday 19th of November to remember their years at PCW and to commemorate 100 years of the Chapel. Their love of the College is unfaltering and the enthusiasm with which they sing their “old” School Song brings tears to the eyes. These extraordinary women are led by Andre Moloney and Marie Curlis who worked with the committee in developing the program for the day. The guest speaker, Dr Elizabeth Farrell, AM (Class of 1964) was highly inspirational as she drew relevant links from the past and compared them with the current situation for women in the workforce today.

At PCW, we remain committed to providing students with as many opportunities for achieving success in their learning as possible so this year we decided to extend our end of year orientation program, which has previously been reserved for senior students, by including all classes from 7 – 11, in a Head Start Program. Each level of students has moved into their 2018 classes to get a Head Start on the following year’s course work. A huge amount of planning has been done by teachers to ensure that the courses students are undertaking are challenging, engaging and relevant.

Two of our Year 12 students have been selected for Excellence Awards and it is with great pleasure that I announce these here. Pascale Latras has been chosen as one of eight recipients of iVET's, VET in School

Excellence Awards. This is a significant acknowledgement for Pascale as there were 600 applicants! Congratulations also to Monique Abboud on receiving an Academic Excellence Award in Visual Communication & Design from Distance Education Centre Victoria. Monique will receive her award at the 2017 Awards Day held at the Performing Arts Centre at Ivanhoe Grammar on Friday 15th December.

Since the last edition of the Lantern, we have welcomed our Year 7 students of 2018, celebrated the Year 9 Learning Expo with Parents, run a Leadership Training Day for Year 9 students, and run and completed all exams. It has indeed been a busy time for all at the College. Last Friday, students from PCW and CBC set off with their teachers on the trip to Italy where they met up with our Principal, Filina Virgato. They will visit many sites, be immersed in a homestay experience, study in Florence and attend school in Bologna. We wish all teachers and students safe and happy travels. I have included a few photos in this edition of the Lantern too.

As we approach Advent, a period of waiting and preparing, we think of those in our community for whom this period is particularly challenging. The shops are filled with lights, Christmas trees, and gifts of every variety but we recognize that this is not what the joy of Christmas is about. We continue to encourage our teachers and students to bring in items that will go towards making someone else’s Christmas experience a little more special.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Carols next week, on the 7th of December, and invite you to join the singing and celebrations.

‘Remembering’

In November the Church dedicates the month to pray for those who have gone before us. It is a month of

remembering and celebrating those who are part of our life, our tradition and our faith.

On All Saints Day we pray together in celebrating and remembering the examples of so many people

throughout time, men, women and children, both named and un-named, who believed in a compassionate and

loving God and in a mission that would transform the world. We give thanks for their example of love, courage

and faith; we celebrate their life, we pray for and with them and we too remember that we are called to be saints

in our own life.

On All Souls Day we prayerfully remember our loved ones who have died and those in our community who are

grieving. We give thanks for our memories of them and for the love they gave us. We pray for their eternal rest

and ask God to embrace them in his love.

Both days were celebrated with special Homeroom Liturgies. The school community was invited to light a candle

for those who had passed away and their names were written into the Book of Souls.

November is also the month in which we remember all those who have died in war.

Remembrance Day on the 11th November is a time when we come together to remember in faith all who have

served, and continue serving in our armed forces, especially those who have died and those wounded in battle.

We also pray for healing and peace; that one day all peoples will lay down their arms and embrace one another

as brothers and sisters in one human family.

A special Homeroom Liturgy was held and members of the classroom were asked to place flowers in a wreath as

a symbol of respect, reverence and remembrance for all those affected by war past and present.

Director of Faith & Mission Women of Windsor Celebration

On Sunday 19th November we remembered our past history as a College by celebrating our Alumnae Day with a

liturgy, past student guest speaker and an afternoon tea. As we gathered in the Chapel we remembered those who

came before us; the sisters whose names are on the walls and those who called the convent home. We

acknowledged and expressed our thanks to each one of our alumnae. They have taken the education received here

at the College and used it to bring hope and healing to this world. As a Presentation Community we continue to be

Nano’s lantern that lights up the dark and brings the lantern flame of faith, hope and love to our family, friends and

to all those we encounter in life.

The liturgy was completed by Sr. Mary Kavannah talking to us about the history of the Chapel, 100 years this month.

The chapel has always been the centre of prayer and reflection for our Presentation community and has a very

special place in our hearts.

In acknowledging and celebrating this milestone in the Chapel’s history, Presentation College Windsor will mark this

event with the placement of a stone water fountain. The water fountain will be placed at the entrance to the Chapel

and serve as a living water for those that enter this sacred place. Sr. Nola Vanderfeen was invited to turn over the

soil in a symbolic action, to mark the place of the water fountain in commemoration of 100 years in the Chapel’s

history.

Year 7 Retreat

On the 3rd November the last of the year level retreats for 2017 was held at the Salesian Centre in Lysterfield.

The focus of the Year 7 Retreat was on contemplative prayer. In the stillness and silence of mind and body the

students were able to participate in a number of workshops for personal prayer, reflection and meditation. The

workshops included Christian meditation, mindfulness and an environmental pilgrimage. The focus this year was

gratitude and the girls were able to share three things they are grateful for as part of the forth workshop. This

included making a gratitude box which will be used on their final day. I’d like to thank the students for their

positive and responsive way they participated in the day and the RE and homeroom teachers for their support in

the planning and implementation of this experience for our students.

Student Reflections

At the beginning of November all Year 7s went on retreat. The day was very fun

and we participated in many activities, such as mindfulness, mediation and

walks. As we took a ‘retreat’ from our normal school day we took the time to

notice how grateful and appreciative we are for simple everyday things. All of the

girls brought food to share with their group of friends. It was a good day to

reflect on our year and the friendships we have made. Overall everybody enjoyed

the fun-filled day in the country. Thanks to our teachers for giving us this

opportunity.

On Friday 3rd of November, all Year 7s went on retreat to Lysterfield. We did four

different activities, one of those was meditation. We meditated for a few minutes

and I think a few of us may have fallen asleep. The next activity was colouring in,

the teachers had provided two big colouring sheets and the end results were

pretty interesting. The third activity was a gratitude activity, where we talked

about what we have and what we are grateful for. The final activity was a walk

and as we walked around we continued to stop and appreciate the amazing land,

nature and animals around us. All up, the Year 7 Retreat was so much fun and we

all learnt so much from it! Rose Blackhall, 7 Blue

On Friday 3rd of November, Year 7s went on a retreat to Lysterfield. When we

first arrived, 7 Blue presented a very peaceful opening prayer to get us started for

the day. We then moved into our groups and split off to do activities that relaxed

us and gave us some time to think, reflect, pray and appreciate our surroundings,

without any social media or other distractions. We did this by meditating,

colouring, sharing our valued things in our lives and a calming walk. To conclude

our day, 7 Gold lead a meaningful prayer that included thoughts on what we are

grateful for in our lives, what we appreciate most and what blessings God has

It is hard to believe we are over half way through November. We are reminded that Christmas is around the corner with decorations appearing in shops and streets. This also means that the end of the school year is fast approaching. During this month as a community we show our appreciation and gratitude to those who are no longer with us as we mark All Saints Day, All Souls Day and Remembrance Day.

As always College life at PCW continues to be busy and enriching. The VCE exam season for students studying a Unit ¾ subject ends this week. Thank you to Ms Semertjis, our VCE Coordinator, for her thorough organisation and for ensuring all requirements were met in administering this year’s exams. We wish our Year 12 students a relaxing and safe break before they embark on their next exciting journey in 2018. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have also completed their end of year exams. It is timely to acknowledge all our teachers who have supported and encouraged our students as they have prepared for these exams and other assessments throughout the semester. Your work and dedication is very much appreciated. The Head Start program for students in Years 7 to 11 commenced on Monday 20 November. This is a great opportunity for our girls to start work on their 2018 subjects. Thank you to all staff who are involved in this program.

On Sunday 19 November I had the pleasure of attending the Alumnae Association’s annual ‘Women of Windsor’ event. It was so lovely to see many past students of the College in attendance from varying graduation years. As I drove home I thought to myself that those who were in the graduating class of 1950 would have had a different educational experience from what our young women experience today at PCW. It was so lovely that the alumnae still remember our old school song and sang it with much passion and gusto, showing the strong connection they still have to our wonderful school. As we celebrate our College alumnae, on Friday 17 November we also welcomed our new Year 7 students for 2018. We pray that our new students have a smooth and enjoyable transition from primary school into secondary school.

Access to the portal

At this time of the term it is appropriate to remind parents to regularly check the portal for feedback on assessment tasks. We are fortunate to have a very comprehensive portal which allows teachers to post feedback and for parents and students to access this information at any time.

Art Assembly

On Wednesday 1 November we joined together as a College community to recognise our art students during the art assembly. Congratulations to Ms Mackey and the team of art teachers for organising and leading this assembly. This was a great forum to recognise the many artistic talents of our girls. I commend our girls for their talents and commitment to their academic studies.

2017 Italy Tour

We continue to wish our students and staff from PCW and CBC who departed on the College’s Italy Tour on Friday 24 November a very safe and enjoyable time. I hope the experience further unlocks your passion for the Italian language and culture.

Year 9 Presentation Evening

Thank you to Ms Braiden for organising the Year 9 Presentation Evening on Thursday 16 November. This was a wonderful evening to showcase the work our Year 9 students have completed throughout the year in the Eachtra program. I was very pleased to present certificates to acknowledge the high achieving students in each subject at Year 9 for this year. The DUX of Year 9 will be announced at the Academic Excellence Awards Assembly in Term 1, 2018.

2018 Japan Study Tour Expressions of Interest

Interested students and their parents are invited to complete the form here to indicate their interest in participating in the College’s 2018 Japan Study Tour. We plan to combine this tour with CBC. The tour is planned to occur in September. The tour is open to all students in Years 9 to 11 who will be studying Japanese in 2019. Interested students will be asked to write an application and a number of criteria will need to be met for eligibility.

This experience gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in, and develop a greater awareness and understanding of the language and culture of Japan. The tour will involve a homestay as well as travel to various locations around Japan including Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima. We aim to keep costs to a minimum.

I hope the above information will assist you in making a decision about whether your daughter will be part of the Japan Tour in 2018 and I invite you to attend the Information Evening to be held in early Term 1.

Year 9 Leadership Training Day

Thank you to Ms Tommasini for organising and presenting the Year 9 Leadership Training Day. This day was full of a variety of activities that explored what it means to be a leader. I was most impressed by the many thoughtful contributions the girls made throughout the day and their willingness to participate in all the different activities.

In the past fortnight I had the opportunity to hear a lecture given by Dr Jordan Nguyen, a biomedical engineer and inventor who has featured on ABC’s Catalyst program who created a mind-controlled wheelchair. He spoke about the promise of technology and how it could be used to maximum positive global impact and the role of globalization in the development of technology.

In the MYP, the context for learning is placed in authentic real world settings. In each unit of work, the teaching team select a ‘global context’ which helps to foster international mindedness and helps students to think about how what they are learning about connects with the world community.

This thinking is underpinned by the work of Boix-Mansilla and Gardner (2007), who assert that when students encounter world cultures, landscapes and beliefs in their daily learning, it situates them in a broader more meaningful and connected context of which they feel part of. Given the rise of globalisation and our ever shrinking world, the MYP encourages teachers to create units which link in with what is going on in the world right now and for students to identify with and be aware of current events. At Presentation College, this means that students are challenged not only to understand globalization, but to be critical in its appraisal and limitations and to make responsible choices, live justly and make the world a better place for themselves and the wider world. The following are a list of the MYP Global contexts adapted from MYP Principles to Practices. Throughout their MYP journey at the College, students will be learning and using each of these perspectives.

Presentation Evening

The Presentation Evening ran on from the Learning Expo and the majority of parents were in attendance. This formal

awards ceremony celebrated the students’ many successes and acknowledged this important milestone in their

educational journey – that of moving from the Middle School to the Senior School. All students were presented with a

certificate and the beautiful 2017 EACHTRA badge (designed by Juliana Neild) and the following awards were announced.


Year 9 News

Wellsprings for Women

The Year 9 Class Captains visited Wellsprings for Women recently and gained much from the experience. To raise funds for this fantastic, supportive organisation they held a Bake Sale at the College. This was very successful and enjoyed by all.

Exams

The Year 9 students are to be congratulated on the excellent manner in which they prepared and conducted themselves

during their end of year exams. Most students organized themselves by preparing a folder of notes and resources and

there were many flip cards being used! During the exams they remained focused and tried their best. This experience will

assist them to develop their exam skills for their Senior Years.

Learning Expo

On Thursday 26 October, the students worked in small groups to develop a presentation on one of the Year 9 experiences

they had this year. In all, there were 30 presentations and these showcased the camps, Community Service and a range of

other educational activities. There were bags and pouches depicting the students’ reactions to homelessness for sale. All

proceeds will be donated to St Vinnies. The presentations this year were exceptional and the students presented to their

parents on Thursday evening. The feedback was very positive, citing the students were very knowledgeable and confident.

Bridie Wilcox was the recipient of the Spirit of Nano Award. This special award recognizes the student who embodies the

spirit of Nano, one who, like the oak tree depicted on the trophy, spreads her shelter, who goes one step beyond and

understands the true meaning of “not words, but deed.”

On Friday 17th November the Year 9 cohort took part in a leadership training afternoon. This program is designed to prepare the students for the leadership opportunities presented to them in Year 10. These leadership opportunities include Peer Support Program mentors and Windsor (Stonnington) Primary School mentors.

Students were introduced to leadership throughout periods 3 and 4. The cohort participated in some practical and theoretical activities, discussions and reflection tasks. The Year 9 cohort were challenged to explore bosses versus leaders, qualities of good and bad leaders and the benefits of leadership. Students also looked at how they would deal with difficult and challenging behavior in and out of the classroom.

After the activities concluded, students could nominate whether they would like to be involved in the Peer Support, Windsor Program or both at Presentation College Windsor in 2018. Students will be notified before the end of the school year.

For the past few years, iVET has been giving individual VET students across the state the opportunity to be recognised for their hard work and dedication.

This year an excess of 600 applicants applied for the Excellence Awards and iVET had to choose only eight students to receive this scholarship.

I am delighted to announce that Pascale Latras has been chosen as a 2017 recipient of this award, for her ongoing commitment and dedication in VCE VET Business.

I know that Pascale will do well in whatever field she chooses and I look forward to following her career.

Career News

Year 10 Work Experience for 2018

Recently, I introduced the Year 9 students to how Work Experience works in Year 10. I followed this up with information in an email to both them and their parents but thought I would also provide a brief overview in this addition of the Lantern.

Work Experience is an optional co-curricular activity that I would encourage all Year 10s to complete next year. It gives them a chance to experience the world of work and have a taste of a job/career that might interest them in the future. Also, in the future it is highly likely that most universities will be looking at the whole person and not always only the ATAR in their selection process and participating in a variety of co-curricular activities, including work experience, could be a great advantage.

The proposed blocks of time for next year, in which the Year 10s will be able to choose their week, will be:

Term 2: May 7th to 25th 2018

Term 3: July 30th to August 17th 2018

Term 4: October 8th to 26th 2018

It is never too early to start thinking, planning and organising work experience. Some places such as the Police and Zoos have already closed and selected their applicants and others may have already or be about to start their applications for next year. Utilise the contacts you may have to help find an appropriate placement.

Information about work experience can be found on the portal’s Pathways Wiki under the Work Experience Tab. As information and forms are updated for 2018 they will be added to this.

New Government Resource: Beyond School Study Guide

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has produced the Beyond School study guide. The Guide is a digital resource for year 10-12 students providing information about Australian Government assistance so they are able to make informed choices about their future studies. The resources include:

Three tertiary education explainer infographics:

1. Higher education or VET? – Provides information about each sector so that students can understand what type/level of qualification they may need to get to the career they want.

2. Pathways to university – Provides examples of ways that students can access higher education (e.g. bridging course; VET/sub-bachelor studies; ATAR) and points them to apply for uni via their relevant TAC.

3. Choose your own higher education adventure – A flow chart for higher education students to select options that apply to them and find which HELP loan is most suitable for their study choices.

One HELP loan comparison ‘cheat sheet’ – a table to compare each different loan and provide information about when a student might access each one.

Five fact sheets – one for each of the four HELP loan schemes (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP, SA-HELP) and one for

the VET Student Loans program, that provide basic information about each.

Parents of Year 12 students please find important information below with regards to the next stages for you daughters; the release of results and tertiary offers via VTAC. This time can be one of anticipation and excitement but also sometimes disappointment. It is important to be prepared with a back up plan if results are not quite what was hoped for or expected.

Please advise your daughters to keep checking their school email for information forwarded on by me from VTAC. I wish them all the best for the upcoming exams and then some fun and well-deserved R and R after a busy year of hard work.

VCE Results and ATAR

Once results are released, if you find that you have not met the prerequisites (subject study score or minimum ATAR) for the courses that you have applied, then you may need to change your preferences or add a backup pathway plan. I will be available on the morning of December 15th and early into the following week for consultation should you need to discuss your future pathway or change of preference. Please email or ring me after 8am on 8517 2726 to arrange an appointment.

Change of Preference (COP)

The main thing to remember with change of preference is that you put them in order of what you really want (regardless of ATAR) and that you have met all the selection criteria as outlined in the VTAC guide.

* You can change course preferences as many times as you like while Change of Preference is open.

* Once you have your ATAR consider:

Your order of preferences –think about what you really want to do and where you want to go most

Add any backup course options (make sure you satisfy the course requirements!)

Make use of all 8 preferences: very popular courses may have filled all places in Round 1

Get your preferences in and correct by 4pm December 15th for International students and by 12 noon December 20th for domestic students.

If you have received a lower ATAR than expected did you opt in to receive Supplementary Offers when you registered? If not, then you may want to opt in now!

Preferences can be changed between all rounds (but it does close for a short time before each offer round)

Offers - ALWAYS ACCEPT an offer!

Even if you are hoping for a higher preference offer in a later round, you should accept any offer you receive

You are automatically considered for any higher preferences in future offer rounds

80% of offers are made in Round 1

There is no guarantee of receiving another offer in a later round

Courses are not required to participate in subsequent rounds

If you receive another offer in a later round, you can withdraw from the earlier offer then

Verbal offers have no status. If you receive a verbal offer you should ask for the name of the person making the offer and contact VTAC immediately.

Responding to an offer: Accept, Defer, Reject

Receiving an offer does not confirm your enrolment in the course. To secure your place, you must follow the enrolment instructions in your offer message. In some cases you may be required to attend enrolment in person on a specific date and time.

To accept an offer, follow the instructions in the offer advice to enrol at the institution.

No separate acceptance notification to VTAC is needed.

If you can't attend enrolment or are unable to attend at the specified time you should check with the institution whether an authorised nominee (someone you choose) can enrol on your behalf.

To reject an offer, take no action.

The offer will automatically lapse if you have not enrolled by the deadline

Supplementary Offers

Not yet received an offer after Round 2 and you have given permission, then institutions will contact you directly to suggest courses which still have vacancies

Supplementary offers will commence after Round 2, and be formalised in the next offer round

Opt in by the deadline, opt out at anytime – this is done by updating your personal details you filled in initially and answering the question: Do you want to participate in the supplementary offer process

Supplementary offers will be processed weekly.

If you receive two or more offers at the same time, you will need to choose which offer to accept-you should not accept more than one offer.
