People throw things away every

day. This is called trash. Trash is

thrown into a trash can. Every week

a garbage truck picks up the trash

and takes it away. But FIRST! Let’s

stop the garbage truck and think!

Let’s follow the garbage truck and

fi nd out! The truck drives to a special

place. It carries the trash to the landfi ll.

A landfi ll is a large hole in the ground.

Garbage trucks dump trash into the hole.

A landfi ll hole has a thick plastic liner

between the trash and the ground. This

liner keeps the waste from the trash

from getting into the water in the ground.

Trash is dumped until it covers

the bottom of the hole. Then trucks

dump dirt over the trash. Trash and

dirt is dumped over each other again

and again. The piles of trash and

dirt get higher until the hole is fi lled.

When a landfi ll is full, a fi nal

thick layer of dirt covers the trash.

Then a special layer of dirt covers

the very top. The special dirt on top

is good for growing grass and trees.

The trash in the ground will slowly

break down. Some trash takes longer to

break down than others. But over time

the trash will become part of the ground.

Landfi lls are becoming full and

we are running out of space. We

need the extra space for farms,

houses, roads, buildings and more!

Some trash can be recycled. Trash

made out of paper, plastic, metal or glass

can be recycled. That means it can be

changed into something new. Recycling

can save us space. Think about recycling

the next time you throw away trash.
