THE LAMB of GOD
“Behold the Lamb of God!” We hear this
phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there’s a
good chance that many Roman Catholics do
not know who in the Bible originally spoke it.
The phrase appears only in the Gospel of
John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who
utters it twice. In today’s Gospel reading,
John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God,
and two of John’s own disciples then follow
Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard
John and then followed Jesus, brings his
brother Simon to be re-named
Cephas, or Peter. A careful look
at these Bible verses shows us
the mission of everyone
baptized into the Body of Christ:
we must always proclaim our
faith in Christ, so that others will
follow him. We may not know
how the will of God might work
through those we bring to
Christ; that is not the point. The
point is that our ongoing mission
as a church is to bring others to
Christ, the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sin of the world.
Cristo. Un poco más tarde Andrés, quien
escuchó a Juan y siguió a Jesús, lleva a su
hermano Simón para que reciba un
nuevo nombre: Kefás, es decir
Pedro. Si estudiamos a fondo estos
versículos de la Biblia vemos la
misión de todos los bautizados en
el Cuerpo de Cristo: Siempre
debemos proclamar nuestra fe en
Cristo, para que otros lo sigan.
Quizás no sepamos de qué manera
la voluntad de Dios obrará en los
que llevamos a Cristo, pero eso no
es lo importante. Lo que importa es
que nuestra misión constante como
Iglesia es llevar a otras personas a
Cristo, el Cordero de Dios, que
quita el pecado del mundo.

“Speak, for your servant is listening.” With those few words Samuel humbles himself and declares his loyalty and obedience to God...Initially Samuel responds “Here I am,” but thinks it was Eli who called him. The idea of being a servant and the willingness to serve are what may be trials for us in terms of how we live.
Samuel does not recognize the voice of the Lord. That, too, may be a problem for us. First we need to be listening. Are we, or are we merely going through the motions? Responding to God with “Here I am” is a magnificent way to react to God. Of course God knows where we are, but saying “Here I am” serves as a reminder to us that we are stewards, disciples to Him, and we are prepared to hear what He wants us to do.
“Here I am” is said numerous times in the Old Testament including by Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Isaiah, and again by Ananias in the New Testament. When Jesus says, “Come follow me,” as He does to us, do we hear Him, and even more important do we respond...and do we follow?
“Listen to what God is saying to you in the music, through the readings, in the homily. Listen to the prayers of the Mass, and listen to the quiet of your heart.
When that one thing strikes you, write it in your Mass Journal.”

Dear Fr. Bill and my St. Francis family,
Thank you for the very warm send-off last weekend. I appreciate your kindness, well-wishes and prayers for a safe move and improved health for Gene. I’ll miss seeing you on a regular basis, but will be back periodically for work and look forward to seeing you during my visits. St. Francis is a unique and very special parish; it’s a loving and vibrant community of disciples dedicated to welcoming and helping others. I think of it as a piece of Heaven on Earth! I will forever be grateful for your love, support and ongoing prayers.
With prayers for peace and God’s blessings, Lisa and Gene Peltier
Food Pantry Update: Thank you all so much
for such for all the food items that have been
donated to Saint Francis of Assisi Food Pantry
(of Reno) in the past weeks. We have been
serving up to 820 families each month with food,
clothing, paper products, cleaning supplies,
hygiene products and pet food. Along with our
distribution, we like to have healthy food for
clients who are battling Cancer, COPD, diabetes
and high blood pressure, so that these clients can
pick healthier food for them and for their
families.
We always are in need of cans of chicken and
cans of tuna. This would help a lot. Thank you
all for your continued support!! - Cindy Becher

A Biblical Walk Through the Mass
Do you understand the meaning behind the parts of the Mass? For many, the Mass may at times seem almost too familiar. Each week we perform prayers and rituals that we learned years ago. But what do all these prayers and rituals mean?
Do we really understand the significance of all that we are saying and doing in the Liturgy? Are we able to explain the meaning to our children, families, and friends of other Christian denominations? One key to unlocking the mystery of the Mass is Scripture. Quotations and references to scriptural passages are found throughout the entire Liturgy. Therefore, the more we know about the biblical roots of the Mass, the more we may come to appreciate the splendor of the Liturgy and encounter our Lord more deeply at every Mass. We will also discover many beautiful personal treasures because the prayers and rituals of the Mass, when understood biblically, offer much inspiration, encouragement, and practical help for our lives as Christians.
If you would like to come to know the Mass as never before, please join us for A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, a video-based study, at St. Francis of Assisi. We will begin on Tuesday, January 16
th from 6:00 to
7:30 pm and continue every Tuesday evening for 5 weeks. For more information or to register for the study, please contact Anne Blamire via email at: [email protected], or by calling (775) 742-2352. Books will be available for purchase for $20 during our first session. Please be sure to bring your Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church to each class. Hope to see you there!

Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop
"The root of prayer is interior silence. We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is
only one expression. Deep prayer is the laying aside of thoughts. It is the opening of mind and heart, body and
feeling—our whole being—to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond words, thoughts and emotions." Open Mind
Open Heart, Fr. Thomas Keating
Centering Prayer is a gentle, silent method of consenting to God's presence and healing action within us. Based upon
the rich Christian contemplative heritage, Centering Prayer offers us a way to be open to God. By taking time to "rest
in God" each day, we open our awareness to the gift of God's presence. Come learn more about this prayer.

Stewardship & Community / Administración y Comunidad
Issues of Peace and Justice: “Here I am Lord; I come to do your will.”
We pray this today, and perhaps more regularly in our lives. Sometimes the
world’s needs overwhelm us, and we don’t know where to begin to help.
Sometimes we are most unaware of the world’s needs. In either case, this prayer
is what can get us living our Christian beliefs.
Pope Francis has been a most clear guide for Christian involvement in the world,
and currently he asks us to focus on the migration crisis of our globe. The
UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency) states there are 65.6 million forcibly displaced
people worldwide). “We know that it is not enough to open our hearts to the
suffering of others. Much more remains to be done before our brothers and sisters
can once again live peacefully in a safe home. Welcoming others requires concrete commitment, a
network of assistance and goodwill, vigilant and sympathetic attention, the responsible management
of new and complex situations that at times compound numerous existing problems, to say nothing
of resources, which are always limited. By practicing the virtue of prudence, government leaders
should take practical measures to welcome, promote, protect, integrate and, ‘within the limits
allowed by a correct understanding of the common good, to permit [them] to become part of a new
society’” (51st World Day of Peace Message of His Holiness Pope Francis, #1).

MARRIED COUPLES – Consider doing something great for yourselves and your marriage. A Marriage Encounter weekend involves 15 – 20 couples. A series of presentations are given by a team of Catholic couples and a priest. The focus of the weekend is the couple, not group sessions. The presentations allow each couple a rare opportunity to look at themselves as individuals, then to look at their marriage and relationship to each other, and finally to look at their relationship to God, the church, and the world. After each presentation, the husband and wife have time in the privacy of their room for their own personal discussion.
