H ere I sit just as humble as can be giving quiet thanks for the small things... simple things in life. I say humble because I just wrestled the outside back door to my home for a few hours trying to install a new weather strip on the bottom edge which involved having to re-hang the son of a gun to get it to close properly. The job took two trips to the hardware store (note: not Walmart - hardware, a real hardware store where advice comes with patient smiles for the inept but willing “do-it- yourselfer”) and a deep dive into my

thesaurus to concoct a few suitable curses for the nicks and inevitable bloodletting that occurred before I finally asked a neighbor for a hand. We finished the job in record time and sat down to a bit of bread, cheese and wine. Like I said... quiet thanks for the small things. It’s always funny to me (funny - peculiar) the way life lessons come spilling into my glass and how sometimes I feel so big, strong and in control only to find in the end that it’s the commerce with others that gives me any real feeling of accomplishment at all. It’s all about sharing; as in music, as in food, as in family, as in work. Sharing a task makes the load lighter. Sharing points out our interdependence and allows us to give thanks for that web of community that allows us to all rise together. There is a lot of talk of hard times, recession and global economic contraction (sounds ominous, huh?) and how things are going to change. I think I will give thanks for change too... small changes. Isn’t that how we learn and how we do complex tasks? From fixing a door to attacking a big pile of dishes after a holiday dinner the goal is accomplished by (as Bill Murray said in the movie “What about Bob?”) baby steps! So here’s to small changes and thanks to all of you who make this place a little better in these times we live in

(be they hard, soft, fast or good). Thanks for leaning to your strength and thanks for sharing a bit of what you have with the rest of us.

Small changes in the moon are never seen by the clouds as they peak and hide The small changes in the moon are felt by waves of the weakest tide Small changes in the moon whisper secrets in the dark and to the stars confide The joining and the leaving, the joy and the grieving The balance that might sway and commune To become small changes in the moon

Fondue, Fondue I n the sixties, having ‘fondue parties’ was all the rage. Nearly every bride’s gift list [in those days there were not many bridal registries] included a fondue pot. Once or twice a month, young marrieds would make a round of phone calls to invite their neighbors. They shopped for their groceries at the local IGA and would gather around a dining room table to catch up on news, share some melted cheese with crispy bread and quaff a bottle or two of beer. My mom has always said, ‘If you wait long enough, a trend will return.’ In this case, as in most others, her prediction has come true. Fondue pots and gatherings with cheesy dips and crispy breads have come back into fashion – with just a couple of variations in

format. So since Ohio is one of the nation’s premier producers of Swiss cheese, find a locally manufactured example and invite some friends [via e-mail] for a cozy evening and good conversation. And in this era, rather than picking up a case of ‘Bud’ plan to

select a couple bottles of northeast Ohio’s best Vidal Blanc wines to serve. Its soft sweetness and fresh fruit flavors will bring out all the best in the cheese. Vidal Blanc is one of the French-American hybrids widely planted by Ohio winemakers in the eighties and nineties to attract an emerging regional palate to some well make off-dry white wines. The hardy, large clustered grapes produce an aromatic wine that some connoisseurs compare to the better-known vigonier. It grows well in our cool climate

and is hardy enough to survive all but the most severe of winters. Its hardy nature also makes it an ideal grape in the production of those luscious Ohio Ice Wines. The finished table wine from Vidal Blanc is delightful – and appeals to a wide range of wine lovers – from the most experienced to those very new to the world of wine so it is a perfect wine to serve with an eclectic group of friends.

Here is a very simple fondue recipe to use: 4 cups of grated Swiss Cheese [about a pound] 1 T. flour 1 clove garlic 1 ½ cups Vidal Blanc 3 T. dry sherry Dash of freshly ground pepper Dash of freshly ground nutmeg A couple of loaves of French Bread

Toss the cheese in the flour. Rub the inside of the pot with a cut garlic clove. Warm the wine until bubbles gently rise. Slowly add grated cheese until it is all blended. Add the pepper and nutmeg. Stir in the sherry. Use long kabob skewers to tip the bread. Pour the wine into chilled glasses. Add a tossed salad if you like [maybe with a Vidal dressing?]. A trend come full circle.

8 November 19 - December 3, 2008

By Don Perry

D id anyone notice anything different on Election Night “08”? As I watched the news coverage that evening, I was impressed by the mood on the streets across the country. It was like watching a New Years Eve celebration. I cannot recall anything like that in previous elections. I’m happy to have been part of such a proud moment in our nation’s history. Though I must admit, that I wouldn’t want to face the huge task that lies ahead for Mr. Obama. Let’s hope that he and our other elected officials can work together to reverse the direction that our economy has taken recently. It seems that over the last couple of years, the entire country has experienced events similar to what we in Northeastern Ohio have endured for many decades. Maybe the new administration should take a look at “The North Coast” and the people who live here. Through one economic downturn after another, the people of the Cleveland area just keep on pushing forward. In recent years, Cleveland has built The Science Museum, The Rock Hall and Three professional sports facilities. These are just the highly visible

improvements that have come to our area. Though one cannot help but notice the huge investments made to the medical facilities throughout Northern Ohio. Our health care providers are second to none. These multi million dollar businesses are not the only investors in our area. Countless small business men and women have found success in the Cleveland area, and I think that much could be learned from the “rebirth” of Cleveland. This brings me, (at long last), to the subject of Jazz. Brothers Lounge , located at 11609 Detroit Ave. has experienced a “rebirth” of its own and there is no shortage of Jazz music as Brothers begins the holiday season. Every Monday is Jazz Open Mic night in the Wine Bar section of the lounge, so if you’re in the

mood for some great entertainment or maybe you’d like to blow the cobwebs out of that horn, check out the jazz jam at Brothers Lounge. On Saturday, Nov. 22nd, The Baldwin Wallace Jazz Ensemble will perform at 8pm in Brother’s Music Hall. Tuesday Nov. 25th, Ernie Krivda and the Jazz All

Stars will take the Music Hall stage at 8pm. Also in the Music Hall on Nov.30th, “A tribute to Billie” featuring JazzZeejazz with the Eddie Baccus Sr. Quartet performing a blend of Jazz standards along with songs made famous by Billie Holiday.

With a musical menu such as this being served at Brothers Lounge, who needs turkey? Check out Brothers Lounge at www.brotherslounge.com for more information, and have a safe, happy holiday season.

9:00 til Midnight

T hat big yellow moon hung low in the sky, waxing toward the Full Mad Moon of November, on Monday the 10 th , as members of the Cleveland Blues Society gathered at Major Hoopple’s in the Flats, to discuss business. Norm Plonski’s Riverbed Café proved to be a great venue for the Society, whose slogan is “The Crossroads of Rust Belt Blues.” The vintage little neighborhood bar is backed by nine huge glass windows, with a great view of the rusty Columbus Road lift bridge in the foreground, and the illuminated skyline beyond that. Blue-collar patrons belly up to the long oak bar, which is well-stocked with bottled beer, drafts, and spirits. The small but busy kitchen, open til 11:00, puts out cheap eats ranging from typical bar food to pierogies and meatball sandwiches. Hoopples has a great jukebox, and Thursday is Blues Night with the legendary Schwartz brothers. If you haven’t seen Glenn Schwartz play his guitar, you really need to experience it just once. Schwartz, who was a founding member of the James Gang, was dubbed “the greatest guitar player in the world” by none other than the late Jimi Hendrix. (www.hoopples.com) Meeting agenda included a discussion of plans for the Society’s first fundraiser, a “Winter Blues Blast” to be held sometime in February or March 2009. The event would help to fund a late summer blues festival in Cleveland. Other ideas tossed around

include a Blues Hall of Fame, proposed by Bob Frank of Blue Lunch, and Vice President Marty Puljic discussed expanding the society’s website with the help of a web designer he has been working with from Columbus. The website currently includes listings of blues bands, jams, and venues, but is still under construction and in need of a calendar of events and someone to maintain it. (www.clevelandblues.org) The newly formed society is still in the formative stage, determining talents and resources and how to use them to keep the ball rolling. Active participation is important to really get things off the ground for this organization, and members are encouraged to pitch in and help out on the committees, as well as recruiting new members. Annual memberships are $20.00, family memberships are $30.00, and corporate memberships are $250.00. After taking care of business, a jam session ensued as always, with Bob Frank debuting a new tune, “Barack Obama Blues”, which he had written just one hour prior to the meeting. The Blues Society meets on the second Monday of each month, at a different venue. It is a great opportunity to learn your way around the city and become acquainted with the various blues clubs. The business part of the meeting is brief, followed by a jolly good jam session that pairs some of the best players in town with newcomers from all over. Blues Society members enjoy perks, such as discounts and free tickets to blues shows, and opportunities to participate in events held by other blues societies statewide. Last month President Gary Craft, Secretary Mary Rose Durdak, and board member Marlene Farone went to Toledo to help judge the Black Swamp Blues Challenge, held at Mickey Finns. They were joined by Maggie and Sweet Claudette from the Detroit Blues Society, and over one hundred people were in attendance. Five bands competed, along with five solo and duo acts, and winners Patrick Lewandowski and Frostbite are going to Memphis for the Blues Challenge. The Black Swamp Blues Society extended their hand in friendship and a wonderful time was had by all! Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we have a lot to be thankful for this year! First and foremost – the election of a new president, hopefully a step in the right direction toward the breakdown of the corrupt world economic and political hierarchy. On Thanksgiving Eve, traditionally the biggest bar night of the year, take time out from stuffing that turkey to celebrate the new regime! Bleeding Heart Blues Band will be at the House of Swing, Dash Board Jesus plays the Grand River Manor, and the Torchers of Swing make their first appearance at the Old Mill Winery in Geneva. And don’t forget about the annual Cebar’s Thanksgiving Night Reunion with the Armstrong Bearcats, and guest Euclid Tavern alumni Alan Greene, Don Buchanon, and Cy Sulak. When you have had your fill of food, football, and family, grab your second wind and blow on down to Cebar’s 185th for some smokin’ hot blues!

An all-star cast of Cleveland musicians have made a fifteen-song original Christmas CD due out for a December release. The musicians that make up the Ohio City Singers come form every walk of musical life in Cleveland – rock, folk, blues, bluegrass, soul, country, and Irish. They are: producer Don Dixon (REM, Joe Cocker, Counting Crows), Chris Allen, Marti Jones, Doug McKean, Molly Allen, Austin “Walkin’ Cane”, Tom Prebish, Mark Stepro, Chris Hanna, Brent Kirby, Bobbie Latina, Kelly Wright, Matt Sobule, Joe Rohan, and a choral group that included over thirty family members and friends. The band was formed at a Christmas house party five years ago in Chris Allen’s living room. Money was tight, and Chris and Molly Allen wanted to spread some holiday

cheer somehow. Chris and his right-hand man, Doug McKean, wrote some party songs, invited all their favorite musicians and singers, ran some tape, and the rest is history! The resulting celebration is a collection of songs shared by friends and family over the years. Recorded by Don Dixon, it is a holiday “best of” new Christmas classics, from the “White Cleveland Christmas” to “Candle Bags and House Parties.” The CD will be released at

the House of Blues on December 7 th , with a special performance in the Cambridge Room, and donations for “Coats for Kids” will be accepted at the same time. (www.theohiocitysingers.com)

CMAs and Cedar Creek: Quality Country Music, miles apart. T he Country Music Awards aired in Nashville this past Wednesday night on ABC, with the usual glitz, glamour, multi- cultural and “pop star gone country” performances. Hootie, (Darius Rucker) , of Hootie and the Blowfish, sang “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It.” The Eagles displayed an impressive five frontman performance, clad in black suits, all five strumming acoustic guitars. Ok it’s the Eagles, they can do whatever they want; the iconic legends released some great countrified rock hits in their early years. One of the most poignant moments of the evening was a female, and clearly atypical, presenter. Uttering a somber tone, she addressed the star studded Nashville audience, “You don’t know me”, followed by saying she was the wife of a fallen soldier in the Afghanistan War. She continued, “Music has the power to help us heal and we thank God for that power,” as a segway to Carrie Underwood’s beautiful ballad, “This is

Just a Dream”, a song detailing the heart and gut- wrenching shock loved ones face at the surreal funeral of a fallen husband, son or brother, “…it’s like a bullet

in my heart”. Nashville staple George Strait grabbed his 20th and 21st CMAs , winning both Song and Album of the Year with

“I Saw God Today” along with the disc,

Troubador . Other musical performances included Brad Paisley’s “Don’t Mind Waiting on a Woman”, complete with snazzy signature guitar licks; Kid Rock’s rebel rousing “All Summer Long, with Lil Wayne appearing, but not singing, Keith Urban’s duet with Paisley and Reba MacIntire’s duet with Brooks and Dunn . The night boasted a smorgasbord of classic, current, newcomer and non-traditional country crooners. It was the industry’s Who’s Who of country entertainment, hosted by Underwood and Paisley, who did a great job, winning themselves, both for

the second time, female and male vocalists of the year. Trace Atkins and Sugarland’s sultry Jennifer Nettles entertained us with their rich vocal talents. Country newcomer, James Otto, sang his radio popularized hit, “Girl I just Got Started Loving You” paying homage and noting the many local stations around the country who played his song. A stunning and sexy Shania Twain presented Kenny Chesney with the industry’s top honor, Entertainer of the Year. Chesney said, “This is my fourth time up here and I am really humbled”. He continued by mentioning his assistant and a friend, some important people he openly admitted he had never thanked before.

The complete list of winners from the 42nd Annual Country Music Association Awards:

Female Vocalist: Carrie Underwood Male Vocalist: Brad Paisley New Artist: Lady Antebellum Vocal Group: Rascal Flatts Vocal Duo: Sugarland Single of the Year: “I Saw God Today,” George Strait Album of the Year: Troubador , George Strait Song of the Year: “Stay,” Jennifer Nettles Musical Event: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, “Gone, Gone, Gone” Music Video: Brad Paisley, “Waitin’ on a Woman” Musician: Mac McAnally, guitar

embody true grassroots classic country music. Check out their entertaining website on my space: www.myspace.com/ cedarcreekband , complete with original music and comedy central-like blogs. The single “Love to Watch Her Go” gets frequent air time on two of Northeastern Ohio’s and Northwestern Pennsylvania’s most popular country stations: WYBL 98.3 FM “The Bull” and WKKY 104.7 FM “Country 104” . Other original tunes include: - If This Ain’t Hell- I Got an X - Plead the Fifth - I’m a Hillbilly (That’s Who I Am) - When She Hears This - Face the Fax, Same Man, and Trust Jesus. These tunes are solid, brilliantly written and recorded works. Band members are: Lynne Preston, lead vocals, acoustic guitar, songwriter and white Stetson hat. Joe Smith , lead/rhythm guitar, mandolin, backing vocals, lead vocals, muscle shirts. Bobby Selzer, organ, honky- tonk piano, backing vocals, Patch 38. Sonny Miller, pedal steel, lead/rhythm slide guitars, backing vocals, acrobatics. Don Chamberlain, bass guitar, backing vocals, requisite rocker nod. Dominic Tancredi , drums, percussion, random un-mic’ed vocals , Jimmy Preston, sound engineer, trailer packing consultant. Since 2003 the band has

been entertaining audiences of all ages with a comprehensive mix of the latest pop-country cover songs and Cedar Creek originals. Some notable performances have included opening for Nashville star Daryl Singletary and performing at Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The boys regularly play and pack legendary Jewels Dance Hall, often

turning away some. Their foot stomping line dancing music will warm up any chilly night. Now working on an album of all-original material, Cedar Creek is making their mark with memorable songs written by Lynn Preston (who frequently travels to Nashville collaborating with Toby Keith’s guitarist,

Rich Eckhart.)

Don’t miss Tony Rio and Relentless, Thanksgiving Eve, November 26, 9:30pm, at Jewels Dance Hall. Finally, the end of 2008 would not be complete without the return of Trailer Choir, to Jewels, December 20, with Tony Rio and Relentless, for the 98.3 Bull Christmas Bash III. By Sage Satori & Jim Ales T he Paul Green School of Rock is a Philadelphia based franchise that is

spreading across the country and giving young musicians a stage. The mantra “saving Rock and Roll, one kid at a time”, is based on “learning by doing.” When kids enter the School of Rock they are not only learning the instrument or instruments of choice they are experiencing how to be part

of a team with other musicians. There are two Schools of Rock in the Cleveland area. The first to open, in January of 2007, was the west side location in Rocky River and the second opened at their Highland Heights location in February of 2008. Franchise founder, Paul Green, now runs the New York City School of Rock. Music Director, Tommy Rich, first met Cleveland School of Rock franchise owners, Mike and Shelly Norehad, when he was doing some musical directing and other projects at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Tommy explains “Mike calls me and says ‘you’ve heard of the School of Rock? We’re about to open one in Cleveland and we were wondering’, and I

stopped him there and said ‘ wait! Don’t tell me you started a

school based on that stupid movie.’ Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack Black. I just thought the movie was a little too silly. So Mike explains ‘no it’s actually the other way around. School of Rock has been around

Page 15: The Lakehouse Innnorthcoastvoice.com/PDFs/VOICE 11-19.pdf · 2009. 5. 26. · that tributes the entire career of David Bowie in both Sound and Vision. For those that aren’t familiar,

since 1998, and they based the movie loosely on Paul Green’s eccentric character and what he does with the kids.’ And I said ‘Oh! Okay we can converse further. I won’t hang up on you.” Apparently the conversing went well

because Tommy is the Music Director for both of the Schools and he fits the shoes very well. As a music director Tommy has a lot of experience. He’s been producing records since 1998. As a self taught musician he feels he’s schooled. He can play almost any instrument in front him. He knows how to put bands together, he knows how to arrange. “I may not be able to play guitar like Van Halen, but I can tell you what’s wrong with what you’re playing.” The School takes kids ages 6 – 18, (19 if they are cast in a show during their last year of High School). After 19, then they go out on their own, or they can join the adult School of Rock. The very basics of how the school works is: for the students who have mastered the fundamentals there is a 45

minute weekly private lessons and 3 hour

weekly rehearsals (during show seasons) for the show on which the student has been cast. For the student who has just become interested and wants to learn the basics there is School of Rock 101 to teach the core fundamentals of playing an

instrument in a fun, low-stress environment. When

the student can functionally play the songs they’ve been assigned then they can move into the standard program. The feel within the walls of the school is vibrant energy and the décor throughout the building pays homage to rock idols. The main rehearsal room is decked with Stones, Floyd, Phish, Hendrix and AC/DC posters and sports the name “The Room”. There are six commandments posted on the wall in “The Room”, one of which is “For when you are in these halls – your life is music.” That states an attitude that we witnessed throughout our entire visit. So what do the parents think of this? Tommy answers “Most of the parents love it. They’re of our generation (classic rock) that

Page 16: The Lakehouse Innnorthcoastvoice.com/PDFs/VOICE 11-19.pdf · 2009. 5. 26. · that tributes the entire career of David Bowie in both Sound and Vision. For those that aren’t familiar,

grew up with Rock & Roll, so they’re just pleased that they’re playing this stuff. They are their biggest fans during the shows. Doing The Wall show really showed them that we’re serious about what we do. But if parents have a problem with some of the stuff Like AC DC or Black Sabbath, then they can talk to us and we’ll work them in something like Eric Clapton.” Tommy talks about parameters and expectations, “This is a tough program and it’s meant to be tough. Our mantra is ‘you all suck until further notice.’ But I deliver that message with the humility that ‘look I suck as well, just to a lot lesser degree than you guys. I mean I’m still never happy with my playing, I am still trying to learn, I’m still trying to get better

and believe me, I know when I suck. I’m just telling you

that until you suck at least as me, then we’re not equal.’ But we give these kids a lot of love too. There are some kids that come in just because their friends are in or are not very serious and we don’t ride them as hard. Some kids were horrified because they are expected to do this hard work and the bar is raised very high and they couldn’t keep up. So it’s primarily my job as Music Director, and the Show Director’s job as well, to figure out which

kids

really want to be and can be players.. We’re getting much better at that now that we have almost two years under our belt.” Shawn Perry was the show director working with the kids the day we visited and he seemed to have their full admiration as well as attention. Every new school begins with Pink

Floyd’s The Wall show.

Tommy’s enthusiasm shows as he talks about the experience “At first we couldn’t figure out why since it’s such a mature thing. It was last summer and we only had 12 kids and there are 26 songs in “The

Wall” and they attacked that material. It was great!” Some of the other bands featured individually in their shows are Van Halen, AC DC, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Eric Clapton. The shows are presented at several different venues around the Cleveland area including The Winchester, The Grog Shop, and Phantasy Club. Tommy mentions a really cool relationship the School has developed, “We have a great relationship with Phil Lara who owns the Jigsaw on the west side and he “gets it”. He gives us the club, but not during their regular show hours. He doesn’t have to pay anything; we take care of the door. He provides the sound and lights. The kids bring in 150 to 200 people, their parents and friends, they eat and drink the club makes money at a time they normally wouldn’t. Phil also owns The Agora and we’re going to get our East side show in there.” Tommy goes on to tell some other details, “The kids don’t get’s paid for any of the shows. They sell tickets, the kids promote their shows. So that they learn when they are going to be in their own band, they got to sell tickets. And whoever sells the most tix get a prize. The money for tix sales goes to payroll staff. We have a scholarship program for kids

who can’t afford School of Rock. We have a group called The Headliners which is the

best of kids. It’s a very small group and they do a lot of extra shows like House Of Blues and all kinds of events. They get a completely different curriculum of songs. I pick out some really challenging stuff. They get to do all kinds of things and it’s a real privilege for them, the money that is raised from that goes directly to the scholarship program.” A Scholarship Program has been developed for less privileged kids who have that

hunger for music and have no means to finance the lessons or the opportunity. We had the opportunity to see some of the West side kids display their talents in the children’s choir segment of “The Wall” show brought to the stage by Floyd tribute band Wish You Were Here and they did an outstanding job . The School of Rock does not hire music teachers. Rather they hire players who teach. “We’re here to teach the kids how to play and play together. I’m not a teacher. I have never taken a lesson in my life”. Tommy likes to encourage the kids to play other instruments to make them a more valuable

musician. “I say to them ‘what’s a guitar player worth? What’s a guitar player who can sing worth?’ And then ‘OK what’s a guitar player who can sing and play bass worth?’ “Now you’re rounding yourself out as a musician.” Although the school never closes, rehearsals during the holidays are not mandatory. They will have a Baby Band competition. The rules are one original song and one cover song and then they play for the school. They win prizes and make it fun. This competition is a good way to encourage and educate the kids on forming their own band. Summer Camp is another option offered by the school which is a one week intensive course in which the kids learn their parts and perform a show by week’s end. Last June was the second annual festival in which all of the schools in the country gather in Philadelphia. They get to bring their show and play prior to a major headliner. So Tommy went with the west side school and had this to say, “It was great, we got our asses kicked by some of the very well established schools that been around a while and really knew what they were doing. It was a great festival and we’ll do it in Asbury Park next year.” Yet another learning experience for the kids from the Paul Green School of Rock Music. Some of the students will perform at a Toys for Tots benefit at Cebar’s on 185 th St. in Euclid on Sunday Dec. 14 th so come out for a great cause and witness these students in action! The students will perform a full Van Halen show at The Agora Ballroom, Euclid Ave. Cleveland Jan 9th and 10th at 6:30 pm. For information on tuition and how to attend visit www.schoolofrock.com

you’re still in the

bathtub. It’s too soon! So let’s

wait just a little bit longer before Santa sets up his

kiosk in the mall where you can buy a picture of your child, screaming and terrified, sitting in his lap for $14.95. Yes, it’s Thanksgiving, a time to commemorate when the Pilgrims parked their Plymouth at Fraggle Rock and said, “Hey! This would be a great place for a mall!” Then they had an enormous feast with the Indians, just before they drove them off of their land and onto a reservation in Oklahoma. (I wonder if American Indians celebrate

W ell, Halloween is over and that means the next big holiday is…Christmas! At least you’d think so by listening to the muzak in the mall. I’m still picking caramel apple out of my teeth, but there’s nothing but Christmas music, Christmas decorations and Christmas sales. What about Thanksgiving !!?? Why not play some of those great Turkey-Day singalongs such as…hmmm…umm…never mind. Actually, I had a great Halloween. What a fun tradition it has become! Little kids in crazy costumes coming to my door holding out bags of candy and yelling, “Trick or Treat!” I always enthusiastically say, “I’ll take the treat!” and scoop a handful of candy out of each of their bags! Such a happy time! We ALL know Christmas is coming. Yes, we ALL love Christmas best. (Then your birthday, then Halloween, then Easter, then Thanksgiving, then Fourth of July, in that order. Right? Right! It’s all based on [1] how many presents you get and [2] what there is to eat. But when Christmas starts arriving too soon, it’s like too much chocolate cake. Wait a minute, bad analogy, there’s no such thing as too much

hemorrhoids. You know what? Let’s just skip the whole thing and go Christmas shopping.

Thanksgiving.) It’s a confusing time. Actually, Thanksgiving is a tough holiday for us guys. The women are all busy bustling around in the kitchen. Guys, don’t go in there! They’ll bite your head off or do evil things to you with a baster! And yet if you skulk away to the living room to watch football, you’ll get the “How can you just sit there when we’re doing all the work???” treatment, which is worse. It’s best if you remain standing in the hallway for the 4 hours while the turkey is cooking, sneaking a peek at the score when she’s not looking, wearing that nice holiday sweater she bought you last year (the one with the pilgrims and the turkeys and the pretty flowers and it itches like crazy !), greeting and conversing with distant relatives you don’t know, while Uncle Fred tells you about his

guitar; Marty Coe - bass guitar / vocals; Marlon Scott - guitar / vocals; Dave Bennett - guitar / vocals; Matt Gavula - keyboards / vocals; and Ron Lesh – drums. This lineup of Friction last performed together in 1994.

Friction performed full time thru out the ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. They toured relentlessly from Massachusetts to Florida and from New York City to Chicago to St Louis, hitting all major venues on many different circuits. “We had a great time as a touring and recording band, the opportunities were many,” Marty went on to say. “We toured with Loverboy, Foreigner, Donnie Iris, Michael Stanley Band, 38 Special, Edger Winter Band, Jackyl, Steppenwolf, Blue Oyster Cult, Kansas, Foghat, and Triumph.”

“We turned down many management / recording deals that in hindsight maybe we should have taken a chance on!” In 1990, Friction released the album, Baby Talk in

CD and cassette form. “Some of our best memories were in Ohio: performing at, Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown Agora Ballrooms, Yankee Lake Ballroom, Star Theater in

Youngstown, Spanky’s East & West in Cleveland, The Cove in Geneva on the Lake, and Dr. Feelgood’s in Conneaut, Oh - 50 cent draft night we partied and rock

with best of them!”

The reason for the reunion? “We

wanted to reunite not so much for our fans to see us again, but so our fans could reunite with each other to have a great party. We missed our fans and they missed us! It was time.”

This reunion show is a celebration of Friction in 2008. So set your GPS to Rainbow Gardens in Erie on Thanksgiving Eve, take a road trip and have a party and reunion with your old party friends!

I n 2006, three struggling, seasoned musicians who were seeking something new and meaningful, came together to form AILA. That year, members Tanya Kos, Eddie Edwards, and Vince Martin met through a local musician’s ad, and it was instant chemistry and synergism. The three now collaborate by using their talents in writing to record material that reflects their individual personalities as well as their personal beliefs. Their

sound is a cross-over of acoustic-rock, indie and contemporary rock. Tanya Kos on lead vocals and rhythm guitar delivers a strong emotional feel to the material while Eddie Edwards on bass and backing vocals adds his roots of rock and country influences as well. Vince Martin on drums and backing vocals brings years of experience to the group and provides a strong, solid foundation that completes AILA. With strong melodies

and meaningful lyrics, AILA’s goal is to continue to create music that everyone can enjoy and that all can relate to. “We write for ourselves and make no apologies.” says Edwards. AILA is a career-minded band that has never had anything handed to them. They’ve had to fight for everything they have, but they like it that way. It helps outdistance them from other bands by realizing nothing comes easy. AILA has had many influences throughout the years, from older bands such as The Motels, The Pretenders, Elvis and Def Leppard to newer bands like Dave Matthews, Six Pence None The Richer, Natalie Imbruglia and Ryan Adams. Even local Cleveland bands such as Savage Highway and Bottle have garnered AILA’s attention lately. The band is a product of much hard work. They have weathered the struggles and have come roaring through, be it languishing in cover bands or playing with other musicians who weren’t on the same page concerning making a career in the music business. These three talents have been brought together with a defined goal and clear focus and they’re ready to take on the world. It’s inevitable in this day and age that some people will try to equate AILA with many other bands from the past, but they don’t live in ‘yesterday’. “It’s all about forward thinking with this band.” states Martin, “The fans will always come first.” The Internet has become a critical tool for AILA in the way of band promotion and they’re currently taking advantage of it. by setting up a website, www.ailaonline.com, and a MySpace site, www.myspace.com/ailarocks “We realize that it’s a nail in the coffin for any modern band who does not utilize the World Wide Web to the maximum.” states Martin. When you chose to visit the sites, and/or check out the shows, you’ll experience a fresh, modern, cutting-edge sound that will, for the time you’re listening, make you forget about

the current world events that can be so mentally taxing. With great material and an equally impressive stage presence they have the ingredients to go a long way in the music business. With all of this said, AILA will be playing a doubleheader November 21-22 at The Cove Nite Club in Geneva-on-the-Lake. “The machine is now rolling full steam and there’s no stopping this ride!” offers Kos.

Role Models Universal • R • 95 min

OK. Last issue we did ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO, an offbeat comedy which your humble narrator found to be yet another Kevin Smith diamond in the rough. This time we’re going with another odd but profitable comedy ROLE MODELS. Let’s call it David Wain’s chunk of granite in the rough. Well, maybe feldspar. Wain, whose credits include the stunningly un funny RENO 911, has offered up a cookie cutter redemption comedy that may have been found it Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler’s wastebasket. Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott are Danny, a whiner stuck in a miserable job and failing relationship and Wheeler, the obnoxious best pal. The job consists of driving a custom SUV to schools promoting an energy drink (obviously patterned after Red Bull) via an embarrassing anti drug shtick. Finally Danny reaches the breaking point, launches into Life sucks/This stuff’s poison rant and crashes the company SUV on school property. Even though he’s been officially dumped by his attorney girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks from ZACK AND MIRI) she works out a deal allowing the fellows to swap jail time for community service with a “Big Brothers” clone. The guys are assigned two of the organizations toughest cases. Wheeler, a foul-mouthed little sex fiend and Danny gets Augie, a nerd who immerses himself in a Dungeon and Dragon kind of fantasy world as a means of escape from reality. It’s no spoiler that before it’s over there will be life affirming bonding and a triumphant ending. Hey, gang, this ain’t Bergman, then again I didn’t want to see Bergman. Honestly ROLE MODELS starts out as maybe a D. I thought the production was unnecessarily cheesy, Danny too much of a drag and Wheeler (and his young charge) too obnoxious and vulgar for empathy, and I didn’t get the chemistry between Rudd and Banks. But wait, it does get better. Jane Lynch really is funny and the over the top as the recovered booze dope and sex addicted director of the faux Big Brothers organization. I’ll also admit that many of the gags that missed the mark are actually not too far off

target and I did find myself rooting hard for Augie and Danny to get over the hump. After all is said and done I found the meter had slowly risen from a D to a B-. There isn’t much new or outstanding but it’d be hard to leave the theater without a smile.

J ames Bond is as enduring as an international icon as Elvis, Sinatra or the Beatles, though among them only Bond lives in reality and fiction. You may say, “Wait a minute! There was never a real James Bond” and I’d say sure there is. He’s Sean Connery and though many have played the role (and despite the fact Ian Fleming envisioned David Niven in the role) every one is compared to him. Even though the franchise has slowly drifted away from the suave Fleming character it didn’t seem synthesized until Roger Moore donned the tuxedo and sipped a vodka martini; shaken not stirred. The legend of Bond has grown in past years as the original stream of novels dried up and as the nearly magical spy gadgets became a bigger part of the show. Those have taken a back seat in the last couple films as Daniel Craig takes the helm as a tougher more somber Bond. Craig’s CASINO ROYALE is the foreword to QUANTUM OF SOLACE and if you’re into continuity you may want to go back and

review that one. I found myself a little confused having forgotten some of the characters and motivations from a year ago. Here we find the usual international bad guys, super secret organizations and sinister world scale mischief. In ROYALE Bond’s paramour and possible betrayer winds up on the wrong side of the grass, as do so many of his ladies. With a chance for revenge at hand M (Judi Dench) wonders whether he’s the right man to investigate, well, whatever it is that needs investigated. This shadow organization includes the

creepy Mr. Green, a greedy bastard with plans of controlling the world’s most precious resource. Yeah I know, not being eco friendly is a big crime in the PC world. The whole plot is unfortunately a little muddy and you may wonder just what all the spectacular chase scenes, impressive location shots, fights and gunfire are for. What we do know is that we don’t like Mr. Green or his nasty South American dictator buddy or the guys who are framing as a renegade. As long as a PG 13 rating is necessary in order to rake in the huge dollars it’s going to be very hard to make the bad guys personally evil enough to work up a properly vehement aversion. Global domination, eh? Like the song says, “Everybody wants to rule the world.” As usual what’s good is very good but the series may be reverting to its old habit of allowing the production to eclipse the story.

W ell now, would you believe that some people took offense to my last article? I was asked to predict the outcome of the presidential election… it was NOT my fault! How was I to know that more perfectly sane people would all of a sudden turn into “Electacians” (ee- lek-tay-shuns) ?

Like one of my best friends, Olive Oil for instance. She’s engaged to Brutus… yeah Popeye is out; he’s probably buried in the back yard somewhere! She said that my article sounded like I was angry… humm that’s just what an Electacian would say, but no, not Olive Oil, she’s too smart to fall for that crap.

Then again, the day after the election I was invited to Olive’s for a “grubinmovie”, that’s short for “grub and a movie”, and during the movie Olive starts googling Obama on the internet. All during the movie she’s asking us, “Did you know that he was this…, and he did that… and on and on and poor Brutus and I just looked at each other and shook our heads in disbelief!

Yeah that confirms it, she has caught the “Electotarium Disease”! I can’t believe it… I thought I immunized all my friends and family, damn must have been a weak batch!

However Olive Oil is not alone in her suffering, I’ve noticed a lot of google-eyed newly formed Electacians all spouting how wonderful Obama is and how he’s going to bring us out of the eight year puppet show with a wave of a magic wand and everything is going to be so marvelous… life is going to be so grand!

I’m just waiting for the press release that tells us that he’s officially changing his name to “Jesus Obama” and how he’s going to turn water into “Mad Dog” every Thursday at Ten! (mad dog is a brand of really cheap, really nasty wine)

I can just hear the radio commercials for that one…

“He’s amazing!”

“He’s astonishing!”

“He’s fantastic!”

“Heeeeees Jesus Obama!”

”Watch as he turns your jug of water into wine right before your eyes!”

“You’ll be amazed at the choice of flavors, astonished at the beautiful labeling with Jesus Obama’s smiling face!”

“You’ll feel fantastic after consuming several gallons of what was once just plain ordinary water!”

“Stay tuned for your chance to win two free tickets to the Jesus Obama Road Show coming to your neighborhood soon!”

“Just be caller number seven when you hear three mourning dove “coo’s” and you and a friend will get front row seats when the Jesus Obama Road Show comes to your city!”

Then there will be one of those really fast disclaimers saying:

“Be sure to bring plenty of cash because now you’ll have to pay the over inflated wine tax for what was once your water, and let’s not forget the newly passed miracle tax, and there’s the astonishing beautiful label tax, and of course your local state, county, city, and or rural sales taxes!”

Pa-leeeeze people wake up! He is first and foremost a p-p-p-politician, and what do p-p-p-politicians do? Find new creative ways to get more of that dirty old cash out of your wallet! It’s been that way for thousands of years for thousands of governments.

We just need to find new and creative ways to get some of it back… just like we’ve always done!
