THE KOKO ASIA LAUNCH PARTY
June 5th 2009 – Zouk @ Kuala Lumpur
THE HYPE• Guaranteed to become the soundtrack to
your weekend debauchery , the legendary KOKO has spreads its wings and flew East to take its night of counter culture shenanigans to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
With one of the most seductive line ups to ever hit BarSonic, KOKO Asia was proud to present THE STANDARDS in their Malaysian debut. Renowned for their in your face sets and electrifying performances The Standards have been dubbed the boys to call to smash up your dance floor and get the weekend started with a pounding of your ear drums and a kick to the proverbials.
For the exclusive launch of CLUB KOKO, we flew in SIMON SUBSONIC, the resident KOKO UK DJ who is currently supporting Placebo on their UK tour. Simon has played alongside the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Gossip, Babyshambles and MGMT and regularly destroys crowds of 10,000 strong at festivals in the UK.
• What would your Friday night be without your usual dose of TWILIGHT ACTION GIRL pandemonium? Your local indie DJ’s rocked their trademark brand of action, guaranteeing that everybody had their dancing shoes well and truly tied.
We also had KL indie rockers DESERTERS playing brand new tracks from their debut LP ‘Goodbye Oblivion’ in another exclusive for KOKO Asia as they demonstrated all the blood, sweat and tears lost in the recording studio .
Piecing the whole night together was KOKO Asia’s very own JOHNNY MAYO who dished out his usual trade of guitar dominated indie canticles and slamming electro beats to get the party started.
• We brought you the latest indie anthems, jacking electro beats and alternative tunes over 6 hours of pure, unrivalled dance floor mayhem.
• KOKO HAS LANDED…

ATTRACTING THE EARLY BIRDS
THE AIR ASIA FLYER
“What a night! The work, planning, sweat,
blood and tears that have gone into bringing
KOKO to Asia were truly worth it for those five hours of madness. I cant see how it could have been any better.
KOKO is more than just a night out, it’s a scene,
a brand, something special. I thought that was what we brought
tonight.”
ASHA GILLMC
MATT SMITH
“That could only be described as one of the
defining moments of The Standards. Playing something the like the
KOKO Asia launch is the dream of many
musicians here and it was an honor and a pleasure to headline
the first. Being a London boy I know all about the significance of KOKO. It still hasn’t
sunk in.”
The Standards
DESERTERS KL indie heavyweights
Deserters had the privilege of being the first band to rock KOKO Asia. It was a special show from Zack Yusof and co, and to amplify the importance of CLUB KOKO, Deserters played an exclusive sneak preview from their second studio album ‘Goodbye Oblivion’ - another KOKO first.
ZACK YUSOF "Hell yeah!! You can blame it on
the drinks but for me, the atmosphere was
fantastic, hugely celebratory, even almost New Year's Eve-like
at some points. Highlights? Rocking the inaugural Club Koko
stage, singing along to Town Called Malice with The Standards and Mind The Gap, being trapped
on the dance floor by loads of people dancing, the Karma Police singalong, slamming tequila with
some new, some old friends, rediscovering my
love for early Arcade Fire... here's to the next one!!!"
Deserters
SIMON SUBSONIC
“What an atmosphere! The KOKO Asia boys
have talked for a long time about doing something special and that
certainly was. The buzz, the music, the
crowd and the singalongs. I had no
idea how well a concept like KOKO
would cross borders until tonight. That
was something special.”
KOKO UK DJ
JOHNNY MAYOKOKO Asia DJ
“That has to be the best night I have ever played. We all put months of work into that night and I could not be
happier with the reaction. Being a BarSonic regular I can honestly say that that was one of the best nights
that club has ever seen….until the next CLUB
KOKO of course.”
"I didn't really know much about KOKO Asia or Club KOKO. So I went to BarSonic without much expectations and was stoked that I got more than I bargained for. I felt good vibes: the music was energetic, the bands were just great and the crowd amazing. Personally, I think bringing down regional bands and getting local ones to perform is a brilliant way to expose non-commercial indie musicians to ‘noobs’ like me. I’m happy to say that for the first ever KOKO Asia, I was there"

SHAKILA RAJENDRA Clubber / Blogger
“That was what KL has been waiting
for! Asia needs you KOKO! I’ve never had a night like it
KL. From the second we
walked in we could tell it
was going to be a special night. The
atmosphere was electric.”
PAUL DEAKINHedonist “Oh my days!
Where did that come from?
Unbelievable! I'm a KOKO regular in
Malaysia on holiday and had no idea they were up to this. When we
spotted a flyer I admit admit I was dubious at first, I
thought an imitation was on the cards, but the tunes,
the people, the party. It was KOKO.
I have been travelling for 4
months now and that was the best night out by far.”
ANEELA MIRZAClubber
“The best indie / electro night KL has seen yet.”
