Missio Dei by Pastor Patrick

Seasons For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.

—Ecclesiastes 3:1

Seasons have been on my mind a lot lately. It may be that this long cold winter, followed by a long cold spring, is finally looking like it will give way to warmer weather. It seems that when we are in the middle of one season, and anticipating the coming season, time passes quite slowly. We just can't wait to get on with that next season. Unfortunately, in doing so we tend to miss out on the uniqueness of the days we are currently living. We don't live fully in the present when we are yearning for the future.

Seasons come in all shapes and sizes, too. Sometimes a season may last only days or weeks. Other times seasons can last for months and years. We, at Christ the King, have entered into a new season; it's a season of transition. For nearly 20 years, our congregation has had the pleasure of having Pastor John Petersen as Senior Pastor. Pastor John has led us through births and deaths, Easters and Christmases, good times and challenging times. It has been a season marked with growth and loss, happy times and sad times, but filled with the Holy Spirit throughout. Now that season is ending.

This new season of transition we’ve entered can cause some disruption from our normal way of doing things. Most of us don't like much disruption in our lives, and we too often rush through seasons of transition trying to get to a season of stability. We want to get past the season of transition so that we can be back in a season that is familiar to us once again. Yet by focusing all of our attention on the coming season, we fail to live fully into this moment, and risk missing out on some of the blessings that God has for us in the current season.

The Israelites went through a season of transition after their release from Egypt. Moses led them from captivity toward the Promised Land and all they did was complain. Instead of wanting to move forward into the Promised Land season, they yearned to return to captivity where life was more familiar. In the midst of their wilderness wanderings, God sent blessings in the form of manna from heaven. Yet, they were so focused on wanting to go back to the way things were that they totally missed the miracle of what was.

While not everyone totally appreciates a season of transition, including myself, it may be helpful to remember the words from the author of Ecclesiastes. We, at Christ the King, are experiencing a unique season. Even as we plan and pray about the upcoming season, let us remind one another to live fully into this season of transition and enjoy all of the special blessings that it brings as well.

Donohue Sarff.

Prayer is a Working Tractor!

(Tractor - Latin = Trahere – to pull, to draw)

Try to imagine this fake rural scene: It’s the end

of June, and you are driving on a country road and notice

lots of idle farm machinery. It is obvious that no tillage

has been done and no crop is growing. Your curiosity

gets the best of you, so you stop at the next town, walk

into the Main Street Café, order your pie and coffee and

look for someone to ask about what you observed in the

countryside. In walks a man and woman, looking down in

the mouth and seat themselves at the other end of the

counter. You take your pie and coffee and sit on a stool

next to them. You strike up a conversation by telling

them about all the idle machinery you saw. They ask:

“Did you see any tractors?” “No, now that you mention

it, I didn’t see any tractors.” “That’s the problem all of

us farmers are having.” “What, no tractors?” “Yes, we

all still have our tractors, but they suddenly turned into

toy tractors!” “TOY tractors … but, why, how …?”

“Yes, toy tractors … pfft … zap … and now our once-

upon-a-time source of power is sitting on the shelf in

our den! Something to play with, but absolutely useless

out in the field to help produce a crop!”

End of fake working-tractors-turned-toy-tractors story.

Prayer is a working tractor. If you notice a lot of idle

machinery around the church, it could be because the

Working Prayer Tractor has turned into a toy. Loss of the

main mechanical power makes for unproductive farming.

Playing around with prayer, (like playing with my toy

Allis Chalmers Model WC pictured below) makes an

unproductive church. The sown seed of God’s Word,

pulled and drawn with Working Tractor Prayer, makes a

productive church!

CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH

HANBELL CHOIR BEGINNING

Our church was blessed with a wonderful gift from Lois Dahl–Finanger in memory of her husband Don Dahl who passed away in February 1989. This memorial was specifically dedicated to the purchase of 2-Octaves of handbells, necessary tables and pads. The recruitment of ten members for the new CTK Handbell choirs began in Spring of 1990 under the direction of Clayton Tiede & Dale Mikkalson.

Rehearsals began in November 1990 using two octaves of 25 handbells and the following 10 Charter Ringers: Mardell Jensen – Cindy Kehoe – Judy Lokensgard – Sue Moore – Kris Norland - Norma Pulis – Stephanie Raymo – Barb Riessen – Carol Schultz – Ann Stewart. Six members of this Charter choir continue to be involved with the CTK Handbell Choirs.

CTK Council approved establishment of bell choir director position on April 18,

1990

Summer of 1990 was for recruitment of 10 ringers

Handbell Choir rehearsal began November 4, 1990

The 3rd octave of handbells was added February 1991 - - as well as additional

ringers!

The 4th octave of handbells was added 2001 and the 5th octave (partial) handbells

was added 2004 & 2007

Today’s CTK Handbell choirs perform using four and a half octaves with 56 handbells

and a total of 21-22 ringers for the two choirs. It’s amazing that there are still six

ringers from the 1990 Charter CTK Handbell Choir who are still ringing today in

2014!
