Un territorio tUtto da scoprire Un week end tra la Bergamo sul colle o il Lago Sebino, autentica gemma incasto-nata nel territorio bergamasco, tra montagne e verdi colline. è quanto suggerisce the Key in questo numero, con una avvertenza: sicuramente un week end non può bastare. Prendetevi qualche giorno in più se riuscite a organizzare meglio il vostro soggiorno, oppure utilizzate una prima esperienza per organizzare un ritorno avendo a disposizione un periodo di tempo più lungo. Non c’è rischio di restare delusi. Con il suo straordinario patrimonio artistico e storico, l’antica città di notte è ancora più accogliente e finirà con l’attrarre anche il turista più frettoloso trattenendolo più di quanto non abbia previsto. E il lago? Un soggiorno è quanto di meglio c’è per divertirsi, riposare, fare sport, godersi le giornate di splendido sole, compresa una mini-crociera in battello che conduce alla scoper-ta di inconsueti paesaggi e di un’ottima cucina. Non è un caso che al continuo incremento di turisti a Bergamo corrisponda un crescente successo di presenze nei paesi che si affacciano sulle sponde del Sebino. Naturalmente le bellezze e le attrattive della Bergamasca non si esauriscono qui: le montagne, le valli solcate dai fiumi Brembo e Serio, i borghi di pianura ne sono la degna cornice.

a land to be discovered A weekend spent between hilltop Bergamo and Lake Sebino (Iseo), a genuine gem set among the green hills and mountains of Bergamo province. This is what we at the Key are recommending in this issue, but with one piece of advice: a weekend is certainly not enough. Take a few days extra, if you can manage to organise your stay, or use your first experience here to organise another, longer holiday at a later date. You won’t be disappointed. With its extraordinary heritage of art and history, the old town at night is even more charming and will entice even the most hurried tourist, detaining him longer that planned. And the lake? A holiday here offers the opportunity to have fun, try out some sport and enjoy time in the sun, perhaps by taking a short trip on a boat in discovery of unique scenery and excellent food. It is not by chance that the continuing increase of tourists to Bergamo province coincides with a growing number of people visiting the shores of the Sebino. Naturally, the Bergamo area has many other attractions and beautiful places to explore: the mountains, the valleys of the rivers Brembo and Serio, and the villages of the Po plain all provide a worthy setting.

Torna infatti, dal 30 agosto al 16 settembre, I Maestri del Paesaggio - International Meeting of the Landscape and Garden. Il programma prevede una splendida Piazza Vecchia trasformata in un rigoglioso giardino fiorito (e oggetto della nostra copertina - foto evento 2011), workshop e seminari con paesaggisti di fama internazionale; visite guidate e incontri con l’arte.Bergamo accoglie quindi un mondo pensato verde divenendo la culla della sostenibilità ambientale per questo grande imperdibile evento. In September, Bergamo is celebrating green landscapes with an international event completely dedicated to the meeting of nature with architecture. The Landscape Masters - International Meeting of the Landscape and Garden - is returning from 30 August to 16 September. The programme will see a splendid Piazza Vecchia transformed into a lush flower-filled garden (and subject of our cover - photo of the 2011 event), and feature workshops and seminars with international landscape designers, guided tours and artistic events.Bergamo will therefore be playing host to a green world, becoming a cradle of environ-mental sustainability for this great and unmissable event.

La difesa della portaSi prende l’autobus della linea 1 che, salendo a Bergamo alta (Colle Aperto), percorre il viale delle Mura. Superata la monumentale Porta Sant’Agostino, la prima fermata consente di vedere la cannoniera esistente nel baluardo di san michele. è una strut-tura sotterranea, dalle volte imponenti, dove i cannoni venivano utilizzati per la difesa della porta stessa.

After passing through the monumental Porta Sant’Agostino, the first stop gives us a view of the embrasure in the bastion of san michele. This is an underground struc-ture, with imposing vaulted ceilings, where cannons were used to defend the gate itself.

Ci sono monumenti in cui non è facile individuare il legame che unisce Bergamo alta e Ber-gamo bassa. Non solo ci sono le mura costruite da Venezia nel ‘500 che le separano fisica-mente, ma la loro storia è molto diversa. Eppure ci sono itinerari seguendo i quali alla fine si comprende come Bergamo sia veramente una cosa sola, dove la bellezza fa da legame indis-solubile. Ed ecco un percorso che aiuta nella scoperta. Ma un giorno solo non basta.

Upper bergamo and loWer bergamo, tWo very diFFerent toWns,bUt both UniqUe in their beaUty You cannot visit Bergamo without noticing the differences between upper Bergamo and lower Bergamo, even though there are also monuments that clearly identify the links between the two towns. It is not just the walls built by the Venetian Republic in the sixteenth century that separate them physically, their history is also very different too. And yet there are itineraries that, if followed, make you understand how Bergamo is truly just one city in which beauty creates an unbreakable bond. This is one such route that will help you discover the area; one day, however is not enough to see everything.

Il sotterraneo di San GiovanniSi può riprendere l’autobus alla stessa fermata per raggiungere Colle Aperto. Noi suggeria-mo, a chi vuole compiere una passeggiata non impegnativa, di proseguire lungo i bastioni delle mura. Ed ecco, in sequenza, l’imponente Palazzo Medolago Albani e, di fronte allo stesso, la Porta San Giacomo, in candido marmo con un disegno che richiama le opere del grande Palladio. Quasi al termine del tratto in salita ecco le grandiose cannoniere nel baluardo di san giovanni: recentemente restaurate, dalla loro scenografica imponenza ci si può immaginare quali opere abbia richiesto la costruzione delle mura. Chi compie in vece il percorso con l’autobus, una volta a Colle Aperto deve ritornare sui suoi passi per un breve tratto (circa 200 metri) per arrivare all’ingresso delle cannoniere di San Giovanni.

The underground areas of San Giovanni

Now get on the bus from the same stop to Colle Aperto. If you’d like to take a short walk, we suggest following the ramparts of the walls. You’ll encounter, in sequence, the impo-sing Medolago Albani Palace and in front, Porta San Giacomo, an entrance gate of white

marble with a design that is similar to the works of the great Palladio. Almost at the end of the road leading upwards lies the majestic, recently restored embrasure in the bastion of san giovanni. The spectacular stateliness of the walls reveals the work that was required to build them. If, instead, you decide to take the bus, on arriving in Colle Aperto, walk a short distance back along the route (approximately 200 metres) to reach the entrance of the embrasure of San Giovanni.

La casa di Gaetano Donizetti e l’Orto BotanicoDa Colle Aperto, attraversando la Porta Sant’Alessandro, dopo poche decine di metri si entra nell’antico borgo canale. Qui si trova la casa dove nacque Gaetano Donizetti, il grande musicista. Tornati a Colle Aperto c’è tempo per visitare l’orto botanico, un angolo colmo di fiori e verde, al quale si accede procedendo per via Beltrami. L’accesso è proprio a lato dell’antica polveriera veneziana, singolare struttura in pietra che unisce un solido pa-rallelepipedo a una non meno imponente piramide. Dal giardino si gode uno dei più affascinanti scorci su Città alta e i suoi tetti.

Gaetano Donizetti’s house and the Botanical GardenFrom Colle Aperto, passing through Sant’Alessandro Gate, you’ll arrive in the old borgo canale district. Here lies the house where Gaetano Donizetti, the great musician, lived. Returning to Colle Aperto, there’s time to visit the botanical gardens, a corner filled with flowers and plants, which is reached from Via Beltrami. The entrance lies next to the old Venetian gunpowder magazine, an unusual structure in stone that combines a solid parallelepiped with a rather imposing pyramid. The gar-den offers a magnificent view over Città Alta (Upper Bergamo) and its rooftops.

Sul colle di San VigilioEcco l’occasione per conoscere un aspetto poco noto della città. Bergamo alta è domi-nata dal colle di San Vigilio. Già nel Medioevo sulla sua sommità sorgeva un castello; dopo la costruzione delle mura, Venezia lo trasformò in una ben munita fortezza. Si può salire fin sul colle a piedi, ma la strada è in forte pendio. Meglio prendere la moderna funicolare (la stazione di partenza è subito fuori Porta Sant’Alessandro): in pochi minu-

ti si è lassù, immersi nel verde e con straordinarie vedute che incantarono il futuro premio Nobel Hermann Hesse quando nel 1913 visitò Bergamo. Un buon pranzo como-damente seduti offre la possibilità di godersi la quiete del luogo assieme al panorama. Più tardi vi aspetta la visita al castello di san vigilio: si sale per una ripida scalinata, al termine della quale si è ripagati dalle vedute verso Città alta e verso la catena delle montagne bergamasche, le Orobie.

On the hill of San Vigilio

This is the chance to learn more about a little known aspect of the city. Upper Bergamo is dominated by the hill of San Vigilio. A castle was found on its summit as early as the Middle Ages, and after the construction of the walls, Venice transformed this building into a well-equipped fortress. You can walk to the top of the hill, but the road is on a steep slope. A better way to visit the hill is to take the modern funicular train (the sta-tion can be found immediately outside Porta Sant’Alessandro): in a few minutes, you’ll find yourself at the top, surrounded by green gardens and with extraordinary views that even enchanted the future Nobel prizewinner, Hermann Hesse, in 1913 when he visited

Bergamo. A good lunch, comfortably seated, offers the opportunity of enjoying the tranquillity of the place and the panorama. Lunch over and you can now visit the castle of san vigilio. After climbing the steep steps to the castle, you’ll be rewarded by the views over Città Alta and towards the chain of Bergamask mountains, the Orobie.

Nel cuore di Città AltaNon è mai troppo tardi per ridiscendere verso Colle Aperto, sempre ricorrendo alla funicolare oppure seguendo la strada che in pochi minuti vi riporta giù in basso. L’itinerario abbandona, per il momento, le vedute panoramiche per en-trare nel cuore di Città Alta. Si supera il complesso della cittadella, in origine struttura militare dei Visconti, i signori di Milano. Dalla Cittadella si esce su piazza mascheroni, dove inizia la via Colleoni. è la strada principale del centro storico che, assieme alla via Gombito, lo attra-versa fino alla stazione della funicolare. Su via Colleoni si affaccia la dimora dove risiedeva Bartolomeo Colleoni, il grande condottiero, nelle rare volte in cui, lasciato il suo castello a Malpaga, raggiungeva Bergamo. Poco oltre, a destra, il

complesso del teatro sociale, recentemente recuperato con un restauro che ne ha valorizzato l’impianto ottocentesco.

In the heart of Città AltaIt’s never too late to go back down towards Colle Aperto, again taking the fu-nicular train or following the road that leads to the town. There’ll be no more panoramic views for a while as you enter the heart of Città Alta. You pass the complex of the cittadella (citadel), originally a military structure of the Vi-sconti, Lords of Milan. The Cittadella leads to piazza mascheroni, from where Via Colleoni begins. This is the main road that, together with Via Gombito, crosses the old town heading towards the funicular station. The residence of Bartolomeo Colleoni lies on Via Colleoni and the great condottiero would stay here on the rare oc-casions he left his castle in Malpaga. A short way further on, on the right, is the complex of teatro sociale (social theatre), which has recently been restored to valorise its nineteenth-century plan.

Il panorama dalla torreLa via Colleoni immette in piazza Vecchia. Vi suggeriamo di rinviarne la visita più tardi perché adesso vi aspetta la salita in cima alla torre di gombito (orari di visita: da lun. a ven. dalle 14.30 alle 16.00, sab. e dom. anche dalle 10.00 alle 12 - su prenotazione c/o l’ufficio turistico di Bergamo Alta). Ne vale proprio la pena. La torre è massiccia, alta poco più di 52 metri, testimonia le lotte che nel Medioevo si scatenavano tra le fazioni dei Guelfi e dei Ghibellini. La visita permette un bel tuffo nel passato e singolari vedute dall’alto.

The view from the towerVia Colleoni leads to Piazza Vecchia. We suggest postponing your visit until later and climbing to the top of the gombito tower (opening hours: from Mon. to Fri. from 2.30 p.m. to 4.00 pm, Sat. and Sun. also from 10.00 am to Midday, with advanced booking at the tourist office in the Upper Town) - it is well worth it. The tower is solid, slightly more than 52 metres high, and was witness to the conflict that erupted between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines during the Middle Ages. The visit offers a chance to go back in time and enjoy unique views from the top.

Le meraviglie della piazza Dopo la torre torniamo sui nostri passi. La meta è piazza vecchia, cuore monumen-tale della città, ma un tempo era anche il centro della vita politica e amministrativa di Bergamo. Sulla piazza, nella quale sembra di riconoscere atmosfere veneziane, si affaccia il medievale palazzo della ragione; sul lato opposto, alle spalle di chi guar-da il Palazzo della Ragione, si innalza il palazzo della civica biblioteca angelo mai. La piazza è dominata, con un forte richiamo visivo, dalla Torre comunale, detta del campanone, dove si può salire con l’ascensore. Si consiglia di accedere all’impianto passando per il grande ingresso che si trova sul passaggio tra piazza Vecchia e piazza del Duomo. Qui spiccano i resti del foro romano scoperti di recente. Da non perdere la visita al museo storico dell’età veneta, con un viaggio multimediale nella Ber-gamo del ‘500. La visita richiede un’ora. Sulla piazza del Duomo si affacciano il battistero, la cattedrale di bergamo (di fronte), la cappella colleoni, con le tombe del celebre condottiero e della figlia Medea, capolavoro del Rinascimento lom-bardo. E poi, al culmine di questo straordinario viaggio tra storia e arte, la basilica di santa maria maggiore.

The wonders of the square After the tower we retrace our steps to piazza vecchia, the monumental heart of the city, which was once the centre of political and administrative life of Bergamo. The squa-re, with its Venetian atmosphere, is overlooked by the medieval palazzo della ragio-ne (lit. palace of reason); on the opposite side - behind you if you are looking at Palazzo della Ragione - stands the building of the “angelo mai” civic library. Attrac-ting your eye upwards, the municipal Tower, also known as the campanone (big bell), dominates the square. The large entrance is found in the passage between Piazza Vecchia and Piazza del Duomo, where the remains of a Roman forum were recently discovered. A lift takes you to the top of the tower. Don’t miss a visit to the “museo storico dell’età veneta” (history museum of the venetian era), which takes you on a multimedia journey through Bergamo in the sixteenth century. The visit takes an hour. Piazza del Duomo, instead, is overlooked by the baptistery, Bergamo cathedral (opposite) and the colleoni chapel, with the tombs of the celebrated condottiero and his daughter Medea, a masterpiece of the Lombard Renaissance. The basilica of santa maria mag-giore crowns this extraordinary journey among history and art.

Rocca: torri, cupole e campaniliNel riattraversare la piazza diretti verso la via Gombito, non dimenticate di soffermarvi accanto alla bella fontana di candido marmo al centro, dono alla città del podestà Conta-rini prima di rientrare a Venezia. La prima tappa è la rocca che si raggiunge percorren-do via Gombito per poi seguire, in salita, la via Rocca. La fortezza domina l’antica città da colle di Santa Eufemia. Dalla Rocca, tra l’altro, si gode una vista unica su torri, cupole e campanili del centro storico. Un punto di vista da non perdere per le foto ricordo.

Rocca (fortress): towers, domes and bell towersWhen you cross the square heading back to Via Gombito, don’t forget to stop in front of the beautiful white marble fountain in the centre, a gift to the city from the podestà Contarini before he returned to Venice. Our first stop is the “rocca”, a fortress that is reached by following Via Gombito and then, climbing, Via Rocca. The fortress domi-nates the old city from the hill of Santa Eufemia. A wonderful view over the towers, domes and bell towers of the old town can be enjoyed from the Rocca, making it an excellent viewing point for souvenir photos.

Tra “dolce vita” e movidaRifatto il percorso di prima e ridiscesi per via Rocca, adesso avete tutto il tempo che volete per organizzare la serata. La via Gombito, la via Colleoni, piazza Vecchia, piazza Mascheroni, Colle Aperto e tante viuzze adiacenti vi offrono la possibilità, attraverso ristoranti e locali di ogni tipo, di trascorrere piacevolmente il resto della serata. Una specie di “dolce vita” in Città Alta, tra cena e shopping. Ma c’è anche la movida che vi attende. Ed ecco allora l’aperitivo nello straordinario ex monastero di San Francesco, dove tanti giovani si incontrano per un drink, per fare conversazione, per divertirsi. Ma una serata veramente straordinaria vi attende se, tornati a Colle Aperto, rifate la passeggiata lungo i baluardi delle mura. Qui, con vista sullo straor-dinario panorama della Bergamo notturna, potete bere e cenare in tre punti di in-contro situati lungo i baluardi: nei pressi di Porta San Giacomo, al baluardo di San Michele e vicino a Porta Sant’Agostino. Vale la pena proseguire ancora verso l’alto della via per scoprire l’elegante sequenza delle facciate di una serie di palazzi cinquecenteschi.

Situated at the beginning of a large and airy avenue known as the Sentierone, the church of san bartolomeo is another treasure trove of art that will amaze those who do not know it. At the end, behind the high altar, a large altarpiece offers another masterpie-ce by Lorenzo Lotto, “Madonna and Child on a Throne with Saints”, painted in 1516.

This area is overlooked by the teatro donizetti (donizetti theatre) with its romantic monument to the great musician. The heart of the shopping area begins in the Sentierone and continues along via xx settembre, via sant’orsola, and via sant’alessandro, together with the areas alongside via borfuro and via tiraboschi. The last stop is piazza pontida, which is bordered by porticos that once held the stores and warehouses of busy merchants, and features the cha-racteristic crossroads of the “Cinque Vie” (five roads). Among the shop windows are a few restaurants or bars for a rest and lunch.

Nel 1524 l’artista realizzò il ciclo di af-freschi nella chiesetta dedicata alle Sante Barbara e Brigida che si affacciava direttamente sulla strada per il Lago Sebino e la Valle Camonica, venendo poi inglobata nel parco della famiglia Suardi. Il ciclo di affreschi va dalla narrazione del martirio di Santa Barbara ai miracoli di Santa Brigida, Santa Caterina e Santa Maria Maddalena. Grazie alla visita gui-data (di circa 45 minuti, organizzate dalla proloco di Trescore) si può apprezzare l’impor-tanza delle pitture e il significato profondo dell’attività artistica di Lorenzo Lotto.

Sì, d’accordo anche nella Bergamo moderna al piano e negli antichi borghi vi sono locali dove trascorrere piacevolmente le serate e aspettare la notte in compagnia. Ma a Bergamo alta la notte è diversa. L’antica città offre angoli di

grande suggestione da scovare a uno a uno tra luci e ombre, ma basta ritornare sulla strada principale, le vie gombito-colleoni, per godersi la vivacità delle vetrine dei negozi e dei locali, sempre più affollati. Nella città dentro le mura non ci sono solo monumenti ed opere d’arte: c’è un’atmosfera di piacevole animazione che aumenta via via che il cielo sopra le torri e le guglie dei campanili si fa sempre più buio. C’è uno splendido chiostro, quello dell’ex monastero di san Francesco, che ospita anche il Museo della storia di Bergamo, punto abituale d’incontro per tanti giovani. E non sono da perdere gli appuntamenti all’orto botanico dove in alcune sere si fa musica o si danno spettacoli, con in più una inconsueta veduta sulla Bergamo antica. Ma la magia della notte continua anche lungo gli spalti delle mura dove nei pressi di porta san giacomo, non molto lontano da porta sant’agostino, e sullo spalto della Fara ci si può sedere, bere una fresca birra, una bibita o un buon bicchiere di vino, mangiare anche. Il tutto in una atmosfera di grande cordialità e amicizia. Niente di meglio per una bella serata molto diversa dal consueto, con la straordinaria vista sulla distesa della pianura costellata di luci. è notte fonda ormai quando la gente incomincia a la-sciare l’antica città. Si gode il panorama mentre sfilano tanti picco-li paesi, un tempo abitati solo da pescatori e oggi luoghi di villeggiatura molto ricercati: l’aria è tiepida e profumata, comodamente seduti si chiacchiera con chi ci accompagna e con i vicini; poi arriva il momento dell’aperitivo e della cena con piatti tipici e raffinati, accompagnati da un’ottima scelta di vini. A Navigazione Lago d’Iseo boat seems to glide over the water. There’s not a ripple or a sound as the shores are lit up by a thousand lights, which increase in numbers and brightness as night falls. Is a magical spectacle. Passengers can take

in the views while many small villages, once inhabited only by fisherman and today po-pular holiday towns, pass by: the air is perfumed and warm. Comfortably seated, they chat with companions and those nearby; it’s then time for sundown drinks followed by a dinner of superb local dishes accompanied by an excellent selection of wines. All around the scenery continuously changes: on one side lies the Bergamask shore, on the other the Brescian shore. Suddenly the largest European inland island appears - Montisola. Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, por-ta nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo

Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, af-fiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassi-co, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Ales-sandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il sentiero-ne, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla chiesa di santo spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la chiesa di san bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il teatro donizet-ti affiancato dal monumento al grande musi-cista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle prin-cipali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni gene-re, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, Via San Tomaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’accademia carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittori-che italiane ed europee. Di fronte la galleria d’arte moderna e contemporanea è uti-lizzata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposizioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il museo bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

P orta nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lo-wer Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is

heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buil-dings, the Propylaea, was built in the ninete-enth century in the medieval town walls (de-molished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Berga-mo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new cen-tre is the sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso inclu-ding the provincial authority building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the church of santo spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the church of san bartolomeo (housing a fa-mous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the donizetti theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were establi-shed along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft stu-dios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the ninete-enth-century building housing the accademia carrara and Art Gallery with over two thou-sand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accade-mia is the modern and contemporary art gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The bernareggi museum of Sacred Art is situa-ted in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consiglia-mo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a cono-scere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla sta-zione di arrivo si esce subito sulla piazza mer-cato delle scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipica-mente medievale è il percorso di Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraver-sava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gom-bito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto alvise contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del palazzo della ra-gione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII se-colo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la cattedrale, il batti-stero, la cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la basilica romanica di santa maria maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran nu-mero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi tre-centeschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di gaetano donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Ber-gamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monaste-ro di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della cittadella viscontea.

first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the cathedral, the baptistery, the chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Col-leoni is entombed, and the Romanesque basi-lica of santa maria maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century fre-scoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of gaetano donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizet-ti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s hi-story unites the various museums: the rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti cittadella.
