FROM MY PERCH I wonder if many of you know anything about the national

Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which has spent the last five years looking at the history and ongoing effects of what were called the “Indian residential schools?”

It’s been a large part of my life for over two decades, including five-and-a-half years of full-time work.

For more than a century, the federal government and the historic mission churches together ran over 100 residential schools. The colonial aim was to break Indigenous societies, and to assimilate the children into the bottom of Canadian society—so Canada could get the land and resources. Our society was responsible for destroying families and communities, and driving students and their parents, siblings and descendants into emotional, spiritual and sexual dysfunction and addiction. It was a shameful process, which the rest of us continue to benefit from—materially. Spiritually, however, we are all—from multi-generational settlers to recent immigrants—impoverished by being part of that unjust exploitation. Over these past two-and-a half decades, my spirits have often been lifted as I have seen many, many Indigenous people take their own healing in their two hands and continue working through the layers of trauma we have caused them. I honour them for that. My own people—settlers—have been much less engaged. It’s hard to look your own social responsibility for such horrors in the face. But we only hurt ourselves if we don’t. The TRC will hold its closing event in Ottawa, May 31 to June 3. It’s free, we’re all invited, and Ottawa’s not far away. Check out the website (trc.ca), and attend if you can, even if only for a day. You won’t regret it, I promise. If you can’t go, the Anglican Church is posting one video a day of a survivor sharing her or his story, from May 31 to June 21 (National Aboriginal Day). You can read more at 22days.ca, and sign up to receive the videos. The ending of the TRC is still just the beginning of our society’s essential healing journey.

Boyd Island still under negotiation Pigeon Lake’s Big (Boyd) Island has a long and rich history. Many are aware of the island’s significance to First Nations, and have heard tales of Mossom Boyd, the “Lumber King of the Kawarthas,” and his “beefalo” herd that roamed the island at the turn of the last century. The property is currently owned by Mike Wilson, a successful businessperson and a known philanthropist. Mr. Wilson purchased the island in 2011. We are the planners retained by Mr. Wilson to obtain revisions to the existing 95-lot plan of subdivision on the property, proposed by Mattamy Homes in the 1990s and granted draft plan approval. An article in the April 17 issue of The Kawartha Promoter concerning the Boyd Island property included some incorrect information. On behalf of

Mr. Wilson, we wish to clarify the current status of an initiative involving the island.• Mr. Wilson is exploring the possibility of reducing

the number of lots that can be developed on the island from 95 to 10, retaining several of the building lots for his family, and donating the majority of the island to the Kawartha Land Trust (KLT).

• In turn, KLT has expressed an interest in acquiring the island. KLT is a registered charity dedicated to acquiring land and interests in land in the Kawarthas and maintaining it in a natural state.

• At this time there is no agreement between the owner and KLT concerning Boyd Island.

• If such a transfer of lands occurs, the Land Trust will look to the community to raise the funds necessary for ongoing management of the property to ensure that KLT can continue as responsible owners and stewards of the property in perpetuity.

• Consultations in the community on appropriate future uses of the island will go hand in hand with building the management fund for the island.

Thank you to The Promoter for your interest in the future of Boyd Island. We look forward to moving this project forward towards an ideal outcome for all involved.Heather Sadler, EcoVue Consulting Services Inc.Peterborough

Rural Transit a lifeline for Teagan My daughter Teagan, who is almost four years old, suffered two strokes in utero, and now has cerebral palsy, autism, hearing impairment, seizures and more. I do not have a drivers license and my husband works 1.5 hours away. The rural transit has allowed me to get to the many therapy and medical appointments we have each month, including occupational, physical, speech therapy, orthotist, etc. It also allows me to get out of the house to take her up to the Early Years centre, the mall and other regular fun things that she does not get to take part in often. They provide excellent opportunities for socialization, which she needs. There are few young children for her to play with in Thurstonia where we live. Recently, Teagan received an adapted stroller,

and the highlight of her week was being hoisted up in the wheelchair lift and strapped in. She has come to love the drivers and many passengers she’s had the opportunities to meet, as they have her. If the service is gone, we will have no way to get to any of these places and our only other available option will be to pay $20 each way to community care drivers, which in a single-income family with extraordinary expenses is simply not possible. We have not had the chance to share our input as we regularly travel to Durham, Toronto and North York for multiple other specialists. Each town hall meeting has been on days we were gone. I hope some of the people who say Rural Transit is a “money pit” will read this and understand that to us and to my little girl it is opportunity, a lifeline and a necessity. Ashley LymerThurstonia

16 trucks, and what do you get? On the short drive from Bobcaygeon to Lindsay I met 16 flatbed trucks and/or tandem trailers heading north back to various quarries. I presume that a similar number were heading south at the same time. Thus there was one huge, quarry truck for every kilometre of road. The energy stored in one of these loaded trucks, travelling at highway speed, is about 8 million joules. This has the destructive power of about 2 kg of TNT

(dynamite). We may, with confidence, expect a massive, fatal, and gruesome accident to occur within the next year or so. I hope the grieving relatives will sue the lawmakers who have permitted this state of affairs. Our elected officials are approving ecological thalidomide, which will leave Mother Nature crippled forever. In the process, they are destroying a way of life that is dear to the hearts of the local residents: avian, animal, and human. No amount of platitudes about job creation, a vital source of infrastructure materials, net benefit to society, and so on, alters the basic issue—which is greed. Someone gets rich; nature gets raped. Castles are built; villages are destroyed. Peter WeygangBobcayegon

Who has seen the wind projects? The Settlers Landing wind project approval was posted on the Environmental Registry on May 7. There were 2,330 comments posted on the Registry. This is the third project proposed on the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the second project of three proposed in the Manvers area of the City of Kawartha Lakes. Sumac Ridge, the first project proposed on the Oak Ridges Moraine, was approved in December

2013. It was appealed through the Environmental Review Tribunal process. The tribunal dismissed the appeal last February, but did find there was a risk of serious and irreversible harm and made a number of recommendations. The tribunal’s decision was appealed to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. To date, no decision on the appeal by the minister has been issued. The timing of these projects on the Oak Ridges Moraine coincides with a review of the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan with the province planning to strengthen protection of Natural Areas, protect agricultural land and put measures in place to address climate change. The issues of wind turbines has been a major issue at Town Halls being held to discuss changes to the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, the Greenbelt Plan, the Niagara Escarpment Plan and the Growth. Residents called for a moratorium, as was done before the Oak Ridges Moraine Plan was implemented in 2002. They pointed out that the protections in the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, when applied, do protect natural areas and agricultural land, and improve resiliency in the event of extreme climate change.Heather StaubleBethany

City HallOmemee waste-water treatment plant still failingBy Pat Warren After spending millions to solve the waste-water problem in Omemee, the new system is failing again. The issue is becoming quite the saga. Once upon a time, many years ago, City of Kawartha Lakes council decided not to take advice from engineers, who suggested Omemee’s waste water be piped to Lindsay for treatment. Instead, the council of the day felt that it would be less expensive and more environmentally friendly to treat the effluent in Omemee. The original engineering plan would also have included another pipe to bring potable water from Lindsay to Omemee. The village does not yet have a water plant. Now, in 2015, staff have had to access emergency funds (up to $400,000) to deal with another failure of the almost new plant. This new system, which is like a very large septic tank with pumps and pipes allowing waste to leach into the ground, was thought to be innovative. It replaced a spray irrigation system that was no longer able to service the community properly. The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change ordered the city to find a solution, and they thought

they had. But there have been breakdowns of pumps, pipes and switches, causing effluent overflow. The only member of the previous council to support the original piping solution was now-retired Councillor Andy Luff. He always said passionately that he felt the piping solution would be the most cost-efficient fix in the long term. During debate last week, Ward 6 Councillor Doug Elmslie said that maybe Councillor Luff had been right. Maybe he was. Staff will bring a report back to council, including how much money has been spent so far.

CKL mayor takes core service review to the people Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham has been bringing good news and bad as he barnstorms the city this month and next at a series of Town Hall Meetings to talk about the city’s Core Service Review. The bad news is the city faces an operating shortfall of about $10 million in 2016, a number of uncontrollable cost increases (including policing and insurance) are up the budget and eating into

reserves, and our infrastructure (arenas, bridges, etc.) is aging. The good news is that, with this Core Service Review, the mayor, council and city staff seem determined to take the bull by the tail and face the situation. Over the next couple of years, Letham explained at the Manvers and Bobcaygeon meetings, the city is taking a long and comprehensive look (without consultants) at what it has been doing, what it should be doing, what it should stop doing, and what it can do more efficiently and effectively.

All this is laid out clearly and concisely in an eight-page supplement printed in the April 17 Kawartha Promoter and mailed to households throughout the city (available from the city, The Promoter offices, or on the city website). At the Town Hall Meetings, Letham has been walking people through the supplement, responding to questions, and encouraging folks to send their “constructive” ideas to [email protected]. He repeatedly emphasized council’s commitment to make this an open process, and to invite as much public input as possible. The city can raise taxes, cut services, or some combination of the two, Letham suggested. “Doing nothing is not an option.” The review will start with reports from various staff department heads, and will include much back and forth among council, staff and citizens over the next year or so. The city has already received about 50 emails at the core review address. It will focus on services, not staffing, but service cuts will affect staff. About 16 percent of the city’s 1,500 staff will become eligible to retire over the next couple of years, so Letham expects staff cuts can be handled through attrition. “This is a new thing we’re doing,” said Letham at the Bobcaygeon meeting. “We’ve never gone here before.” In Manvers, he was even more adamant: “We can’t continue to push things off and leave the problems to our kids.” The challenge, of course, will be that no-one will want to lose their own services (or arenas). Council will need to make hard decisions that are both rational and compassionate, and not politically driven by insiders. Remaining Town Hall Meetings are scheduled for May 20 (Cambray Hall; 7 pm), May 28 (Victoria Park Armoury; 7 pm), June 6 (Coboconk CC; 2 pm), June 7 (Woodville Town Hall; 1 pm), June 13 (Burnt River CC; 10 am and Fenelon Falls CC; 2 pm).

Rural Transit loss hits most in need Life-long Lindsay resident Don Jardine, will be hard pressed to afford to visit his wife of 60 years in long-term care when CKL’s Rural Transit shuts down June 27. Don’s wife, Barbara, has been in the Fenelon Court Long-Term Care Centre

in Fenelon Falls for the last five months, suffering from dementia. Rural Transit has been a lifeline for the couple as he tries to visit her three times a week. The 86-year-old has been able to ride the Rural Transit route from Lindsay to Fenelon and back for $5 each way. And the dial-a-ride program picks him up at the door and delivers him directly to the facility. Buses run every two hours—for another month and a half. Macular degeneration has meant that Don, 86, has been unable to drive for the last five years. He says once the Rural Transit service ends on June 27—after an April 14 decision of council, he will have two options. “I found out this morning a limo will pick me

up to take me to Fenelon Court. The only thing is, they do not wait, so that means two times $24, or $48, for one visit.” A better option, but still two-and-a-half times the price of Rural Transit, is Community Care. “A Community Care driver will take me and wait for two-and-a-half hours for $24,” he says. “Those are the only choices I have after June 27.” He has already told his wife, he may only be able to manage to visit once a week.

Trent Lakes wants quarries to ‘prove need’By Pat Warren Trent Lakes Council wants Ontario to amend both its Aggregate Resources Act and its Provincial Policy Statement to make aggregate producers prove there is a need for their aggregates before the province issues them new extraction licences. Council voted May 4 to support a resolution to that effect that is being distributed by the Municipality of Halton Hills. “This is a good resolution and should be supported,” said Mayor Bev Matthews. She added she had recently visited Halton Hills, and it reminded her of the Bobcaygeon area, with all the anti-quarry signs. In 2005, Ontario eliminated the requirement for aggregate developers to prove need for their product when applying for an extraction licence. This has led to an increase in quarries across the province. Ontario is currently reviewing its Aggregate Resources Act, and many environmental groups, such as the David Suzuki Foundation, the Canadian Environmental Law Society and Gravel Watch Ontario, feel that the requirement to prove need should be reinstated. Guelph/Eramosa Township, near Halton Hills and bordering Milton by the Niagara Escarpment has a large quarry proposal (Hidden Quarry) on

the front burner that would see huge impacts on their community similar to the impacts that will effect Bobcaygeon if the Dewdney Mountain Farms Quarry proceeds. If all municipalities in the province support this resolution, Halton Hills hopes Ontario will listen, and reinstate policies to force aggregate producers to prove justification of need. These changes should result in a fairer process and a more sustainable industry, so this finite resource will continue to be available for future generations.

OMB quarry review bumped up a levelBy Glenna Burns By unanimous agreement, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) Review of Evidence on the Dewdney Mountain Farms Quarry has been bumped up a level. This means the OMB’s most senior chair, Shing Kan Wilson Lee, will hear the three issues of contention in the cited evidence from the initial OMB decision (Fight against quarry is still on, Village Voice, May 1, page 4). David White, lawyer for the quarry, made the request at the May 5 hearing in the board’s Toronto offices, citing OMB rule #109. All parties involved agreed to the change. Twelve Bobcaygeon-area citizens attended the hearing, along with an OMB lawyer and a court

reporter the appellants had hired themselves to ensure an accurate transcript of events. Trent Lakes CAO Lois O’Neill Jackson and Trent Lakes lawyer John Ewart also attended as observers. The appellants’ lawyer, Eric Gillespie, said that in his many years experience he had never seen an OMB lawyer at a board motion before. He added that he was encouraged by the unfolding of events at the OMB hearing, and by the wider community’s continuous support in opposing the quarry.

City has little say over quarry developmentBy Pat Warren The City of Kawartha Lakes is running into roadblocks as it tries to mitigate some of the impacts the aggregate industry has on its citizens by completing an Aggregate Secondary Plan. Council and staff started the secondary-plan process with some hope that it could affect real change to protect citizens and the environment while allowing aggregate development. But as it proceeds down a long, dusty road, the city is finding it has little power over aggregate development. Kawartha Lakes has the third largest deposit of aggregates in Ontario, and it seems everyone wants a piece of the pie. City planners nevertheless tried to put more safeguards into the plan, including regulating extraction below the water table, a transportation plan and haul-route criteria. Their wording and additions include the following:• Haul routes will be revised and updated with

adjacent municipalities to minimize any potential impacts from the volume of inter-municipal, aggregate-related truck traffic.

• To protect water, extraction below the water table is prohibited except when the city is satisfied that there won’t be any negative impacts.

• A Mitigation Trust Fund will be set-up to address a well-monitoring program and interference issues on local wells if extraction below the water table does occur.

• The city will require a Traffic Impact Study and a haul-route agreement in the approval process.

• Throughout the plan, the city has tried to use more forceful language by using “shall” instead of “may.”

These good additions are all likely to be challenged by the province, which has final say. People can voice their concerns to both the municipality and province. The draft plan and the changes are available on the city website. The Municipality of Trent Lakes, to the east of Bobcaygeon, also has numerous quarries operating and in development that will continue to affect everyone along municipal road 36 through both municipalities. A small group of residents continue to oppose quarry development in Trent [email protected]

Election InsightAs Canadians prepare for next October’s federal election, The Kawartha Promoter launches an ongoing Q-and-A series with the candidates for the federal riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. Each time we’ll feature the candidates’ responses to one question. Why not save these pieces for reference. We welcome suggested questions.

QUESTION: Should Canada develop a national drug plan?

Jamie Schmale, Conservative Party While I’m not against the creation of a national drug plan, I think we first need to look at making better use of existing dollars before we create a new bureaucracy. Currently, the federal government transfers money to the provinces and territories for health care. The provinces and territories are responsible for decisions on drug coverage. Creating economies of scale by encouraging the provinces to work together to make bulk purchases might be a more economical solution. A coalition of provinces may achieve the same outcome, but in a more time-efficient manner. I encourage the federal government to continue to work with the provinces to find the most effective, common-sense method to improve access and value. Our government has made historic health transfers that will reach $40 billion by 2020.

William MacCallum, Green Party Twenty percent of our health-care budget is spent on pharmaceuticals—and these costs are rising most quickly. The Green Party would immediately initiate a public inquiry into the issue. We would insist Health Canada enforce the law against industry-sponsored advertisements on prescription drugs.

The Green Party would work with the provinces to establish a crown corporation to bulk purchase and dispense prescription drugs. The Green Party would also consider a national Pharmacare program to ensure effective pharmaceuticals are available to all Canadians who need them. Encouraging competition within our strong pharmaceutical industry would help new drugs be developed. We also believe that focussing on the prevention of illnesses and medical conditions is more cost-effective than focussing on responding with drugs.

David Marquis, Liberal Party Prescription drugs are becoming increasingly expensive and inaccessible for Canadians. Since 2006, our out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs has grown from $3.9 billion to $7 billion. This is a huge burden on our families and seniors. The Liberal Party believes all Canadians should have access to affordable prescription drugs, regardless of where they live or their financial situation. High costs and inadequate drug coverage for millions of Canadians violate a basic principle of our health care system—that we all should have equal access to health care regardless of our background, physical needs, location, or income. Liberals have called on the government to work with the provinces to ensure that all Canadians have a drug plan that covers the catastrophic costs associated with major diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Mike Perry, New Democratic Party The NDP has long called for a national drug plan, which would help all of us, especially our seniors. We are the only country with public health care that does not have a national drug plan, and we are the world’s second most expensive country for prescription drugs. People in countries with universal pharmacare—like the United Kingdom, France and Australia—pay less for their drugs, and prices increase less. The Canadian Medical Association and the Health Insurance Association both support a national drug plan. Recent studies by public health officials, doctors and the Canadian Nurses’ Federation found that a national drug plan could boost the economy and save the private sector up to $11 billion. We can have a national drug plan that benefits us all with little cost or that even saves the government money.

NO NEED TO ‘WALK 500 MILES’ TO SEE PROCLAIMERS FILM

“Sunshine on Leith” is a toe-tapping, seat-dancing film that has been called “the best jukebox musical to come around in ages” (David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews).

Hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs 8:30 am-4:30 pm; Wed 8:30 am- 7:00 pm; Fri 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Films by the Falls is bringing it to Fenelon on May 26. Sunshine is a jubilant, heartfelt musical about the power of home, the hearth, family and love. It is the tale of one tight-knit family, and the three couples bound to it, as they go through the usual relationship joys and heartaches. And they do it all while singing the euphoric music of The Proclaimers—the Scottish band best known in Canada for their 1993 pop hit, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). In case this isn’t clear enough, be forewarned: this is a feel-good musical. If you don’t want to feel good and you don’t like music, stay away. Sunshine on Leith will screen at Fenelon Falls Secondary School at 7:30 pm on May 26 (doors open at 6:30). Tickets are $10, and you can get them at the door or in Fenelon at Sweet Bottoms Coffee, The Kawartha Store, or Salon 31, or My Favourite Things in Bobcaygeon.

COBOCONK, NORLAND & AREA NEWS

Hunger And Hope Christ Church, Coboconk, responded to a call for help from the Coboconk & Area Food Bank, and organized a food drive. For several years now, church members have been working together to help the hungry in the area. Parishioners bring food regularly on Sundays and, the church has designated the first Sunday of every month as Food Bank Sunday. Christ Church also plants a veggie garden every year to supplement its contribution. It is a community effort. The Lions Club built the garden wall and rototilled the plot, and Vacation Bible School children painted the logo “Good Neighbour Garden” on the stones. Just the presence of a Food Bank in our community, indicates a need and “prompts us to reach out to one another in love and caring for our neighbours,” says Jan Briggs McGowan of Christ Church. The Coboconk & Area Food Bank is a charitable organization helping qualified individuals and families in Burnt River, Coboconk, Kinmount, Kirkfield and Norland. To make a donation or to volunteer, please contact [email protected].

Local Projects Funded The Ontario Trillium Foundation is giving the Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce (CNACC) a grant for $122,500 to develop and deliver community programming.

Over the next two years, the CNACC will use the funds to build up Coboconk and Norland park facilities, for seasonal beautification in both towns, and to enhance both the Fresh Water Summit Festival and the Santa Claus parade. The chamber will also have a new storefront office, and staff time to carry out the funded projects.

Making our Communities Beautiful Volunteers on the CNACC Beautification Committee have been working hard to make Coboconk and Norland look great year-round with new winter decorations and summer projects. This summer, the committee is adding more bikes and flowers as well as brand new street banners

for both Coboconk and Norland. You will also see new picnic tables around town and a new gazebo/pergola in Riverside Park in Norland overlooking the dam. Funding from the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Beautification Program and the Ontario Trillium Foundation made the projects possible—along with the secret ingredient of energetic community volunteers.

New Chamber Office The Coboconk, Norland & Area Chamber of Commerce invites residents and visitors to drop into its new offices any time this summer. Thanks to the funding support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, CNACC has a new streetfront location beside Fire On The Rock and across from Shields Home Hardware. There is lots of great info about local businesses and tourism available seven days a week.

Directory of Business & Community The CNACC is producing a new “Directory of Local Business & Community” for Coboconk, Norland and surrounding areas. It will be available for distribution by the end of May. Directories will be mailed to all residents in Coboconk, Norland, Kirkfield, Burnt River and RR#1 Fenelon (includes Rosedale) addresses. Copies will be available at local businesses and the Chamber office throughout the spring and summer and through local cottage associations.

Rosedale residents RORing to go The Residents of Rosedale (calling themselves R.O.R.) are coming together in an effort to return their village to the beautiful, scenic tourist attraction of its youth. The group formed in the fall of 2014, after a construction company refurbishing the Rosedale bridge created an unsightly mess of material and equipment. After meeting with counsellors Doug Elmslie and Donna Villemaire they contacted MPP Laurie Scott (as it was an M.T.O. project). Within a very short period, the village was cleaned up. This lead the group to thinking about other ways the village could be improved; specifically restoring the parkette by the government dock,

which had become a mass of overgrown weeds and dumping ground for boaters using the boat launch and parking lot. On Saturday in Earth Week, the community gathered and spent the day cleaning up Rosedale and roadsides in the area. They collected 85 bags of garbage and four trailer loads of junk, and took it all to the landfill. The group is looking at future efforts to raise funds and apply for grants to reach other goals. Hopefully this will attract tourists.

WALLEYE TOURNEY HAS A NEW TRADITION—AT THE

BRIDGEBy Bob Hughes It’s the 35th anniversary this year of Bobcaygeon’s Canada-U.S. Walleye Tournament—but Ontario’s oldest live-release walleye competition seems to have developed a brand new tradition. What’s it all about? Well, suddenly last May—and with little fanfare—a goodly number of people showed up at something like 6:30 in the morning to cheer on the local and out-of-town competitors as they sailed their boats under the County Road 24 bridge into Sturgeon Lake.

Several Bobcaygeon Public School students also contributed a boatload of enthusiasm by bringing along a big banner that read “Good Luck.” All this, in turn, was photographed by the anglers, whose pictures, we’ve heard, made it into several competitive fishing-related publications and onto a lot of family-room walls. Here’s the “skinny.” Please support this latest Bobcaygeon tradition by coming out at 6:30 am on Saturday, May 24 and/or Sunday, May 25, ready to cheer on this year’s 270 competitors in 135 boats. Help remind our fishing visitors and locals that the rest of us hope they and the walleye have a good two days getting acquainted. Show them the friendliness that’s justifiably associated with our community. P.S.—Between 2 and 4 pm on both days, the competitors will return, their catches very much alive in specially-designed, on-board tanks, to be checked in at the modern weigh-in facilities at the Bobcaygeon Arena’s back door on Little Bob Channel. In addition to watching as these magnificent creatures are quickly weighed and released, there’ll be a sold-out trade show to peruse at your leisure. Finally, at around 4 pm on Sunday, on the tournament’s new stage in the arena, there’ll be the awards ceremony at which the lucky—or maybe it’s talented—participants will receive their cash and in-kind prizes, ideally to your cheers and applause.

GLOBUS FEATURES PAN AM MUSIC AND FOOD

Everything will be “jump up” on May 30, when Globus Theatre launches the first of its “four evenings of culture and cuisine” celebrating the flavours and sounds of the some of the participating countries in this summer’s Pan Am and Para Pan Am games. Globus is the only official “cultural partner” for the games in the Kawartha Lakes. The May 30 kickoff is entitled “Savour the Caribbean Flavour,” and features the calypso-style music of The Caribbean Dance Band. Three other Ignite events will follow: Canada Gold, a “good old Newfie Knees Up” on June 6; Pura Vida, featuring Latin American music and food on June 13, and Reggae Island Party with the band, Feeling The One Drop, on June 19. All four evenings will feature appropriate, toe-tapping music for dancing—and cultural food. Globus will also feature some of the country’s best comic improvisers on July 5 and 6 at the Pan Am Improve Games. You can take in the show only, or with an all-you-can-eat buffet. There will also be a series of cultural, creative and culinary workshops to keep the young ones entertained in the children’s Ignite Series. For times, pricing and more details—including the regular summer theatre season—see www.globustheatre.com.

FUN, FOOD AND MORE AT FAMILY GALA

Would you like to try Zumba, Drum Fit or Cha Cha? Child-care agencies in the City of Kawartha Lakes will offer all that and more, including food and entertainment, at the 11th Annual City of Kawartha Lakes Family Gala fundraiser. It all takes place from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, May 23, at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes, 107 Lindsay St. South in Lindsay. The event offers fun and games for children, a free lunch for everyone, and showcases the variety of resources and services available for families in Kawartha Lakes. It will also include educational displays and free activities like a clothing and toy give-away, lunch,

musical entertainment, literacy, crafts, and face painting. A number of local service agencies will present information about the services, programs and recreational opportunities they offer in the City of Kawartha Lakes for themselves and their children. She notes that a children’s item giveaway is a popular part of the Family Gala, since it allows people to pick up used clothing items and toys that are in good condition. In order to have a good selection available for the giveaway event, local residents are encouraged between now and May 21 to drop off used children’s items during regular business hours at: The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kawartha Lakes, Community Living Kawartha Lakes (205 McLaughlin Rd.) and the Ontario Early Years Centre (55 Mary St. west).

ROOTS AND RAMBLINGSA May checklist

By John Bick, Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society May is surely the busiest month for gardeners. This is especially true for Horticultural Society volunteers, who are not only tending their own gardens but are also preparing, planting and beautifying public spaces in their communities. While essential, the May checklist can seem endless:

Bobcaygeon’s biggest gardening event is our annual Plant Sale. This year it is on Saturday, May 30 starting at 9 am at Kawartha Settlers’ Village on Dunn Street. This is a fund raiser to help us with our community projects. Hundreds of locally-grown plants donated from area gardens or garden centres have been re-potted by our volunteers. They have been acclimatized to wind, heat, cold, drought and wet weather.

CONCERT CELEBRATES OUR BEAUTIFUL EARTH

Missa Gaia (Earth Mass) composer Paul Winter says he “envisioned a celebration that was both ecumenical and ecological, one that would embrace all life on earth.” So he turned to folk, gospel, jazz and classical music sources for inspiration, and used texts from St. Francis of Assisi, the Book of Job, and the Gospels. The result is a musical delight and a beautiful celebration of the earth. Now, the Kawartha Lakes Singers are bringing the Missa Gaia to Lindsay’s Cambridge Street United Church—on Sunday, May 31 at 2:30 pm. The Missa Gaia concert will feature guest vocalist Barb Monahan and a select group of

By now clumps of perennials should have been divided and shrubs or trees planted. Most vegetable seeds such as chard, beets, turnip, carrot and parsnip should be in the ground. Peas, radish and lettuce planted in late April will likely have germinated although they can be planted every 14 days until midsummer. It’s also time to put in summer bulbs, such as callas, dahlias, caladium and gladioli. Only when the danger of frost has passed, can tender vegetables and annual flowers, such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, petunias, marigolds, zinnias and geraniums be left outside.Be sure to use damp days to dig out the weeds that have already got a good start. Leave spring-bulb foliage alone to die down naturally. Green leaves are needed to manufacture sugars that the bulb needs to store and use for

next year’s flowering. It is fine, however, to remove spent flower stalks as soon as the blooms are done.

COBY PILOT PROJECT SMELLS LIKE A WINNER

Sewage lagoon operators are optimistic about a new sewage-treatment system recently installed at the Coboconk Waste Stabilization Pond that can eliminate lagoon odours and reduce sludge to increase treatment capacity. Within only days of start-up, the Coboconk lagoon experienced an increase in oxygen levels to potentially eliminate odours. WCI Environmental Solu-tions installed the EOS 2000 System in Coboconk on April 15, in co-operation with the Water Research and Innovation Network (WRAIN), the Ontario Clean Water Agency and the City of Kawartha Lakes. The EOS 2000 is a compact, solar-powered, energy-wave generator that helps increase dissolved oxygen in still waters, in turn decreasing odours. Most treatment lagoons struggle to achieve sufficient oxygen levels with conventional aerators. The reduced sludge volume should also help restore treatment capacity in the lagoon and extend intervals between lagoon cleaning cycles by two or three times. The system is in place for the next two months as part of a pilot project offering Kawartha Lakes the opportunity to try the new technology at no cost to citizens, says Numair Uppal, Economic Development Officer with WRAIN. “This project also brings

attention to Kawartha Lakes as a centre of innovation for water technology.” WRAIN plays an important role in solving water problems within our community and

continues to build relationships with companies such as WCI Environmental. Future projects for WRAIN include helping WCI develop a fertilizer-production project

RECOvERING A HIDDEN PAST

—Guest Column— By Nancy Thurston Several years ago I organized a big family reunion. I had done the family tree earlier with my father who was able to pass on the stories he had grown up with. Names and dates came alive in an appreciation of a culture and community. But I gradually became aware that this culture had pushed out another culture. I needed to know more. Certainly my previous education was sorely lacking a most essential chapter. What may have been lost, or intentionally omitted, in the family history was my great grandmother’s origin. She was from the Rice Lake area where there are two First Nation communities, Hiawatha and Alderville. (In marrying a white man, a woman would have lost her status, as would her children.) Looking at my grandfather, his brothers and

sisters, my father and my brothers, clues are there. High cheekbones, very dark abundant hair, no baldness, hairless bodies, dark eyes and olive complexions. Their deep summer tans so beautiful (my daughter and my granddaughter too). I talked to two of my cousins. A whole piece of their lives fell into place. Oh yes, of course, why didn’t we know this? And yes, something in me does know. Wow. I am driven to know more of First Nations cultures. I visit with Murray Whetung of Curve Lake First Nation. He and his family welcome me with twinkling eyes, humour and grace (reminds me of my father). They share. I soak up every crumb. I am thirsty to know. I read everything I can find: The Inconvenient Indian, The Comeback, and others, so I can try and understand some of that culture. Ten thousand years of living on Turtle Island (North America) leaving barely a trace. The empire builders descend. Culture meets culture. At first the European relies upon the First Peoples for their very existence (to keep from freezing and starving). Then comes trading, until co-operation gets in the way of progress. Indigenous culture becomes inconvenient, something to be eradicated. Where once nature was one, now dominance rises at every turn. Seven generations of attempted assimilation of strong cultures follows. The eighth generation rises now with knowledge,

pride and courage, and I am encouraged to believe our environment may once again be treasured as our home, cared for, nurtured back to health and more. Question? How do cultures coexist in respect and with the knowledge that we need to work together for the very essentials of life to continue on this planet? This year the Heritage Exhibit at the Kinmount Fair, Sept. 4-6, will feature First Peoples (Anishnaabe). Do you want your story told too? Please contact me through [email protected].

TRY ‘FOREST BATHING’ FOR YOUR HEALTH

Anyone who has spent time in a forest will not be surprised to learn that walking among trees has health benefits. According to Mother Earth News, “studies have confirmed that spending time within a forest setting can reduce psychological stress, depressive symptoms, and hostility, while at the same time improving sleep and increasing both vigor and a

feeling of liveliness,” reports Mother Earth News. In Japan, they call it Shinrin-yoku or “forest bathing.” There, health-care professionals will often encourage people to get out in the woods. Just the smell of trees has health benefits. “Chemicals secreted by trees, known as phytoncides, have been linked with improved immune defense as well as a reduction in anxiety and increase in pain threshold,” reports Slate. Phytoncides are antimicrobial compounds derived from plants that prevent them from rotting or being eaten by some insects and animals. Spices, onion, garlic, tea tree, oak, cedar, locust, pine and many other plants give off more than 5,000 different phytoncides as defence against bacteria, fungi and insects. Many of them are widely used in Russian, Ukrainian, Chinese and Japanese medicine. Studies also show that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who play in a green, outdoor environment rather than an indoor, constructed environment, show a decrease in their symptoms. Another study showed that Londoners who live near trees take fewer antidepressants. Of course, being in a forest also leads to exercise, a proven treatment for many ailments including fatigue, depression, anxiety and obesity. Combining the benefits of movement with the benefits of a forest setting is an extra-strong prescription for many health issues. If there is one good thing you’re going to do for yourself today, perhaps it should be heading out the door to go take a walk in one of the Kawartha region’s many beautiful forests.

A COACH CAN HELP YOU LIvE WITH CANCER

If you or a loved one has ever been diagnosed with cancer, you know how overwhelming and frightening it can be, says Ildiko Nanai. “Cancer is a multifocal disease,” she explains. “Many factors contribute to its development,” and

Page 35: The Kawartha Promoter, May 15 2015

35May 15, 2015 - The Kawartha Promoter

treating it successfully will require a variety of approaches. Just trying to understand the medical aspects and navigate through conventional treatment options is often confusing, intimidating and emotionally draining. Ildiko, a registered nurse and certified professional cancer coach, is offering a series of three, free Cancer Support Workshops at the Lindsay library, beginning Wednesday, May 27. Her focus will be to provide “integrative support” to improve cancer patients’ lives. In any field, coaching focuses on concrete issues to achieve a specific outcome. In the case of cancer, the coach addresses the critical components that cancer patients face before, during and after their journey with the disease. Even with the best intentions, the medical team members may find themselves pressed for time in dealing with all areas of the patient’s needs and concerns. They may not be able to adequately address important aspects such as support, coping, education and reassurance. Cancer coaches share expert knowledge, information and resources to help maximize the benefits of cancer treatment (and prevention) and to avoid recurrence. They can help patients develop a therapeutic plan, and create an optimal environment for success. This includes—self-risk assessment, nutrition, lifestyle or environmental modifications, or mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Certified Professional Cancer Coaches are accredited by the National Association of Professional Cancer Coaches, a registered federal non-profit organization. Ildiko’s workshops will include the following sessions:• May 27—Self-Risk Assessment: Natural Strategies to

Boosting Resistance to Cancer Initiation, Promotion & Recurrence

and the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit will join local pharmacists at Paramedics In The Park to receive—and safely dispose of—prescription drugs that you no longer require. There will also be displays of various health and emergency services—and a barbecue.

POvERTY ALSO CAUSES POOR HEALTH

Poverty is a major but reversible factor causing poor health, Dr. Ariella Zbar, a Medical Resident with the Peterborough County-City Health Unit told a group of 19 local doctors at a workshop earlier

this month. “The link between poor health outcomes and poverty are well known, so helping doctors connect their patients with vital social services is essential and can ultimately benefit the entire community,” said Zbar. The Health Unit and the Ontario College of Family Physicians offered the half-day workshop to help family doctors:• Explore a simple three-step, primary-care approach

to helping patients living in poverty;• Develop an understanding of the provincial

and federal income-security systems, including benefits for children, working-age adults, people with disabilities, and seniors;

• Learn about three user-friendly, web-based resources to navigate income-support systems in clinical practice, and become familiar with one, Canada Benefits;

• Explore and critique the Ontario Disability Support Program in depth;

• Consider ethical challenges that arise in helping patients navigate the income-security system.

Poverty can only be reduced through “a comprehensive, community-wide approach,” said Zbar, including more affordable housing, and mental-health and income-support programs, and educating healthcare providers to help their patients access existing programs.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Oh, Aquarius. The workplace drama is getting too much. Step out of the fray and keep your nose clean. This isn’t to say you must totally isolate yourself—just make sure you are not knee-deep in the commotion.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Regarding your money situation, Pisces: stay within your means when contemplating purchases. Put aside a little bit each pay cheque. It all makes monetary—and common—sense.

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Opportunities are arriving, even as you read this, Aries. Especially on May 22, be ready to take a chance and check out some new prospects, and don’t hold back. When opportunity knocks, open the door.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Someone is in need of your support right now, Taurus. Do not begrudge them your time. Perhaps, some day, they will return the favour. Then again, it is always nice to do something for someone, even when there is no reward in sight.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) A potential new love interest will be taking up most of your time and thoughts in the near future, Gemini. Your head may be in the clouds, but try to keep your feet on the ground.

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) Trust is not always an easy option. People must earn it. You, Cancer, know this better than most because you have been betrayed. Please don’t let this mar your concept of human nature. There are still good people in the world.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) Native Americans believe your birth date is the first drum beat of your ceremonial dance of life. You make your way through life in step with your animal counterpart. Leo, it is therefore no co-incidence that your animal is The Lion. Your strength, your courage,

your fierceness in the face of adversity, are all evident in your “dance of life.”

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) “Pearls don’t lie on the seashore. If you want one, you must dive for it”—Chinese proverb. And so, dear Virgo, you, too, must plunge, jump, leap, and even free-fall for whatever you wish.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Rest to avoid illness, Libra. Don’t overtax yourself, either physically or mentally, at this time. You, alone, know what your body can bear. Health matters.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) Try to stay positive and optimistic during the less-than-ideal conditions you may be facing, dear Scorpio. Attitude makes the difference between failure and success.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) A new adventure awaits you, Sag. Lucky you. Head on out and don’t look back.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Death—it shadows our life from the moment we are born, powerfully and painfully. But there is no life without death. Savor each day, each moment, you now have, Capricorn. Be kind. Be gentle. Don’t waste a single, precious drop of your being.

‘THE KING’ WILL ROCK CAYGEON

Bobcaygeon will host the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll on June 4, when world champion Elvis tribute artist Tim “E” Hendry performs at the Bobcaygeon Lions Club Hall. Partial proceeds from the show

will help support the Lions Club. “Tim has become our Elvis of choice in recent years as we’ve enjoyed following his meteoric rise within the Elvis-tribute-artist world,” says the show’s producer, Paul Coulter of Springtime Entertainment. Hendry has loved Elvis since his father Diamond Jim Hendry introduced him to the music of the King at a very young age. Family and friends convinced him to make his first Elvis tribute debut in 2003. Since then, Tim’s Elvis portrayal has become one of the most sought after acts in North America. He packed Lindsay’s Academy Theatre last December for his “Christmas with the King” concert. His fan base has been growing exponentially over the past 12 years as a result of his achievements, especially since he was crowned 2013/14 King of the World Elvis Tribute Artist Champion last Aug. 16 in Memphis. Hendry was also proclaimed Grand Champion

at the Georgia Elvis Festival in 2015, Toronto’s Flaming Star Festival in 2014, the 2013 Ronny Craig’s Elvis Explosion in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and the 2010 Collingwood Elvis Festival. “Tim’s first-person portrayal of Elvis, along with his outstanding presentation skills (voice, gestures, dance moves) ,” says Coulter, help audience members feel like they are “really seeing and hearing Elvis. His admiration and respect for Elvis and his music is reflected in every performance.” Besides being an outstanding singer, Tim is also an accomplished drummer and guitarist. Only 140 tickets are available for the Lions Club venue in Bobcaygeon, so get them in advance for $23 at Luigi’s Pizzeria, Cosmos Salon & Spa, or the Lions Club during Monday night bingo. Or order by phone at 705-738-1666. The Lions will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Bobcaygeon Food Bank. Please be generous.
