President’s ReportThe

Keith McCraw

This is my first report in the new ENCORE magazine and I hope members are enjoying the new format. We are now able to include more information on what’s happening at the club each quarter and our intention is to keep the members fully informed and entertained with this publication. As we approach the summer months there is so much coming up at the club – we hope you can enjoy a meal, see a show or just visit the club in the next three months.

GLORY GLORY TO SOUTH SYDNEYWhat a year it was for the Bunnies and whilst we didn’t make it to the Grand Final this year, the Rabbitohs certainly gave their supporters one hell of a ride. Our players made us all proud to be Souths supporters and every opposition team knew they were in for a tough match when we played them. The club is going forward in every way in the last two years, with Head Coach Michael Maguire instilling a great culture within the club. On behalf of the Board of Directors, management and staff of the club I want to publicly thank everyone involved with the Rabbitohs for a great year and I’m already looking forward to Round One next year!

The Juniors CalcuttaOne of my favourite events at the club each year is the Juniors monster Calcutta on Sunday 3rd November. This Calcutta has become the number one Calcutta in the Eastern suburbs with last year’s prize pool of over $41,000 being a record! It’s on again this year with 2KY’s Greg Radley in charge of proceedings and as always it’s best to pre-purchase your tickets before the day to get the 2 for 1 special. See you there.

Remembrance DayRemembrance Day is always an important day every year and the Maroubra RSL sub branch will be holding their annual service opposite the Juniors at The Junction. This is a significant day for many people in our community and anyone can attend and pay their respects. Details page 40.

CEO’s ReportThe

Geoff Knight

It is hard to believe that we are once again talking about the end of the year and New Year’s Eve festivities. The year has flown by and now we are preparing for 2014. The club has had a good year with solid trading and patronage, producing an excellent result overall. We are in a consolidation process at the moment with changes and improvements planned in the near future. It’s an exciting time to be involved with the club and we will keep our members up to date in the coming months.

New PromotionsThe club is constantly evolving with new initiatives, events and promotions for our members. Launching shortly will be our new Ultim8 rewards program which features a reloadable debit card that members can utilise to spend their rewards points and promotion winnings at any retailer that accepts EFTPOS. This is one of the most exciting programs that the club has undertaken in many years and we are sure our members will love the flexibility it offers.

Sundeck BrasserieThe Sundeck Brasserie is also putting a new series of daily specials for each day or night of the week. These will provide even better value for our members during these specified times. We are also launching a “Win Back Your Meal” promotion on Wednesday nights where members of the club can win back the price of their meal. For full information please refer to pages 10 & 11 of this magazine.

Be Water WiseWith summer on our doorstep we thought it was great time to do a feature on all the “Learn to Swim” Classes that are run at the club. We have several groups operating out of our 25m pool in the gym and full details are on pages 32-33.

Best regards,

Geoff Knight Chief Executive Officer

With just one game standing between Souths and their first grand final appearance 42 years, hopes were dashed, when the Bunnies went down to a tried and tested Manly side in the third round of the finals - but not without a fight!

Having just received the heartbreaking news that coach, Michael Maguire’s mother had passed away, the boys took the field sporting black arm bands in her honour. They started strong, converting two tries and earning 14-0 lead in the early minutes and seeming to dominate defensively for the majority of the first half. But Manly’s ability and finals experience proved too much for the Bunnies. A string of maroon and white tries in the second half sealed the Rabbitohs’ fate, resulting in a 30-20 loss to the Sea Eagles.

In an emotional post-match press conference, Maguire credited their opponents and acknowledged that the Bunnies still have room for improvement.

“We played against a very experienced team – a very resilient team. Our boys fought very gallantly, but unfortunately we weren’t able to execute on certain plays. We’ve got to get stronger from this as a team and as a club, and we’ve got to go on to the next chapter.”

While disappointment in the Burrow at missing out on a Grand Final spot was palpable, Rabbitohs supporters are among the most dedicated, passionate and resilient in the country. Never ones to dwell on the negative, fans have instead chosen to highlight the stellar performance of the team this year and

are focusing their positive energy on the 2014 season. Die hard Bunnies fan, Jamie-Lee Dixon sums it up perfectly in ‘A Members Perspective - FW4’ on the Rabbitohs website:

“These men know the rawness of the pain of just missing out and will give everything they have got to be sure it does not happen again. I can wait just a little longer for the quest for 21 to be accomplished, and I look forward to watching it with even more Members next year.”

While their season ended earlier than they would have liked, there’s no denying the Bunnies are developing a formidable squad. Over the last two seasons, the team have produced the some best results the club has seen in over four decades. Last year’s exit in

Glory, Glory to South Sydney!

South Sydney Rabbitohs are one of the oldest and most successful clubs in NRL history, having won 20 first grade premierships; more than any other club to date. Cardinal and myrtle supporters everywhere had hoped this year would end the drought and increase that number, but it was not to be.

week two of the finals was the highest finish the club had earned since their last Grand Final win in 1971. This year, they improved on that result, advancing to finals round three and only missing out on the minor premiership title by the smallest of margins.

The Bunnies’ brilliant 2013 season was celebrated at the Dally M Awards in early October. Nominations in the Rabbitohs camp were plentiful, with 10 players receiving nomination honours, some more than one, and Maguire in the running for Coach of the Year. Of those nominations, the Bunnies took home four awards; Greg Inglis picked up the Fullback of the Year award as well as the Provan-Summons Medal; George Burgess collected the Rookie of the Year award; and the whole Burgess family took home the Peter Frilingos Memorial Award for the Headline Moment of the Year.

As well as the Dally M results, the fact that eight players have been selected for their respective international squads

for the 2013 World Cup, highlight the strength and skill within the Rabbitohs team. And with the unwavering support of their fans, they are only going to get stronger and hungrier for that 21st premiership title.

So, while the 2013 season didn’t end quite how the dedicated players, support staff and fans had hoped, there is still a lot to celebrate and plenty of reasons to be proud. With two top eight finishes in as many years, the Bunnies’ future looks bright. And if the boys keep improving as they have been, hopes are high that next year could be the year of the Rabbit!

Amber Lawrence

Local country music singer Amber Lawrence is back at The Juniors this November with good friend and X Factor 2012 runner-up contestant, Jason Owen to perform their Island’s In The Stream Tour.

For Amber it all started almost 15 years ago when her music teacher told her to buy an album she’d never heard before. The CD she purchased was - yes you guessed it - a country music album. She loved it and has been adding to that same country music collection ever since and never looked back.

Amber draws on many sources of inspiration when writing songs like heartbreak, story telling, love, joy, fun and core family values like loyalty. She isn’t considered a typical country singer, coming from the city for instance, but nevertheless she always builds rapport and empathy with her audiences.

“People think there’s a big difference between country people and city people but there really isn’t.

“At the end of the day we all want the same things and that’s what I write about, things that are common to all of us,” she said.

Since hitting the country music scene Amber has had great success with five Golden Guitar nominations, six number one songs, the Horizon award, TV performances on major shows like Mornings with Kerri-Anne and Spicks & Specks, plus tours and stage appearances with artists including Adam Harvey, Beccy Cole, Melinda Schneider and Lee Kernaghan.

A lot of artists will never admit that they like the feeling of being on stage but for Amber it’s pretty much the number one reason she does this. She loves the life the entertainment industry has brought her and said the feeling of performing is always thrilling.

“I do love performing that’s what drives me as a musician and with country music you get a sense of intimacy.

“You can get that feeling with the audience and you can share, be real and tell life stories… you can be you rather than trying to be a product and I really love it,” she said.

Amber has performed in many venues and festivals all over Australia. Her two favourite places however are outdoor festivals and of course The Juniors.

“I love performing at The Juniors, I can look out and anyone in my life, from school, hairdressers, spray tanning ladies to physiotherapists, they are all there in the audience so it’s really cool,” she said.

Amber said she’s constantly moved by the thoughtful gestures and messages passed on from her fans.

“ A 15-year-old girl said ‘the man across the street’ is the first country song she’d ever heard and because of that she wants to be a country singer.”

“Another couple said they’d seen my show five times and that my music helps them through their hard times,” she said.

Amber admits that there are times when she questions her career and thinks it’s a really hard job. But hearing beautiful stories from fans never fails to give her a morale boost and remind her why her job is constantly rewarding.

“Even if it’s just one person who does that or says that, it makes you feel like your job is worthwhile,” she said.

Amber said artists who’ve done it the long and hard way really inspire her. Those that kept having doors closed in their faces, but kept going and eventually their perseverance paid off.

“Kasey Chambers is one of those at the top and no one would know what hard yards she went through before she made it, so it’s inspiring to know.

“People like that have been in this business for 20 years, so it makes me feel like a beginner, like I’ve got lots ahead of me,” she said.

With three successful albums under her belt, Amber is now working on her fourth album, conveniently dubbed, “4”.

“I‘ve been in Nashville to write about 20 songs and I need to write another 10 and then narrow it down.

“I think the 4th album is going to be really raw and honest, ‘3’ was a positive ‘believe in yourself’ album I think this one will be a little bit more ‘life is not always perfect’ kind of album which just reflects where you are in your life,” she said.

After only 10 years in the industry, former accountant turned country music success Amber Lawrence is only getting started. It’s hard to believe considering her already impressive collection of accolades. Our own Entertainment Reporter, Brad Smith sat down with Amber recently and got the scoop on what inspires her, why she loves to perform and what she’s cooking up for the future.

for 6 months who would you want with you?

b) Ryan Gosling – I know who I should

5. If you could be any super hero who would

you want to be?

I would like to have superpowers of Pink

As we were winding up we asked Amber

“The Juniors Final Five”, where we’ve concocted

some fun and revealing questions. We plan to continue

this tradition, but read on to see how Amber answered:

Back into the swim of things…

Summer is getting closer and pools and beaches will be filled with locals. What better way to scrub up on your water safety knowledge and introduce your children to water safety, than swimming lessons! Learning to swim at the Juniors is a great way to get your child comfortable and confident in the water. But we don’t just teach the little ones. It’s never too late to learn to swim at the Juniors, as most of the swim schools at our gym cater to adults as well. They also provide swim lessons for special needs adults and children either one on one or with a buddy if they feel they would benefit from team learning.

The swim schools provided through the Juniors are: In The Deep; Little Heroes Swim Academy; Weekend Learn To Swim; and Chad’s Squads. These lessons are taught by highly trained professionals who are Austswim and Swim Australia qualified, who are all so passionate about teaching their students how to swim and watching them develop their skills.

In The Deep Swim School has been operating from The Juniors for over six years and we are a passionate team who aim high in all we do. Teaching children and being part of the community is a great honour and we will do all it takes to support all of our students and families to aim high and develop into skilled and confident swimmers. Our staff are Austswim and Swim Australia qualified and all squad teachers hold certification in teaching competitive strokes.

We are fortunate enough to specialise in every area of swimming and have highly qualified team of experts to maintain and develop the highest standards of instruction across all levels in our program.

Little Heroes Swim Academy is a non-profit organisation providing subsidised lessons for children with Special Needs. We run a Learn-to-Swim program with a focus on drowning prevention, teaching our students first how not to drown, then how to swim. LHSA has a holistic approach to teaching and maintains that a child will learn best when relaxed and happy.

Little Heroes Swim Academy also offers dry presentations on drowning prevention and safer practices and also beach awareness for school and community groups looking to raise awareness and educate those most in need. We believe educating the family unit is as important as the lessons their children receive with us.

Apart from fighting the fight against drowning prevention, we teach for moments. The first

time a parent sees their baby rise out of the water from submersion. The moment a child with special needs realises that they can stand in the pool- and the giddy excitement that follows. The smile of a child, who, on land is dependent on others in every way, but in the water, finds freedom. These moments are that we live for.
