No Bull…well, a bit at the end…

Right…so you might have noticed a new newspa-

per on the streets (or under the budgie…) that we

are now producing? ‘The Courier’ is our effort to

bring some good, upbeat and fresh news to the

expats on the Costa Blanca and to present it in a

professional and interesting way – a bit like this

mag really. If you’ve not read it and only eaten

chips out of it then give it a go – you never know,

you might enjoy it.

We know things are a lot quieter at the moment

and many businesses are struggling to survive,

let alone be able to afford to advertise. What we

are trying to do is offer an economic alternative

for businesses to get their message across to a

lot more people – for a lot less. JD customers are

already making the most of the reduced costs of

advertising in both the magazine and The Courier

which is saving many of them the fortune that

they used to pay by advertising elsewhere too.

By putting together the most experienced produc-

tion team in newspapers on the Costa Blanca we

can now provide top quality reporting, photogra-

phy and features by people who RE-

ALLY know what they are doing. The

sales team have all been involved

in newspapers for years (Spain and

UK) and can always

find a solution for

your advertising

needs – and one

that works!

We’ll report news

where, and when,

it happens

and, I’ll

say sorry to all the

charities in advance,

but our front page

won’t ever be the opening of a charity

shop (for example). We’ll be offering REAL news

by REAL reporters who have been around news-

papers for a long time.

If you’re in business and looking to get your mes-

sage across through TWO of the most popular

publications on the Coast why not give us a ring

and find out just how much you could save by

switching to Jungle Drums and The Courier. The

numbers or email are all listed in this magazine

so give us a call – and start saving!

Other than that JD will be at BSA school in Ali-

cante again this month to kick off a new incentive

for youngsters who have an idea to start a busi-

ness. Run along the lines of BBC’s Dragons Den,

our version for school kids, ‘The Bull Ring’ will

see five top business people from the region help-

ing the boys and girls make their idea become a

real business. ‘The Bull Ring’ will then move on to

other schools around the region to help encour-

age creativity in the possible next generation of

business people and from what we’ve seen so far,

the future’s in good hands.

That’s all for this month enjoy the maga-

zine and The Courier and I’ll have a chat

again next month…thanks for

listening, Dave x

Fiscal help...

This question does come up frequently. When only a minor alteration is made to the house many do not imagine they would need to apply for a plan-ning permission. And times and times I have heard that the company in charge of carrying out the alteration assured the enquirer no planning permis-sion would be necessary.

This is not true and a few distinctions are to be taken into consideration as to the different obliga-tions when undertaking any building work.

For minor building alterations, i.e. new floor and wall tiling, you do not need to get permission from your neighbour (or existing community) but, by law, you do need a planning permission for minor works, called the obra menor. The application is a sim-ple procedure at the “urbanismo” department of your local town hall and will be a small percentage on the total estimate for the works to be undertaken.

If you are part of a community / urbanisation, another minor alteration - let us say replacing old windows with new ones in green aluminium- would require the above planning permission for minor works and also the permission from your commu-nity if the rest of the windows in the urbanisation were in white. This would not have to be shown in writing when you are applying for the permission. The council would grant the permission always on the proviso that no objections are made by the community or neighbours.

For anyone living in an urbanisation and wishing to undertake an alteration that has already passed the majority vote favourably at a meeting, a copy of the recorded minutes would always be a good back-up but not necessary unless requested.

And as regards to a planning permission for major works, the obra mayor, i.e. alterations that affect the structure, these require a project drafted by an architect to be presented along with the applica-tion for the planning permission. If a neighbour had valid reasons for complaint and objected to the said alteration, the money spent on the above would be wasted.

Is a planning permission necessary? andrea

On Sunday the 6th February on a beautiful

clear day a group of us went into the Sierra del

Maigmo for what I was told would be a strenu-

ous but rewarding walk. But before I go into the

walk I would just like to make mention of one of

the guys I walk with.

Lenny is a quiet unassuming character, but

when you realise what he has been through in

the last year you begin to understand the char-

acter of the man,his wife Pat and son Neil.

You see Neil was with the Royal Sussex Regi-

ment in Afghanistan doing that most dangerous

of duties, bomb disposal. Last year on his first

tour Neil was blown up by an IED (Improvised

Explosive Device). He lost both legs, the sight of

one eye, and scores of other injuries caused by

whatever these bombs are packed with.

For weeks Lenny and Pat were at their son’s

bedside fearing the worse, but thanks to won-

derful medical staff and Neil’s incredible spirit

and strength of character he has survived. With

the fantastic support of the military (Lenny’s

own words) Neil is adapting to his new life.

So next time we wake up and its raining and

we have received an estimated bill from Iber-

drola and the euro has gone down a couple of

points,lets just think on......

Back to the walk. We all met at the Xirau Ser-

vice Station on the A7 Alicante to Alcoi. It

was 9.30 and we went into the cafe

for coffee. Now if someone had

told me that

you

could get liver and onions for Sunday breakfast!

Well a couple were having it with crusty bread

and the smell was delicious, one of those “AAH

Bisto” moments.

This Service Station has a large car-park and

I understand its where you can leave your car

for free (unlike the UK where you would have

to pay a parking fee) and walk from there down

to the Tibi Embalse. Our walk was not down but

a drive away, going across the A7 and up into

the hills and the recreational areas of the Sierra

del Maigmo. The road weaved up through a

magnificent forest with the mountains peeking

through the trees against a clear blue sky.

The Costa Blanca has some of the best way-

marked paths in the country. The system of

marking is:

GR’s (Gran Recorridos) these are the long dis-

tance paths marked with red and white strips.

SL’s (Senderos Locales) marked green and

white,usually less than 10kms long

PR’s (Pequenos Recorridos) “short walks” taking

between one and two days and marked yellow

and white. Combinations of these PR’s can be

used to make circular walks of almost any kind

of distance you want.

Our walk took us up through the forest on good

paths until we got to the foot of the first sum-

mit we had to reach. Then it was a very steep

ascent up loose scree. This was where

our group of 10 split into two find-

ing different

ways to the top. I am new to walking the Costa

Blanca mountains and every view has the WOW

factor for me,but when we reached the first

peak there was more than me going WOW! The

views all around were magnificent,on one side

was the coast in the distance and on all the

other sides fantastic views of the Sierras which

the more knowledgeable of our company were

naming. I was just in awe thinking that I’ve got

a lot of walking ahead of me.

As we got to the top,and it was a strenuous

climb,I could hear children laughing and then

you see the car-park. So these views are avail-

able for everyone.

A walk along the ridge marvelling at the views

and meeting quite a few Spanish walkers and

then the descent on good paths meandering

through the forest. Towards the end of the walk

a Golden Eagle put on a show for us, soaring

in the crystal clear sky. I thought how lucky

we are with all this for free and right on our

doorsteps.

It was one of those walks and days that you

didn’t want to end. But as all walkers I have

come across in a variety of countries you relive

the walk again over an ice-cold beer....or two.

Hi, I’d just like to comment on your opening story “pull-ing the wrong strings” in your N 80 edition. I am gay and I would like to know why a stereotype was used? Just for those who go round with their eyes closed and head in the sand, not all gays are the same, we are as diverse as any other community. I do not like Eu-rovision, I only like one or two ABBA songs and may I point out that they were a very success-ful group an liked by mil-lions around the world, neither do I like watch-ing any of the real-ity shows including these danc-ing on ice and Xfactor type shows.I too laugh at some of the older TV shows like “Are you being served” or “Allo Allo” but I personally think that the style of comment at the end of your article misrepresents gays and reinforces the uninformed’s beliefs.

Could I possibly ask you to use a little more tact next time please? I mean how would you feel if you were continually referred to in a derogatory way?Mr. D

I am...you haven’t met my friends have you...? ED.

Hello,A little late I got your January issue, where I read the article about your 2011 Award, given to Telefonica. How can you be so wrong ? (However, they managed to send me a bill for a connection at an address where no lines are installed )No, The real awarded company should be Voda-fone. I’ll tell you why. It’s a long story, but I’ll try to be as short as possible. After being a satisfied customer of Vodafone for many years back in Belgium, I decided to get connected with them here in Spain. They had a reasonable autonomo of-fer, where I could get two phone numbers on the same con-tract for a fixed price of 78 Euros a month.First stop at The Phone house, they didn’t do au-tonomo contracts.Second stop Vodafone shop in Torrevieja, where the very young girl behind the counter didn’t have a clue of the matter that they offer special autonomo contracts.Third stop at Carrefour Torrevieja, where the friendly girl behind the counter was able to help me out, finally. But, then again, after I put her the Vodafone magazine under the eyes, where they offered a Blackberry or HTC smartphone with the type of con-tract I wanted, she kept saying that was a mistake, I could only get a simple phone, and eventually she could (as I needed two numbers) offer me one touch screen model, and the other one was a cheap model.I tried to insist on the offer in the magazine, but finally, I accepted, because I had a business, and I urgently needed to get connected. So, the girl made the contract, had me sign it, and then, told me I had to come back “mañana a las tardes” (oh I start to hate that word) because the phones had to be activated first. So I went back the next day, but, no phones available, mañana again …..Finally, after four mañanas, I got connected, ran to the print shop, having business cards printed, and was proud having, finally, a telephone num-ber.This was, mid September 2009.And now, the real trouble begins.End of September I got my first invoice of 112 Euros, which seemed fair to me, (78 euros fixed price + a couple of calls to my home country), so I never watched the bill detail on the numbers I called.End of October 95 Euros, end of December 118 Euros, all invoices correctly payed by the bank. Beginning of January 2010, I had to travel back to Belgium for business, once I crossed the French border, and the phone should go in “roaming”,

I got the message on my screen “sim card not activated”.I thought I must have done something wrong with the settings, because my wife’s cellphone (which was on the same contract) worked fine. I tried to figure it out, but the message stayed on my screen. So, back in Spain after a week, I tried to fig-ure out what was wrong. The answer I got was “You didn’t pay your bill”. So I contacted my bank manager, who assured me every bill had been paid correctly. So, I printed my bank history at home, and (after having made a tour over four Vodafone shops, where they all ignored me, and kept saying that I had to pay my bill), I landed in the “Vodafone

tienda autonomo” in Almoradi,Where I was received by

a

f r iendly man at a desk,

what a difference with the overloaded coun-ters in the other shops). The man consulted his computer, made couple of phone calls, and then told me that he would have me reconnected in 5 minutes…. After I payed a fine of 258 Euros. I protested, but, no solution, pay the bill or stay disconnected. So I payed the bill at the office by credit card, and before I was out of the shop, my cellphone was working again. This was January 15th of 2010.End of January, I received an invoice for 55 Eu-ros. This seemed strange to me, (because my monthly fix was 78 Euros, remember ?). But I thought they might have charged me too much on the fine, and they probably creditedThe amount on this new invoice. Again, invoice correctly payed by the bank. Surprise, surprise, first week of February, I tried to phone some-body, but it didn’t work. I watched on my screen, where the message was back again “Sim card not activated”.So, I went back to the shop in Almoradi, where I got the message “You didn’t pay your bill” and, suptise, they could get me reactivated in 5 min-utes, but first paying a fine of 325 Euros. I asked the man where those 325 Euros came from, and he told me “because of several open invoices”I showed him my bank balances, where all the

amounts were mentioned, including the last cred-it card payment in the shop, and surprise, the guy understood what I meant, and started mak-ing phone calls to Vodafone headquarters, trying to explain them there was something wrong. He got it sorted out, and after 2 hours, I left the shop, being reconnected without paying a fine. But it gets worse…..End of February, there’s no Vodafone invoice in the post box, and after asking at my bank, no invoice was presented for payment. I started to worry, and yes, first week of march, the mes-sage appeared again (“sim card not activated”). I didn’t even try anymore, and decided to change operator, no more on a contract, but on a simple prepaid card (I’m with the awarded Telefonica now, and guess what, no problems so far…)So end of march, I got a phone call from a girl named Concha, working for Vodafone call cen-ter, who friendly asked me why I didn’t pay my invoices. She told me I had 9 open invoices, for a total amount of 525 Euros, and threatened me, If I didn’t pay them within a week, they would put me on the black list, and I would never be able again to connect with any provider in Spain.Making a quick calculation, (I got connected Sep-tember 2009, and we were now March 2010, that makes 7 months, how could I have 9 open in-voices ??)I tried to explin that to her, but she wouldn’t (or couldn’t) understand. She said, she’d call me back. For the record, all the time I’ve been disconnect-ed, people could reach me, but I couldn’t make any phone calls, and my wife’s cell phone (which was on the same contract, remember) always stayed working fine.Beginning of September 2010 Concha finally calls me back. She says they’ve had enough of it. I had to pay my invoices, or they would send the while case into court. So, I gently asked her if they could possibly send me any bills, because the last invoice I received was end of January. She puts me on music for 15 minutes, and than, comes back with the mes-sage, they sent me an invoice every month. I re-ply that is definitely not true, and ask her to what address they’ve send the bills. She puts me on music again for 10 minutes and then says. “Calle Amatisto nr 10 in Los Montesinos”.Now, first off all I never even lived on that ad-dress, and what’s more, that street doesn’t even exist in Los Montesinos. How could they have sent invoices. Now, that was a question she couldn’t answer. So I told her I had moved recently to Algorfa, and asked her to send the invoices to my new adress. I told her, if she was able to send me those invoices, I would pay (after checking them of course) I would pay them all within a week. So she asked me for my address details, her final question was “What Province is that ?, where I replied “Alicante””.She told me I could have saved a lot of trouble checking my invoices on their online portal at Vo-dafone.es. CONTINUED

letters So I tried to explain her that I couldn’t even reg-ister at that online portal, because my screen kept saying “this NIE does not correspond” but she said, that was not possible. However, we ended the 50 minutes phone call, with my promise that I would pay the invoices within a week from receiving them. (Today I’m still waiting for them )So, after two weeks, Concha rings me back, and says I didn’t keep my promise, and insults me be-ing a liar, because the street I mentioned, giving her my address details, didn’t exist in …..Madrid.I told her I never mentioned Madrid as being the town I live and even try to remember her she asked last time for the province I was living in, where I said it was Alicante. She couldn’t remember that. And then all of a sudden, she even calls my name ! “Señor Vasquez (or something), don’t fool around with me, you have to pay your bills, that’s how it works here !!Now, you could have guessed, my name is not at all Señor Vasquez, so I told her goodbye and told the story to my wife. She said ( I didn’t even think of that before) at Vodafone they probably mixed me up with somebody else. So, I dug up the invoices I received in the begin-ning, and started to check out the details of the phone calls I made. And, surprise, not a single phone number on those details was familiar with me.So, for myself I figured it out now. The first months of my contract, I’ve been paying somebody else’s bill (however the invoices mention me and my wife’s telephone number), and that mister or misses unknown received my bills, but never paid them.I drove back to the shop in Almoradi, to try to ex-plain them, but the nice man who helped me out the last time doesn’t work there anymore, and is replaced by some 18 year old girl, who doesn’t even know how to take a Sim card out of a cell phone, so I gave up.1st of January, I got completely disconnected, (and surprise, this time my wife’s number which has been normally functioning all the time, is discon-nected too. Ever since beginning of October, I’ve never heard them again. And I guess I will never hear them again. My next door neighbor told me yesterday that he is disconnected from Vodafone. He doesn’t get any invoices anymore since two months.I told him not to bother, leaving him with question marks when I told him they couldn’t find the street we’re living in Madrid. I told him to change opera-tor, because his story sounded very familiar to me.So, I warned you, it’s a long story, but for my opin-ion, Vodafone is the only company that should get your 2011 award .Greetings from Algorfa (which is definitely NOT in Madrid)

Staying for just

one night at the

semi-desert reserve

of Samburu, we began

to appreciate the effect of water on

the wildlife, as we watched by the muddy

‘Brown River’ that trickles through the park. A

Leopard would have been invisible on a high

branch nearby, had he not forgotten his tail,

which hung down for all to see. Three sleepy

Lionesses dozed as they watched the frantic

activity below in the watercourse, Spur-

winged Plovers strutting about as a party of

Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse flew in to drink,

only to be disturbed by a party of Waterbuck,

casting anxious glances at the Lionesses.

Dwarf Mongooses (mongeese?) scampered

around. A stunning White-headed Buffalo-

Weaver perched obligingly, and further away,

a Brown Snake Eagle watched for a nice tasty

Puff Adder. Horrid brutes in the form of a

family of Buffalo chewed their chud, just like

Ermintrude the cow, but not so pretty.

When it was time to leave the park a stop

at the gate served for me to skulk around,

finding several small birds, but then clapping

eyes on a little beauty – it was love at first

sight, my first Pygmy Falcon, as lovely a

creature as you could imagine.

Now a long drive back south, admir-

ing the equatorial snows on the top of

Mount Kenya, to the tonsured parkland

of Aberdare Country Club – it superfical

resemblance to similar establishments

in, perhaps, Surrey, rather spoilt as an

enormous Warthog trailed its young family

over the lawn. Good small birds abounded,

and the lodge’s eaves were being visited by

Mosque and Red-rumped Swallows, Little

and White-rumped Swifts and the occasional

House Martin.

We were told to leave our main luggage at

the lodge, and were whisked, with overnight

bags, 17 kilometres to ‘The Ark’ – a wooden

building overlooking a big pool, with view-

ing platforms. The Ark stands at over 2,500

metres, so that you don’t run upstairs, and I

found a hot water bottle in my bed – on the

equator! A party of rare Red-fronted Parrots

flew over, and while I watched migrant Yellow

Wagtails and Wood Sandpipers around the

shore, a lonely Black-headed Heron, then

a weird-looking Hamerkop flew in. More

spectacular were the pair of Crowned Cranes

feeding nearby, but ever after more obscure

species, I was thrilled to find an endemic

Aberdare Cisticola – most guests wouldn’t,

I guess, give the streaky little brown bird a

second glance. What we all saw then was

a movement down to the water of Spotted

Hyenas, treated to disdainful looks by the

many Elephants. A cute Bush-baby visited the

feeding station as dusk approached. Closest

thing to Paradise, the Ark!

But we were to move on early next morning,

and our journey took us across the equa-

tor, where a couple of guys scrape a living

demonstrating how the water goes one way

round the plughole just to the north, and the

opposite twenty metres south. Ah well! A

Green-headed Sunbird was more my thing,

and I watched a Cape Rook fly by too. When

we stopped to admire a waterfall, Rock Mar-

tins flew around a shack emblazoned with the

title ‘El Corte Ingles!’

We came eventually to the thousand metre

drop into the famed Rift Valley, that great

geological fault which bisects East Africa, and

passed through the busy town of Nakuru,

heading for the great soda-lake of that name.

LEAVING THE OFFICE EARLYThree girls all worked in the same office with the same female boss. Each day, they noticed the boss left work early. One day the girls decided that when the boss left, they would leave right behind her. Af-ter all, she never called or came back to work, so how would she know they went home early?? The brunette was thrilled to be home early. She did a little gardening, spent playtime with her son, and went to bed early. The redhead was elated to be able to get in a quick workout at the spa before meeting a dinner date. The blonde was happy to get home early and surprise her husband, but when she got to her bedroom, she heard a muffled noise from inside. Slowly and quietly, she cracked open the door and was mortified to see her husband in bed with her lady boss!! Gently, she closed the door and crept out of her house. The next day, at their coffee break, the brunette and redhead planned to leave early again, and they asked the blonde if she was going to go with them. “No way”, the blonde exclaimed. “I almost got caught yesterday.”

topJungle Drums League Table

I think it is fair to say we have now reached the ‘business end’ of the season and the remaining fixture list is looking worryingly short for those playing catch up to the runaway trio at the top of the table.

At the time of writing we still have a weekend of points to play for, so it will be interesting to see if anyone can make up any ground of the magnificent league leader, Jean Byrne an the OT Dreamteam. Jean along with Alan McGinn/Armoure FC and Raymond Lowe/La Marina Gooner see to be consistently racking up the points. Time for all you managers to dig deep and make those shrewd moves in the transfer market. Can anyone break into the ‘Big 4’ at the top of MASA International/Jungle Drums Fantasy Football League?

Before I run out of football clichés let’s take a look at the Manager of the Month Award. As always a delicious meal for two at the Hotel MASA in Torrevieja is awarded to the team that accrued the most points in February. At the time of writing team Manc Red is just behind league stalwart Alan McGinn’s Armoured FC. Don’t forget to check online to see who finished February with the most points. The Kindle, for those you that don’t know what I am going on about, is a sleek graph-ite looking tablet device that is dedicated to allowing you to carry around your library of books, enabling you to read pretty much whatever you like on the move. It’s cer-tainly the easiest way to carry around 100’s of books if you like to read whilst you travel.

It connects to the Internet ei-ther by WIFI or 3G, the WIFI version requires that you have an Internet connection with WIFI at the location that you want to download your books. The 3G op-tion is a little more ex-pensive but will allow you to download your books from pretty much anywhere.

Once you have downloaded the book that you want to read, you don’t need to be connected to the Internet in order to read the book.

The Kindle uses an anti-glare 6” screen to display text from whichever book you have chosen to read, the words are dis-played in the screen using ‘electronic ink’ that uses a contrast that makes it very easy on the eye to read - certainly nothing like reading from a computer screen. Due to the technology used the screen refresh rate is very slow, meaning the battery life is phenomenal - easily lasting days of book reading.

One thing that Kindle users complain about is that the device comes with no compan-ion software. There is however third party

software that fills this gap, the best looks to be ‘Calibre’ - marketed as the ‘one stop solution to all your ebook needs’, it provides the Kindle with a feature rich and more im-portantly FREE ebook management appli-cation.

Not only does Calibre allow you to search through and create a library

of your books (for ex-ample it’s easy to see all of the books you have from a specific author), it enables you

to automatically fetch news from websites or RSS feeds, format the news into an ebook and upload it to your Kindle, so for example Calibre would enable you to download a daily copy of the Guardian onto your

Kindle.

If you would like to know more then there are loads of

tutorial videos on the Calibre website at http://calibre-ebook.comNext month we look at what else you can do with your Kindle, including playing games!

I hope you have found it useful, remem-ber that you can see all of our articles on our website at www.bluemoonsolutions.es/articles

Welcome to this month’s computer article written by Richard from BlueMoon Solutions

This month we look at Amazon’s book reader, the Kindle. Many of you received one from Santa - I know because I have been asked by loads of people how you do various things with it like con-necting it to WIFI, changing the default country etc. So I thought I would dedicate the next couple of months to looking at this popular

device.

The thing is, us lot here on the Costa Blanca are rich with shoe

makers (and I don’t mean German jockeys, or indeed Danish

goalkeepers). Elche has for many years been the centre of the

shoe industry here in spain and being just a clogs throw from all

of us we thought it’d be an idea to give you a little background.

In our sister newspaper The Courier (25th February) we ran a

story on how the Spanish show industry is fighting cheap imports.

Check www.thecourier.es if you can´t find a copy.

Right, back to it…you see most of the shoe factories that you see

now, dotted in and around Elche, are relatively new but don’t

let that give you the impression that they are new companies as

most have been trading over fifty years in the region and some

longer than that. We went to a typical, traditional shoe manufac-

turer in Elche, Salvador Artesano to investigate more.

Julian Mendez Lopez, Marketing Manager at Salvador’s 6000m2

site in Elche, kindly offered to be our guide as we talked and

walked through their factory and the huge show store next to it.

As an example of a typical, and successful, shoe manufacturer

still working today in Elche, Salvador Artesano began its life in the

workshop of its founder and it was Salvador himself who used to

sit and make the shoes (with a little help from the family) until

it grew to a size where more help was needed. However, rather

than bring workers in to a central factory much of the work was

sent out in cars and vans to ‘outworkers’ who would work from

home doing a specific type of job, such as stitching or glueing.

This cottage industry still continues today in and around Elche. My

neighbours are one such example and each Monday they’ll receive

a truck full of soles to be attached to the upper section. Then

they’ll sit all day (in their house coat and slippers) and, with

Are You Well Heeled?

a few friends, do the job assigned while chatting…of

course the obligatory cigarette needs to dangle from the

lips to achieve the full effect. Although we do call the

husband Marvin as he’s a sole-man…he doesn’t seem to

mind.

Since 1966 when Salvador Artesano began knocking out

shoes from his workshop, the company has grown to

over eighty employees and three factories in the area.

Inside the factory at Elche (well worth a visit even if

you don’t buy) the impressive shoe store carries a wide

variety of makes and styles along with accessories,

suitcases and more. We were taken down into the fac-

tory (which you can watch from above as the cobblers

go about..er…cobbling?) they still use many traditional

methods and it´s something different to see shoes being

put together from a a few strips of some dead animal.

Most of the workers have been with the family firm for a

long time and are highly skilled in their trade.

But nowadays any shoe shop worth its salt needs to

carry a fair range (for the ladies mainly) and marques

from around the world are now sold to cater for evolv-

ing tastes and needs. Even my son found some size

49 trainers at the store, and we didn’t need to sell the

furniture to pay for them.

From a small beginning – one man in his workshop to

three factories and exports around the world – shoe

making in this region really has become a load of cob-

blers…

There has only been one change with the process of importing vehicles this month. Many will be chuffed to bits to hear that it IS now possible to register a right hand drive pickup truck!! There is now a loophole so for those of you who have not given up on this, now is the time to re register before they change their minds.

MOTORINGin Spain

Buying a 2nd hand car in spain is not complicated

as long as you have been given the correct advice

beforehand. First you really should do a VIC (vehicle

information check) to make sure the vehicle is free of

finance and debt. This enquiry is made at your local

trafico office. Then next step would be to make sure you

have relevent paperwork- original passport, residencia

or nie and padron or escritura for buyer, car documents,

suma receipt for current year(although this is not obliga-

tory) and a bill of sale signed by both parties. A spanish

compraventa de vehiculos can be dowloaded from the

computer.

With all this in hand a trip is then made to the local

concelleria de hacienda where you complete the neces-

sary modelo 620 and then a visit to the bank to pay the

4 percent transfer tax. Then its back to the tax office for

approval of the papers.

Once you have these you then present all at trafico

after paying their fee and you will usually be given a

stamped document to return to trafico in one month to

collect the final document unless you are lucky enough

to receive it on the day.

Goodluck and remember trafico is open only in the

mornings now or if you cannot face the queues please

give me a call and I can carry out this process on your

behalf.

ART ON SHOW IN GUARDAMAR

Guardamar’s Public Library opens its doors during the month of March to the‘OpenArt Group’ (formerly known as los Balcones) – an international group of artists who have chosen to display their work, once more, in Guardamar.

The group, who have been together for some time now, and are based at the Mar Azul centre in Torrevieja, chose the Guardamar venue after much soul searching and were delighted with the offer from Guar-damar’s Town Council’s, Council-lor for Culture, Sabrina Amorós to organise their opening evening in Guardamar’s Public Library.

The exhibition continues throughout the month of March and can be visited Monday to Friday 9 a.m.- 1.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m – 8 p.m. More details can be obtained from Iris Luke on 965716319 or from the Public Library on 96 672 7170

GUARDAMAR’S TOURIST TRAIN - CHUFFED TO BE BACK...

Guardamar’s now famous ‘Path of History ‘ Tour continues to attract visitors from all over the district – and statistics last year show a marked increase in other nationalities on board – as well as a significant increase in groups and associations. The Tour – organised by Guardamar Town Council in conjunction with its Tourist Information Office – is a fascinating journey through ancient civilizations, covering its history frompast to present, including the earthquake of 1829 and the reforestation work on the sand dunes.

As the Tourist Office explained ‘The aim of the tour is to provide a compact history of our town – in an interesting and practical way. We show a short video beforehand – and then passengers board the local tourist train which stops at the various historical points, where our English speaking guide provides a fascinating insight into Guardamar’shistory and cultural heritage.

Tours begin again on Friday, 4th March with depar-tures at 12 noon. (Passengers are asked to be at the Tourist Information Office 11.30 a.m. for the ‘in house’ video beforehand) Groups and Associations are being encouraged to book in advance through the Tourist Information Office’s Reservations system. ‘We have seen a marked increase in the number of group reservations – it is, after all, an interesting and unique way to experience local history. Groups are offered a discounted price – which includes a free guide book and the Tourist Office can often help with sugges-tions for ‘eating out’ before or after the guided visit. So, with our superb beaches, pleasant surroundings and our local shopping opportunities - you can really ‘make a day of it’ in Guardamar.’

For information and reservations please contact the Tourist Office (in the town’s main square) on 96 572 44 88 or e mail them on [email protected]

WHY PAY MORE for ADVERTISING? the best ad prices- TEL. 606 540 408

Harvey, your imaginary 6ft tall bunny rabbit friend who follows you every-where, will get himself into a pickle this month in ways too complicated to relate in this column. Suffice to say that even imaginary bunny rabbits require food and water and a safe place to toilet themselves. Most of the month’s problems will be best blamed on Harvey. Beware close friends in whom you have confided of Harvey’s existence, they may seek to use this knowledge in an unfavorable light when matters of money or love are involved around the 21st.

That long intended, but not quite brought to fruition, invention, which will make you a million dollars and allow you to leave that job you hate, is being looked on favorably by Mars and, more importantly, the Earth’s Moon this month. Whilst you realize that other areas will suffer during your work on this inventing project, you should care not one jot about the repercussions.

What is the difference between fearless self-confidence and sheer unfet-tered arrogance? You will find out the answer to this riddle this month and may even have the bruises to show for it if Neptune has its way.Scavenging on the coast for shellfish, in all of their forms, is well starred, and will benefit from a mini tidal-wave coming in from the East Coast, brought about by a combination of Mercury’s nefarious activities with one of its moons after the 7th.

Accepting criticism has always made you fly into a blind fury, especially from those you trust. This month your fury will be tested to almost martial arts levels of skill.Throwing things has always been a keen interest, and this month your talents will be noticed by a special agent looking for a person with your ability to shout-throw and then hit a target all in one fluid movement.

This month, as a result of Neptune reacting with Pluto’s far side, you will become much too sure of yourself on home improvement or car maintenance matters. You are in severe danger of starting out on a repair project which is doomed in a slash and burn horror movie kind of way.Enjoy any new found enthusiasm for organization and shrug off any skepticism from loved ones or neighbors, especially those to whom you owe money.

This month a loved one, an older brother, or a school sports coach type figure, will encourage you to achieve your long held but never realized goal or goals which may or may not relate to horses. This is finally that month you have been waiting for. This is the month you will win big time.

Mercury’s enchantment of five of the Saturnian moons indicates house cleaning will succeed in a similar way as seen in the movie Mary Pop-pins but without the need for finger clicks, singing and hats. Dusting, polishing, vacuuming and even small house repairs including nailing pictures to walls, tightening screws in furniture and wallpapering, are amazingly well starred, virtually eliminating any prospect of failure.

Your enthusiasm for life and love and other cost effective pursuits is set to lead to another level of excitement this month, and for the rest of the year. A cheeky Sun, and an over-excitable Mercury, are conspiring to bring forth your creative verbosity in both quantity and volume. Rejoice!Conversations about subjects you know little or nothing at all about are well starred on the 14th.

The set of rules on which you have based your life are set to implode all-of-a-sudden this month leaving you looking for a new religion or even gym membership. There is nothing that can be done to wipe the red wine stain from a car-pet after a completely unavoidable accident on the 6th. That frequently misheard old wives tale that says ‘more red wine rubbed into spilt red wine will take the stain away’ is as wrong now as it ever was.

If you have tried, but failed, in your subtle attempts of communicating your talents to loved ones, now may be time to resort to screaming and shouting hysterically. Such Drama Queendom will open doors if handled carefully during Neptune’s Hibernatory Chuckle after the third Wednes-day of the month.

A major personality change, normally only associated with violent emotional upheaval or in soap operas, is set to provide wondrous, albeit complicated, opportunities for you over the coming weeks. Your usual ‘good listener’ character attribute is set to be reversed, indeed, you will find it difficult to stop talking at times this month, even talking over other people when they have something to say - something you used to really hate.

The Sun and Saturn are adjunct in the nanophase of their upper echelon - Behold your innovativeness and do not fear change!Round-and-round or up-and-down rides at fairs are particularly well starred his month. You will be unable to cause offense in any of its forms this month so talk slackly and, especially when drinking, enjoy the ability to say without fear the first thing that comes into your mind.
