From the artistic Director

Judy Gold is a funny woman. first introduced to her as a stand-up comic and frequent guest on colin Quinn’s Tough Crowd, i was immediately struck not only by her lightning-quick timing and wry wit but also by her ability to take down a group of crass, sexist, homophobic comics in a single blow. when she approached us about doing a show that weaves her present daydream of sitcom fame and the childhood that begat that dream, we simply could not resist.

having produced a number of one-person shows, we take a certain pleasure in the ones in which a performer plays her/himself, even an exaggerated version. more than a biographical account, these stories allow the audience to peel back a layer leading to the discovery of secrets we readily recognize in ourselves. while Judy Gold uses her life-long, passionate history with television as the frame that contains her life story, we identify with the story itself. and in this account, Judy asks much larger questions about where she fits into the family strata portrayed in most sitcoms. as we sit on the precipice of allowing the idea of family to have a much broader definition, the time seems perfect for Judy to talk to la about her family values.

as The Judy Show brings an end to our 2012/2013 season, i take this opportunity to thank you for joining us in the intimate audrey. we have already begun the work of bringing you nine plays for 2013/2014. with a line up that runs the gamut, from classic thriller to comedy with a side of politics, the ride should be fun.

see you next season.

welcome to the geffen playhouse

Page 4: The Judy Show Program

hello, anD welcome to the Final show oF the 2012/2013 season: the west coast Premiere of The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom. we are excited to present this comedy written by Judy Gold & Kate moira ryan and starring the multi-talented Judy Gold.

The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom is a fitting conclusion to a diverse and wonderful season here at the Geffen Playhouse. this year in the Gil cates theater, we’ve featured the enthralling By The Way, Meet Vera Stark; enjoyed the holidays with Coney Island Christ-mas; beheld the wit of The Gift and enjoyed the company of American Buffalo closing with the hilarious Yes, Prime Minister. in our audrey skirball Kenis theater, we launched three new plays including The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom. we experienced life in a world of technology with Build and enjoyed the twenties with Miss Julie. additionally, what started out as a special six week run for Nothing to Hide, magically played for 18 weeks.

off stage, our education and outreach programs have continued to grow. we are deep-ening the impact we have with programs including the mendez writing Project, our Veterans nights, lights up, story Pirates and student matinees. i am so proud of the work we are doing both on and off the stage.

speaking of being proud, i would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make 2013 another record-breaking year for our annual Backstage at the Gef-fen fundraiser, honoring Billy crystal and Bruce ramer, our founding chairman. this may 13th event raised over 1.2 million dollars in support of our artistic initiatives and our education and outreach programs. a feat of this magnitude would not be possible without the support of our creative community. this year our stage lit up with per-formances by debbie allen, clint eastwood, carl reiner, morgan freeman, annette Bening, rita wilson, carol Kane, topher Grace, Bruce Vilanch, mona Golabek, Jackson Browne and Josh Gad. of course, nothing we do here at the theater would be possible without the incredible generosity of our patrons, and for that, i thank each and every Backstage at the Geffen participant.

thank you for being a part of another fine year at the Geffen Playhouse. i hope you have enjoyed yourself, and i hope to see you back at the Geffen Playhouse next season.

now i invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom.

with warm regards,

three generations of women share their raucous and refreshing approaches to navigating work, love and family. rock star academic catherine envies her friend Gwen who finds her domestic responsibilities

less than satisfying. meanwhile the witty and wry student avery wonders whether she has more in common with catherine’s aging mother than any of today’s modern feminists. this new comedy takes

Amy Levinson: As someone who has done stand-up for most of your career, why did you decide to change it up and write a one-woman show? And do you feel like there is a significant difference between the two formats?

Judy Gold: they are comPletely different. when you do stand-up your entire life, you have to get a laugh every 20 or 40 seconds and you are dealing with blenders going off, and hecklers, and people paying their bill — essentially you have to fight to get and keep their attention. when you do theater, they come ready to see a show. there’s something so magical about a theater — the stage, the curtain, and these people waiting to be entertained. i think that stand-up is really who i am and how i make my living and how i cope with everything in my life but being able to tell a story and to have those moments that are not funny — that are instead completely, brutally honest and emotional-those are the things that make doing a one-person show so vastly different and so rewarding. also, when i’m doing stand-up i can change course and go off on a tangent — talk about whatever is on my mind. and with theater, i am stuck to my script but want it to be as if i’m telling this story for the very first time every night. the first show i did, 25 Questions for a Jewish Mother, was based on interviews i did with Jewish mothers and it had a serious tone because there were stories of holocaust survivors included, but i sort of interwove my life because i had recently become a mother. and from a practical

standpoint, i had a new baby, i didn’t want to be working the clubs, i wanted to stay in one place. But i was trying to figure out how i fit into this world — i’m a Jewish lesbian comic — and i was able to frame my story through the lens of the stories of these other mothers and find my place in all of it. this current show is so much more transparent and raw and it came about because i really wanted to tell the story of my desire to be on a sitcom. sitcoms were my life growing up. when i think about my childhood — my formative years, it’s my mother, my father, my brother, my sister and my cousins. But it’s also the Brady Bunch, the Partridge family, mary tyler moore, Gabe Kotter, the Bunkers. i’m growing up in these suburbs of new Jersey and these people were my link to another world, other families. the thing is, i don’t think anyone ever thinks their own family is so great and when these shows were on — keeping in mind that these shows were on once, there was no dVr, we couldn’t watch it again later, so the family would sit and watch the show together and it would open a dialogue. norman lear, as the best example, made shows that were so socially relevant. maude had an abortion and edith Bunker was raped. the racism and anti-semitism that we dealt with in the character of archie Bunker. mary tyler moore was a single, working woman. one Day at a Time gave us a single mother bringing up two kids in a sort of “it takes a village” environment. these shows provided a way to see into the lives of others in a socially relevant way. i always

thought, as i became a stand-up, that my life was meant to be a sitcom — it had written itself. it’s been such a struggle because we’re gay, but we’re a family and we’re just like every other family. we’re two women, but it’s still two parents, and the crazy mother and the neighbors. i have pitched my life as a sitcom for most of my career and i’ve always been told time and again that america is not ready for a gay family. and people argue now, well there’s Modern Family but what i’m talking about is the main family on a show being gay.

AL: Do you feel like in the time that you’ve been doing this show that this issue of the gay family has come into sharper focus — do you feel the difference?

JG: oh my god. you know what’s amazing — for about four or five years i have been talking about edith windsor and thea spyer in my act. i am an activist for gay marriage. i honestly don’t understand how Jerry sandusky and the menendez Brothers can get married and not me. so when i saw their story in the New York Times about them having been together for 40 years and having to fly to canada with three aides because one of the two is a paraplegic — and go to an airport hotel in canada to marry. they are successful, quality human beings who have been together for 40 years and they have to fly to canada while meanwhile Britney spears can get married for four hours in las Vegas. i was so infuriated by all of this that i started talking about it at the end of my act, especially after Prop 8 passed. and it’s just amazing to me that edie [windsor] was the plaintiff in the defense of marriage case before the supreme court. the timing of this — the fact that the show will be running as the supreme court is making their decision, is incredible to me.

AL: In other words the idea of your sitcom dovetails with these ideas exactly — the redefining of the traditional family.

JG: we are a traditional family. we have all the same problems as a traditional family. it’s not like we wake up every morning and say, “good morning, we’re gay! hey kids, come have breakfast with your gay parents and your gay parents will drive you to

school!” shows can still have the impact that archie Bunker, or The Jeffersons had on our culture, how they were able to push through assumptions and stereotypes, and present something real. i really believe that television has the ability to change the world by opening our eyes. it’s a huge audience you are speaking to and i think it’s time they see a gay family portrayed in a real way. Kids are constantly having hate drilled into their heads with slogans like “one man, one woman” or “pray the gay away.” something needs to serve as the counterpoint and i think humor has the ability to make any message palatable. you know, when i came out it wasn’t a ‘cool’ thing to do. i did stand-up for many years without ever talking about the fact that i’m gay, and i think it has affected my career in that it caused it to take a different trajectory. But once i had kids i felt like it was imperative to tell my whole story. and that’s what all comics do — we get our material from our lives and to leave that out would have been telling my kids that we have something to hide.

AL: Coming up in stand-up, who were the comedians from whom you drew inspiration?

JG: i have to say, Joan rivers is such an inspiration. first of all, i think she’s hilarious. she works so hard and her jokes are amazing. she takes nothing for granted and she takes nothing seriously. so i love her. when i think about who i used to watch, Joy Behar and susie essman were like the queens of new york. they were always such great mentors to me. and then there were comics like richard Pryor and George carlin, the ones who took the risks, who were fearless. lewis Black and chris rock — chris rock and i were what were called back ups at clubs. if a comedian who was booked didn’t show up or was late, we would fill in for them. he was amazing.

AL: If you could have played any of those iconic women on a sitcom, who would you have chosen.

JG: maude. i’d have to go with maude. as a girl, i wanted to be rhoda, just like every other Jewish girl. But as an adult, i’d have to go with maude.
