Why?

Our vision was developed by our community in 2009. This vision requires us to place life long learners at the centre of everything that we do.

The world that we are preparing our students, and our children, for is a very different one from the one that we grew up in. The impact of technology, in particular, is driving this

change. What type of jobs will be available for our children? What skills will be required to be successful in a world with increasing global interconnectedness, where expert

knowledge is able to be gained from looking up on the internet, and where an understanding of our impact on the environment will be critical?

It is our role, as educators and parents, to consider if the model of learning that we currently have will provide our students with the skills required to be “empowered, self-

managing, life long learners, who live the Gospel values in a changing world”.

At St Peter’s College, we believe that we need to change….this is our journey towards our vision.

The Process So Far...

In 2014, we began a three phase curriculum review. Some key elements of this review have included:

Looking at what we do o What courses and pathways do we provide our students?

Looking at what others do o In 2015, a number of staff visited schools around New Zealand.

Expert input o Discussions with members of the Education Review Office (ERO) team in April

2016. o Five leaders in our school attended the World Educational Leadership

Conference in Singapore in April, 2016.

In August 2015, the Senior Leadership Team drafted an educational philosophy. Through consultation with staff, further changes were made.

The following pages present this educational philosophy.

Where does the Educational Philosophy fit?

Here is a visual representation of how all the elements of our school fit together.

The Catholic Church is at the heart of our school, and from this we have our mission to communicate Christ and to help form Christ in the lives of others. Christ works through every element and is reflected in all aspects of the College.

From this foundation, our vision and values were developed in consultation with the school community, and these influence everything that we do.

The philosophy of the school is now being developed to live out our vision. Once this is established, we will consider the implications for what we teach (the curriculum of the school) and how we teach (the teaching and learning of the school).

Developing life-long learners is at the centre of all that we do.

The St Peter’s College

Educational Philosophy

Within our St Peter’s College Catholic faith community, developing life long learning is at the centre of all that we do. We measure success by whether we are equipping learners with the skills and dispositions to find success within the five years after they have left St Peter’s College. We are, therefore, future focused and seek to develop a personalised pathway for each individual.

Our holistic approach means that members of our community develop five contexts of self - learning.

To become empowered to achieve this success, we have identified a set of keys. These keys help unlock the potential of each learner, and provide a framework to teach important life competencies. At times, these keys are explicitly taught in ‘Connect to Succeed’. However, they are also expected to be present in pedagogical practice and curriculum documents throughout the school.

The keys are;

Creating - possibilities, alternatives, new ideas, expressing new concepts and new perceptions.

Thinking - critically, creatively, reflectively, problem solving.

Serving - freely and generously, giving of one’s self, time and resources to assist people, as well as good stewardship.

Collaborating - openly, reaching out to one another to solve problems and gain deeper learning and understanding.

Connecting - meaningfully, experiencing success through purposeful and productive engagement within and beyond school.

Risk Taking - purposefully, extending out of your comfort zone, being prepared to make and learn from mistakes.

Persevering - earnestly, doing something despite difficulty, learning from setbacks and our mistakes, and developing resilience.

Leading - effectively, with integrity, to influence others positively, taking initiative.

Inquiring - of ourselves and the world around us, seeking to learn by asking questions, generating and testing ideas, evaluating and reflecting.

Where to from here?

We are continuing to develop our thinking and understanding around: The philosophy itself and the Implications for teaching and learning at St Peter’s College.

We are beginning to implement some ideas from ‘My Learning’ and ‘My Future’ into our coaching groups, Connect to Succeed (C2S).

We will keep our community informed of our progress.
