no one likes to anticipate a trip to the emergency room, but if serious health concerns such as a heart

attack or stroke necessitate such a visit, there’s no better destination than Exempla Lutheran Medical Center’s Emergency Room—a cutting-edge facility that provides some of the finest emergency care in the entire nation.

Heart Attack Care Significantly Exceeds the National AverageExempla Lutheran is an accredited Chest Pain Center where leading-edge treatment is administered far more rapidly than the national average. The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) has established a research-based standard of care for heart attack patients. Exempla Lutheran has received this organization’s prestigious accreditation and has demonstrated compliance with its high standard of care. The SCPC accreditation process reviews the full range of care, including Emergency Dispatch Services, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Room and Catheterization Lab, observation

unit, cardiac rehab, the cardiac in-patient units and cardiac rehabilitation. Should you or a loved one experience a heart attack, you can be confident of the exceptional care you will receive in Exempla Lutheran’s ER. For example: n The Chest Pain Center monitors our

responsiveness to every patient who comes through the door and measures the time it takes to stop a heart attack in its tracks! The Chest Pain Center collects data demonstrating that Exempla Lutheran ER’s door to balloon time (re-establishing patient blood flow in the plugged heart vessel) averages 67 minutes for all heart attack patients treated. The national goal is 90 minutes. Exempla Lutheran’s fastest door to balloon time on record is 14 minutes!

n Exempla Lutheran has sixteen Exempla-based board certified Cardiologists. For patients requiring advanced cardiac interventions, Exempla Lutheran has four state-of-the-art cath labs.

A Gold Seal of Approval for Emergency Stroke Care Demonstrating our Neurosciences program excellence and full compliance with nationally developed stroke care standards, Exempla Lutheran has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for certification as a Primary Stroke Center. An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Exempla Lutheran received its initial certification in 2007. The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s recommendations for primary stroke centers. The Joint Commission’s reviewer remarks, included: n “I can’t say enough about the quality of

staff.” n “I am so impressed that the culture here

focuses on the whole person, and not a patient as a number.”

n “The program here is mature and in great shape.”

Should a stroke necessitate a visit to Exempla Lutheran’s Emergency Room for you or a loved one, you can rest assured an exemplary level of care will be experienced,

based on the following quality indicators: n After a stroke patient enters Exempla

Lutheran’s ER, the average time to administration of “clot busting” t-PA is only 60 minutes—placing our program in the top 7 percent of all programs nationally.

n The time from ER admittance to a neurologist’s care is less than 15 minutes. Exempla Lutheran’s use of state-of-the-art CO-DOC telemedicine provides rapid access to a neurologist’s expertise.

n Six Blue Sky Neurology physicians support Exempla Lutheran’s Neuro-Hospitalist program. For patients requiring advanced neurosurgical interventions, such as those experiencing hemorrhagic strokes, two Exempla-based Neurosurgeons and four Interventional Neuro-Radiologists (INR) provide care.

heart attack: Warning signsTake a moment to review early warning signs of a heart attack. If you experience any of these symptoms or observe them in others, call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY:nChest discomfort – Discomfort in the chest

that lasts more than a few minutes, or comes and goes. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, numbness, squeezing, fullness or pain.

nDiscomfort in other areas of the upper body – Includes pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, between shoulders or the stomach.

nStomach symptoms – An urge to throw up.

nShortness of breath – Can occur with or without chest discomfort.

nOther signs – Include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Especially in women, tiredness can occur, sometimes for days or weeks before a heart attack. Women may also have heartburn, heart flutters, or loss of appetite.

Warning signs oF heart attacks and strokesIn order to receive the best care available, it is essential to increase awareness of early signs and symptoms of heart attacks and strokes. Both conditions’ outcomes benefit from rapid treatment, so it is often up to the sufferer and/or his or her loved ones, colleagues or friends to quickly identify what is occurring.

stroke: Warning signsA handy acronym, called FAST, can assist you if you suspect a stroke may be underway in yourself or another individual. Take a few minutes to review these early warning signs. If you identify any of them in yourself or others, IMMEDIATELY call 9-1-1:

F – Smile and observe the FACE. Does one side of the face droop?

a – Raise both ARMS. Does one arm drift downward?

s– Speak a simple phrase. Is this difficult and/or is SPEECH slurred or odd?

t – TIME is of the essence. If you observe ANY of these signs, call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY.

no doubt you have heard of one of the most important, recent surgical innovations: the da Vinci Surgical System. This robust technology allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive gynecological and urogynecological

surgeries with unmatched precision, dexterity and control. Exempla Lutheran’s physician community is rapidly adopting da Vinci training and is proud to have 13 GYN robotic-trained physicians who provide surgical care through this sophisticated system. Robotic surgery, a minimally invasive option for a range of uterine conditions, provides 3D visualization and fine tissue manipulation capabilities, allowing the surgeon to see internal structures more clearly while performing with more accuracy and control. The following are among robotic surgery’s many patient benefits: n Shorter hospital stay nDecreased pain nLess risk of infection nLess blood loss nReduced scarring nFaster recovery nRapid return to normal daily activities Dr. Gayle Crawford, an Exempla Lutheran OB/GYN, extols the rapid healing and variety of conditions robotics can treat successfully: “Our patients are thrilled with their outcomes compared to traditional abdominal surgery. Our hysterectomy patients frequently go home the same day as surgery. Robotics is an effective option for all age groups. We treat women with heavy bleeding, endometriosis, fibroids, hysterectomies, and prolapse.” As with any surgery, robotic surgery is patient and procedure specific and may not be appropriate for every individual or surgery. An upcoming FREE interactive education program will help you explore if it is right for you:

in our fall Journal, we introduced our new Exempla Lutheran Senior Emergency Room. This comfortable,

welcoming addition to our existing ER has been up and running since Oct. 4, 2011 and averages around 20 patients per day. You will recall the eight-bed Senior ER targets those over 65 years of age and features an intake and assessment process geared toward older adults’ unique requirements. Through our Senior ER and other hospital initiatives geared toward elders, Exempla Lutheran has proven itself a senior care leader. Our Senior ER team is already getting great feedback on what our patients call a “spa-like” experience. Said Carol Cooper, who was Exempla Lutheran’s first Senior ER patient: “My room was calm and inviting. Even as the ER got busier, my room remained quiet. I was very well cared for—everyone was especially kind, and I felt pampered!”Contrary to the typical ER experience, our Senior ER patients frequently comment on how restful their experience was. Rather than the usual curtains for walls, our Senior ER patients enjoy actual walls—along with non-skid floors and soft, calming lighting. The curtain covering the entrance to each room features tranquil scenes, such as mountain and ocean landscapes.

Hearing and visual devices are readily available to facilitate staff communication with seniors—another important feature of Exempla Lutheran’s Senior ER. These tools help keep our patients comfortable and informed about their treatment plan while decreasing overall noise levels. Finally, an additional benefit of our Senior ER is the care management available 13 hours per day, seven days a week. Our

community of seniors have the opportunity to make guided decisions about their recovery plan rather than struggling to figure out a plan on their own while not feeling their best. The outcome? Peace of mind for seniors and their families regarding the level of care available at Exempla Lutheran’s Senior ER.

Heart failure, a syndrome which occurs when the heart loses its ability to pump enough blood throughout the body, is a common disease that affects nearly 5 million Americans and is the only major cardiovascular disease on the rise. The fact that more people are surviving heart attacks is one of the biggest contributing factors to this rise in incidence.

While there is currently no known cure for heart failure, recent scientific advances in treatment offer patients a more normal life expectancy.

Join us at our kick-off celebration with a full month of weekly classes!
