Membership in The John & Dolly Kadlec Society is exclusively offered to members of the Mizzou family who make commitments of support to Mizzou Athletics via the Tiger Scholarship Fund (TSF) in the form of planned gifts.

Known in most circles as “Mr. Mizzou,” John Kadlec has been a fixture in Tiger athletics for over 50 years. Kadlec, a native of St. Louis, Mo., was an all‑conference lineman for the MU football team in 1950, and was the first‑ever player to be pictured on the cover of a Mizzou football media guide.

Kadlec served as an assistant football coach at Mizzou under legendary coaches Don Faurot, Frank Broyles, Dan Devine and Al Onofrio, and has been working in the Tiger athletic department as a fundraiser since 1986. He also served two terms of duty at Kansas State, as an assistant football coach under Doug Weaver, and as the Wildcats’ chief fundraiser.

Kadlec currently serves Mizzou as special assistant to the athletic director, and as color commentator on the Tiger Radio Network for MU football broadcasts.

A 1996 inductee into the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, Kadlec was also a 2005 inductee into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and had Missouri’s football practice fields dedicated to his honor in the fall of 2005.

John and Dolly have been married for 58 years. They have four children and four grandchildren. The Kadlecs currently reside in Columbia, Mo.

What is truly special about The John & Dolly Kadlec Society is that it gives us a chance to say something that is very important – thank you. At the same time, others can be motivated to follow your lead and lend support to Mizzou Athletics via the Tiger Scholarship Fund as well.

Why We Need Your HelpTiger Scholarship Fund (TSF) has served the University of Missouri athletic program by providing its student‑athletes with scholarship and academic support since it was founded in 1983.

Friends of MU who contribute to the Tiger Scholarship Fund believe a very strong program of intercollegiate athletics combined with developing individual character and University spirit will bring national visibility to Mizzou.

In addition to providing critical scholarship support to deserving athletes who participate in Mizzou’s 20 varsity sports, the Tiger Scholarship Fund also supports capital improvements and many other vital priorities that are essential to the success of our student‑athletes in the classroom, in the community and in competition.

Mizzou Athletics is self‑supporting and must operate from the revenue it receives. As the cost of education and the resources necessary to maintain and improve our department continue to escalate, so does our need for private giving. Private support is essential to obtain the success that alumni and fans deserve, desire and expect.

The following are a variety of ways in which to participate in The John & Dolly Kadlec Society and impact the future of Mizzou Athletics:

Estate giftsGift provisions through an estate are accomplished through a Will or Revocable Living Trust and are generally referred to as bequests. A charitable bequest provides future support to TSF while allowing you to maintain your present financial status. A properly worded estate document will help ensure that your gift is used as you intend.

Gifts to TSF can also be made through your estate by beneficiary designations of assets that allow you to pay on death (POD) or transfer on death (TOD). Such assets may include savings accounts, money market accounts, certificates of deposit, and mutual funds, to name a few. Beneficiary designations can be made of retirement accounts and life insurance as well.

Charitable trusts and other life income arrangementsYou can actually receive income from a gift that also benefits the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Charitable remainder trusts and pooled income funds are life income arrangements that enable you to provide significant future support to TSF but still receive income for life. In most cases, a charitable income tax deduction, reduced capital gains taxes and reduced exposure to estate tax liability are possible.

Charitable gift annuitiesAnother example of a life income arrangement is the Charitable Gift Annuity. A gift annuity provides an attractive fixed rate payment based on the age of the annuitant or in the case of a two‑life annuity the age of both annuitants. These payments are guaranteed by the University for life. The donor may be eligible for a charitable deduction for a portion of the gift. Payments may be partially tax‑free.

The University’s development staff can help you make a gift through a Charitable Gift Annuity or other life income arrangements.

Testamentary gifts of retirement assetsAs tax‑deferred income, retirement assets make ideal estate gifts. Your estate will not owe income tax or estate tax.

Life Insurance policiesDonating a whole life or universal life insurance policy can be an affordable and flexible way to make a significant gift. Donating a life insurance policy in which “The Curators of the University of Missouri are made owner and beneficiary for the benefit of TSF” may provide a charitable income tax deduction for the current value of the policy and for future premium payments.

Endow your Kadlec Society giftBy endowing your gift you create a resource for TSF in perpetuity. You can create an endowment through your bequest, beneficiary designation or through a life income arrangement. Your endowed gift to TSF can be given in your honor or in honor of others you want to memorialize. The development staff can help you set up an agreement with the University to direct your planned gift into an endowment fund; to receive necessary language, please contact our office.

You can partially fund your endowment during your lifetime through a cash pledge that meets the minimum requirements. By so doing you can enjoy seeing your endowment at work during your lifetime with the knowledge your estate gift will build your endowment into a significant resource for TSF and positively impact future generations.

Gifts to the Tiger Scholarship Fund through the options listed above do not entitle the donor to seating priority benefits. Consult your tax advisor for more information about the tax benefits.
