The JoCo Marines were invited to Gabriel Manor Assisted Living Home located on Johnson Estate Rd. in Clayton by Activity Director Sarah Ellen Middendorf (centered) to pay respects to 82 year old Korean War Marine Veteran Jim Mitchell.

Commandant Timothy Daniel and Eagle Scout Coordinator Lewis

W. Rice III of the Johnston County Marine Corps League Carry-On

Detachment #1236 shared stories with Jim while he gave them a

history lesson on his life and times in the Korean War from 1950-

1952. The Korean War is often called “The Forgotten War”, but not

to the Marines that served and the Marines that followed. It began

when communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. When

the war ended in 1953, Korea was still divided and it remains that

way today. Thanks for sharing Marine Mitchell – Semper Fi!

The doghouse location is the VFW Post 2057

General Robert B.

Neller assumed the duties of Commandant of the Marine Corps on September 24th, 2015.

Marines, we've had another excellent month, with many activities. A Good Business award, a couple of Eagle Scout Good Citizenship awards, our Raffle drawing at the Clayton Harvest Festival, a Department Quarterly meeting, our quarterly VA Hospital visit and Bingo game, and a Birthday for our oldest Marine, World War II Veteran George Hartley. May we all live so long! As George says, just keep breathing! If you haven't already, now is the time to consider which Marine of the Detachment you would like to consider for Detachment Marine of the Year. That presentation will be made at our December Family Christmas Celebration on December 8th, so make your recommendations, and your plans for that event. Pot Luck always produces an enjoyable meal, and the Fellowship and Camaraderie that makes up such a gathering is Heartwarming. Looking forward to a good turnout. As we go forward, let's remember those Marines that have preceded us to that final duty station. Semper Fi! and Amen! ~ Commandant Timothy Daniel Congratulations to Percy for winning our raffle! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our raffle a success! It is really appreciated! I know that some of you spent hours at the gun shop in addition to all of the other tickets you sold. For some reason, it seems like I can sell anything except our fundraiser tickets! I do try! I'm thankful for all of you who were able to sell a lot of tickets. I look forward to seeing everyone at the October meeting! Semper Fi ~ Junior Vice Commandant Jodie Hislop

09 October 1917: The 8th Marines was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Although the regiment would not see combat in Europe during World War I, the officers and enlisted men of the 8th Marines participated in operations against dissidents in Haiti for over five years during the 1920s. This was the highest loss of life in a single day for Marines since D-Day on Iwo Jima in 1945.

28 October 1962: An 11,000-man 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade left Camp Pendleton by sea for the Caribbean during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
