HANGING OF THE GREEN: A beloved Jewell tradition. It’s an honor ifyou are one of those chosen by the Chaplain’s office to perform the ceremonial Hanging of the Green in Gano Chapel. The service also features performances of holiday music by Jewell’s musical ensembles.

Create A UNIQUE LEARNING MAP

ACT-IN (APPLIED CRITICAL THOUGHT AND INQUIRY) ACT-In is Jewell’s newest and mostdistinctive major program. ACT-In adds three applied learning experiences to the core coursestaken by all students. So any student can easily add the ACT-In major to his or her academic program, graduating with a double or even a triple major in just four years.

talents, and interests. Guided by inspiring faculty mentors and

advisors, you will create a personal learning map that sets you

on a life-long path to intellectual fulfillment and success.

How it beginsYou have ample time to shape your academic program — you won’t have to declare a major until the end of your second year. You have manychoices to explore during your first two years: Jewell has more than 55major programs, 22 minors, and 12 pre-professional programs that youcan combine any way you want to perfectly suit your interests and goals.

CRITICAL THOUGHT AND INQUIRY — THE JEWELL CORECURRICULUM: Critical Thought and Inquiry (CTI) is a program so well-designed, so coherent, so grounded in the skills and abilitiesrequired for any endeavor, that it has become a major all its own. Byexploring topics that include Culture and Traditions; Science, Technologyand the Human Experience; Power and Justice; and Sacred and Secular,you’ll understand the important connections between different areas ofknowledge — and learn more about yourself in the process.

THE RESPONSIBLE SELF: Part of the CTI curriculum, this is acourse that every new student takes. Through readings and discussions, you’ll reassess and reevaluate your point of view on just about everything. You’ll step outside yourself to examine what you really believe and, most important, why you believe it.It will change your life.

JOURNEY GRANTS: Beginning with the entering class of 2010, theJewell Journey becomes even more compelling. Every student who suc-cessfully completes the sophomore year will be eligible to receive a“Journey Grant” to fund a transformative hands-on experience. JourneyGrants will be a minimum of $2,000 to support self-designed researchprojects, study-away opportunities, internships, civic initiatives or serviceprojects at home or abroad. You can use a Journey Grant to start yourown business, or pool grants together to create substantive collaborativeprojects. If you can imagine it, you can do it.

ERIN MCNEIL, an Oxbridge history of ideas and philosophy major,is creating Project Beautiful Jewell, a series of photographs and interviewswith Jewell students designed to elicit a generational image of beauty.Her preliminary conclusion? She says that it is the “relationships youhave with other people that make you beautiful.”

A LEADERSHIPLEGACY PROJECT: Senior Pryor Fellows workas a group to identify aneed or problem in thegreater community(anywhere in the world) andimplement a project — fromconception to funding — thatprovides a solution.

• The first Pryor Legacy project involvedconstruction of a shelterhouse at Liberty’sMartha LaFite Thompson Nature Sanctuary.

• Pryor Legacy students raised awareness of the plight of homeless animals by sponsoring an adoption andeducation program built around a traditional dog show.

• Senior Pryor Fellowsdonated $2,000 of their own money to provide seed funding for a Challenger Sports Complex, to serve disabled children in the greater Kansas City area. They partnered with the Kansas City YMCA and the Kansas City Royals Charities to obtain a site and raise a total of $1.7 million for the project.

• Pryor Fellows partnered with Kiva, a website that coordinates person-to-person microloans to entrepreneurs indeveloping countries. Through a fundraisingand awareness campaign, students were able to raise enough moneyto provide direct loans to entrepreneurs for years to come.

Other Leadership OpportunitiesNONPROFIT LEADERSHIP MAJOR Jewell is one of only 13 college or universities in the country to offer thisundergraduate degree program that prepares students for rewarding careersin the nonprofit sector. It provides real-world education by combining in-depth coursework with internships, field study, and service. Nonprofitleadership is also offered as a minor to complement any major.

AMERICAN HUMANICSAlthough Jewell is the smallest college in country that participates in this national certificate program in nonprofit leadership, over the past twoyears Jewell students have received the largest number of Next GenerationNonprofit Leadership Awards from the National American Humanicsorganization and the Kellogg Foundation. A certificate in AmericanHumanics can be added to any major.

TUCKER LEADERSHIP LAB One of the premiere team-building experiences in the Midwest,the Lab’s ropes courses are among the first things you will notice when you visit campus. They stand as tangible evidence of the motivation anddetermination of Pryor Leaders who raised the money and helped todesign the course.

EMERGING LEADERS: This program gives first-year students the opportunity to step up onto theleadership stage. Key components of the program include:

• An intensive weekend retreat,during which you examine your leadership style, talents,and experiences

• A series of seminars conductedby Jewell faculty members,administrators and students

• Writing a reflective essay on your personal leadership role model

Oxbridge Honors ProgramTUTORIALS: Instead of conventional classes, Jewell Oxbridge studentsparticipate in small group or individual tutorials. Tutorials address classicand cutting-edge content and develop students’ own personal perspectives.Students prepare for tutorials through intensive reading of original worksand demonstrate their understanding of the material by writing analyticaland critical papers.
