Fall Jazz Weekend at the Terrace Inn 2014 Terrace Inn Jazz Weekends Booking Now

We’ve just returned from another “sold out” fall jazz weekend at the Terrace Inn in Petoskey (Bay View), Michigan. It was, as always, a weekend jam-packed with great classic jazz, food, shopping (oh, the resale shops in Petoskey and Harbor Springs!) and meeting and bond-ing with new jazzy friends. Our bands included Ray Heitger’s Cake-walkin’ Jass Band with Nicole Heitger on vocals, and Paul Klinger’s Easy Street Jazz Band featuring Kerry Price on vocals. !ere was a lot of jammin’ going on with the two bands, and of particular note, Kerry Price and Nicole Heitger together for the first time ever. Of the many amazing things seen that weekend, Pete Siers was seen playing the washboard, just one week before he played Carnegie Hall (not on washboard). From the ridiculous to the sublime? !e schedule is below, and if you’ve not experienced a Terrace Inn Jazz Weekend, sponsored by the GDJS, you can sign up now. As always, thanks to Innkeepers Mo and Patty Rave, and their fine sta" for all they do to make this legendary jazz weekend happen. Spring 2014 Mother’s Day Weekend – May 9-11, 2014 features Dave Tatrow and Friends with Dave Tatrow on trumpet, Dave Ben-nett on clarinet, Cody Henry on trombone, Doug Cobb on drums, Frank Steed on bass and Je" Kressler on piano. Fall 2014 Fall Jazz Weekend – October 24-26 will again be Ray Heitger’s Cakewalkin’ Jass Band featuring Nicole Heitger on vocals, and Paul Klinger’s Easy Street Jazz Band featuring Kerry Price on vocals.

!inking of You We lost three members of the Greater Detroit Jazz Society in

the past two months. Lee Lindsay, long-time member, friend, and volunteer lost her battle with cancer. Edith Teevin, one of our newer members also lost her battle to breast cancer. Trumpet player Bob King, friend and fellow musician to many local musicians also passed away. We will miss your smiles and friendship.

Several GDJS friends and members are going through medical issues, surgery or treatment of some kind as well. Let’s keep them all in our thoughts and prayers, and send wishes for a speedy recovery: Chuck Moss, Bill Hart, Jay Cornett and Kurt Beguhn.

Every day is a blessing!!! Q

!is information will be too late for print subscribers, however, on Monday, November 11, Monday, come out and celebrate 25 years of the 15-piece Paul Keller Orchestra with special guest vocalist and former Firefly Club owner Susan Chastain, charts by Duncan McMillan and Paul Keller. Congratulations to Paul and his "ne orchestra for 25 years of “the-best-of-the-best” big band music around. If you’ve not been to Zal Gaz Grotto on a Monday night for Paul’s big band jazz, mark your calendar as they are there every week. Paul usually also features a local high school or college jazz band for part of the evening and it’s reassuring to see the tremendous young talent coming on. Showtime on Monday is 7 p.m. and cover is $10. For more information about Paul’s many available CDs, visit www.PKORecords.com

!ere’s much more jazz at Zal Gaz Grotto. On Sunday, the incomparable Dr. James Dapogny brings Phil Ogilvie’s Rhythm Kings in at 5 p.m. (sometimes 6 p.m. so watch my jazz blasts if you have e-mail). More obsure old tunes with Dr. Dapogny (the world’s foremost authority on Jelly Roll Morton, among other good things about him). Lots of fun dancers to watch or join. She became such a big hit on the jazz circuit that when Paul resigned the Steamboat position this summer, the festival direc-tors and fans across the country insisted that we keep her in our line-up.

!e Dave Bennett Quartet is also on the CIJF line-up, so we’ve got two of Michigan’s favorite musicians appearing in Decatur this year. Also appearing will be Cornet Chop Suey, Tom Rigney & Flambeau, Bob Draga, Nicki Parrott, Randy Reinhart, Marilyn Keller, Stephanie Trick and Danny Coots – to name a few. !ere will be four venues going all weekend, with Umbrella Parades, Late Night Jam Sessions, Gospel Services and Jazz Brunch … something for everyone. You won’t want to miss this one!

For those of you who might have an interest in the WWW New Year’s American Queen cruise on the Mississippi, we need to let you know that space has become VERY limited. I’d make that call today, if you want to go.

Last but not least, Dave Tatrow has been booked as an All-Star on the Jazzdagen/Crystal Symphony “Skyscrapers to Ice Castles” cruise to Iceland, which takes place June 1-14, 2014. !ere’s still plenty of room on this one.

Flyers for all of the WWW tours will be available at jazz club events, but if you would more information call Cathy Tatrow at (810) 631-4799. Q

Planet D Nonet Tribute to Billy Strahorn11-27, Wednesday, 8 pm, Cli" Bell’s 2030 Park Ave., Detroit, Michigan 48226, No Cover!Brand new charts by Joshua James, Michael Sailors, Duncan McMillan and Pat Prouty, as well as charts by David Berger and Chuck Isreals. If you are familiar with the jazz composition, “Take the A Train,” then you know something about not only Duke Elling-ton, but also Billy “SweetPea” Strayhorn, its composer. Stray-horn joined Ellington’s band in 1939, at the age of twenty-two. Ellington liked what he saw in Billy and took this shy, talented pianist under his wings. Neither one was sure what Strahorn’s function in the band would be, but their musical talents had attracted each other. By the end of the year Staryhorn had become essential to the Duke Ellington Band; arranging, composing, sitting-in at the piano. Billy made a rapid and almost complete assimilation of Elling-ton’s style and technique. It was di%cult to discern where one’s style ended and the other’s began. !e results of the Ellington-Staryhorn collaboration brought much joy to the jazz world.www.billystrayhorn.com/1997/biography.htm www.facebook.com/PlanetDNonet.Detroitwww.planetdnonet.comJustin Jozwaik / alto sax and cl, Jim Holden / tenor sax and cl, Joshua, James / bari and alto sax, cl, James O’Donnell / trum-pet, flügelhorn & vocal, Ken Ferry / trumpet and flügelhorn, John “T-Bone” Paxton /trombone and vocal, Michael Zaporski / piano, Shannon Wade / stringbass, RJ Spangler with special guest Camille Price on vocals.
