October is the month that American history recognizes Chris-topher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas in 1492. Although controversial on many levels, perhaps we should simply rec-ognize this month as a time of discovery. Recently, I was seeking to encourage a “sister-friend” who was experiencing significant challenges in several areas of

her life. She doubted herself in the many roles she played: mother, sister, wife, friend, etc. My mind immediately went to scriptures that I find reassuring on a daily basis. I realize the importance of having the Word of God hidden in my heart so I can draw from it as needed. I developed a list of affirmations that help in my discovery of what makes me the beautifully, brilliant woman that God intended me to be. I recite them frequently as a means of self-validation and empowerment. I shared them with my “sister-friend,” and now with my sorors, in hopes that you will be encouraged to discover your own ways to affirm what you believe and share with others as the opportunity presents itself: I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14) I am blessed, increased, and highly favored of God (Psalms 5:12) I am a perfectly, powerful presence. (Psalms 18:32) I am a good steward over all that God has given me. (I Peter 4:10) When I am tempted to say something that will be unfruitful, I purposely decide to be quieter than usual. (I Thessalonians 4:11) I study to show myself approved unto God. (II Timothy 2:15) My children rise up and call me blessed, and my husband praises me. (Proverbs 31:28) Discover the beauty, splendor and radiance that you have been endowed with and continue to shine forth in the Alpha

Kappa Alpha tradition of service to all mankind. You are an awesome wonder. Enjoy this Month of Discovery sorors!

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: A CALL TO ACTION! A huge thanks to everyone who participated in the Sep-tember 19th Third Thursday event, Strong MINDS: A Hu-man Trafficking Forum. With the Washington, DC area listed as one of the “Top 5” U.S. markets for human traf-ficking, Zeta Chi Omega answered the call to generate awareness in the fight to eradicate human trafficking in our community. Moderated by our own Soror Crystal Lander, our panel of experts featured: Ms. Tina Frundt, a former child human trafficking victim and Founder/Executive Director of Court-ney's House; Mr. Maurice Middleberg, Executive Director of Free the Slaves; and Dr. Roselyn Aker-Black (Dr. Roz), family psychiatrist and noted columnist. We learned about the signs of human trafficking, its effects, and what we can do as a community. The pre-program social hour also served as a reactivation event for sorors in the area who joined us for the event. If you attended and have not com-pleted an online evaluation, please do so today.

The AKA Stop ’N Swap Shop generated a lively exchange of pink and green items during our September 7th General Membership meeting and Chapter Retreat. Sorors donat-ed new, clean, and gently used pink and green items, including clothing and a variety of AKA paraphernalia to make this a success. We thank you for your participation in our eco-friendly mar-ket and hope that all participants found pink and green items they can put to good use. The remaining items will be donated to the Membership Committee for Membership Intake Process tokens. Thanks for all you do.

NOVEMBER MEAL SERVICE November marks the last month in 2013 where we will provide our bi-monthly meal service. Let’s make this a Thanksgiving to remember for the residents at Carpenter’s Shelter. The meal service will take place on Sunday, No-vember 17, 2013 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM. All volunteers are asked to arrive early (no later than 11:30 AM) to assist with setup. If you are interested in serving, please contact Soror Kendra White ([email protected]). The meal service is a collaborative effort with Global Poverty.

We are proud to announce that due to your generosity, we were able to donate approximately 100 bras for our pro-gram human trafficking partner, “Free the Girls.” In addi-tion, we provided over 50 black hair care product items to Courtney’s House. 2. Know What You Want - Be clear about what you want. Money is just a means to getting what you want. The clearer you are about what you want, the greater the likelihood of it showing up in your life. Be sure that what you want also serves to provide value to others.

3. Invest In Yourself - You can always learn more. Take the time to invest in books, tapes, and classes that will give you new information and new ideas about what to do and how to do it. Never stop learning and never stop asking questions.

4. Build Multiple Streams of Income - Don't rely on just one source of income. Look for ways to build income streams by investing in things that produce ongoing income -- starting a business, writing a book, or lever-aging your knowledge on the Internet.

5. Teach Your Kids - Good money management starts at

a young age. Let your children know what you are doing and teach them how to manage their own mon-ey. Help them to see that saving a little out of every-thing they make can add up to future wealth.

6. Don't Be Afraid To Share - As you give of your time

and money you will find that your prosperity will be increased. Don't be afraid to give money away to causes and organizations you believe in. As you share what you have, the universe will continue to provide more of what you want.

7. Protect What You Have - As you build your net worth

make sure that you put the proper insurance in place to protect what you have worked hard for, and don't forget to protect the largest asset you will ever have - your ability to make a living. Life and disability insur-ance are ways to leave the legacy you would have left, if you had had the time to earn it.

In last month’s newsletter, I introduced two pretty scary topics appropriate to discuss during October: Incidental and Subsidiary motions. Incidental Motions must be de-cided before business can proceed (Point of Order, Point of Information). Subsidiary Motions help the assembly dispose of the main motion and sometimes other motions.

SEPTEMBER QUIZ ANSWERS!! 1. How many Incidental Motions are there? 13 2. How many Subsidiary Motions are there? 7

EXTRA CREDIT List the incidental and subsidiary motions.

INCIDENTIAL MOTIONS Appeal Close Nominations or Close the Polls Consideration by Paragraph or Seriatim Create a Blank Division of a Question Division of the Assembly Objection to the Consideration of a question Parliamentary Inquiry Point of Information Point of Order Reopen Nominations or the Polls Request for Permission to Withdraw a Motion Suspend the Rules

SUBSIDIARY MOTIONS Lay on the Table Previous Question (close debate) Limit or Extend (Limits of debate) Postpone to a Certain Time (or Definitely) Commit or Refer Amend Postpone Indefinitely Next month, we’ll define these motions and talk about how helpful they can be in moving business along.

Sorors, Please join us in thanking Ms. Aronica Glover for her enor-mous contribution to the Evelyn Syphax video. We will present her with the thank you cards signed by you at the June meet-ing, a certificate of appreci-ation and a $100 gift card before the October meet-ing. The Archives Committee has already started working to-ward winning the first Regional Archives Award and the Anne Mitchem-Davis Boule Award. There are nine pieces of documentation that will be submitted by January 20, 2014 to the Regional Archives Committee Representative. More updates are forthcoming. When submitting and or donating items to the Archives please label these items. A detailed description or invento-ry list with your name and date should be given to the Ar-chivist when turning over items. The Archives Committee is constructing yearly photo albums. Please submit any pictures that you would like to donate (include names, event and date) so that we can place them in the albums. Please help us collect some important facts. We need the names of all of the Zeta Chi Omega Ivies Beyond the Wall since 1956. Email their names to Soror Monique Robinson at [email protected] . We are looking for a 1950's reel-to-reel that documents the beginning of Zeta Chi Omega. If you recall, Protocol is the Responsi-bility of all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, and all are charged to serve! With the upcoming MIP and cluster events, all sorors are reminded of the appropriate attire to wear. The following PROTOCOL SMART tips, along with the corresponding page number of where this information can be found in The Official Guide to Alpha Kappa Alpha Protocol manual, are provided: 1.
