The IR-4 Program forRegistration of Biopesticides
MICHAEL BRAVERMANIR-4 Biopesticide Coordinator
IR-4
• IR-4’s mission: to providegrowers with safe, effective andeconomical tools to control pestson minor crops.
•In 1982 a mandate for biopesticideswas added
WHY HAVE A BIOPESTICIDE PROGRAM ?
1. Increased interest in “organic production”. Support minorcrops.
2. Minor crops –no conventional alternatives.
3. Mingling of technology – Integrated Pest Management.
Integrated Residue Management.
4. Merging of technology. Bt was non-conventional, Bt isconventional(adoption by “conventional growers”).

WHAT IS A BIOPESTICIDE?
IR-4 is involved with registration so:
EPA definition = IR4 definition
Biopesticide does not equal organic and organic does notequal biopesticide
Spinosad has organic formulation but is not defined byEPA as a biopesticide.
