  • IPS DIRECTORY OF THE WORLD’S PLANETARIUMS

    2003 edition

©2003 by the International Planetarium Society

Welcome to the 2003 edition of the IPS Directory of the World’s Planetariums. This directoryprovides an extensive list of planetariums from around the world and includes all planetariumfacilities known to IPS. The Directory has been extensively revised and updated since theprevious edition was published in 2000.

The Editor wishes to thank the following individuals who provided especially extensive andcomplete updates for planetariums in their regional affiliate or geographic area, either directly tothe Editor or by means of affiliate publications or web sites:

Shoichi Itoh (Japan)Thomas Kraupe and Andreas Scholl (Germany, Switzerland, & Austria)Jean-Michel Faidit (France)Loris Ramponi (Italy)Teresa Grafton (UK & Ireland)Vadim Belov (Russia)Ormis Rossi (Brazil)Gabriel Muñoz (Mexico)Milo Grootjen (Netherlands & Belgium)Glen Moore (Australia)Lydmila Rybko (Ukraine)Jan Sifner (Czech Republic)

The Editor also wishes to thank the following individuals who provided further updates forplanetariums in their regional affiliate or geographic area:

    John Dickenson (Canada)Lars Broman (Nordic countries)Cui Shi-Zhu (China)Andrew Buckingham (New Zealand)Arif Abbasi (Pakistan)Salin Weerabutra (Thailand)T. C. Samaranayaka (Sri Lanka)Debiprosad Duari (India)Jose C. Guirado (Spain)Rolan Amin (Egypt)

The Editor also wishes to thank the following individuals (and their co-workers) who contributedcomplete lists of their company's recent installations:

    Jeri Panek (Evans & Sutherland)Joyce Towne (Spitz)Shigeki Ogawa (Minolta)Toshi Yasuda (Goto)Laura Misajet (Zeiss)Christophe Bertier (R.S. Automation)Joanne Young (AudioVisual Imagineering)Ginger Savage (Sky-Skan)

  • The Editor further wishes to thank the many hundreds of U.S. planetarians who returned updateforms mailed to them by the Editor and the many international planetarians who responded todirect inquiries from the Editor or who furnished updates using the on-line form.

The Editor further wishes to thank the many planetarians who returned updates with their IPSmembership renewals and Shawn Laatsch for entering these updates in the database.

We have also examined web sites, IPS and affiliate conference delegate rosters, andmiscellaneous sources for non-responding planetariums and for planetariums outside of regionalaffiliates or otherwise not part of IPS to ensure their information is as accurate as possible.

Since the 2000 edition, we have brought all US area codes up to date (again) and put all phonenumbers (including those of FSU countries) in international format with current country codes. We have added an index of star projectors and an index of US and Japanese cities. We havealso refined the listing of staff and technical information and removed most planetariums thathave closed. Since the planetarium and vendor directories are now being co-published, we havealso removed to the Resource Directory any vendors who had previously been listed here (exceptplanetariums that are also vendors).

The general organization and layout of the previous editions have been retained, but with severalenhancements owing to the conversion from print to electronic as the primary medium ofpublication. We have added email links to the index of planetarians and have added a file withlinks to planetarium web sites and email addresses.

We have released all files in PDF format for their universal access, their ease of reading andsearching, and ease of printing to a paper copy if desired. For further ease of use, we havecreated separate files, all less than 1 Meg in size, for the header material, the Directory itself, andfor each index.

We have attempted to make this Directory as complete, up-to-date, and accurate as possible. Itis inevitable however that the Directory will contain some errors and omissions, and theinformation is always in a state of flux as new planetariums are being built, staff members flowfrom facility to facility, and postal, email, and web addresses and phone numbers change. IPS isnot responsible for information that has changed since we have received updates, nor forconsequences of typographical errors or omissions, nor can we be held liable for damagesarising from the use of information or descriptions contained in this Directory.

An update form is included in the Directory. If you spot errors or know of information that haschanged or needs to be added, please contact the Editor by email ,fax (1-419-372-9938), or postal mail (Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, Bowling Green StateUniversity, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403, USA). An on-line update form is available on the IPSweb site .

This Directory is provided to IPS members free of charge as a benefit of membership.

    Dale W. Smith, Editor31 May 2003

  • Telephone number information

    International calling

To make an international call, you must first dial your country's international access code, represented in the directory listings by the + sign, followed by the number that is listed in thedirectory. In the United States the country code is 1 and the international access code is "011".Calls within and between the USA and Canada normally need dial only the number that islisted, including the country code 1, except for local calls. Domestic calls within other countriesomit the country code, but commonly precede the remaining digits with a "0".

    Toll-free calling

Numbers in the United States with area code 800, 888, 877, and 866 are toll-free for manycallers. The toll-free range usually includes all of the United States and sometimes includesCanada. If you call from outside the toll-free range, the call will be billed as a normal toll call.

    US/Canadian area codes

Many area codes in the United States have been changed in the last several years. To ourknowledge, we have printed the area code in effect at press time. Information on recent andpending changes may be found on the web at .
