Adams, Samuel A. 1933-1988

Gift of Mrs. Samuel Adams

September 1995 Collection of 51 paige boxes. Scope and Contents Note: The Sam Adams papers contain the story of Adams' career as a CIA analyst: his allegation of a discovery that the J-2 [Intelligence Branch] MACV [Military Assistance Command Vietnam] order of battle seriously underestimated the number of the Viet Cong opposing the US forces in Vietnam led to his eventual leaving of the CIA; writing an article for Harpers magazine on the controversy; aiding a CBS reports documentary on the Pentagon's alleged coverup; becoming a defendant in the lawsuit brought by General William Westmoreland; bringing suit himself against Renata Adler for her writings about him and the documentary; and writing a book WAR OF NUMBERS: An Intelligence Memoir (posthumously published by Steerforth Press; 1994) about the Vietnam War and the order of battle controversy. David Halberstam wrote of the trial that if it served no other purpose than to get Robert McNamara under oath and on the record it would have been worth it. Sam Adams was a consultant on the discovery process of the lawsuit, guiding the document search, writing the questions to be asked, and attending most of the depositions, including those of McNamara, Dean Rusk, Walt Rostow, Richard Helms, William Colby and William Westmoreland. The trial documents and 9,745 pages of transcript formed the only major investigation of the Vietnam War. These records form the bulk of the Adams Collection. Adams produced an additional study on the controversy over military munitions transported through the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville.
