What is ISSI?

ISSI is a nonprofit organization set up in Bern in 1995 and foundedunder Swiss law with an initial endowment by the leading Swissspace company Oerlikon Space AG, formerly Contraves Space AG.

The European Space Agency (ESA), the Swiss Confederation, theUniversity of Bern, and the Swiss National Science Foundationprovide the financial resources for ISSI’s operation.

Three statutory bodies and a supporting association interact regularly inmatters of strategy, operation, finance or public relations.

The Goals of ISSI

ISSI is an Institute of Advanced Studies. Its main function is to achieve a deeper

understanding of the results from differentspace-research missions,

ground-based observations andlaboratory experiments, addingvalue to those results through

multidisciplinary researchin an atmosphere of

internationalcooperation.

Keywords

> INTERDISCIPLINARY:ISSI offers a forum for space scientists, ground-based observers andexperimenters, theorists, and modellers to work together, analyse andcompare data from a multitude of instruments on a variety of spacecraftand ground based facilities, thus enabling them to extract or create morescience with little additional expenditure.

> INTERNATIONAL:More than 2000 individual scientists from more than 36 countries haveparticipated in ISSI activities during the first 12 years of its existence.

> SMALL Staff, Facilities and Budget butWIDE Horizons:Only a dozen staff members are available to handle the complexities of anannual programme which sees some 500 external scientists giving life toan intricate network of Workshops, International Teams, Forums in theuser-friendly but limited facilities of the Institute.

Working Tools

> WORKSHOPS* :Up to 50 invited scientists working on a scientific theme; duration one week(possibly twice). Outcome published in the refereed Space Sciences Seriesof ISSI published by Springer as hardcover books and in Space ScienceReviews.

> WORKING GROUPS*:Smaller groups (~10 to 20 participants) on more technical themes; severalmeetings of about one week each. Output is published in the ISSI ScientificReports Series published by ESA.

> INTERNATIONAL TEAMS**:3 to 15 participants, flexible schedule, e.g., two periods of one weekseparated by 9 months. Publications in scientific journals.

> FORUM:Assemble up to 20 participants to debate or review science topics orscience policy matters.

* Themes of Workshops and Working Groups are defined by ISSI in consultation withthe Science Committee.

** Topics of International Teams are proposed by the community following an open AOand recommended by the Science Committee to ISSI for selection.

The Place of ISSI in the Recycling andAccumulation of Knowledge

> ISSI hosts visiting scientists, workshops, scientific teams, working groupsand forums of reflection

> To conduct its duties, ISSI rests on a small number of staff and post-docpositions

> ISSI thus increases and amplifies the science output of space missionsthrough the interdisciplinary analysis of the disparate sets of data that theyprovide.

> ISSI is not responsible for developing experiments or/and space hardware> ISSI is not operating instruments or facilities> ISSI is not fulfilling the role of a space agency

What Makes ISSI Unique

> Interdisciplinary approach: ISSI is at its best when it bringstogether communities that do not otherwise talk to each otherand addresses themes also outside the mainstream.

> ISSI approach is integrative; it provides a forum foraddressing and resolving controversy.

> ISSI offers an academic working environment in relativeseclusion with a high level of support and state-of-the-art,continuously updated infrastructure.

> The ISSI label is a quality stamp of the work done there; thebook series are testimony of the “ISSI effect”.

> ISSI is not (only) funded to do science, but to catalyse andenable it.

New Workshops I

Planetary Atmospheric Electricity

is the first workshop of a new series of joint workshops between ISSIand Europlanet, funded by the European Commission and the

International Space Science Institute

> Convenors: F. Leblanc, M. Blanc, K. Aplin, R.G. Harrison, M.Kamogawa, S. Klos, J.-P. Lebreton, M. Parrot, S. Pulinets, R.

Treumann and Y. Yair Date: July 23-27, 2007

The objective of this joint ISSI-Europlanet Project is to discuss ourpresent understanding of atmospheric electricity at Earth and on the

other planets of our solar system.

New Workshops II

From the Outer Heliosphere to the Local Bubble> Convenors: J. Linsky, D. Breitschwerdt, P. Frisch, C. Heiles, V.

Izmodenov, E. Möbius, F. Palla and R. von Steiger> Date: 15-19 October 2007, Workshop at ISSI

Recent satellite observations and theoretical developments haveled to rapid progress in our understanding of the physical

processes and phenomena that occur in the outerheliosphere and in the nearby interstellar medium located

inside the Local Bubble. This Workshop will compare the newobservations with the theory and summarize the rapid

progress being made in these areas and emphasize theinteractions between the heliosphere and its near and distant

surroundings.

New Workshops III

The Origin and Dynamics of Solar Magnetism

> Convenors: M. Thompson, L.Culhane, A. Kosovichev, A. Nordlund,S. Solanki, J.-P. Zahn and A. Balogh

> Date: 21-25 January 2008

The themes of the workshop will be the solar dynamo, magnetic fluxtransport, its emergence and dissipation, its variability in time and

space, the coupling of magnetic fields on different scales, techniquesand expectations from forecasting, and the role of past, current andfuture space missions and observations. It is the first workshop of a

linked series on the subject of Magnetism in the solar system.
