MISSION The International SeaKeepers Society promotes oceanographic research, conservation and education through direct involvement with the yachting community. SeaKeepers enables the yachting community to take full advantage of their unique potential to advance marine sciences and to raise awareness about global ocean issues.

PROGRAM ACTIVITY BY AREAYR 2014

PROGRAMS The SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Yachts Program is our foremost initiative in accomplishing our mission and goals. The program is comprised of scientist-led expeditions, instrument deployments and educational outreach events.

DISCOVERY YACHTS MAP

“Over the last 15 years we have averaged about 60 days per year on the bay cruising, sailing and racing and we have always tried to support environmental efforts to improve the Bay. Today, I learned more than all those days combined and I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity.”- DISCOVERY Yacht Owner

FOUR OUTREACH PROGRAMS

FIVE DISCOVERY YACHTEXPEDITIONS

ELEVEN INSTRUMENT DEPLOYMENTS

Five scientist-led expeditions, which included groundbreaking work in genome sequencing that was covered by The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle and other U.S. national publications; and two significant shark tagging research trips in the Bahamas, were completed. Furthermore, projects involving marine mammal research and the development of ocean monitoring devices for oil spill research were accomplished over several day trips. SeaKeepers works with academia, NGOs and government in planning and executing missions.

Throughout the year, SeaKeepers facilitated eleven instrument deployments. These included Argo floats deployed as part of the oceanography course curriculum onboard the Semester at Sea ship MV Explorer during the fall of 2014. Additionally, continually deployed to support the Global Drifter Program through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and World Meteorological Organization. SeaKeepers Drifters were deployed in the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Yacht vessels hosted four educational outreach programs ranging in location from the Bahamas to Newport, Rhode Island. Each educational trip was customized to satisfy the needs of the individual school or NGO involved. For example a day on the water with school children from Bimini concluded with the deployment of a SeaKeepers Drifter, which is still being monitored today. Other programs included studying wave movement, wind and currents and plastic pollution commonly observed in harbors in the Northeast of the United States.

In 2014 SeaKeepers launched the DISCOVERY Art Program, an artistic strand of programming designed to engage the general public in ocean conservation and awareness regardless of their proximity to the coast. Drifter Art is the primary vehicle where artists use the SeaKeepers Drifter shell to create works of art for display to create awareness about drifter deployments. In 2014, ten local artists contributed to this program. In addition, the title of Featured SeaKeepers Artist of the Year was established to appoint a professional artist to the SeaKeepers mission and to provide a creative component in support of SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Yacht Program.

“Our porpoise study depends on high quality photographs that can only be taken from a stable platform at sea. Thanks to the yacht provided by SeaKeepers, we were able to go farther and get more images in a single day than we have ever done before. This collaboration produced the kind of valuable scientific data that will allow us to tell the story of the porpoises and their return to San Francisco Bay.”- Bill Keener, co-founder of Golden Gate Cetacean Research.
