Dear Dr. Xuma,

I am writing to enquire whether you w ill be in this country next January, when we are holding the Missionary iixhibition described in the enclosed leaf- -let. I f so, we should be most grateful for your help in particular at a debate we are planning on the subject " I s the attitude of the South African Government to the Natives justifiable?". We feel thos is nearly related to the Missionary enterprise, and a subject about which there is a great deal of ignorance. iilven if you should not yourself be here, you may perhaps be able to suggest the name of a Uative exponent who could speak with real knowledge of the matter? We really want a reasoned sta- -tement from both angles.

We shali be most grateful for any help y)u feel able to give us.

With kind regards

Yours sincerely

F .P .Harris

Dr* Rislen Russell 44 Wlngpole Street London, W. 1*

Dear Dr, Russell:

A short vhile ago Prince Nyabongo spoke to you concerning a proposal to establish in England a chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity* He no doubt presented to you somethin? of the history, purposes aixl aims of the fraternity, and mentioned the nature of lt3 far-reaching program and the outstanding character of its personnel*The achievements of Alpha Phi Alpha and the distinctions attained by many of its r^embers in the social and professional life of our sroup and of the nation have combined to make it the pre-eminent organization of it* kind among university-trained men of the United States*

With the view of forging a link which would promote a deeper understanding and create a stronger bond of friendship between the university and professional men of our group on the two sides of the Atlantic, the General Convention of Alpha Phi Alpha, assembled in biennial session In Hew Orleans, Louisiana, in December 1937, authorised Prince Nyabongo and me to Inquire into the feasibility of establishing a chapter of the organization in England, and, if our findings warranted, to proceed with the plan*

It was In accordance with the Convention's action and authorization that Prince Nyabongo spoke to you concerning this matter. As you indicated an interest in participating in the realization of this uniertaklng, he left with you a copy of the Sphinx, the official monthly publication of the fraternity, and informed you that you would subsequently receive more definite word of the proposal*

I am pleased, therefore, to Inform yo that plans have b e n completed for the Inauguration of the proposed chapter. The meeting for the affiliation of charter members with the new chapter and their introduction into the fraternitv will be held on Sunday Austust 7, 1938, at 8j30 P*M* at the Student Movement Ronse, 32 Russell Square, London, W*C* 1* We hope that this arrangement will be convenient for you*

Page 13: THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON AFRICAN AFFAIRS...Max Yergan Director THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON AFRICAN AFFAIRS Eight W est Fortieth Street, New York Telephone: CHickering 4-6390

It will be a pleasure to welcome yo" Into the fraternity at that time, and to extend to you the fellowship of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Very sincerely yours,

African Appreciation and Gratitude.

I am a full blooded African born and bred at Manzana, Engcobo Cape Province, South Africa.

I later emigrated to America in search of opportunities for higher and professional education. America was the only plate as far as I was made to understand that would give one a chance to earn money towards educating oneself.

I wanted education in order to lead and serve my people.

I had no money but ambition with courage and determination which could be better described as "blissful ignorance". I call it 'Blissful ignorance* because I doubt if I would now face, with present knowledge, the difficulties I encounted and overcame.

Whatever I accomplished was providential.

I was struggling through the Herfibwifestern University Medical School during 1923-124 when I was introduced through the instance of Mr. Grover Little of the Y.M.C.A. in Chicago to Mr./ Samuel Insull.

Dr. Justus Matthews of Minneapolis, Minnesota, had paid mytuition,

I wanted a loan for 3©0 dollars to assist defray my current expenses, I had no security in the world but my face. Mr. Insull heard my story sympathetically but suddenly put on his stern business fee and told us with Mr. P.J.Enroe that he did not have that much money and that if someone-else could be found to assist with $175 he, Mr. Insull, would give the other half.

Mr, Bc.Enroe and I then approached the late Mr, Victor Lawson then Publisher of the Chicago daily news through his Secretary Mr, Rogers with success,

I deposited the $300— with Mr. P.J.Mc Enroe as Secretary- Treasurer of the fund. I would draw on him from time to time until the amount was used up.

Upon completing my Medical course at Nortwestern University Medical School, I went to report to^ltoeInsull - mind you, I said nothing and beak never said anything since about repayment of the loan.

and Tropical Medicine Keppel Street - Gower Street W.C. 1 London, England

Dear Xuma:

On reaching the office this morning I found your wonderfull letter and hasten to tell you we were very much disappointed in learning that you were returning to South Africa direct, which means we were deprived of a visit with you.

You will be interested to know that we had a visit with Max Yergen when he spoke at the International Relations Conference the last of June.We will never forget our happy visit with you a year ago and I should very much enjoy a close personal correspondence with you.

Yes our mutual friend, Mr. Insull, has gone to his great reward. I think it would have been quite appropriate for you to have sent a tribute to the Associated Press representing Africa. On your return when time permits, would you prepare such an article and send it to me and let me take it to the Chicago Daily News. I will also present a copy to Mr. Insull's son. Therefore be sure and send your statement to me and I will have it printed and return several copies to you and let you know quite frankly the comments from the public.

We enjoy and prize deeply your friendship. My very best wishes to you as you return to Africa.

Cordially yours,

Grover J. Little

Copy.7th October, 1938.

Messrs McEwan, Fearnhead & Pinkerton,P.O.Box 3324,JOHANNESBURG.

Dear Sirs,Re Dr. A. 3. Xuma versus Rev R. R. Wright.

We refer to our letter of the 24th August last and have to report that as we were uncertain whether we should sue tne Cnurch direct or Rev. Wright in his capacity as Bishop administrating the affairs of the Church in Capetown, summons was not issued.

We wrote him asking him to call on us on his return to Capetown. We accordingly interviewed him this morning and feel sure that we definitely have no claim against Bishop Wright personally as he was at all times acting purely on behalf of the Church. From what he told us, it seems as if with regard to delegates going to the Conference in America, the procedure is as follows: - The Conference is called in South Africa and delegates nominated to represent South Africa at the Conference in America. When the delegates are approved of, the Church makes the necessary arrangements for fares, etc.

According to Bishop Wright, Mrs Morake, to whom our

advanced the amount now claimed, was never nominated as a delegate for America, although in our client1s letter to you dated 21st September, 1937, he states that the money was advanced at the request of the presiding Bishop Simms by letter dated 6th January 1933. Bishop Wright assures us that should such letter of authority be produced, he will do all in his power to have the money refunded to our client. Bishop Wright informed us that he understands that Dr. Xuma is returning to South Africa shortly.

Will you kindly get into touch with client and find our whether he has in his possession the letter from Dr. Simms, dated 6th January 1938, requesting him to advance the money, and if so, to forward same to us when we have no doubt we will recover the amount due to client.

Yours faithfully,(Signed Dichmnnt & Dichmont
