Meet The Inca

• The Inca were an ancient Meso-American civilization.

• Their empire stretched all along the western coast of South America.

• They were at their greatest from the 1430’s to the 1530’s.

The Inca Government

• The Inca Government was a kind of a dictatorship.

• The absolute leader was called the Sapa Inca, meaning son of the sun god Inti.

• There were four men called Apos, they each ruled 1 out of four regions.

• There were other officials like tax collectors.

The Inca Military

• Most men were required to serve in the military for six or seven years.

• Some people stayed in the military forever and became a professional soldier.

• The military was not normally used to capture other tribes and people. They would only use it if they refused to come into the Inca Empire. The Inca would even incorporate some of their beliefs into the Inca religion.

Inca Diplomatic Interactions

• The Inca were the dominant culture. They used military force and threat.

• They had no real opposition so they had no reason for diplomatic interaction.

• By the time the Spaniards came the Inca were one of the only remaining distinct cultures.
