BTcapturedtheSaracensvs.GloucesterAvivaPremiershiprugbymatchinLondoninSeptember2013foralivedem-onstrationatIBCinAmsterdam.Toaccomplishthis,theyused three 4K UHDTV Sony cameras and mixers. To transmit thepreviouslyrecordedmatch,BTwilluseSony’sSR-R1000storagesystemandEricssonAVP2000ContributionEncod-erstoencodethefour3G-SDIfeedsinrealtime,which aretransmittedasatotal100MbpsstreamfromBTTowerinLondonovertheBTGlobalMediaNetworktothe
TheEvolutionof4K4K UHDTV is the next evolutionary step for television broad-casting. Just as Intelsat supported the smooth transition from SD to HD, the company is ready to support the transitiontofull-timedistributioninthisnewformat.

IntelsatOne pointofpresenceinNewYork.Intelsattrans-ports the signal via the IntelsatOne terrestrial network toitsteleportinRiverside,California,whereituplinksto Galaxy17,Intelsat’spremierregionalandleaguesportsneighborhoodintheUnitedStates,usingNewtec’smodu-latingequipmentwithDVB-S2Xstandard.Theresultisa4:2:2,10-bit,4KUHDTVsignalat60framesperseconddisplayedintheIntelsatandEricssonboothsatNAB.Inaddition,adown-convertedHDstreamofthesameeventwill be provided and transmitted from BT Tower over the same path, allowing viewers to experience the differences between HD and UHDTV.

Whatis4K?“Ultra High Definition”, or “Ultra HD” typically refers to video signals and displays that have an aspect ratio ofatleast16:9andaminimumresolutionof 3,840×2,160pixels.
“4K”UHDTVisso-calledbecauseitgenerallyreferstoatelevisionresolutionof3840pixelsby2160lines,whichis2x the horizontal and 2x the vertical dimensions of HDTV.
The frame rate for “true” 4K UHDTV would also be twice thelevelforHDTV,about60framespersecond.While4Kcan be shown on a display with a lower frame rate, motion will not be as smoothly rendered as at the higher rate.
