To start with the subject, this slide shows a typical secondary transformer substation with MV switchgear 8DJH (for example, RRT), transformer and low-voltage part as frequently found in Central Europe. Today, one can find the request of 3 different levels of intelligence. The first level comprises just monitoring, required for example, to achieve higher availability or faster fault location. Apart from monitoring, the second level additionally offers the possibility of remote control, thus minimizing the downtimes. Long ways of the fault-clearing teams to often distant transformer substations are therefore a thing of the past. The third level provides the option of complete power-flow control by the secondary transformer substation. This refers, for example, to the activation of reactive-power compensation or the management of decentralized power supplies by actively triggering the inverters.

Let’s have a look at the structure of an “intelligent transformer substation”: The actual Ring Main Unit (RMU) [for example, our most recent product 8DJH] features optionally an interface to which an RTU cubicle is connected. The interface is required to enable a possible fast and simple replacement at the end of the service life of the RTU – which is earlier than that of the RMU – or in case of an RTU failure. Besides the real RTU, the RTU cubicle contains an energy storage in the form of a lead gel battery, or a capacitor storage. Communication to a telecontrol node [for example, to a substation automation system SICAM PAS or SICAM AK 1703], or directly to the network control center is done with wireless (GSM, GPRS), telephone or Ethernet systems via the telecontrol protocols IEC 60870-5-101, or 104. Upcoming is the discussion to use the IEC 61850. The IEC working group 17 and Siemens as a part of this working group are working on the development of IEC 61850 today.
