48thENGINEERS DAY
48th Engineers’Day was celebrated by Gujarat State Center at Ahmedabad to
commemorate the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya on 15th September
2015. Prof Dr. Vinod R. Shah, Former Professor, CEPT University, Ahmedabad and currently
the Director, Vinod Shah Consultants Private Ltd delivered a lecture cum presentation on
the theme “Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era”. Speaking at the occasion he said
57th ANNUAL REPORT 2015—169
Data is processed and analyzed and a reconstructed picture of historical events and/or
projection of future events is termed Information, which is internalized as knowledge.
Knowledge is externalized as Information and this is stored and captured as Data. Thus
Data- Information –Knowledge cycle moves. Speaking about ages he said earlier it was
Agriculture age dependent on farmers, which got transformed into Industrial age producing
factory workers. Till recently we were living in Information age producing knowledge
workers but 21st Century is of Conceptual age which shall be based on Human Intelligence,
Intuition and Discretion. He described graphically the waves of innovation and said currently
we are passing through the 6th wave as per UNESCO report. He posed a question whether
challenge was the same for Visvesvaraya and Brunel and replied in affirmative adding that
the form has changed.
Explaining the distinguished feature of technology of knowledge era, he said that newer
technologies are invented at faster pace, communication is faster, there is a larger market
because of viability of globalization using technology, obsolescence is faster, and there is
high impact of disruptive technologies. Other features include networked economy,
intellectual property rights, cyber laws etc. He said that products and concepts prevailing at
one time are suffering from obsolescence and dematerialization like slide rules, type writers
are now history. There is revolution in communication with the advent of mobile, smart
phones and internet. This has made pen-friends, snail mails obsolete. Explaining further
about the disruptive technologies he stated that with introduction of completely new
approaches, there is potential to create a new industry or transform an existing one. He
cited the example of revolutionary – radical innovations like digital photography, high-
temperature superconductors and evolutionary innovations – formed by the convergence of
previously separate research areas like MRI imaging, faxing, and electronic banking. He
while speaking about networked economy stated that there is emerging economic order
within the information society through social networks as against Industrial era where an
individual was in the focus.
Summing up he said that the knowledge era is posing a larger challenge; the question is
who will take it -- Academia? Industry? Or future engineers? There is a paradigm shift: From
Industrial to knowledge era. Education - production factories called schools shall have to
change the approach as the requirements are totally different.
Shri S. J. Desai, Chairman, Gujarat State Center welcomed Dr. Shah earlier and wished all
engineers present a very happy Engineers Day. He paid glorious tribute to Sir M.
Visvesvaraya. Council member Shri N.B. Vasoya presented the Life Sketch of Sir
The Institution of Engineers (India), Gujarat State Centre, Ahmedabad
Visvesvaraya. Thereafter the Chief Guest and others joined in garlanding the photo of Sir
Visvesvaraya. A film on life of Sir Visvesvaraya was also shown.
Shri C. V. Nadpara, Hon secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
TECHNICAL ACTIVITIESAn organization is only as strong as its connection to its members. IEIGSC Conventions
and Seminars serve to enhance the relationship of members to IEIGSC—and to one
another. This philosophy also extends to making connections across industry and other
organizations, with the goal of finding opportunities to expand its core values and
mission. Our programs demonstrate significant contribution from our College students
to the advancement of engineering for the benefit of our members and the profession
generally. IEIGSC ran 8 national level programs throughout the year attracting about
1680 delegates. Overall attendance of participants was 6173.

Supporting Women EngineersA number of barriers exist to the progression of larger numbers of women in
engineering, and these can be represented by the analogy of hurdles in a running race.
IEIGSC has therefore keeping above in mind constituted a Women Engineers Committee
and started doing Women-only programs for fulfilling the need of the hour. Beginning
was made by conducting one women-only program at L.D. Engineering College,
Ahmedabad on 31st July 2015. Looking to the encouraging response received, further
programs are being worked out.

Electronic Media & Social Media EngagementOur website www.ieigsc.org has been regularly updated to keep you posted about our
activities and future events.
We are also publishing our digital weekly digest of news, videos, views, photos related to
various engineering branches from world over in the form of IEIGSC Weekly every Sunday
morning.
Attempts to send newsletter in mail has partially succeeded as several members are yet to
respond to our frequent request of providing their email id to us.
IEI GSC continues what it started last year -- its social media connect by posting regularly and
updating its facebook, twitter, google plus, YouTube, slideshare and Linkedin pages. Response
is encouraging. Good suggestions for our working also have emanated from interaction on
social media. IEIGSC is slowly catching up as a brand in social media.
We also started during the year webcasting our Friday lectures on Google hangout so as to
reach out to our members staying outside Ahmedabad. These were also streamed
simultaneously on You Tube making them permanently available to the viewers. The scheme
had to be abandoned due to frequent net connectivity problems which could not be resolved
despite our best attempts. Plans are afoot to prepare WhatsApp Groups for each of the
engineering Divisions for interactive media.
