My grandmother, Jacqueline Pelham (who I’ll call Nana), an author who now resides in The Woodlands, had this old-school typewriter at her older home in Houston. When I would go over there for sleepovers, I remember thinking the typewriter was so cool, and I would make up my own stories – some of which I know Nana and my mom still have, even though they were remakes of Spongebob or something weird like that. Since then, my grandmother is now a published author. Aside from writing short stories and poetry in many literary journals, including Writers Market, newspapers and newsletters, she has published an award-winning novel, “Under the Rose,” and just finished her newest novel, “A Promise to Die For.” After recently reading “A Promise to Die For,” I am even more proud to call her my Nana. As I said earlier, I’ve always loved to write, but I didn’t know I wanted to pursue it. In high school we lived with Nana while our house was being built, and she helped edit all of my college essays, and my oh so difficult Dual Credit English final paper. Needless to say, with her help, I always did well on those papers, however, when I was accepted into Baylor University I picked a completely opposite route – Biology with a Pre-Dental track, yikes. Through my Baylor endeavors, I finally changed my major to Journalism in my junior year, with a focus in Public Relations. I talked to my mom and Nana before I made this change, and they both urged me to go for it. Nana was, of course, excited and supportive, because she always supported my writing. Now, I intern with a national college newspaper, The Odyssey Online, and I’m working with Woodlands Online this summer, and guess who shares AND prints every article I write? Nana. Her feedback on all of my published (and non-published) pieces is so helpful and so important to me. Honestly, I just get excited for her to read all of my stuff, because I know she gets it. Now my family lives across the street from her, and when we get together, we always get to talk about my journalism, her books, and more, and that’s super special. Although I want to go into the public field of journalism, reading her novel, “A Promise to Die For,” has really sparked some book-writing interest to me, so we’ll see what happens in the future!
