There is everything from the best of the new apple products to some long awaited video games. No matter which way you go they are all great gifts that people would love to have. This year has been a year of true innovation. Dozens of new companies have came out with some new gadgets that would be excellent gifts to give someone for Christmas. Some of these great gifts might consist of some of the the great tablets out on the market. You have your choice of the new and improved apple iPad Mini. Its lighter and a lot easier to carry around than the regular iPad with its new 7.9 inch screen. There is also the Kindle fire HD with its 9 inch screen and much better picture. There are also some other cool tablets out there, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab two and the Motorola Zoom android tablet, which were both given high reviews, critics and users alike. Junior Mason Baumann ‘14 said, “I would take the new ipad over those other ones any day. Apple is just better.” This year The Inkwell has done a poll to see what students want for Christmas. The categories for the poll taken were phone/tablet/computer, games system related, clothes, sporting goods, event tickets and car/bike. These polls were picked because they seemed to be the most popular in years past. This poll was taken on the Facebook on the Boys’ Latin Student Body page. The most popular on the list was cars by far because many teenagers need a new car. Craig Dougherty said “ I want a car because I want to go places when I want not when my mom wants to take me.” Although most high school students want cars for Christmas, as expected, some kids took the less expensive route and went with different items. Walker Ensor said,“I need a new phone because mine does not provide Internet and apps like the iPhone and Droids.” A couple kids prefer spending some quality time with friends or family at concerts or sports games. Colin Porter said “ I want to go see Maroon 5 at the Verizon Center on April 3rd.” A couple of students could use some new clothes or shoes for Christmas instead of the more expensive items. It’s all too common to hear

students, faculty and administrators

alike asking one question in

particular, “Where should I go to eat

today?” People based their

decisions off of everything from

price, quality of food, and type of

food. Who knows the Lake Avenue

area better than us Lakers?

Teachers and administrators have

the lunch block to go off campus and

chow down wherever their hearts

desire. However, the students

usually have the window between

3:15 and 6:15 to find a bite around

the area. Some students even have

their own routine down when it

comes to finding food. Aaron Leeds

‘13 chooses to go to Pepe’s every

single morning to get a ham, egg and

cheese bagel sandwich. He prefers

to wash down his favorite Pepe’s

dish with a cold chocolate milk. You

can catch him in the halls every

morning,chowing down before his

first period class. If you ever see a

balled up sheet of wax paper

accompanied with an empty milk

container, you most certainly are on

the trail of Pepe’s most beloved

breakfast customer, Aaron Leeds.

As it turns out, many juniors are

into the Mexican style of dining.

Andrew Woerner 14’ is a huge

Qdoba fan! “It’s always cheap on

Wednesdays with the student

discount. I like to get a steak queso

burrito when I go to Qdoba. I

always get everything on it and pay

a fair price.” The Qdoba vs. Chipotle

debate can sometimes be a heated

one, but Kevin Wolf ‘13 and James

Weisman ‘13 hold a mature

conversation, weighing the positive

aspects of each establishment. When

asked which one is better, James

said, “Qdoba, maaan. You just can’t

beat their sauces, maaan.” Kevin

Good Eats Around The Lakeover on York

Road. Panera is

renowned for

their bread,

however they

also have a full

menu that

contains a broad

spectrum of foods

for any meal of

the day. Mrs.

Trupia, upper

school secretary,

chose Panera as

her favorite place

to eat around BL.

She said, “ It’s

just ‘cause the

variety. You

know you can get

a bagel anytime

you want, or for

breakfast you can

get a coffee. It’s a

‘ o n e - s t o p -

shop.’” Panera is

a convenient

place for many to

eat at any time of

the day, especially for a group of

people, because of their variety of

delicious meals, and of course their

scrumptious bakery pleases people

as well.

The Washington Tavern

unfortunately burned down last year

and has been closed since. On

November 6, the Tavern reopened

for business. In talking to Mr.

Mitchell, he mentioned he missed

going over to eat at The Tavern and

that he has high hopes for when it

opens back up, “The Mt.

Washington Tavern’s been closed

for a year and it’s finally opening

back up next week, so I think that’s

gonna be a ‘go-to’ once they open

up.” The Tavern is now up and

running again, buzzing with

business the way everyone is used

to seeing. However, in the

meantime Mr. Mitchell plans on

eating at his two other top favorites,

Vito’s and Alonso’s.

Talk about a world of opportunity

when it comes to dining around

Lake Avenue. Whether you’re

looking for some quick carry out,

some authentic Italian or Mexican

cuisine, odds are you will find what

you’re looking for around Boys’

Latin. Whether you’re just going

down the hill to Pepe’s or traveling

to one of the many popular eateries

on York Road, you’re sure to find

something that will satisfy those

taste buds!

responds, “ Nah, dude. You gotta

roll with the quality ingredients -

Chipotle no doubt.” Will there ever

be an end to this debate?

something to munch on is Panera

The Ravens are currently 9-4 and

are sitting atop the AFC North and

have the second best record in the

AFC. There are many reasons for

why the Ravens are so successful

this year. Joe Flacco has become

dominant at home and seems to carry

the team to victory. Ray Rice as

always seems to be the biggest

playmaker on the team and can

definitely be credited for some of the

Ravens’ wins this year. But students

all have their own opinions as to who

is their favorite player other than just

the big names, and here’s why.

Senior Bryan Lichtenauer said,

“My favorite player right now’s got

to be Justin Tucker. The kid’s more

than just a kicker, he’s a football

player. Plus he’s already kicked two

game winners this year.”

Another specials teams pick was

thrown in when Junior Glen Becker

was asked who his favorite Raven is.

“I’d have to say Brendan

Ayenbadejo” Glen said. “I like his

hustle on special teams, and I’m

friends with him on Facebook so I

get to see all the meals he eats. I

aspire to be like him someday.”

Sophomore Garrett Stoler named a

common favorite in, “Anquan ‘So

Strong’ Boldin. He’s got the

strongest hands on the team by far.

And he can lay some boys out.”

Fellow Sophomore Joe Santangelo

responded with another receiver,

however for a different reason.

“Definitely Jacoby Jones” Joe

answered. “He’s added such a

dynamic aspect to the return game.

He can run like a deer.”

WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE RAVEN? All of these responses are of

somewhat unsung heroes on the

Ravens this year and most of them

aren’t players whose jersey would

be worn by fans on game day. But

Senior RJ Kaminski may have made

the boldest, most outlandish pick of

all.

“My favorite has got to be Billy

Bajema. He wears Heap’s old

number but man that guy can warm

the bench like no other. But when

he gets in he sure does everything in

his power to make the coaches

notice him. He either gets called for

a penalty or is beat on the play by

the guy he’s blocking. But he’s got

the heart of a lion so I do appreciate

his effort.”

Obviously most of RJ’s comment

was sarcastic. Billy Bajema for

those who don’t know is the third

string tight end on the Ravens’ depth

chart. All of these Ravens are

contributors so far to this year’s

success. They are currently looking

to win the division crown for the

second year in a row and will

hopefully capture that elusive Super

Bowl this year.

Match-That-Muscle(Top left) :“Man, that kid is cut,”

said no one, ever.

Not much to look at here.

However, this starting right tackle

has the heart of a lion.

As he battled for playing time on

the offensive line, it seemed that the

coaches really found what they were

looking for. They found a try hard.

Hint: Commonly mistaken for

Bigfoot.

This ripped bicep belongs to one of

the most feared middle linebackers

in the MIAA.

You can find him sporting a cutoff

shirt walking around the gym like he owns the place.

It sure looks like he does.

Especially compared to teammate

Niko Trombetta.

Hint: In the summertime you can

catch him “going round and round

all day, bailing some hay.”

*********

This thick, meaty bicep belongs to

a Varsity football player who has

been a part of the team since

Sophomore year.

He is also a Varsity Laxer.

Hulaydidlay they call him. He

loves the Cincinnati Bengals even

though experts believe that it will

take them at least 50 years to win a

Super Bowl.

Hint: Chunk, The Goonies, Brad

Pitt, George Clooney.

*********

This hairy leg belongs to one of the

most consistent volleyball players,

second to Chad Greenberg. When

he’s not playing volleyball, he

enjoys shredding it with his boys

out on the ice. How else can you get

legs like that? Figure skating, duh.

Hint: “Man, this kid has some

“jacked” legs.

This mysterious flexer can be seen

running around Lake Avenue

training for race day.

He works hard on the wrestling

mat and doesn’t mind breaking a

mental sweat either. Talk about a

well rounded student.

Hint: “Wait this ripped kid runs

cross country?” Yes he most

certainly does...

*********

This defined calf can only belong to

an avid runner. If he is not teaching

English or reviewing Inkwell

articles, he can be seen running

from Baltimore to England without

stopping. Yes, it’s possible.

Hint: “Bloody Hell, look at those

calves!”

MostpopularNBA

TeamonCampus?

By Jamal Perkins ‘13

As most know, Baltimore does

not have a professional basketball

team. The closest team to

Baltimore, the Washington

Wizards, is the worst team in the

NBA, so a lot of people in

Baltimore refuse to cheer for them.

However, among BL students,

there are three teams that are very

popular, and we decided to find out

why..

In the NBA, teams are loaded

with superstars. The most popular

of these teams are the Miami Heat,

the Los Angeles Lakers, and the

Oklahoma City Thunder. These

teams might be three of the most

talented teams ever to be

assembled. The Lakers, who have

two first ballot hall of famers along

with two other possible hall of

famers in their starting lineup,

have been talked about being the

best team in the western

conference. This team is led by

Kobe Bryant, one of the most

successful players ever to play the

game. Senior Dj Willoughby said,

“Kobe is one of the most skilled

players in the game right now.”

After winning the NBA

championship last year, the Heat

have come out hot and have added

some new dangerous weapons to

its already dominant team. The

Heat are lead by 2012 finals MVP

Lebron James and the 2006 finals

MVP Dwyane Wade. Their fire

power often pulls them ahead of

most in the argument of the best

team in the league. After the BL

basketball team’s win in their season

opener against Cristo Rey with a

score of 78 to 30, senior Stephen

Black said, “The team this year

looks like the Heat out there when

they run the floor.”

When the student body was

asked about their favorite team,

mixed opinions were given. Some

based their decisions on their

favorite player instead of the team,

and others just liked the colors of the

teams.

Sophomore Jerell Archer said,

“I have always been a Kobe fan, it

is that simple.” Some felt sorry for

Lebron and all the criticism he

receives for not being clutch, and

not living up to his full potential.

Junior Danny Shaifer said, “I

chose the Heat because I felt bad for

how much everyone constantly

badgered him about him not

winning a championship until this

year.” A few students even voted

for the

The Oklahoma City Thunder,

led by two time scoring champion

Kevin Durant and dynamic point

guard Russell Westbrook.

It was a close race here at BL

but the Heat out lasted the Lakers by

two votes with a final tally of 34 to

32, with the Thunder bringing in a

lonely 8. The Miami Heat continue

their already successful year as they

win the crown of the most popular

NBA team on campus.Answers: Top left: Niko Trombetta, 2nd from top: Walker Ensor, 3rd

Defending the Hockey Title,

continued from front page

to the side and said, ‘Let’s get it

done.’ And we did.”

That’s just what the Laker hockey

team did last season. They all

seemed to mesh well together and

as a result, they knocked out the St.

Paul’s Crusaders.

When Corey spoke about this

season, he explained, “We’ve got all

the skills and personnel that we need

for a championship repeat this year.

It’s really up to us to make the

decision for how we want this season

to go.”

After the second practice of the

season, Mr. Maisel was thrilled

about the early progress that the

squad is already making.

He said, “We’re working on

breakouts already and talking about

things that weren’t practiced until

the later parts of last season. At this

rate, we’re looking great. We’ve

never seen this type of progress this

early in the season.”

With the title to defend, the

hockey squad is prepared to

determine the fate of their season.

The team knows they need to

work hard to stay on top of the

competition and follow up last

year’s performance.

When they share their thoughts

on this year’s season, they all hold

a strong sense of confidence that

they can finish with another title.

They feel that they have the players

and coaching staff in place, and the

team can capitalize on last year’s

success.

When asked about a repeat

championship season, Bryan simply

smiled and said, “We’re gonna go

back to back. I can feel it.”

There is a big buzz around BL

about the new Mascot. Larry is the

new Boys’ Latin mascot. He dresses

in a short sleeve button down flannel,

khakis, a blue cap, and of course

rocks a beard and mustache

combination. “Yeah Larry’s cap is

cool and all, but the slippers he rocks

are for real. I get dizzy just looking

at them,” says sophomore Jared

Snyder. Larry is the newest way to

bring excitement into the Boys’ Latin

community.

Larry is an investment made by

the Spirit club to attract more fans to

the games. Even when the game isn’t

going well Larry will be there raising

spirits and bringing the pack together

to cheer on the teams. “One day I was

just cheering on Volleyball when out

of nowhere I see a big Lumberjack

with a drum pumping up the crowd,”

says Devin Shewell ‘15. Larry has

attracted more fans to create more

energy for the games.

Larry appears out of the blue to

get the hype going. “Over the past

months I have gotten to love Larry

and I always get excited when I see

him at the games. I feel like I’ve

become a part of Larry,” Junior Tally

Bruno. The true identity of Larry is

unknown because he is only seen

when wearing his costume. Larry is

a true motivator and is here to help

Boys Latin through the Long run.

Last week, Larry sent a text to

Colin Heacock saying, “I’ll see you

this afternoon we are bringing the

hammer down!” Colin says, “Larry

has always been there for me this year

I look forward to the sports games to

see him leading the pack. I wish I

could be Larry one day.” Larry is a

true role model because of his

leadership and courage to lead the

Lakers in the cheers against opposing

foes.

The recent addition of Larry has

brought a new feeling to the Boys

Latin community. “Before Larry I

didn’t even want to go to any

extracurricular events at Boys’ Latin

and now when I see him I get a

feeling I’ve never felt before,” says

Junior Griff Volker. Larry is an

unknown mastermind wandering

Boys’ Latin. Students have thoughts

of who Larry could be, but still there

is no true answer of who is behind

Larry’s mask. Before Larry the

school spirit was lacking and now the

energy and sensation are back

because of our new mascot Larry.

Larry has helped the crowd cheer on

the volleyball team to the

championship, helped cheer the

soccer team into the playoffs, and

helped cheer the football team

throughout their successful season.

Larry expects to lead the student

section for years to come.

Lakers’ New Mascot For years now the Boys’ Latin

St. Paul's rivalry has been heating

up over anything in the school’s

community. Whether it comes to

sports, school work, or charity

work, it is always a competition

between these two schools. Jimmy

Parker says, “Yeah we played them

really close in the Volleyball

championship game but we will get

them back next year. I guarantee it.”

Boys’ Latin and St. Paul’s have one

of the biggest rivalries in Maryland

and everyone loves to talk about it.

BL and St. Paul’s both have

sports teams that often pass

expectation. The games can go

either way and you can never make

predictions as both teams are very

competitive. Parker Yablon ‘14

says, “The rivalry has been very

long lasting. Ever since I have been

at BL, which was in kindergarten,

the rivalry has been pretty heated.

Although we are friends with

some of the kids at St. Paul's, it still

gets really intense when game time

rolls around. It can become

somewhat aggressive and usually is

close scoring.” Parker lead BL to a

2-1 victory over St. Paul's in the

Semifinals of soccer this year on

November 8th. BL Soccer team

later went on to win the

championship against Severn on

November 11 with a score of 3-1.

Last year Boys’ Latin also defeated

St. Paul's in the hockey

Championship 3-2.

The students aren't the only

ones excited about this rivalry. The

faculty and parents get just as

excited when a St. Paul's game rolls

around. Mr Mitchell says, “I think

it’s a great rivalry. I feel like every sport is competitive and you never know who is going to win because the rivalry is so strong and energetic.” BL and St. Paul's always have tough games throughout the year.

BL and St. Paul's don’t only have a rivalry in sports though. Last year Boys’ Latin and St. Paul's had a food drive competition to help the needy by collecting canned food. Senior Ben Pridemore says, “It’s pretty dope. The games get really heated. I know from personal experience in sports, that at the varsity level there is always lots of trash talking. I especially remember last year when we smashed them in the canned food drive.” BL raised

What Do You Mean Rivalry?

more than 2 times the amount of

canned food than St. Paul's.

The BL St. Paul's rivalry is like

a game between two best friends on

opposite teams. Boys’ Latin and St.

Paul's are good friends, right up until

game day when they suddenly

become enemies. Jake Walsh says,

“Yeah I’m real good friends with

Patrick ‘Budda’ Buttarazzi and

Illyas. When we get onto the field

though I act as if I don’t know who

they are.” The community hopes for

the best for the rival school but also

hopes they defeat them when it

comes to competition. This rivalry

has built a strong foundation between

these two schools and it keeps getting

stronger.

The Five Worst Songs of 2012 Radio stations across the US have

been playing some songs that make

Cyrus and Chief sick. Some of these

songs are catchy the first time they

hit the listener’s ears, but soon they

are overplayed and the song just gets

old and boring.

After extensive interviews with

BL music industry experts T. Moyer

‘14, Anthony Wyler ‘15. Cole

Whitehurst ‘15, Colin Heacock ‘13,

and J.T. Lauman ‘15, here are the the

five worst songs of 2012 based.

********

Coming in at number 5 as one of

the worst songs of 2012 is Gangnam

Style by PSY. Gangnam Style is one

of the worst songs because wherever

you go the song is being played and

people do the stupid dance along

with it. Colin Heacock ‘13 says, “The

video is cool and the song is catchy.

I often jam out to this song while

driving home by myself. LOL. I still

remember when Nikki Hudson ‘13

showed me this song. I instantly fell

in love with her and the song but I

have heard it

way too

m u c h

lately.” Sure

the song is

catchy but

the dance

has ruined

humanity for

a while.

*********

Carly Rae

Jepsen is on

the list at

number 4

with her

new single

Call Me

M a y b e .

Call Me

M a y b e

makes me angry. I mean they just

met! “Hey I just met you, and this

is crazy, but here’s my number, so

call me maybe?” Hold on. That’s just

going a little to fast. JT Lauman ‘14

proclaims, “I wouldn’t even compare

this to a gem me and my YAZ

brothers listen to. If you want a good

song hit up, Budda.” The lyrics just

sound too cheesy to be thought of as

a top 10 song.

*********

As Long As You Love Me by

Justin Bieber comes in at number 3

on the list. “As long as you love me

we could be starving, we could be

homeless, we could be broke.” No

offence, Justin, but I don’t think a

person would give up their life to be

homeless, broke, or starving Justin.

Selena Gomez recently broke up with

Justin, so he is not getting any love.

Tyler Moyer ‘14 says, “This song

is just annoying and his voice is

almost as high as Colin Dempsey’s

‘14. Although the song is pretty

annoying, he has great hair and his

voice is magical and I will love him

forever. I’m his number one Belieber!

I actually recently asked a friend to

buy me tickets for Christmas.” This

song doesn’t make sense because he

is already famous and this song has

made sure he definitely won't be

broke, homeless or starving.

*********

Maroon Five finds a spot at number

two with Payphone. Talk about a

tough breakup, but let’s be real, no

one uses a payphone anymore. When

asked about Payphone Anthony

Wyler ‘15 says, “Uhh what’s a

Payphone?” Classic Anthony, thanks

for proving the point of how

Payphone was a waste of time in

Maroon Fives’ career. There really is

no point of being at a payphone after

ending a relationship. Who would

spend 50 cents to make a call now?

There are things called Cell Phones.

BL HOOPS IS BACK!!!By Jamal Perkins

As most students know

basketball has not been one of Boys’

Latin most prestigious and most

successful sports. As matter of fact,

throughout Boys’ Latin recent

sports history it has been one of

the least successful sports, But

thanks to one man that is on the

verge of a change. Head coach,

Cliff Rees, is on a mission to turn

this program around.

This year, BL basketball has

some high hopes and by high

hopes they mean a championship.

This year team Is stacked with

talent. We have two all

Conference players returning,

Colin Heacock and Casey Rees,

along with some promising

sophomores, Blair Brooks and

Devin Shewell. They are

accompanied by seniors Brenden

Fields, Jamal Perkins, DJ

Willoughby, Christian Knight, and

juniors Jordan Brooks and Fredrick

Bopst. With all this talent the team

has this year, they hope to get over

that hump that has haunted us since

this year’s senior class has entered

the high school. The varsity

basketball has not beaten either St.

Pauls or Gilman in any game in the

past four years. Beating these teams

would be one crucial step toward

the ultimate goal the team has set

out for. It's about

time that basketball is the sport

everyone is talking about on campus

instead of lacrosse all year round.

Senior Stephen black said "I

actually think the team has the

talent and coaching to go all the

way without a doubt." Another

senior Jacob Katinsky said, "I'm

coming to all the game

hoping to see some

DUNKS." Head coach

Cliff Rees says, “We

have the talent to have

a special season. We

just have to put it all

together.” Whether it’s

Colin throwing down a

dunk or Dj knocking

down a three pointer,

there is a lot of offense

to be seen on the

basketball team this

year. This became

evident after a 70 to 30

win over Cristo Rey in

the season open or as

senior Schazz lee called it, “A old

school beat down.” With such a

promising season upon us, let’s

hope the team can deliver that long

desired championship that has

eluded that banner hanging in the

Gelston Athletic center for so long.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONSBy Colin Porter ‘13

On Sunday November 11th,

at Stevenson University, the

varsity soccer team played Severn

in the 2012 MIAA B Conference

Championship Game. The road to

the championship was not an easy

one though. From the first playoff

game, the team had something to

prove. The quarterfinal playoff

game was

against Park,

who previously

beat Boys’

Latin in the

Quarterfinals

last year. With

a 5 to 3 win

over Park, the

team traveled

to St. Pauls for

a very tough

s e m i f i n a l

game. After losing to St. Pauls

twice in the regular season, the

soccer team went into the game as

the underdogs. Senior Maxx

Lowenstein scored both goals

against St. Paul’s, carrying the

team’s offense into the

championship game. Senior Jacob

Katinsky said, “When we got

through St. Paul’s, we really

started to believe and we got there

and finished.” Junior Brian

Becker scored the first goal for the

Lakers at the 23rd minute mark, off

a free kick taken by senior Aaron

Leeds. The goal was picture perfect.

The ball skidded off a Severn

defender’s head and right over the

keeper’s hands to Brian’s head and

then the goal. It was a great relief for

the whole team to score the first goal

because they saw the most success

when scoring the first goal. After the

game Brian said, “I’m just really

happy. That’s all I can explain. I just

can’t stop smiling.” With around

9 minutes left in the first half Maxx

scored the second goal by just being

in the right spot at the right time.

However, Severn responded by

scoring off a disputed call resulting

in a free kick right outside the

eighteen. With 33 seconds in the first

half Severn scored. After the game,

Around Halloween every

year, Mrs. Rodriguez, head of the

science department, has her annual

trebuchet project. She said, “This

is my favorite design project to

give to my students. It gives them

an opportunity to experience a

bit of mechanical engineering

while applying what they’ve

learned about projectile motion.

Also, it is just plain fun!”

According to The Middle Ages

Website, “The word 'Trebuchet'

is derived from the Old French

word 'Trebucher' meaning to

throw over.” All the students

who take her physics classes

from regular to AP create their

own trebuchet. Some students

become heartbroken when

theirs brake, and some enjoy the

glory of launching theirs a

hundred yards every time.

Students get into groups of two

or three and put their

engineering power to work.

Alex Hughes said, “I liked the

project because it was a hands

on and interactive learning

experience.” The trebuchets are

graded by how far they shoot out

on the lower turf by launching a

golf ball from its sling. The farther

a student shoots, the better their

grade. The only requirements

for this project are it must be under

fifteen pounds and not built from

a kit. Most students choose to

build their trebuchet from a

lightweight wood or pvc piping.

Any material is allowed to be used

though. For power some students

choose to use free weights or Alex

Hughes’ material of choice,

surgical tubing. Surgical tubing is

a stretchy elastic tubing that is

powerful when tension is added to

it. The project was

assigned in late September/early

October so enough times is given

to complete the project. First the

students use their time to plan a

design which doesn’t take very

long, and then a week or two to

build the actual trebuchet. It is not

as easy as everyone seems to

think.

This year for the AP Physics

class seniors Alex Hughes, Bradley

Schwartz, and Colin Porter

dominated the class. In the honor’s

class senior Taylor Davis and

juniors Evan Robinson

and Dylan Watts won

in their respective class.

In regular Physics

senior Devin Foudos

and juniors Christian

Mitchell and Cameron

Adams were the

winners.

One junior,

Hunter Moreland was a

little more than

heartbroken when his

trebuchet came back

and hit him in the nose

while he was

launching. A week later

he was back out on the

soccer field playing

though. M r s .

Rodriguez’s trebuchet

project is a fun way to

apply what we are

learning. These large

hands on projects allow

the students to build

their trebuchets at

home and are a fun

way to compete with

our classmates in a new and

interesting way. Devin Foudos said,

“It was a pretty awesome project, I

had a lot of fun building and

launching it.”

The soccer team Holding Their Championship Plaque by Mr. Thomas

Junior Hunter “Cotsy” Cotsaradis by

Mrs. Rodriguez

Maxx was ecstatic about the

championship, saying, “The

feeling of scoring that goal and

winning the Championship, it's the

best feeling in the world.” Severn

came out strong in the second half

but couldn’t make anything

happen. Senior Jacob Katinsky put

the game away by scoring the final

goal with about 5 minutes left in

the game. This

allowed the team to

calm down and play

smart soccer for the

last five minutes to

clinch the

championship. Being

a experienced soccer

player, Jacob knew

the final goal was a

big one and said, “I

wanted to get one

more goal to calm

the game down because their

whole team was pressing.”

With five seconds left in

the game, the ball was kicked out

and all the players started running

to the student section. Junior

goalie, Parker Yablon, started

running as Severn attempted to

throw the ball in and continue

playing. Ripping his gloves off,

Parker didn’t care the game was

won.

costumes. The most creative

costume was given to Tyler

Steinberg for his great replacement

referee costume. Lastly, the scariest

went to the 80’s workout group of

Jake Sachse, Ben Levin, and Chad

Greenberg, who wore very high

shorts and tight shirts, and it also

went to Parker Hawkins for his

scary skeleton costume. But these

costume contests weren’t the only contests on Halloween.

The fastest apple bob went to

Bowen Adams beating Maxx

Lowenstein by a fraction of a

second. The senior volleyball game

went to the white team by a score of eleven to five. Perhaps the most

entertaining of the events, chubby

bunny, was won by Tom Brown.

Chubby Bunny is a game where the

participants try to fit as many

marshmallows in their mouth while

still being able to say “chubby

bunny”.

Face painting and pumpkin

carving were split between the

maroon and white teams. Both dizzy bat, a game where contestants

spin ten times around a bat and have

to run down the basketball court and

back, and the costume basketball

relay, game where students have to

put on a costume and then run down to the opposite end of the court and

make a basketball shot, were won

by the white team. After all was

said and done, the white team came

out on top with a pretty easy victory

over the maroon team.

On Wednesday, October 31st,

Boys’ Latin upper school students

and teachers came together in the upper school gym to celebrate

Halloween by participating in

chubby bunny, senior volleyball,

face painting, pumpkin carving,

dizzy bat, basketball costume relay,

and apple bobbing.

There were a plethora of great

costumes from replacement referees

to Waldo to Jackie Moon, (the main

character of the movie Semi-Pro.)

There were also many great group

costumes, which included senior

ghosts, where all the seniors dressed

as ghosts, the 80’s workout group,

and the Duck Dynasty, the three

main characters of the new hit show

Duck Dynasty. Even the teachers had some great costumes. One of

the funnier ones was Mr. Osborn

dressing up as RJ Kaminski, a

Boys’ Latin senior. Although all

the costumes were great, some

definitely stood out from the rest.

Among some of the awards

given out during the assembly were

best group, most creative, and

scariest. The best group was won

TheFutureofBoys’LatinLacrosseSeniors The act of verbalizing a

commitment means a student gives

a college coach his word that he will

play for him during college.

Commitments normally happen

during junior year but can occur as

early as sophomore or freshman

year or as late as senior year..

The Class of 2013 has eighteen

lacrosse commitments to Division

1, Division 2 and Division 3

colleges. This does not include the

many in the 2014 and 2015 classes.

These students will be trying their

hardest to compete at the college

level over the next 4 years.

There are many factors that go

into choosing a college because

everyone needs to find the perfect

place to spend the next four plus

years. Many factors that these

students take into account when

choosing a college include academic

and athletic prowess, atmosphere,

and of course expenses. Also among

these factors is location. Many of

the commits chose to stay close to

home. Casey Rees will be attending

the Naval Academy next fall. There

are also other reasons why Casey

will be going to the Naval Academy.

His older brother, Matt ‘12, is

currently attending the Naval

Academy, and their father played

basketball at the Naval Academy as

well. “I really liked the coaches.

I’m getting paid to go there, and I

have a job right out of college,” said

Casey Rees. Kolby Caplin and

Michael Lynch are staying very

close to home and will be attending

Towson University. Also, Mac

“The Knife” Pons will be attending

the University of Maryland next fall.

Taylor Davis is staying fairly close

to home by attending Washington

College on the eastern shore.

Stevenson University is very proud

to be receiving the talents of John

Reinitz during the 2014 season.

Chris Rubino won’t be going too far

from home either as he will be

attending Gettysburg College next

year.

Some of the other commits feel

like they want to get away from the

area they have been living in for the

first eighteen years of their lives and

head to warmer climates down

south. Tom Brown will be going to

the Virginia Military Institute next

year. Some students are going way

south including Walker Ensor, who

will be attending Mercer University

in Macon, Georgia. Also, Ben

Levin will be heading down to

Greenville, South Carolina to

Furman University. Chad

Greenberg will be heading farthest

from home and will be attending the

University of Tampa.

Although many kids are

heading south, even more kids will

be taking their talents north for

college. Andrew Roswell will be

going to the University of

Michigan. When asked about why

he chose Michigan, Andrew said,

“I chose Michigan because of big

time football and a great

atmosphere and coaches.” Ben

Pridemore will be going to the

University of Notre Dame in

Indiana, and Bryan Lichtenauer will

be going to Ohio State University.

Jake Walsh recently committed to

Bates College in Lewiston-Auburn,

Maine. When asked about Bates

College, Jake said, “I had a great

time on my visit there, and it seems

to give me a great academic

opportunity.” This seems to be a

great fit for Jake. Another recent

commit was Greg Sheetz, who will

be attending Hobart College. Last

but certainly not least, Christian

Knight will be going to Cornell

University in 2013.

With all these star players the

varsity lacrosse team is hoping to

bring the MIAA “A” Conference

lacrosse championship back to Lake

Avenue. Keep an eye out for the

seniors in the lacrosse world of 2013

and beyond. It will certainly be very

interesting to watch these Lakers

play in the future beyond Lake

Avenue. They would all appreciate

some type of support in college.

Along with all of these seniors

on the lacrosse team that have

committed for lacrosse, there are

many more sophomores and juniors

that plan on playing lacrosse at their

respective colleges. With all of

these great players, 2013 should be

a very exciting season.

Some people went with new

video games that have been released

recently. Among the most popular

is Call of Duty Black Ops II. COD

is always a popular game among

most video game players along with

the long awaited Halo 4.

Senior Casey Alderman said,

“This is the best Halo yet, hands

down. I just couldn’t stop playing it

once I got started.”

Whether its a 500 dollar tablet or

a 60 dollar video game there are

some great gifts out there for you to

go buy for that special person for

Christmas this year.

There a plenty of options to

choose from so it will be very

Gobbles could not only be seen

However

Gobbles’ luck may

Recently, Maryland

Gobbles either was

swept away in the

“I’m going to miss Gobbles.”

Senior David Santangelo said. “The

It’s true, not having the extra 10

minutes of traffic every morning is

nice, but Gobbles will surely be

missed by everyone. Wherever you

are Gobbles, we love you.

Five Worst Songs of 2012,

Continued from page 4

*********

At the top of our list taking the

number one spot is Boyfriend by

Justin Bieber. Seriously though this

song is horrible and the fact that he

tries to rap in the song makes it

even worse. “If I was your

boyfriend, never let you go Keep

you on my arm girl, you'd never be

alone. I can be a gentleman,

anything you want. If I was your

boyfriend, I'd never let you go.”

Justin is a little obsessive with

these lyrics and he needs to

understand personal space.

Cole Whitehurst ‘15 says,

“Yeah I know T loves Bieber and

all but I’m sorry Boyfriend is

almost as bad as Friday by Rebecca

Black, another one of T’s favorite

songs. I really don’t know how this

song gets played on the radio.”

Most Lakers tend to agree with

Cole on that.

So there it is the five worst

songs of 2012 in order. Sorry to

any fellow Lakers who like these

songs but they are just horrendous.

This is Cyrus and Chief and we

approve this message.

Tag Team’s TakeVol. 100, No. 2, Page 8 The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland December 2012

“LAX”:The Next Generation Lacrosse is undoubtedly the

core of Baltimore Life. When it isn’t

lacrosse season - much to football

Coach Jim Sandusky’s (not related)

protests - for many, it is still lacrosse

season. He can often be heard on the

football field saying,“I can’t stand

them lax jumping jacks, they are too

chill. It’s football season. Time to be

a man.” Right now the lacrosse scene is

run by a solid group of Baltimore

players who understand the tradition

of the game and do not attempt to

become “The Ultimate Lax Bro”.

However there is a next generation.

Young players no longer

imitate classic stars such as Mikey

Powell (Syracuse),Ryan Boyle(

Princeton) and Ben Rubeor

(Virginia) but rather more modern

\ pro players like Con Bro Chill,

Paul Rabil and a host of other self

described “bros” who are way too

frat to care. The Tag Team has

posed the question: what has

happened to the lacrosse

community? What has happened to

the just go out and play mentality

that has been replaced by flow,

adrenaline socks and colored mesh?

Is lacrosse evolving away from a

hard nosed game to a matter of

appearance?

“I think so,” said Walker

“Urlacher” Ensor. “It is a shame to

see the game and culture change so

drastically in my lifetime.” The Tag

Team has taken a similar view. We

are wondering where this change

has come from. We cite many

reasons for the the change from

playing hardnose to worrying more about how good your hair looks and

how “swagged out” you are AKA

your overall appearance. Some will

point to youtube sensation

Brantford Winstonworth, the self-

named “ultimate lax-bro”. Words like these just give the sport a bad

name. “Yeah the whole Ultimate

Lax Bro thing really brought down

the culture. Even though it was

pretty funny,” said senior goalie

Christian Knight.

Ask the Tag TeamRiggins 33: Hey dudes, I just want

to start off by saying thank you so

much for the response on my last

question. It has made a big impact

on my relationship with this girl and

I figured I would follow up with

another question since you guys

seem to be the Dr. Phil of the upper

school. Well here it is, recently I

went to my girlfriend’s soccer game

when she didn’t want me to for some

odd reason. Even though I refused

to go, my friends convinced me it

would not be a big deal and she

would appreciate it in the end.

Sadly, it did not turn out that way and now she is really angry my

dudes ,and I need advice on how to

fix this situation. Did I really do

something that bad?

Tag Team: You did absolutely

nothing wrong my friend. One thing

you need to understand about

women is that you simply will never

understand women. The Tag Team

can not even explain why she

doesn’t want you there. Of course

you would assume it was a nice

gesture to come. Also you aren’t to

blame for your friends dragging you

out there. What does she expect

from you man? To sit by yourself

all day. She will come around.

Bonecrusher: Tag Team your

advice didn’t help my situation one

bit even though I appreciate your

efforts to resolve my issues.

Derrick McPherson,former NFL

player and ladies man, tells me you

guys have had a 72% success rate

and can solve my issues in four

weeks. Therefore I figured I would

come back and give you guys a

second chance. So here is the issue.

This girl called me recently

screaming in the phone about some

stuff that I don’t want to disclose. I

didn’t even care about nor want to

deal with at the moment. I just

hung up on her and now she has

been blowing up my phone every

day of the

week for the

past two

months now.

I need some

a d v i c e .

Should I keep

ignoring her

or should I

confront her?

Tag Team:

We apologize

that we

couldn’t help

you out for

your last

q u e s t i o n . We usually

don’t field

questions involving older women.

But my man, you’ve got to address

this situation. Gandolf will not rise

from the depths of Mordor to make

this situation go away. You need to

be quick and firm with this girl.

Also try to be nice, you don’t want

Another source of the horrid

all pink attire.

“Don’t get me wrong Rabil is a

great player, however he just tries to

be way too cool,” said Kolby Caplin

another senior goalie. There is no

denying the ability of Rabil, a

perennial all-star, however he must

understand that this is not the NFL.

This is a tight knit group and no one

really wants to buy your clothing line. Rabil is undoubtedly one of the

best talents to ever play the game, he

just needs to make it more about his

accomplishments on the field and

less about his tight shirts and

appearance off the field.

Con Bro Chill. Now that guy.

This guy is on a whole new level.

We guess it’s pretty cool to be named Con Bro Chill and advertise

for a company called “Flow

Society”. When showed a picture of

Con Bro Chill ,senior Jamal Perkins

laughed saying, “That man right

there is weird. He actually plays a

sport?”

Con Bro Chill is far from chill.

Kevin Wolf the third senior goalie

to be interviewed said, “Yeah most

people tell me I’m a pretty chill and

relaxed guy, this guy is not a chill

guy.” Coming from one of the most

chill people

Everybody has a nickname. Some more classic and memorable than others. Some more discreet and subtle. Nicknames are what make unbreakable bonds and unforgettable memories. They have the power to shape a person for the better. However, nicknames can also be mean and hurtful at times. Luckily at BL, we are all brothers and we make nicknames for each other out of love. Let’s face it, it’s always much more fun to call someone by their nickname than call them by their actual, boring, real name. We have composed an exquisite study of the most dandy nicknames throughout the BL community. What you are about to read is both compelling and rich. *Important: Nicknames can also be hurtful. Make sure the person is okay with a nickname before you start using it. While you may think it’s funny, others may not so BE CAREFUL.

Shirts- Colin Heacock“Pretty much I’m Tha Man and people respect me more when my shirt is off because I can flex my huge muscles with ease. It’s an intimidation factor. Catch me on the weekends, shirtless, ready to party.”

Brucie- Alex Schultz“Watch the Longest Yard homie. I am identical to the character Brucie, the guy who thinks he is good at every position in football.”

Cyrus- Casey Rees “It all started in Pridemore’s basement...I became friends with the cyclops, which is a one-eyed beast that lived down there in the dark. We really hit it off. So, everyone started calling me by the cyclops's real name, Cyrus.”

Leslie Chow- Mac Pons“Prom Night we all watched the classic movie The Hangover. Leslie Chow is one of the funniest characters in the movie, he is my main man. He truly inspires me to do what I do best, and by far I am the best. Jake Sachse has nothing on me.”

Randy- Colin Chell“Randy was given to me last lacrosse season, as there were too many Colins on the team so I was called by my dad’s name, Randy. No one rarely calls me by my real name anymore, I like it.”

Hulay- Tom Brown“It was a cold winters night at Cold Stone Creamery...just ask Laker alum Brandon Clark or look up his senior speech from last year. I am the HulayDidlay, a person of mystery and intelligence.”

VaughanHead- Chris Vaughan“Tom Brown started calling me that for whatever reason. Apparently I’m reallyyy into Dubstep. Womp Womp.”

The Beb- Jake Walsh“It started out as Beb because that’s what I call everyone. Instead of normally saying ‘Sup bro?’ I instead simply say ‘Beb’. It has now transformed into Babe for whatever reason.”

Brows- Michael Lynch“Brandon Cherry gave me this name freshman year during JV basketball season due to my scrumptious, luscious eyebrows. Love ‘em or hate ‘em baby.”

DJ Chod- Chad Greenberg“One night I was on my Mac with my Owings Mills boys and decided to throw some dub beats together, preferably Skrillex or Zed’s Dead mixed with Perpetual Groove. There ya have it.”

Suge Knight- Christian Knight“Coach Schell dubbed me this, not a surprise there. It’s based on the

producer Suge Knight, and the hit jam lyrics in ‘I Dont Like’ by Chief Keef, Kanye, and Big Sean. I think it’s kinda sweet.”

The Weathermen- Jake Sachse, Walsh, Heacock, Lynch, Dashiell, Dempsey, Knight“We have all had an interest with the weather at some point during our high school careers, but never has it been good enough to pursue.”

Beautiful- Niko Trombetta“I am beautiful. Everyone tells me that and started calling me by this so it just stuck. I can't blame them, I am pretty darn good looking. I may go into modeling or something.”

Howie/ Little Ming- Griff Volker“I got the name Howie from looking like the guy from BenchWarmers who eats the sunscreen, and Little Ming I received from seeing this big, shirtless man who taught me the ways of the weight room. I love you, Colin Heacock.”

Rabil- Tal Bruno“I am not surprised I have been given this nickname. Me and lax superstar Paul Rabil have the same playing styles. He rips net, I rip net. Plain and simple. I just can't shoot 111mph...yet.”

EVERYBODY HAS A NICKNAME

On November 9th, 2012, Boys’ Latin lost one of its greatest mentors, faculty members, and friends, Tyler Betz. Mr. Betz had a relationship with every single student in the high school. He knew everyone by name, a very hard task to accomplish each and every day. He specialized in helping students with their life problems and served as a true “guide” through the tough, rocky roads of high school life. As sad as it is to lose such a great man, Mr. Betz has to move on. The Boys’ Latin community will forever support him, and we will truly miss seeing his bright smile in the hallways every day. There is a hole that will never be truly and properly filled at Boys’ Latin. Mr. Betz was an amazing guidance counselor and an extremely fun teacher. His

main class, Psychology, has always been a student favorite. Tom Brown ‘13, a former student of this legendary class, says, “I’m going to miss my dad, he was like a father to me. He will always be left in my heart forever. He will be truly missed and there will always be a piece of him at Boys’ Latin. I will miss his face, but all I have to do is look in the mirror and know he is there with me.” Another former student, Michael Lynch, says, “Mr. Betz is and forever will be my hero. His class was the bomb. He was one of my favorite teachers by far.” As you can see, there is nothing but positive feedback when talking about Mr. Betz. He is a BL legend. Mr. Betz has now moved on to a new chapter of his life. He is starting his new business on the Eastern Shore. “I am moving to the Eastern Shore, where I will be

opening a place that takes in elderly people who need help,” says Betz. He has dedicated his life to helping others, first at BL, and now the elderly. He is a true inspiration. If only there were more like him in this world. When asked about his feelings of leaving BL, he replied, “Boys Latin is everything to me. I found my wife and have had a child throughout the course of teaching here. BL has become a part of me, and I could never repay this school for what it has provided me. I will miss each and every person that is a part of this fine place. I love you guys.” And we love you too, Mr. Betz. Thank you for everything you have given to this school, all the time and hard work that you have sacrificed, and most of all thank you for being able to put a smile on anyone’s face. Farewell, Mr. Betz, BL loves you and owes you so much.

Boys vs. Girls Going to an all-boys school, we always have that one recurring question circling through our heads. What would it be like to attend an all-girls school just for one day? What is it like? Are there any similarities, or is it just extremely diverse? This mystery has never been unveiled to our boyish minds, much less discovered, in the history of all mankind. However, on November 30th, 2012, everything changed. History was made. The truth was revealed. We made the dangerous quest to the one and only Garrison Forest, on behalf of all bros alike, to make the most important exposition the world has ever seen. Grizzlies...we put their name to the test. It was a brisk, cold winter morning as we pulled onto the Garrison campus. We were actually doing this. The amount of weird looks and stares we received as we got out of the car were countless. The absolute first thing that was noticed, before we even walked into the school doors, was the amount of yoga pants we saw. A plethora to say the least. It was a great start to the morning. We met the bright and cheery Dean of Students, Mrs. Jan Havlik, who set us up with our schedule and shadows. After a quick visit to the

senior room, the awkwardness of the visit wore off. We were like celebrities, the only two bright, extremely handsome, young males in a school entirely filled with girls. We were ready for our first class, Creative Writing. It instantly struck us how similar the class was to the

class of notorious legend Mr. Higginson. Donuts were passed around, which we most definitely partook in, and we sat back and observed. After a few free writing drills and class discussions, the period came to a close. One class down. Another fascinating thing we noticed was how perfect every single girls’ handwriting was. Let’s

One strappin it. Photo by: GFS

Chris Rubino and a young Pete Rose- Both Italian, have dark

hair, and the same facial features, these two are identical. Pete

Rose is a legendary baseball player. When asked about this look-a

Billy Wingo and controversial bad boy rapper DMX- Billy being

Michael Lynch and pop star Justin Bieber- Sporting the same

order to flirt with women.

Andrew Roswell and a young Paul McCartney- These two old Brits

look exactly alike. Roswell is quite the musician also. Paul

McCartney is of course a Beatle.

Colin Heacock and an Angry Bird- When Colin Ming Ming Heacock

gets upset he turns into one of these popular gaming characters.

They also both hurt really bad when they hit you. An Angry Bird is

a character in the popular Angry Bird smart phone game.

Niko Trombetta and a Manatee- They are both gentle and both love

the tropical climate (the Caymans). You can catch him floating

around aimlessly in the great ocean. A manatee is a rare sea mammal.

College. The thought of it

makes some excited and others

nervous. It is the time in life when

one finds out what its like to have

real freedom. Parent’s aren’t there

to wake you up and make them go

to class. They are not there when

you get home to make them do their

homework. As senior year continues

more and more seniors will be

figuring out where their next step in

life will take them. There is just one

problem. Thousands of universities

and colleges litter the world. Which

one to choose? It’s a tough decision,

one that will change your life forever. In order to make this

process easier for the seniors at

Boys’ Latin School, some research

has been done to match the type of

student with their perfect fit for

college.

Harvard. If you are the

studious of the studious and want to

freeze your rear end off, Ivy League

is the way to go. When you make

this choice prepare for all nighters

on top of all nighters. You will be

spending your next four years with

some of the brightest students in the

world. Good luck: you'll need it. I

believe the perfect fit for this type

of school is Josh Hamburger. Josh has displayed throughout his career

at Boys’ Latin that he is not only

very intelligent but also an

incredibly hard worker. When asked

about this perfect fit Josh responded,

“Harvard is nice and all but way too

cold for me.”

West Virginia. If you are the

polar opposite

of the type of

student who

wants to stay in

his room all

night, WVU is

the place for

y o u .

Morgantown is

a beautiful

town that takes

pride in its party first

environment.

This school is

perfect for a

student looking

to have the

time of their

life. I’ll say

that again, the

time of your

life. Tailgate

after tailgate, it may be hard to keep

up on those academics. But don’t get

me wrong WVU is a great state

university giving many options for

academic prowess. I believe the

perfect fit for this type of school is

James Weisman. He just always

seems to be the life of the party.

When asked about this fit James

responded, “That would be one

heck of a good time brotha.”

South Carolina. Go Cocks! If

you are looking to get a quality

education while living the classic

southern life, this is the place for

you. And trust me if you are a ladies

man you will not be disappointed;

nothing like black sun dresses on

game day, a prized historic South Carolina tradition. Colombia

embraces their prized universities.

The tailgates for football are some

of the best in the country.

Christopher Vaughan, this has your

name written all over it. Chris has

always been able to manage both the

academic and the social scene of

Boys’ Latin.

When asked

about this fit

C h r i s

“Dude thats like

my backup!”

University

of California at

Santa Barbara.

If you’re

looking to get out of the

homeland and

go on an

adventure to

one of the most

beautiful places

in the world.

Here is your

school. Beach,

b e a u t i f u l

women, and

books is all one has to worry about

if they attend UCSB. Did I already

mention the beach? Oh yeah I did

but I’ll say it again. You will be

going to school on the beach. UCSB

is actually on oceanfront property.

Due to his love for tasty waves and

tanning I believe Chad Greenberg

would fit perfect here. When asked

about this fit Chad responded, “Beb

Where Should You Go to College?

so you’re telling me the school is

actually on the beach? I’m so down.”

Washington and Lee. If

you’ve always wanted to be the frat

star portrayed in movies such as

Animal House, then this is the place

for you. With only 2,000 kids going

here, it is easier for one to make their

mark then at a state university. The

frat life is some of the best in the

country. According to US News

College Report it is estimated that

75 percent of students who attend W

& L are involved in greek life. Also

its greek life was graded an A+ by

collegeprowler.com. This social life coupled with rigorous academics

makes this a perfect fit for Spencer

Stieff. Spence has always on top of

the game when it comes to

academics but he also loves his

social life. I heard he is a legacy

also. Legacies are very prominent at

W & L. When asked about this fit

Jack responded, “Eh its a little small

for me but it still would be sick,

somethin straight out of Animal

House.”

So there you have it, my

thoughts and recommendations on

colleges. These may come as a

surprise to some but this is just my

opinion. If there is one thing I learned in college search is that there

is a fit for everyone out there

somewhere.

As hurricane sandy forced

citizens inside as it ravaged the east

coast, a select few of east coast

surfers took to the water, chasing the

swell of their dreams. These select

few, known as the Wild Lyfe Crew, Colin Herlihy, Raven Lundy, and

Todd Elder were the only three in

the deadly rough waters of Ocean

City, Maryland during the storm.

These men are nothing but local

legends who love chasing the

heaviest waves on the east coast. On

the other hand down in Palm Beach,

FL where the waters weren’t as

rough but the swell was still

incredible professionals such as

Cory Lopez, Evan Geiselman, and the Michael Jordan of surfing Kelly

Slater surfed Pumphouse, a spot in

the Palm Beach Inlet known for

going off during storms. Pumphouse

is often dubbed the Teahupo’o, the heaviest wave in the world, of the

east coast. It has never truly lived up

to that name until October 29th,

2012 aka Mega Monday.

It was late in hurricane season

when Sandy made its way on an

abnormal path. It came up the east

coast and inland unlike normal hurricanes which usually just glance

the coast and move back out to sea.

According to weather.com Sandy

was only a

category 1

hurricane, but its sheer size

is what made

it so deadly.

At one point,

clouds from

S a n d y

stretched from

Detroit to

B e r m u d a .

S a n d y ’ s

atmospheric pressure of

27.76 almost

broke the

record low,

27.73 set by

hurricane Glady in 1977 for

hurricanes reaching above Cape

Hatteras. We have all seen on the

news what the heavy rain, high

winds, and powerful storm surge has

done to the east coast. But as people fled away from the swell that

destroyed the east coast, surfers

went straight towards it, risking it

all.

Raven Lundy was quoted on

surfline.com saying “We woke up

yesterday morning in Ocean City,

MD, with butterflies,” when asked

about the swell of the century. He

went on to say, “There were

telephone poles, fences, OC pier pilings... you name it, and it was in

the lineup. We almost drowned a

few times.” The fact that Lundy, one

of the most talented if not the most

talented big wave surfer on the east

coast was nervous about

his swell alludes

to how big it

actually was. “It

reminded me of

six-to eight foot

(hawaiian scale)

Off the Wall,”

Colin herlihy

said when asked

about the size of

the waves.

Hawaiian scale

means that it is

actually double

that amount.

That means their were 12 to 16 foot waves in

Ocean City, MD. That does not

happen often. But the sheer power

of these waves is what made them

so intense.

A couple of watermen from

Boys’ Latin commented on the swell. “It’s honestly insane. I’ve

never seen waves like that. I’ve

never dreamed of waves like that in

Ocean City. Props to my boys, The

Wild Lyfe Crew for absolutely

killing it,” said Chad Greenberg. “I heard north OC was firing off. I saw

the pictures, I’m not gonna lie, if I

was there I would’ve sponged those

tasty waves to shreds,” said James

Weisman. “If the bay bridge wasn’t

closed, i would have definitely been

shredding my dude,” said Chris

Vaughan.

In retrospect, this swell lasted

only a couple f days, but the legend

behind it will last forever. Swells such as these leave East Coast

surfers with hope. A stigma around

the East Coast has stricken east coast

surfers for years, “crappy waves,

and crappy surfers.” Swells like

these put this stigma to shame. This

swell continues to prove not only the

high level of waves found on the

east coast but also the high level of

surfers that exist on the Atlantic.

ZACH’SFACTSVol. 100, No. 2, Page 13 The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland December 2012

After a hard loss in the finals to

the number one seed Gilman, the

varsity squash team begins their

season with a hope for vengeance.

For those who do not know squash is a competitive sport played within

a four walled court. Most courts

contain three solid plaster walls and

a glass back wall for viewing. The

ball that is used is a special rubber

ball that when hit against the wall,

heats up which makes the ball

bounce higher and faster. When

heated the ball becomes deadly. If

one is hit by the ball, one can be sure

that a red welt will be left.

Besides the departure of senior

captain Spencer Ward the team is

the same as last year. The varsity

squash team is comprised of mostly

juniors, also Sophomore phenom,

Connor Ward brother of Spencer

Ward and Freshman Grant Adams.

Another new addition to the Boys’

Latin squash team is the new coach

Sergio Lopez. Sergio was the past

coach of the Guatemalan national

squash team. In his peak he was

rated number 188 in the world.

Currently Sergio is number 274 in

the world.

After the second day of practice,

head coach Sergio Lopez believes,

“The team will be a strong skillful group of boys, and will be strong

from top to bottom. “Everyone from

players to fans are excited for the

upcoming squash season.

The new additions to the team

have made the BL squash team even

better. After a long year recovering

from an ACL tear Sean Horning is

coming back on to the squash courts.

Sean said, “I believe that my

ACL injury has recovered and i will

do my best to add my skills into the

varsity squash program.

Andrew Grauel, the BL squash

#1 fan says the he is, ‘Excited

and pumped for the season.”

All of the squash team

works hard and are dedicated

to bringing a championship to

BL. Cameron Adams, last

years number three on varsity,

believes that the support from

other students have been

lacking.

Cameron said, “Every

year the squash team goes out

and and we do our best . “To

end the season in January the squash

team will take a long bus ride to the

national high school tournament at

the prestigious Yale University.

Every year the BL Varsity squash

team puts up a fight against the top

teams across the country and this

year the Boys Latin squash team

hopes to win the tournament.

Squash is Back

Top Two Shooters

work on our penmanship, boys:

some of you are atrocious in this

particular area. The next class we

shadowed was Ethics, taught by a

bright and charming male teacher.

The class discussion was perfect for

us: the differences in behaviour

between boys and girls. Many

videos were shared and a lot of

thought-provoking questions were

posed, much similar to a typical BL

class. The similarities were far

outweighing the differences now,

much to our surprise.

After a quick snack at advisory,

we headed off to our next and final

class, Anatomy. The class was

primarily focused on Powerpoints

and notetaking. There wasn’t as

much hands-on activities as we were

used to. But hey, we’re boys who

can’t sit still for more than three

minutes and have shorter attention

spans than a housefly.

The rest of our day concluded

with a quick tour of the amazing

facilities Garrison has to offer. We

were truly amazed at how similair

this all-girls school was to our home

on Lake Avenue. It was remarkable.

Who would have known? No one.

But thanks to our courageous souls,

we performed the unthinkable and

did the unspeakable. We found the

answers. Aside from a few gossip

sessions and make-up runs to the

nearest bathroom, we are much

more alike than anyone would have

thought.

Q & A’s (Note: Answers were kept

anonymous by all students by

request)

What is the class schedule like and

does it change every day?

“It’s a 7 day cycle with two lunch

periods and an average of 5 classes

a day. There are seven total blocks,

but seniors only have to take five

classes.”

What are the benefits of not

having boys around?

“We can be less censored and say

what we want to without discretion

in class.”

“There’s a lot less pressure and

distractions. As much as I’d like to

have boys around, I think not having them is better for our learning

experience.”

“I actually would love to have boys

around. We have to get used to

working with the opposite sex,

especially in the future.”

What does GFS offer that no

other school does?

“We have an equestrian center and

a riding team.”

“We have boarders from different

countries.”

“The WISE program is an affiliation

with Johns Hopkins that students

who are involved with engineering

projects can participate in.”

What types of issues get the whole

school talking?

“Snowball is right around the corner

so there’s been a lot of discussion

about stuff like that.”

“Poor teaching usually flares a lot

of tempers, that definitely gets the

whole school chattering.”

How are the lunches?

“There is a regular cafeteria that

makes typical food, but we also have

The Ozone which has cafes like

Panera in it.”

“We have a lot of variety so the food

is usually really good.”

What all boys school do you

prefer to “chill” with?

“Calvert Hall and BL usually”

“BL”

“Gilman and Loyola”

“No school in particular, just the

Yazz Dynasty.”

“BL definitely.”

“McDonough.”

“BL of course.”

Why do you love Garrison Forest

and how is it different from other

girls schools in the area?

“Our class is very tight and close-

knit. Our teachers actually care

about us outside of the classroom.”

“The campus is beautiful and we

have a lot of opportunities to excel.”

“All of the teachers are awesome,

and the classes are interesting and

engaging.”

What’s the hot gossip?

“The first thing that comes to mind

is the Tom Brown-Megan Rossi relationship. They are so cute

together, I can’t wait to see them at

our dance. Rumor is, since the

theme is ‘Lost at Sea’, Tom is

dressing up as Poseidon and Megan

is dressing as a mermaid. So cute.”

“Gossip usually revolves around

dance dates, costumes, and such.”

“Where is Ming Ming going to

college?”

“Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 are the

top two video games this fall”, said

fellow junior, Drew Miller.

This year the top two first

person shooter games are Call of

Duty Black Ops 2 and Halo 4. The Call of Duty franchise releases

games every year. After a great year

of Modern Warfare Three,

developed by Activision, the

competitive rival company Treyarch

released their highly anticipated

sequel Black Ops 2 on all of the

major consoles. Black Ops 2 was

released in the United States on

November 18 at midnight. Within

24 hours Black Ops 2 revinated

$500 million in sales. The game

includes an in depth Campaign and

high action multiplayer and special

trade mark Zombie mode.

On November 6, 2012 Halo 4

was released. Within 24 hrs the game earned $220 million in sales.

According to Gamespot.com, The

previous Halo, Halo 3 was released

on September 25, 2007 by Bungie.

Halo 3 earned $18 Billion in sales in

five years. Halo 4 was produced by 343 Industries. Unlike Call of Duty

the Halo franchise is only released

on the Xbox 360. Unlike Call of

Duty, Halo is a science fiction based

game. The complex campaign takes

place in the year 2557 four years

after the events that occurred in

Halo 3.

The debate on which game is

better will never be solved. There

are many differences between the

Halo 4 online multiplayer and the

Black Ops 2 multiplayer.

Halo advocate Junior, Daniel

Baker believes, “Halo is better

because it involves more skill and

less luck.”

In Halo the default character is

equipped with an armor suit so it

takes more effort and precise

shooting to kill an enemy. In Black

Ops 2 the soldiers are non-suited soldiers made to resemble the

modern military. Since people die

quicker the precision of the player

is not as important. Many criticisms

that are placed on the Halo series is

the non realistic movements.

According to junior Corey

Gaines, “When you're not jumping

like a kangaroo on the moon, video

games are much more fun”. The

unrealistic jumping in Halo the 15ft

vertical jump can confuse a Call of

Duty player.

Teddy Padussis believes that

“Call of Duty and Halo are both

great games. Black Ops 2 can be

better than Halo 4 because of its Zombies mode and how complex

they have developed the storyline.

343 Industries, the developers of

Halo 4 have done a good job

making Halo a game of skill instead

of a point and shoot game of luck.”

Will You Buy the Wii U?

By: Michael Knott, ‘15

On Sunday November 18th,

Nintendo released their Wii U onto

the global market, as the first of the

next generation consoles that are

soon to come. While the Wii U has

a great number of new features

implemented, one of the most

drastic changes made is the ability

of third party developers to create

games for the new console.

Previously, only Nintendo

approved games could be released

on their consoles, creating a very

closed and moderated market.

However, with of the release of the

Wii U comes popular titles such as

Assassin's Creed III and Call of

Duty Black Ops 2.

While Nintendo is opening up

their market, rumor has it that Sony

and Microsoft are closing up the

holes in theirs. They have not said

whether backwards compatibility

will be implemented, but both are

leaning heavily on their online

stores. Sony and Microsoft, in their

next consoles, will try to limit game

resale at locations such as Gamestop

by selling digital copies of games

instead of disks.

The Wii U features a handheld

touchscreen tablet controller out of

the box, which has never before been

seen in other consoles. When asked

about it Julian Baker, ‘15, said, “It

is a neat idea that brings much

nostalgia of the era of the Game

Boy.” The controller has the same

buttons as their normal “wiimotes,”

but features a touchscreen in the

center of it, allowing users to play

games away from their televisions,

up to a certain distance.

The Wii U does not feature any

groundbreaking hardware specs, and

its specifications are fairly

comparable to the current consoles

on the market. It even falls behind

Sony’s PS3 in certain areas, but it

stacks up well against Microsoft’s

Xbox 360 featuring two processors

and better graphics.

The Wii U has currently been

released in two editions; the deluxe which comes with NintendoLand, a

32 gigabyte hard drive, and many

valuable extras to make its use more

convenient. The standard edition

comes with the tablet controller, the

console, and an 8

gigabyte hard drive.

The Wii U is

currently being hailed

as the “console for indie

developers” because it

has been made very

easy to develop for and

a homebrew has already

been made for it,

allowing users to install

any software they want

from devices such as

external hard drives or

USB disks. The Wii U

has had a bit of a rough

start, requiring a

firmware update shortly after the

release due to some bugs with the

software, but it is sure to gain

stability in the coming weeks.

While it may have had an unstable

release, it has definitely remained

more stable than the release of the

Xbox 360 with its fatal red ring of

death issue, which remained an

issue for Microsoft long after the

release. There have also been

product shortages in stores across

the United States and the rest of the

world. Many companies did not

aptly anticipate the rush of people

that would want to purchase the Wii

U on its release date. While the Wii

U may have had an unstable start, it

comes with many features that have

Windows 8: Is It Worth the Hype?By: Michael Knott, ’15

On Oct 26th, 2012, Microsoft

unveiled their redesigned operating

system, Windows 8, which

features cross platform

compatibility. However, many

Windows users are less than

excited for the update. Although it

makes many changes, it is aimed more for tablet users and falls short

for many conventional users.

Windows 8 Professional is

available for download on

Microsoft’s website for $39.99, but

the more preferable disked edition is available to be shipped for

$69.99. The disked edition allows

you to install on more than one

computer.

Microsoft has added many new

features to the Windows operating system(OS). Windows 8 features

a new start menu that features

tablet oriented controls. The new

start menu allows you to place all

of your favorite programs in one place making them easily

accessible. The new menu allows

the user to sync their programs

with their other Windows

devices. Microsoft has made

programs much more accessible

through the addition of their app

store. The app store will contain

many popular apps from other

devices, but Windows also hopes

to streamline internet program

distribution through their new

marketplace. Microsoft currently has three different versions of

Windows 8 on the market. The

Windows 8 RT will be running on

mobile devices and lower grade

tablets. Microsoft has yet to announce what the RT stands for,

but they have released many of

the features. The RT features

secure data protection and comes

with a preview of Microsoft

Office 2013. The Windows 8 RT

will not be able to run programs

from Windows 7 though, so all

programs will have to be acquired

through the app store. “The app

store has the potential to be good,

but if they follow apple’s route

never been seen before in console

gaming.

While most of the news about

Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles

is merely speculation, many leaks

have been made by both companies

that can be used to create an idea

about their new consoles and how

they size up against the competition.

Xbox

Microsoft’s new console has

yet to be named, but the project

name that they use when referring

to it is project “Durango.” The new

Xbox will have a Blu-Ray drive

instead of the HD disk drive seen in

the Xbox 360. Microsoft is also

planning on making the Kinect

system a bigger part of their console

with a project called “Fortaleza”

which features an “augmented

reality projector” which Microsoft

has filed a patent for. When asked

what he thought about this Julian

Baker, ‘15, said “Kinect is a lame

attempt by Microsoft to best the Wii

and it is fairly short sighted by

microsoft to think that everyone will

want to use it,” and that “they need

to decide their demographic.” Many

users of the current Xbox 360 feel

that project “Natal” (kinect) did not

live up to the hype, and feel that it

is focused more for younger users.

Xbox has said that they are

changing their controller to a new design. While many will not like the

Continued on Page 15

and control the market it will not be

a good product,” said Parker

Hawkins, ‘14. The standard version

of Windows 8 will come on most

store bought laptops and some tablets and will be the most basic of

the releases. Windows 8

Professional allows computers to

use more than 4gb of RAM and

features the ability to connect to

computers securely from afar. One

of the more controversial features is

the removal of the start menu on the

taskbar. Many Microsoft users find

Windows hard to navigate because

they no longer have the ability to

place their favorite programs in an

easily accessible place on their

taskbar. “Everything is in a weird spot,” said Mr. Paquette, the Boys’

Latin server admin, when asked

about how he liked Windows 8.

Microsoft has made Windows 8

faster than their previous operating

systems by improving their file

explorer software’s ability to

navigate the data stored on hard

drives. While “File Explorer” is

faster, manual searching becomes

more difficult and incredibly tedious

due users having all of their

programs listed in one page.

Windows 8 is also less intense on

hardware, making it more smooth

the even users on computers with

the base requirements. While Windows 8 adds many features, Mr.

Paquet calls it “an overlay of

Windows 7 for touch devices.” Gabe

Newell (co-founder of Valve

Corporation, the developer of

By: Michael Knott, ‘15

Incumbent President Obama won

against Gov. Mitt Romney by

electoral vote by a landslide and

earned more than a million more

votes than did Gov. Romney. The

Boys’ Latin poll turned in quite the

opposite manner, with Gov.

Romney winning seventy percent of

the Upper school’s one hundred

sixty votes.

All incumbent Congressmen in

the state won their seats but Roscoe

G. Bartlett of State Congressional

district 6. Ultimately the house and

senate balance did not change much,

with the senate being controlled by

Democrats while the Republican

party controls the House of

Representatives. While many have

said that they will try to “work

across the aisle” the likelihood of

any major changes being made is

very slim. For at least the next two

years, congress will likely remain in

the gridlock that they were stuck in

leading up to this election.

Many states have been made very

unhappy by the results of the

election and have created petitions

to secede from the Union. While

most of these states are Republican

states in the south, even some

Democrat controlled states have

issued petitions. In order for the

petitions to make any headway, the

petitioners must obtain at least

twenty five thousand signatures on

their petitions. Ultimately, if the

states do manage to secede, their

decision will prove to be very short

sighted, because most of the states

seceding are currently losing money

for the Union rather than making it.

Julian Baker, 15’, thinks that “the

state with the most behind the

petition, Texas, is an integral part of

the US's economy, although if the

The 2012 General Election Results

bill gets enough gusto it could

become a cancer to American

society,” but that “the petition

being signed by states like

Louisiana to secede are a non-

entity to the rest of America.” Once

out, they would likely not be

brought back into the Union unless

they were to become profitable to

the United States once again. While

it would be interesting to see how

the states would do on their own,

ultimately it is in our best interest

toA retain the states currently in the

Union so we remain a strong and

powerful nation.

All of Maryland’s seven

constitutional amendments posted

on the ballot during this general

election passed.

Many of the questions proved

controversial in the weeks before

the election, but it seems as though

the people of Maryland supported

them regardless.

Question 3 changed the time at

which a state official can be

removed automatically from office

when they are actually sentenced

to the point at which they are

convicted of a crime. Now state

officials can be removed from

office, even if they aren’t actually

guilty of a crime, just because they

have been accused. “There is no

reason to wait until sentencing in

the vast majority of cases.” Mr.

Franklin.

Question 4, otherwise known as

the “dream act,” allows

undocumented, “illegal,”

immigrants to pay in-state tuition

at community colleges as long as

they can prove that they paid taxes

in the United States and going to

high-school for three years. ”I feel

that as long as they have paid taxes

from Page 14

change, Parker Hawkins, ‘14, has

said, “as long as it remains easy to get used to change is good.” As long as the controller is comfortable, most gamers should be able to get used to it rather quickly. If people speak up enough, Microsoft is sure to release compatible 360 controllers for their new Xbox as well.

The Xbox has had issues with unstable releases in the past, and when asked what he would like to see most in the new Xbox, Parker Hawkins, ‘14, said “Stability in the release would be good,” and that he would like to see “consistent performance in the next Xbox.” There is speculation that the Xbox will be able to run Directx 11, so performance shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but product quality remains to be seen. While Sony has not yet announced their next generation

Steam, an application distribution

interface) described Windows 8 as

being a "catastrophe for everyone in

the PC space." Windows 8 makes

many changes to features that many

users have grown to love about

Windows and have made many

Windows users angry.

“Windows 8 has a lot to beat

since android and iOS are already

proven.” Parker Hawkins, ‘14.

Microsoft has shifted their sights

towards the tablet market,

integrating many features available

on their previous mobile Windows

release into Windows 8.

Many mobile Windows devices

will feature hardware that had only

previously been seen in the PC

market. While having better

hardware will increase the price, the

tablets will feature performance that

blows all of the others on the market

out of the water.

Many of the new tablets will

have access to the full release of

Windows, allowing them to use

programs available to PC users and

even programs from Windows 7.

Windows 8 features much more

customization compared to the rigid

Android and iOS operating systems.

The RT that is available on lower

spec hardware is based around the

Windows 8 start screen, with the

elements of the traditional OS

stripped away.

When Mr. Paquet was asked

about how he thought Windows 8

looked against its competing mobile

console officially, many leaks

have been made of “Playstation

Orbis,” as their entry into the battle

to win over the consumers.

The name “Orbis” hints at the use

of the Playstation Vita in sync with

it as it comes from the latin phrase

“Orbis Vitae” meaning circle of

life. They may be using this as a

competing point against the Wii

U’s handheld screen feature.

The Playstation will feature

full HD 1080p 3D and a Blu-Ray

drive, like its predecessor. There

are many rumors

that Sony has let

Google refine its

operating system, as

they did with the

Xperia Play. When

asked about this

partnership, Julian

Baker, ‘15, said “I

think that google

would do a good job

working with Sony.”

Both the Xbox

and the Playstation

will have last

generation graphics

cards, as it would be

operating systems he said that Windows 8 is “Not as smooth as android or apple software.” Both Android and iOS are much more intuitive and the Windows 8 RT does not feature much customizability.

While Windows 8 has made many strides towards a touch oriented market, it still hopes to compete with Apple’s OS X. Apple’s latest release “Mountain Lion” makes many changes to make it easier to use on touch devices, but Apple has yet to integrate it into mobile devices and instead defaults back to their proven iOS.

Windows 8 “falls short for computers that aren’t touch sensitive,” said Mr. Paquet. It is awkward to navigate and many of the new features lack explanation. Windows 8 even falls behind its predecessor, Windows 7 on computers without touch integration.

“It is one of those updates that most server admins are going to skip.”Mr. Paquette. When asked about the new operating system, Julian Baker of the sophomore class, said “I think that in terms of tablets and touchscreens, it is something we've never seen before. However, with the 90% of us with regular non-touchscreen computers, it struggles to match up to the simplicity iOS system and the familiarity of Windows 7,” when asked how he thought it compared to other devices he had used.

and can prove that they went to

school it is fair for them to get

tuition,” said an anonymous student

from the junior class.

Question 5 declares that

redistricting in the state of Maryland

is unconstitutional and makes set

lines for the districts. “Redistricting

is outrageous, and I think that the

wording was unclear,” Mr.

Franklin. “We have one of the

strangest looking electoral maps

that any state has ever come out

with,” Mr. Franklin.

Question 7 was quite

controversial, as it was posted in

response to the addition of yet

another casino. It specifically raises

the amount of casino licenses and

games that the state can issue to

casinos, but the controversy was

over the fact that current casinos are

already in far too great a

concentration to each other. Max

Marshall, 15’, thinks that, “it is nice

that the money is going to the state

rather than West Virginia.”

Question 7 had the most money

spent on it of any issue or campaign

in the state of Maryland ever, but

ultimately the casino operator and

his supporters won out.

While the 2012 general election

may have seemed quite

controversial in the weeks prior to

it, ultimately things did not change

all that much, with most of the

incumbents retaining their seats for

yet another term.

too expensive for consumers to buy products with the current graphics. They will also have between 8 to 16 gigabytes of RAM. While neither release date is set in stone, it is widely believed that the consoles will be coming out around the winter holidays of 2013. Sony has much incentive to release before Microsoft, as they lost a very pivotal lead in the console market during their last release.

Chuck’s CornerVol. 100, No. 2, Page 16 The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland December 2012

The Greatest Athlete at Boys’ Latin Throughout Boys’ Latin

history, the school has seen many

outstanding athletes that have gone

on to accomplish many magnificent

feats. Brian Kowitz, class of ‘87,

was a center fielder from BL who

went on to play at Clemson and was

part of the Atlanta Braves World

Series winning team in 1995. Brian

Farrell was an all MIAA receiver on

the football field and arguably the

greatest lacrosse player to come out

of Boys’ Latin.

However, in this year's graduating

class, there is an athlete unlike no

other to ever come out of this

school. He’s 5’10”, 170 lbs, and the

purest raw talent the world has ever

seen. He’s an avid bird watcher, and

enjoys moonlit walks by the bay.

Some refer to him as “Ace.” To the

rest, he is known as none other than

Sam Boykin.

Sam isn’t like most other athletes

looking to play a sport in college. He

is uncommitted at the moment and

is still deciding which sport to play.

“Right now I’m thinking about

playing football at ‘Bama, that’s my

number one choice. I’ve talked to

‘Uncle Nick’ [Saban] and he says

he’s got a spot for me on either side

of the ball. Especially special teams.

Cyrus should probably just leave.”

When asked if football was the

only sport he is looking to play in

college, Sam remarked, “Man

please. I’m also in discussion with

playing hockey at Boston College or

lacrosse at either Maryland or

Virginia.”

Sam currently has 135 different

Division 1 offers for 10 different

sports. He is in discussion with

NCAA officials about whether or

not he can play 2-3 sports per

season, making him eligible for up

to 9 varsity letters per year in

college. He could finish his college

career making a grand total of 36

teams when all is said and done; that

is, if he doesn’t go pro first.

“Right now my goal is to be the

greatest collegiate and professional

athlete to ever walk this planet.

Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson

were alright...I guess playing 2

professional sports is cute.”

In high school, Sam has decided

some things are more important

than sports. He was the best runner

on the X-Country team when after

sophomore year he decided to quit

and go ride pine for the volleyball

team. “Coach said putting me in

would be unfair” Sam said. “When

I’m out on the volleyball court, its

like a bunch of Japanese trying to

stop Godzilla. I’m unstoppable.”

When asked about Sam’s

volleyball skills, Senior David

Santangelo said, “He’s the best

player I’ve ever seen. Playing him

would be unfair to the other team. I

mean, they have to at least have a

small chance of winning.”

“He’s perfected the art of that

underhand jump serve” fellow

volleyball star Ben Levin remarked.

Sam also plays for the tennis team,

winning one match in all 4 years on

the team. “The MIAA told me that

I couldn’t use a racquet. They said

I had to hit the ball with my open

palms and play with my shoelaces

tied together so that I couldn’t cover

the whole court. Originally, I

thought this ruling was unfair. Then

I realized my superior athleticism

would make up for these handicaps.”

Last year Sam’s performance on

the tennis court didn’t go as well as

he expected. “Yeah man, I could’ve

had an undefeated season. But my

mind was stuck on other things. I

was scheming on how to steal RJ’s

date from him at prom.”

“You know I don’t blame the

guy” victim of robbery RJ Kaminski

said. “A superior athlete of his

caliber can get any girl he wants. 5

years from now when he’s one of

the greatest athletes in the world I

can say ‘that guy stole my prom

date’.”

Only time will tell where he ends up.

What sport(s) will he pursue? What

records will he break? When asked

this question, Sam answered, “All

of them. I’m going to be the greatest

Olympian too. I’m going to break

Phelps’ record of 8 gold medals in

a single Olympics. I don’t know

how, but I will.”

Everyone should consider

themselves privileged to walk the

same halls as this god amongst men.

Savor every word he speaks to you,

you’re one of the lucky few.

Ask him for a handshake in hopes

that a small amount of his talent will

rub off on you. He’s got plenty to

spare.
