The Ingenuity in Pioneering

As I look back at the year’s beginning and the uncertainties that we were facing, I can’t help but feel great pride with the magnificent efforts and undeniable achievements that you have all accomplished throughout this year.

Perhaps the best way to describe my thoughts and feelings is to quote the great Vincent Lombardi (American Football coach who led his team to three straight league championships): “Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. What makes us leaders in our field of expertise is our commitment to excellence and our perseverance.

The Secret to Success

One of the most valuable lessons in Organization Management was given to me by a single statement made by Thomas Watson, Sr. (previous Chairman and CEO of IBM) around 50 years ago, “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart”.

Gloomy political conditions will probably slow you down. Rocky economy will hinder your growth. But none of them can make you fail. Failure is entirely your choice. So if you put your heart in everything you do then suc-cess is bound to come. And this is ALUMCO’s secret constituent.

Another year is ending, and, although its beginnings were quite unpredict-able, we have come together as one team and we have beaten the odds. Another year of challenges, and another year of successes.

At the beginning of the year, Mr. Haddad and I had promised you that un-precedented growth is on its way and we will be the leaders of the coming change. Our promise to you has been fulfilled today not by coincidence nor by magic, but by pure determination and commitment from each and every one of you.

To all of you I say “congratulations on a job very well done and always re-member to add ALUMCO’s secret ingredient to every task you undertake”.

“New Image but same Ingenuity in Pioneering”

«Phoenicians were pioneering artisans and ingenious craftsmen…They developed the technique behind the production of transparent glass…Their innovation spread around the globe throughout the past centuries…ALUMCO AIM TO CARRY ON WITH THE INNOVATION»

Since 1982 ALUMCO accomplished its vision in becoming a worldwide leader in the aluminum and glazing industry, while building on its ancestral legacy of the past, and striving to establish global standards for unique & innovative solutions to façade engineering.

ALUMCO’s success is driven by constantly delivering reliable engineering solutions to complex ideas through ground-breaking designs.

And as ALUMCO grows, achieves a different market position, the aim of the company becomes more clear and it opens itself to new and superior challenges… this might be the moment to embark a “rebranding” policy keeping its same Ingenuity in Pioneering.

ALUMCO management took the decision to go on with an initiative of compiling its corporate manual, revamping the website, and upgrading all visual communication material and launched an initiative to upgrade and «face lift» its Logo giving it a new direction, evolving ALUMCO to a more current, modern state…

The “Rebranding” process began with the birth of ALUMCO modern logo selected after an electronic voting among ALUMCO members who contributed in shaping ALUMCO’s new logo with an active participation involving the four branches.

In line with this “rebranding” plan, an advanced website was launched featuring a fresh look, easy navigation and more focus on ALUMCO entities and major projects.

Beneath this new exterior, our core remains the same. We are still the same people who go the distance, who pay attention to details, and who are devoted to Engineering Solutions for Creative Minds with same Ingenuity of Pioneering.

We hope these steps will be the start of a new era of continued progress and success to all of us, ALUMCO members, partners and clients.

Why ALUMCO Embarked The Rebranding Walk?

As more rating systems are developed, ALUMCO’s approach to achieve successful progress remains sound and up to date as more complex engineering design challenges are presented. Adverse wind conditions, increasing natural daylight, maximizing direct views, design and use of materials for glare control, and thermal analysis are all present on project execution agendas.

ALUMCO’s focus shall remain on keeping clients satisfied with the level of services rendered providing next generation technologies and a diverse range of engineering solutions that will eventually include more complex analysis such as statistical, seismic, and structural testing and reporting as well as thermal and wind modeling against green building criteria and ISO 14001 standards.

In today’s increasingly crowded marketplace, a properly identifiable logo is required. The logo of a company is its trademark.

The logo affects the belonging spirit of the staff in terms of identification and clarity of objectives.

One of the most important elements of an identity system is the logo. It is carefully designed for easy and definite recognition providing a base upon which an organization’s identity is built.

Alumco must have a unique visual identity which distinguishes it. Its whole corporate identity should be highly perceived by the public and the public should associate it with ALUMCO. In order to achieve that, ALUMCO, like any other institution, should have a visual unity. This is the main purpose behind the “rebranding”, where consistency is the key element to achieve a distinct corporate personality that best communicates ALUMCO’s identity and culture.

CSR

2014

What is CSR? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Is:

• Behaving Ethically. • Ensuring Good Quality. • Monitoring our business. • Contributing to the society. • Treating each others respectively. • Using Natural Resources responsibly.

Due to the recent numerous natural disasters, envi-ronmental issues, and their relative consequences, the need for the active implementation of Social Responsibility is growing exponentially all over the world.

As a pioneer on all levels, Alumco, who is well known for its Green Culture and its commitment to “making the world a better place”, is one of the earliest promoters and a fierce advocate of CSR. In fact, Alumco openly recognized the need for an active implementation of Social Responsibility and dedicated a whole issue of its company Newsletter to this subject whereby announced that it is “Go-ing Green” on October 2011 in the 4th Edition of “Alumco Today”.

Committed to its CSR goals and vision, Alumco en-listed two of its staff members in the “Doing Busi-ness Responsibly: When Corporations Become Citi-zens” the 2nd PRME MENA Regional Forum held at University Saint-Esprit De Kaslik on November 07th & 08th 2012, in order to learn the most recent trends related to Social Responsibility. This forum mainly aims at endorsing the notion of responsible business and the importance of adopting Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) in the MENA region.

It discussed mainly the need for adopting regu-lations and policies for Social Responsibility by the corporations and it prepared the attendees to spread awareness among their staff for conducting business in a responsible manner. Thanks to Alumco, its culture, and the above training and trainees, CSR culture was disseminated across Alumco for a better Alumco and a better world.

Sponsoring a fundraising event for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) .

ALUMCO sponsoring a fundraising brunch in support of MS disease:

At ALUMCO, we believe in giving back to our communities.

ALUMCO contributed as a sponsor of a Fundraising Brunch for Multiple Sclerosis disease that was held on the 8th of December, 2012 at the Four Season Hotel-Beirut.The event gathered businessmen and “high society” members as a support for the AUBMC-MS center and was sponsored in addition to ALUMCO by renowned other companies (SOLIDERE-Dar Al Handasah-MEA-Pepsico…)

More than 250 attendees, including award-winning pan-Arab singer Saber Al Rebai, gave generously contributing more than $100,000 to benefit the AUBMC Multiple Sclerosis Center.

The brunch started with a video Ad about MS disease and AUBMC Multiple Sclerosis Center activities followed by a word for Dr. Samia KHOURY (AUBMC-MS Center president); a word for Dr. Naamani and Ms. Nahed Habib as MS patient testimonials and a word from the well known singer Saber Al Rebai as a support to MS.

By this action ALUMCO was listed among AUB annual contributor report, which was available on its website after the end of the2013 fiscal year and also posted among the comprehensive Donor List in the “Highlights” section of the AUBMC website at www.aub.edu.lb/development.

“As an overview about Multiple sclerosis (MS); it is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. The immune system reacts against components in the nervous system in specific the myelin, causing disabilities that can be reversible or irreversible. It is one of the most common neurological disorders and causes of disability in young adults.

Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 - 40 with approximately twice as many women diagnosed than men. It affects an estimated two million people worldwide, although it is likely that many hundreds of thousands more remain undiagnosed. For some people, MS is characterized by periods of relapse and remission, while for others it has a progressive pattern. Some people may feel and seem healthy for many years following diagnosis, while others may be severely debilitated very quickly. For everyone, MS makes life unpredictable. The symptoms can include blurred vision, weak limbs, tingling sensations, unsteadiness and extreme fatigue. It is not yet known what causes the disease, and as yet there is no cure.”

Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. This is why the AUB MC inaugurated the first Multiple Sclerosis Center (MSC) in Lebanon, Middle East and North Africa. The center’s mission is to improve the treatments of MS, control disease progression and to provide patients and their families with compassionate, comprehensive, innovative and technologically advanced care of the highest quality.

Graduate from Omar Ibn Al Khattab School, Al-Makassed, Zaki enrolled in the Lebanese University- Faculty of Fine Arts where he graduated in 2005 with a Diploma in Architecture.

Zaki first heard of Alumco from his professor, Dr. Wissam Atwi (he was the Project Manager assigned by Al-Habtoor Properties on Al-Habtoor Grand Hotel Project), who recommended him as a trainee to Alumco’s Project Manager assigned on Al-Habtoor Project, Mr. Paul Fakhry, in Summer 2004. Having been interviewed by Mr. Samer and Mr. Osama Zubdeh, who was then Alumco s.a.l.’s Technical Manager, he was selected as a trainee. However, Alumco s.a.l.’s headquarters were being relocated from Hamra to the current premises in Choueifat. As such, Mr. Samer requested Zaki to postpone the training for a couple of months. Unable to postpone his training, Zaki joined Al Habtoor Properties, the Employer of the Habtoor Grand Hotel Project, as a trainee. One of Zaki’s assignments were to monitor Alumco’s progress of works and it was the first time he collaborated with Alumco which encouraged him to join Alumco as a Technical Engineer in January 2006, few months after his graduation. After completing his three-month training with Al-Habtoor Properties, he was employed as an undergraduate Technical Engineer in Kocache (Fit-out Subcontractor) Technical Department on the same project in Fall 2004.

In December 2004, Zaki was contacted by Mr. Osama Zubdeh who informed him that the relocation of Alumco premises was complete and that they are interested in assigning him as a Technical Team Member in Alumco’s Technical Department. Zaki reluctantly declined the offer because he was already committed to his work with Kocache. Zaki eventually did join Alumco in January 2006, shortly after his graduation in the fall of 2005.

His first assignment was to learn Schucal Software and to order the Schuco material for the Old and Gold Souks Project. In early 2007, his distinguished performance on the said project soon earned him a promotion to Technical Team Leader on Platinum Tower Project.

In July 2006 war broke out between Israel and Lebanon. Given the enormous work load, he (like most Alumco s.a.l.’s staff) used to attend to the office, which was temporarily relocated to Hamra, on a daily basis to ensure that the progress of the works is not affected by the war outbreak.

During that time, Zaki was in charge of the shop drawings preparation for both the skylights of the Red Sea Mall Project (KSA) and the Science & Technology Park Project (Qatar).

In October 2009, Zaki joined Alumco Qatar as Project Engineer working on the balance technical items of the Refah and Rayyan Towers Project. One month later, he was relocated to Alumco UAE on a six-month assignment after which he was supposed to return to Alumco Qatar. His assignment was to finalize the material orders and follow-up the progress of works as Project Engineer on the Etihad Towers Project managed by Project Manager Charbel Bou Nicolas. His assignment was then extended to cover monitoring the installation of the External façades in the Etihad Towers Podium Project managed by Project Manager Maher Tahan. Back then, Alumco UAE was struggling with the erection of the visual mock-up due to incessant modifications that were being made by the Employer.

Zaki volunteered to follow-up this issue and was able to secure the Employer and the Engineer’s approval on the mock-up which lead Alumco’s management to assign the stick façade installation to him. The said façade included Steel, Aluminum, and Glass works. Few months later, Zaki was also put in charge of the installation of the Podium South Façade, which was the most critical façade in the whole project due to its complexity, which he was able to successfully complete in a record timing.

In June 2011, Etihad Towers’ Project Manager, Maher Tahhan, was relocated to Alumco s.a.l. to manage the prestigious Beirut City Center Project, which required that Zaki sees the project through up to completion in November 2011. During the same period, Alumco secured the Sowwah Square Project contract and Zaki was assigned as Acting Project Manager on the said project. Despite the Employer’s very demanding requirements and the unusually tight time frame for project completion, he was able to complete the project to the Employer’s best satisfaction in April 2012.

In January 2012, Zaki was assigned as Project Manager for the Meena Plaza Project. In September 2012, he was assigned as Project Manager for the Presidential Palace Project and he continued to simultaneously manager both projects until the suspension by the Employer of the Meena Plaza Project in January 2013. At the time of Zaki’s assignment to the project, the Presidential Palace Project was in a very critical condition with major complaints from both the Employer and the Contractor. However, he managed to put the project right on track, tackling the issues one by one

In addition to his duties as Project Manager on the Presidential Palace Project, Zaki is currently the Operations Manager in Alumco UAE.

Organized, highly efficient, dynamic, and self-driven, Zaki capitalizes on his technical background and his practical experience in successfully resolving all day-to-day issues, whether related to the management of the project, of the company operations, or of the relations with others which earned him a track record and achievements and the respect of his colleagues and managers.

ADR, Mediation, and Negotiation work-shop

“When I first heard about Mediation”, says Nabih Haddad, Chairman of Alumco Group, “I thought it was another ‘flavor of the month’ kind of trend that would fade away as it proves to be of little efficiency in resolving disputes, just like a number of trends before it. Little did I know that I would come to perceive it as the common grounds where differing points of view could actually meet”. Alumco Group, a Lebanese Building Envelope Specialists Company who grew to become multinational, was first introduced to CEDR’s (Center of Effective Dispute Resolution) concept of Mediation through the Lebanese Mediation Center (LMC) and the Tripoli Bar Association (TBA) who approached Mr. Nabih Haddad, the group Chairman, and Mr. Samer Noureddine, the group CEO. At that time, the company had resorted to Mediation on one of its projects in an attempt to resolve a conflict they had with one of their clients. The results were disappointing, which led Alumco’s Upper Management to become skeptical about the efficiency of the subject method. The company’s past experience with Mediation required LMC and TBA to rebuild the company’s trust in the concept of Mediation altogether.

Now re-convinced that Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods (ADR), namely Mediation, are the key to tackling potential conflicts with clients without damaging the strategic partnership the group came to build with its clients, Alumco’s Upper Management organized a full-day workshop aimed at introducing the company’s team members to ADR. The workshop, titled “ADR, Mediation, and Negotiation”, took place on Tuesday 13 August 2013 at Holiday Inn Hotel- Dunes. The training was administered by Me. Fehmi Karami (CEDR Accredited Mediator and Master Trainer, CIArb Arbitrator, TBA), Me. Dala Ghandour (CEDR Accredited Mediator and Master Trainer, CPM Certified Mediator, LMC), Mrs. Nevine El Hachem (CEDR Accredited Mediator and Master Trainer, CPM Certified Mediator, LMC), and Mrs. Lama Sinno (CEDR Accredited Mediator and Master Trainer, LMC/ Alumco’s Senior Contracts Administrator).

Trainings 2014

The purpose of the workshop was to raise the team’s awareness about the available ADR methods and their application, provide a comprehensive presentation of Mediation (definition, application, needed preparations, role of mediator, role of mediation centers, phases of mediation), and explore the concept of Negotiation (principles of negotiation and good practices in negotiations.

The said workshop was attended by all team members from all Alumco Group Branches (Alumco Lebanon, Alumco Metals, Aluseal, Alumco Qatar, Alumco UAE, and Alumco KSA) who are prone to be a party to a dispute related to the company’s activities and projects, namely the group’s Upper Management, Area Managers, Commercial Managers, Sales and Marketing Managers, Operations Managers, Technical Managers, Procurement Managers, Planning Managers, Project Managers, Contracts Managers and Administrators, and Heads of Departments.

Unlike a basic awareness campaign, the subject workshop was built around interactions and participation of the attendees for the purpose of altering their perception of disputes and issues, and getting them to apply the concepts introduced to them during the subject workshop. The attendees’ participation was ensured through administering a number of pre-prepared exercises, including trompe-l’oeil and visual deception type of exercises, aimed at testing and applying the theories, and reframing the attendees’ preconceived notions and analytical thinking, thus empowering them to become better negotiators and better problem solvers.

“At the beginning of the day, I had planned to attend part of the workshop and then leave early to go to the office and get some things done”, says Project Manager Makram Ghoussaini, “however, as the day progressed, I became more and more interested in the topics being discussed that I couldn’t bring myself to leave”. Project Manager Nabil Hamza joins Makram in his assessment of the workshop and adds “it is one of the few workshops or trainings where you end up with a backlog of information that can be applied in our day-to-day work and activities”.

The workshop was concluded by the distribution of Certificates of Attendance to the participants in recognition of the time they took from their occupations to attend the workshop, and by small speeches given by Alumco Group’s Upper Management. “I was planning to attend the opening session only and leave due to my busy schedule”, says Alumco Group’s CEO Samer Noureddine, “however, the content was so interesting and beneficial that I canceled all my meetings to attend the full seminar. I can objectively say that Mediation is indeed the method of choice of resolving and even preventing disputes”. Mr. Haddad adds “We at Alumco take great pride in being pioneers in our field of expertise. And now, after attending this workshop, I assure you that we will be also pioneers in implementing ADR, and specifically Mediation”. Mr. Haddad and Mr. Noureddine concluded their words by extending an invitation to LMC and TBA to administer future similar workshops and to count on Alumco’s support in promoting Mediation.

Alumco Qatar Participates in Barwa’s Passivhaus Project:

In July 2012, Barwa Real Estate (BRE) has taken the initiative to provide a Case Study Passivhaus. The Passivhaus («passive house» in English) villa is an ultra-low energy building, derived from a super insulated airtight building envelope, that requires little energy for cooling, reducing its environmental footprint.

The aim of this project was to demonstrate that it is possible to reduce energy consumption by %50 from the control›s norm and that this can be delivered in an extremely cost effective manner such that the Case Study Passivhaus would become an exemplar and model for all future residential development in Qatar.

To accomplish the Case Study Passivhaus preparation BRE collaborated with Qatar Green Building Council to conduct the same. The site for the Case Study Passivhaus was within Barwa City and the scope was limited to a two simple three-bedroom villa/apartment, single storey, constructed using a precast system.

Being a promoter and implementer of green technology, Alumco Qatar was not surprised to receive an invitation from BRE to participate in this innovative project. Although the project programme was tight, BRE believed that Alumco Qatar has the know-how and resources to complete the Project on time and with the highest of quality standards.

Alumco Qatar accepted the invitation and proceeded immediately with the related Works to meet the Project tight deadline and high specifications. The Project was a true success to say the least. The building was officially opened in April 2013, alongside a conventional villa, under the joint project ‹Baytna.›

This distinguished achievement earned Alumco Qatar an award of recognition from BRE and shed the light once again on Alumco as a pioneer not only in its field but also in green technology.

Congratulations for Alumco Qatar team on this distinguished achievement, which has proven Alumco’s “Ingenuity in Pioneering”.

Life in ALUMCO 2014

Mini Football Tournament

ALUMCO always believed in teamwork among its members inside and outside the workplace.

From its early beginnings the company’s members where bonded together by a “familial” team spirit.

Back to 2004, the management and employees regularly participated in friendly football games as shown in the old picture:

(Bilal Tabesh, Accounting Manager - ALUMCO Metals; Makram Ghossaini, PM - ALUMCO sal; Mahmoud Baalbaki, Group Financial Manager; Bilal Shbaklo (MUH) PM - ALUMCO KSA; Ousama Zubdeh ,GM ALUMCO Qatar & UAE; Ihab Hammad, GM-ALUMCO Metals; Paul Fakhry Assistant GM - ALUMCO sal).

Nowadays ALUMCO maintained its team spirit and the same employee’s enthusiasm towards friendly football games by organizing a Mini Football tournament for ALUMCO sal staff.

The tournament took place at the ALL SPORTS COURT-Choueifat from the 10th till the 28th of December 2012 involving ALUMCO employees from the Office, Factory, Store and Sites.

The tournament was very well organized by Jihad Boutary, personnel officer, assisted by Hisham Merheb who took care of all the necessary logistics with detailed program; scores and statistics as well as Ziad Khalil who played the role of the “Referee” for all the games and of course the support of all the companies departments.

The tournament incorporated 48 players divided in 8 teams each team comprised of 6 players.
